USB to SATA Converter

Hi,
I would like to upgrade the HDD of a MacBook Pro to a Solid Sate Hybrid Drive (MacBook Pro 5.1 late 2008). Before removing the original internal HDD I would like to install the Mac OS on the new drive, make sure it works ok.
I have looked online and seen different USB to SATA converter cables. Some come with 1 USB port, some with 2 USB ports, and some even with an external power supply. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Pablo

Any cable configuration that recognizes the external HDD will work.
I recommend that you use Disk Utility>Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the data from your current internal HDD.
Do not for get that the new drive will have to be formatted first in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before the cloning.
Ciao.

  • 1 more time: I installed Samsung 840EVO SSD and tried to clone the OEM drive to it. Disk Utility shows all files landed in the new SSD thru the USB to SATA converter cable yet my Mac won't boot. Why's that?

The question is why won't my Mac boot with the new  840EVO SSD that I thought I'd successfully cloned all contents from the OEM hard drive by using a USB to SATA converter cable. Disk Utility seemed to indicate the SSD had captured everything from the OEM drive. Note the OEM had 2 partitions to run Parallels Windows XP

XP is not supported externally or if you install Mavericks, and Microsoft is trying their hardest t o get people off that old tin can, rightly so.
Usually Carbon Copy Cloner will. Usally. DU is not really meant to and you had 4 partitions before.
This forum is not for MacBook Pro btw.
Cloning with DU or CCC may do a perfect job but not be bootable if t he interface or case is not.
The EVO is capable of 500MB/sec so even your mid-2010 MBP is not going to get the top performance but should be better once you swap it out than what you were using.

  • USB to 422 Converter Woes

I have a USB to RS422 converter that was packaged with an IMS MDrive 23 stepper motor controller. I probably should have bought the NI Converter as I
can’t get LabView to write to the port. The device is nicely packaged with a
driver that makes it appear in Device Manager like a standard serial port.
M&A Explorer seems to like it and will open a VISA session.
I can’t get past the LabView standard VISA Write command. It issues a
“Could Not Perform operation because of an I/O error" or a “The specified
attribute is not defined or supported by the referenced resource" error.
When I reboot the motor controller, it issues a “reboot successful“message
that can be read from the port from LabView, so I am communicating with the
port and controller in one direction.
    Without changing anything, HyperTerminal communicates
    successfully.
Any ideas will be cheerfully and thankfully appreciated.

I have used the IMS converter with Labview, but only to test basic comms.  If I recall, it echoed back the command, but I believe that can be disabled in the MDrive.

  • USB to Parallel Converter

Has anyone had success using any USB to parallel port converter?  I've tried 3 different cables including one that supposedly supported the full IEEE-1284 standard, but all of them show up only as a virtual printer port.  Is there a way to get access to this port through LabView?  Are there any cables/converters out that actually show up as a regular parallel port?  I've searched far and wide for one, but had no luck.  I searched the boards to see if anyone had done this, but most of the posts were over a year old and had no resolution confirming whether or not a proposed solution worked or not.  Thanks in advance for any help,

What OS are you using? I had the same problem with XP and LabVIEW 7.0 & &.1. But using the same USB-parallel  port converter under WIN2k I was able to access this as a parallel port. In the end my solution was to go to a PCI parallel port which worked fine under both OSes.

  • Usb to 232 converter and windows 7

    Hi All,
Taking a long shot hoping someone has an idea on what the possible solution could be. Hoping I've just missed something obvious. I have a customer who is using the NI usb to 232 converter. The software he is using is emh camcal software. He says the comms worked fine on his XP machine, then he moved it across to a machine with Windows 7. He installed the latest driver, NI serial 3.5.1 I think it is, which supports Windows 7. Now the communication doesn't work. I've got him to run the troubleshooting wizard for ni serial and everything seems fine.
The client says he's tried a cheap usb to serial converter in place of the NI product and everything has worked. Maybe its got something to do with the configuring of the com ports when the device is plugged in?
    Thanks,
    Jevon

    Hello Jevon,
Here is a few other things I would try. First does the Windows 7 machine see the COM port in the device manager? If it does, I would make sure to see if MAX sees the device on the customers machine. From MAX you can test the connection with it by using the NI-Serial communicator. I have copied the steps to do this from the manual below.
    Launch MAX.
Expand the My System directory by clicking the
    + next to the folder.
Expand the Devices and Interfaces directory by clicking the
    + next to the folder.
Select your serial interface and expand it to see its ports by clicking the
    + next to its name.
Right-click on the serial port you want to use and select
Communicate with Instrument. This launches the NI-Serial
    Communicator.
Depending on the result of this test, the problem could be with the serial converter or the program communicating with this device. There is a Knowledgebase that contains a lot of different ways to debug these problems and the URL is below.

