Usb transfer rate decay drastically
hi to everybody,
i have a problem:
when i transfer to an usb, transfer rate decay drastically
tested with USB flash and microSD card with its adaptor; with Mac OS i reach the maximum, for example 10MB/s, and the transfer rate remains constant; if i use arch, it reach the maximum but after some time decay to 2 MB/s.....
is normal ??? anybody have this issue ???
Much has been posted in many distros concerning the USB flash problem.
A tutorial regarding the design of Flash devices reveals the basic problem with Flash in general.
It is designed to perform in u know what..windows. The design sets up Flash in FAT32 and lo and behold it runs best in windows!
Trying to get the industry to design specially for Linux is like trying to get a donkey to move.
There seems to be workarounds for various applied "imbedded" flash for elements of the Linux system such as usr and etc wherein reads and writes are minimal.
Cheaper Flash devices vary widely in performance due to algorithms provided or not.
Flashbench and bonnie++ are programs which provide analysis of Flash devices to determine performance of the devices under various modes. Many of the devices thusly analyzed are listed on the internet for users to examine...Linaro seems to be the main activity for such reports.
One recommend for Linux is to use ext4 and have at least 8GB of memory available..therefore 64bit. There probably are reasons for not going that route for some (including the cost).
Raid is also recommended.
The picture is indeed clouded and has been for years.
Perhaps a way to use FAT in Linux will come along but don't hold your breath!

Usb transfer rate problem with bootcamp
hello
drivers for uEye cameras are only available for windows platforms. so i am running windows xp on the latest mac mini with the latest bootcamp drivers in order to use the camera.
everything works great until i plug in another usb device. the transfer rate of the camera decreases dramatic (1/2). the second usb device is an usb hub with a microcontroller. it consumes only low transfer rates.
this constellation works perfect on other pcs. i can't compare it on os x because no drivers for the camera are available.
are there known issues with usb transfer rates on intel mac minis? firewire cameras and harddrives should suffer similar problems.

To address this specific point - no, there are no known issues with USB transfer rates that are common to Macs but not PCs. The weakness of the USB standard is that it is controlled by the host system rather than a dedicated controller, thus transfer rates (on both Mac and PC platforms) are determined by what the system is doing overall. As a result, transfer rates vary quite dramatically. Firewire, on the other hand, has a dedicated controller which ensures that a consistent data rate is achieved, almost regardless of other system activity. That's why you will often see it recommended that FW is used for external drives rather than USB, since while USB will generally provide better burst rates of data transfer, FW will generally provide far better sustained data rates, despite being theoretically slower.
In your situation, I can't help but wonder if the hub you mention is not causing the system some issues. It would not have to be a matter of it causing any significant data transfer itself, but could be the result of the hub's controller forcing the system into activity which then suppresses potential performance from the camera.
One thing is sure: if the camera works well without the hub connected, but degrades in performance with it, the issue is not with the system or the camera, but the hub. -

Somethings going on with my MacPro. It's a 2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon and it's having extreme difficulty recently transferring files. Currently I'm transferring a file from one of my external HDs to another (something I've done millions of times in the past) and it's going to take 35 minutes to transfer a 975.1mb file. This would take less than a minute on my iBook G4.
What could be the problem here and does anyone have a good suggestion to solve it? This is painful.

Here is what I have noticed since getting my 20" iMac. When I transfer files TO my iPod on my PC, it is about twice as fast as copying the same files to my iMac. They are both USB 2.0 Is this just as basic as the difference in copying to or from the ipod? Just a little odd to me...

IPad2 - transfer rate USB to Win7 (direct acces) extremly slow
Hi Guys,
I´ve an iPad2 and like to download 50GB of raw pictures (used the Camera Connection Kit for this) to my Windows7 PC.
Connection via USB work, so I have direct access to my pictures but it´s incredible slow (1.6MB/s).
I´ve also tried it with another PC (also W7), same issue.
Any ideas?

yes, 50GB is indeed a lot - but that´s the consequence of travelling around with a DSLR :-)
Nevertheless, it took not long to transfer them from my SD Card.
I´ve using of course a USB2.0 port, other devices like my portable HDD are running quite smooth.
I´ve read some tests done by photosgrafs and all of them are fine with the USB transfer rate.
Still no clue what´s wrong.

