USB transfer??

I have a sony mini DV camera, model DCR-HC30 and it uses USB. I am trying to transfer some footage into imovie and/or my toast software but my computer doesn't recognize anything being attached. is there something I need to do to have my imac recognize my camera??

jtc1021,
Your camera also has a FireWire port. Sony calls it iLink but, for some reason, they don't provide you with the cable.
You can pick-up a 4 to 6 pin FireWire cable anywhere that sells computer accessories. No need to buy a Sony branded one.

  • USB transfer modes

Could any one tell me about the USB transfer modes in X5-01. When I am in PC suite mode, is it safe to copy and paste files to my memory card?. I asked this because one of the songs I copied to my SD card stopped playing at a particular point and then I restarted the phone and now that song is playing completely fine. For some troubleshooting purpose  I formatted my mem card and  *#7370* my phone for a total reset and started copying all the music files again to SD card in PC suite mode. I disconnected phone from PC and opened the gallery. The gallery is now starting for the first time and displayed a message "Repairing corrupt media Library" and it added all the files. Why the media files are corrupted. Is that because I pasted the songs directly to the mem card in PC suite mode other than the Mass Storage mode?. What is the significance of Mass Storage mode.

If I was putting music on a memory card , I'd incert card in PC load up all the music an simply replace in phone ! May hep reading these also !

  • USB transfer hangs, Finder freezes - cannot relaunch Finder

Is there a way to FORCE a relaunch of the Finder when it hangs during a USB transfer (to a mobile phone) ?
I use Relaunch Finder, Actitivity Monitor, etc, to no avail. The Finder will not re-launch.
Everything else works (such as this Safari use of Apple Forums).
Restarting the Mac is a drag.

    Eric,
I really thank you for your quick response. Before I try that, I need to explain something I just did- My time machine backup external hard drive is actually a guardian maximus 2 slot raid 1 setup to mirror so I have 2 disks. Before I do anything to reset time machine, I took that Guardian Maximus and tried to connect direct to my computer to read it. It would not recognize it. then I took out BOTH hard drives and tried to read them individually. Disk Utility said BOTH needed repair. The odd thing is that the Guardian lights did not turn red on either one- both lights green. Which is what its supposed to do. Any suggestions based on this information?
I really do appreciate all you in the forum provide.

  • Slow USB transfer

I can't figure out how to replicate this yet, but it's happened twice today. I'm stuck and don't know what to look at next, but it's a problem.
My USB transfer speeds slowed to a crawl on a 2GB directory copied via Ranger just now, and earlier on a larger transfer. Several GB took ~2 hours over USB 2.0 from ext4 HDD to fat32 USB. The USB stick is RadioShack's GigaWare brand and shows up as Sandisk in lsusb, and never been formatted since i opened it.
Looks like ehci_hcd is loading properly for the disk. usb 8-2 is my mouse. Got a USB fan plugged in (one 5V one), too.
I haven't modified the udev rules and usually let udiskie mount things.

First of all, what I'm about to say may be close to worthless... but that never stopped me before

Looks like ehci_hcd is loading properly for the disk. usb 8-2 is my mouse. Got a USB fan plugged in (one 5V one), too.
    combined with this:

I have a nettop powered by one of those little 90W "brick" power supplies and if I plug my Hauppage USB TV adapter into the sucker it draws so much power that all hell breaks loose on the system. I can't tell how badly though because the USB keyboard goes dead.
A powered USB hub fixed that issue.
But again, I have no idea if this is even remotely related to your errors.
Another thing (since I'm on a roll with bad advice)... I've got some USB flash drives that are simply dog slow... they just are. Put a different brand into the same slot and do the same operations and the difference is amazing. Plus, you don't mention the size of the USB flash drive, but they are known to get slower on writes the closer they are to being full... that's just how they roll.

When I bought the computer the usb transfer speed, was fast, but have become very slow over time.

This is a know issue for last 2 years and there has been no response from Apple. I guess its time to ditch mac and install Ubuntu.