  • Usb to serial converter console access on aironet 1131

I am having difficulty accessing the console port utilizing a usb to serial converter. My settings are 9600, 8,n,1 and flow control is none.
The converter works if I use it for switches and router but fails on the aironet.
I can access the aironet if I go directly to the serial port.

    Hi,
I haven't seen this problem except when I chose the incorrect COM port in my terminal emulator. Otherwise, usb-to-serial cables haven't presented any issues with Aironet equipment.
Sorry I couldn't help further. Maybe someone else has seen this issue.

  • Why won't my USB to Coax converter work? No output

I'm trying to use a USB to Coax converter with my iMac. It's detected just fine but when I try to play any audio in iTunes it flat out won't tick past 0:00. It's like iTunes doesn't recognize it as an output.
The device is an Audio-gd Digital Interface and I want to use it because the USB section of my Marantz SA8004 is awful. I know it's probably a quick fix but I'm at a loss.

Is this a USB hard drive or a USB thumb drive?
If hard drive is it one of the USB powered drives, IE No AC Adapter to supply power to the drive?

  • I2C data send using USB-to-I2C converter

    Hi guys me again
Just when things started to look good another trouble comes
We thought we will buy NI-8451 to implement I2C. We contacted NI also but suddenly another student comes and says we can implement I2C using Devantech USB-to-I2C converter..
Can it be implemented using VISA(all operation of I2C like read, write, ack, clock stretching)???
    Thanks in advance

I never used that device, but ran across it while searching for alternate I2C and SPI devices. That uses a standard FTDI interface chip, so the device shows up as a serial device. So, yes, you'd be able to use VISA to communicate with it. Please check the documentation for the device in the future.

  • Are there any usb to parallel converter cables that work with iMac 10.6?

Have a Brother HL-5340D with damaged USB port, can I connect with a usb to parallel converter cable and have it work?

If you try to tweak the dock with third party software, that will corrupt the Dock preferences. Better to leave well enough alone.

  • None of the stores seem to have a spare for the iphone USB to Lightining converter cable, why is that????

The charger for my iphone5 is lost and I am trying to find a replacement. None of the stores have a stock of the original apple USB to lightning converter cables, most of them dont have it at all or have a third party cable from Gecko or some other brand. Cant see why they are not stocking original apple products despite them being premium resellers of Apple. Is apple even aware of all of this.

We're users here Vivek, not Apple.  Asking your question here is pointless.  We don't speak for Apple and would have no more idea than you do as to why these are out of stock.
Do you have a technical support issue?

  • No USB or SATA on G31M3-F intermittently

I have an MSI G31M3-F motherboard and it seems whenever I do some kind of hardware swap, for example add a hard drive, when I start it up, it doesn't recognize my USB ports or SATA ports.  Even if I revert the computer back to the exact setup it was at before doing the hardware swap, it still won't boot with USB and SATA.  If I leave it off for a while though, and turn it back on (like the next morning), everything's fine.  And then I can turn off the computer and back on indefinitely it seems, until I open the case and mess with hardware.  I updated the BIOS to 1.3 (the latest) and that didn't seem to help.  Do you think the board's just bad?  Thanks for your help