Hanging iMac, slow transfer rates

I'm experiencing two problems with my iMac which I think are probably linked as they began around the same time. I've scoured these forums and several other websites for answers but I haven't found many people whose problems sound exactly like mine.
My iMac was running Tiger up until around a year and a half ago. I then upgraded to Leopard without any issues, and everything ran smoothly. About a year ago I began to experience some strange behaviour - Flash would repeatedly crash, my mouse seemed unresponsive, and the system began to hang as though it was having trouble processing things. I reinstalled Leopard and things seemed ok, though the hanging remained (at this stage it was just the umbrella spinning and things taking longer to load). I upgraded to Snow Leopard hoping this would fix the issue when it came out and things got incredibly bad. Starting up and loading to the desktop took upwards of twenty minutes!! Doing ANYTHING seemed to be a massive strain on the system. I'd literally have to spend an hour or so monitoring it just to check my email and shut down in the correct way. Additionally the USB transfer speed, and download speed, had dropped to the point where a 20mb file had an estimated time of 2 hours to or transfer from my external hard drive. Internet downloads were similar.
After as many tests as I could manage I thought it might be RAM related, and upgraded to 3gig. It had no noticeable effect. Recently, whilst trying to solve the problem, I gritted my teeth and backed everything up. I wiped the system entirely, and tried a clean install of Leopard (the last functioning OS I had). It worked, in so far as the catastrophically slow behaviour stopped, but I'm STILL left with the slow transfer speeds, and the hanging. I've since re-upgraded to Snow Leopard, and this time it functions in the exact same way as Leopard.
To describe the problem in detail: Every few seconds - the time between varies from 2s - a minute - the system stops responding for a seemingly arbitrary amount of time. Often the umbrella appears. However, when it appears frozen the dock usually responds without any issues (though is entirely impotent as I can't open anything, including Finder) and if I'm typing then when it returns to my control anything I typed will usually appear. My USB transfer rates remain, even when there's no issue, extremely low. Same with downloads. The most bizarre thing for me is that during the times the system is responding (during which is can often manage multiple tasks without any complaint) it moves and respons in an incredibly speedy, efficient way - as though the RAM upgrade has really helped.
I've tried repairing disk permissions, checking activity monitor to see what may be a strain on the system (everything looks entirely normal), I've run several diagnostics (including tests on the new RAM and the old RAM and on the external hard drives), defragged, turned out absolutely EVERYTHING unnecessary... Nothing I do seems to have any effect on this behaviour! Does anyone have ANY ideas? It's going to be a real pain to get it to an Apple store.
Edit: The reinstallation of an OS, or wiping of the hard drive took between 18 and 24 hours a time, despite it usually showing a countdown from 30 minutes the whole time.

Have you tried booting from the Snow Leopard disk, running Disk Utility and checking the startup disk for errors? If not...
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space
If the startup disk appears to be ok and there's enough free disk space, try running the Apple Hardware Test
If the AHT doesn't report any problems...

Try uninstalling the reinstalling a new copy of flash then repair disk permissions.

How to get better than 5.2MB/s transfer rate from USB 2.0 on Mac Mini

I've got a circa 2007 Mac Mini with 1GB of RAM, running Snow Leopard. Connected to this is a USB 2.0 500GB Seagate Freeagent drive from circa 2008. As far as I know, the USB disk is free of errors.
I am trying to use dd with a block size of 1MB to transfer a 250GB file from an Ethernet mounted Time Capsule drive to the USB disk on /dev/disk1.
A dd from the Time Capsule to the /dev/null gives me a transfer rate of ~35-40MB/s. However, when the target is /dev/disk1, the transfer rate is only around 5MB/s. I checked the system profiler and disk1 is connected to the USB High Speed Bus.
Any clues on how to improve USB 2.0 transfer performance?Fragmentation is unlikely to be an issue since I was trying to write to the raw block device with dd which is as close to a pure sequential write scenario as one is likely to encounter (e.g. no small block, random access involved)
From a Linux host, I was able to dd to a file on the disk's file system at 20MB/s.
I'll run some other tests with another disk to see whether the issue is peculiar to the disk or to the Mac's USB subsystem. -
Will a USB 3.0 to FireWire adapter make my transfer rates faster?
I have a MBP 2010 15 inch that only has a measly UB 2.0 and a (less measly) FireWire port. I have an external sea gate 3tb backup plus desktop hard drive that had a USB 3.0 cable. However, as stated earlier, my MBP only has a USB 2.0 port. But it seems the FireWire port might have better transfer rates. If I used a USB 3.0 to FireWire would it have greater transfer speeds, and by how much? If there is an even better way to connect my hard drive to my aforementioned MBP, please tell me. And if anybody has a good adapter recommendation, please tell me.
There is no such thing as a USB-FireWire adapter/converter. USB and FireWire are electrically and protocol incompatible.
Seagate does make an accessory unit called the STAE 123 that works with the following drives to provide a FW800 interface:

Super slow USB stick transfer rate. 2 Gigs in 2 hours ?
How can i speed up my USB memory stick transfer rate.
I'm using 2.4 GHz intel core i5 with 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Yet my 1 GHz windows laptop is much faster in copying files for the same memory stick.
How can i fix this?You will not be able to use it on the Windows box if you change the formatting. But then you can buy another flash drive for Windows since they are cheap.
Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size. -
Zen Micro USB 2.0 Transfer Rate Prob
Hi all!
I have searched through the posts here and havn't found a definiti've answer to my question. My question is:
Do you have to be running Creative Media Source in order to get the full USB 2.0 Transfer Rate capability from the Zen Micro?
I have noticed that I have had some pretty slow transfer rates with Windows Media Player 0 but the rate is lightning fast in Creative Media Source. Maybe I am missing some sort of setting.
On another note, I have noticed the sensitivity of the Touch Pad on my Zen Micro is kinda flakey. Sometimes it's very sensitve and sometimes parts of the pad are totally unresponsi've. Here is my observation on the matter. When you turn the player on, the power button snaps back into the other direction if you let go if it quickly. When this happens the button is on the edge of being locked/unlocked so it is sort of intermitantly shorting out. If i slide the button slightly to the left and then let go, the full functionality of the pad is then restored. I think maybe the spring that keeps the button from staying in the off position is too large a spring and needs to be shortened.my bad, but i should have mentioned that I have a zen touch 40 gig rather than a micro. So I guess no solution yet in my case. It just seems to me that Creative is paying much more attention to the Micro
(MTP support, new firmwares,...) than to their other players, including the touch. they have been talking about a firmware upgrade for the "touch" for months now, but still nothing. The only reason I did not purchase a micro was for its capacity. other than that, not only it gets more development and support attention, but the interface of the player is much better than the Touch, and it seems to work like a charm with WMP 0. Why couldn't they carry the 20Gig micro in North America....

How to find the max data transfer rate(disk speed) supported by mobo?
I plan on replacing my current HDD with a new and bigger HDD.
For this I need to know the max data transfer rate(disk speed) that my mobo will support. However, dmidecode is not telling me that. Am I missing something?

So I guess, when I get the new HDD, I will first set it to AHCI and then install the OSes on it. See if NCQ helps any, and if not I will turn it back and re-install (if I have to). I am planning to have Windows only in virtualbox in the new drive.
Anyhoo, while I was in the BIOS I found two things which I had questions about :
1) Under Onboard Devices --> Integrated NIC , my setting is currently set at "On w/PXE" and it says the default should be just "On". Would it be ok to change it back to On since its a single machine and its not booting an OS on any server. I just don't want to have to re-install anything now since I will be doing that in the new HDD.
2) How would I know whether my BIOS would support a 64 bit OS in Virtualbox? I checked some setting under Virtualization, but they weren't very clear.