OK, here are some more details about my system:
    # Intel Core 2 Duo e7200 Wolfdale 2.53 GHz
    # G31M3-F motherboard with version 1.3 bios
    # 2 1 GB memory sticks, Kingston KVR800D2K2
    # Video card: GIGABYTE GV-NX86T256H GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
    # Seagate 500 GB SATA Hard Drive
    # No other add-on cards - peripherals: USB keyboard and mouse, USB printer, speakers, monitor connected with VGA cable (DVI to VGA adapater)
    # OS probably not relevant since problem is at post, but it's Windows XP SP3
    # Antec 430 W power supply, +12V1 17A, +12V2 17A, +5V 2A, +3.3V 28A
Another note: The system was just working fine at the above configuration.  Then, all I did was turn off the system, open it up, and connect an additional SATA HD (Deskstar 1 TB) (power and SATA connection of course).  Then when I powered up the system, I had no USB or SATA ports, so the system wouldn't boot.  When I went in to BIOS, it did not detect either SATA drive, and I couldn't get into BIOS with my USB keyboard, I had to use a PS/2 keyboard.
    Thanks!

  • K8N Neo2 Plat. SATA Converter

Hey there folks! I'm new to these forums, but not to MSI products. I recently upgraded to a K8N NEO2 Platinum, an A64 3500+ and a WD SATA 80GB SATA drive. I also have a Maxtor 120GB IDE drive that I want to use in this system as a storage drive. Well since I had 1 IDE drive and a new SATA drive I went ahead and got one of those IDE-to-SATA converters so I could keep everything SATA. Well, everything installed ok, but win explorer is not seeing the IDE drive that has the SATA converter on it. In the device manager it says that it is there and working properly, I just can't access the dang thing. I'm using SATA ports 3 and 4 on the motherboard since 1 and 2 didn't want to work at all. Is there anything I can do to be able to access this drive with the SATA converter? The SATA converter is labeled SABR1000DV. Here is a link to the SATA converter...
    http://www.sunix.com.tw/en/Promotion-1.php?sid=182#
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I bought a SATA HDD that had an adaptor like that so that is essesentially what you have.  I never could get it to work right.  I exchanged it for a SATA drive with a built in SATA interface and it worked just fine.  Thus I think the adapter caused problems.  Others, I know have used such adaptors on IDE drives and get them to work as SATA HDD's.
I don't know why some times the adaptors work and other times they don't.  This doesn't solve your problem but I hope it is helpful information none the lesss.
    Good luck.

  • USB PS2 Keyboard converter adapter worked fine in 10.5, issues in 10.6

I'm a mac user with a fetish for old IBM Model M clicky keyboards. After some sniffing around and buying a few cheap adapters that didn't work, I found this product on www.clickykeyboards.com :
    http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/11298/subcatid/ 0/id/124184
In short, it doesn't seem to work right with key modifiers in 10.6 whereas it did in 10.5
    =======
    The longer story with details...
In leopard, it worked like a charm. Most important to me of course was flexibility of layout in the modifier keys. Starting from the bottom left, standard mac layout is:
    control ... option(alt) ... command(apple)
My keyboard (late 80's classic Model M) has:
ctrl ... [grey plastic] ... alt
...and the normal functionality you get when you plug in a standard 104-key windows keyboard to a mac by USB is:
    ctrl = control
    alt = option
    windows = command
So I map as follows using the modifier keys remap function in the keyboard pane of sysprefs:
    ctrl = control
alt = command (so it's in the same place that it would be on a mac keyboard
    caps lock = option
And it worked beauty. The LED's for num/caps/scroll didn't do anything, which was fine, who needs them. And when I booted to WinXP via BootCamp, it also worked properly. F12 worked for both eject and dashboard, awesome.
Just got the new snow-kitty and the remap stopped working! All the keys on the board work as designed, but no matter how I map the modifier keys in SysPrefs, alt is locked to option, ctrl to ctrl, caps lock to caps lock, the LED's work again (weird), and I have no apple key! It's like the remap values I choose are getting overridden in hardware or something.
Anyone have any ideas? Could be the USB/PS2 converter needs a 10.6 driver, but I can't figure out who the manufacturer is...
Before anyone suggests it, using a newer keyboard is not under any circumstances a viable option

Already asked them earlier today, awaiting reply. They've been very helpful in the past so fingers crossed.
I see this getting fixed by either a driver update from the manufacturer, which I'm not super-confident about since the converter has kind of a brand-X chinese vibe and no documentation whatsoever, or a different (perhaps newer) converter. Will post any follow-up I get from clickykeyboards.com here.