How to achieve high usb data rate with cRIO-9022?
Hi all,
I read the datasheet of NI-9022 and know that USB data rate can be 480Mb/s.
I want to transfer data with rate 3.6MB/s which is much slower than the spec, but the result is time out error.
I check my FPGA and RT code by save to RT disk and the result is pass. So I think my code should be correct.
Is that because the USB driver not installed into RT?
Should I install the USB driver into RT?
Or is there any other issue I haven't find?

approximately 700 KB/s.
Also, you don't need a driver to get a USB mass storage device to work on the cRIO. Have a look at this document:

Not sure if these issues are causing timeout errors. What happens when you transfer data at lower speeds? Do you get timeout errors then?

How to achieve the maximum file transfer rate from PXI to local host?
I will have to copy a huge amount of data (as big as 50 GB) from a PXI-8106 unit on site to a laptop. Currently it would take several hours. It is critical to max out the data transfer rate.
The standard method we've been using is just drag and drop using Windows Explorer via FTP. I tried to use FTP VIs with Filezilla Server as well but the transfer rate is only like 1.5 MB/s. Is this normal? Once I saw it was 3.0 MB/s but for some reason, that isn't happening now.
For another option, I tried to transfer data to a USB flash drive but it's even slower. As far as I know, USB 2.0 transfer rate is supposed to be around 60 MB/s but why would it be slower than 1.5 MB/s? What could be the speed limiting factor in my file transfer setup?
Any tips on improving file transfer rate would be appreciated!Sustained 40 MB/s? That is my dream speed! The maximum speed I've ever seen here was about 25 MB/s, which is still very good, and that happened only after copying back and forth, which I explained above. Let me go through what I did with screencaps first.
These are the test tdms files to transfer in the PXI: an original file witten in the PXI and its copy file. I copied the original file from PXI to laptop and renamed it (added '_copy') and then copied it back to PXI.

This is the FTP sub VI I'm using. It transfers files in sub-folders (one level lower), too. The data connection is set to 'passive' on the FTP Put Multiple Files VI but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I attach the sub VI.
You tried the file transfer with a 500 MB text file. Would there be any difference if the file type was tdms? Would the RAM size matter? It is 2GB here.
And the LED is orange, which means Gigabit.
Another question: Is there any way to programmatically stop file transfer in progress? Currently, I just have to restart the PXI.

How can I check the data transfer rate of my FW800 port
I have an iMac 2.4 20 inch (MB323LL/A) with a Lacie external rugged hard drive (320 GB). I have attached it using my FW800 port with the cable supplied with the drive.
It seems slow to me so I was wondering if there is any way to see what the current data transfer is for a backup in progress. Of course it should be 800Mbps but is it really moving at that speed ? How can I tell what speed it is transferring at ? Can I use the same method for USB ports too ?When you move a large file, you are more likely to see a sustained transfer rate than a small file. Small files have to be individually read/write back and forth, thus slows the actual transfer rate down. If you are moving any file up to 4 GB and probably over 1 MB you'll see more realistic transfer rates. Furthermore your hard drive access time, and RPM figures into the equation too, as well as how much RAM you have. 800Mbps works out to 100 Megabytes per second under ideal conditions.

Difference in data transfer rates between winXP and Linux server?

I am using a winXP laptop to act as my server (all usb external hard drives are connected to it) but the data transfer rates can be really slow. Is Linux faster in that regard? Can a Linux based server provide faster data transfer rates?

Bmora96Linux cannot make hardware go any faster - so if WinXP and its drivers are making optimal use of those USB drives and the USB data transfer pipe, Linux will not make it faster. (but installing Linux and going Tux are always excellent ideas that need no real reason either ;-) )
Real question you should be asking is if using a notebook in a server role is wise thing to do?