  • Usb transfer rate decay drastically

    hi to everybody,
    i have a problem:
when i transfer to an usb, transfer rate decay drastically
tested with USB flash and microSD card with its adaptor; with Mac OS i reach the maximum, for example 10MB/s, and the transfer rate remains constant; if i use arch, it reach the maximum but after some time decay to 2 MB/s.....
is normal ??? anybody have this issue ???

Much has been posted in many distros concerning the USB  flash problem.
A tutorial regarding the design of Flash devices reveals the basic problem with Flash in general.
It is designed to perform in u know what..windows.  The design sets up Flash in FAT32 and lo and behold it runs best in windows!
Trying to get the industry to design specially for Linux is like trying to get a donkey to move.
There seems to be workarounds for various applied "imbedded" flash for elements of the Linux system such as usr and etc wherein reads and writes are minimal.
Cheaper Flash devices vary widely in performance due to algorithms provided or not.
Flashbench and bonnie++ are programs which provide analysis of Flash devices to determine performance of the devices under various modes.  Many of the devices thusly analyzed are listed on the internet for users to examine...Linaro seems to be the main activity for such reports.
One recommend for Linux is to use ext4 and have at least 8GB of memory available..therefore 64bit.  There probably are reasons for not going that route for some (including the cost).
    Raid is also recommended.
The picture is indeed clouded and has been for years.
Perhaps a way to use FAT in Linux will come along but don't hold your breath!

  • USB transfer speed checker

In windows 7 it's quite easy to see the transfer speed of say a USB drive, but I've been trying to search up some sort of app or widget that can tell you how fast the USB transfer speed is, just to gauge the performance. I know there is xbench but that's just read/write speeds. Thanks.

  • 2 Questions:Canon7D direct USB transfer to ipad AND CF cardreader comp....

I have a new 7D on order and am wondering if I won't have quite as easy of a time getting images onto the ipad as I do now with my T1i. I read in a review on DPreview that the 7D is not setup as a direct transfer protocol and instead has to install something onto the host computer (which would obviously not work on an iPad) in order to use a USB cable to transfer directly.
Has anyone tried to direct USB transfer from the 7D to the USB Camera Connection kit? Does it work?
And secondly, is there a list of compatible USB CF card readers that will work with the USB CCK? As I believe I will need to buy one if the direct cable doesn't work. So far the two that I own don't work and say they require too much power.
    Thanks for any help.

My 7D transfers just fine to the i-pad, and very quickly mind you! It's surprising, normally hooking a camera direct to a computer and transferring is much slower than using a card reader, not so with the i-pad. I tried it both ways, card reader, and direct connect and the speed was almost identical. Also, my higher speed cards didn't seem to want to work, once I put the cards back in the camera and direct connected, they went right over.

  • GoodReader USB Transfer Program

GoodReader (an iOS app) has a 32 bit windows program (GoodReader USB) that allows easy drag and drop transferring of folders and files between my windows computer and my iPad.
Upgrading to the newest 64 bit version of iTunes disabled the GoodReader USB transfer program.  The program doesn't think iTunes is installed (because it only works with the 32 bit version).  GoodReader hasn't upgraded the transfer program yet and I've been told they might not.  I use this program several times per week and it's a hardship to loose its functionality.
I uninstalled iTunes, downloaded a 32 bit version of iTunes and tried to install it.  Unfortunately, the install doesn't work.  The install program essentially insisted that I needed the 64 bit version.  I've reinstalled the 64 bit iTunes 12 for the time being.  Is there any way to revert to the last version of iTunes that was running on my computer.
Alternately, is there another iOS app (similar to GoodReader) with as good a USB transfer program that lefts me drag and drop folders and files onto my iPad?

  • Usb transfer rate problem with bootcamp

    hello
drivers for uEye cameras are only available for windows platforms. so i am running windows xp on the latest mac mini with the latest bootcamp drivers in order to use the camera.
everything works great until i plug in another usb device. the transfer rate of the camera decreases dramatic (1/2). the second usb device is an usb hub with a microcontroller. it consumes only low transfer rates.
this constellation works perfect on other pcs. i can't compare it on os x because no drivers for the camera are available.
are there known issues with usb transfer rates on intel mac minis? firewire cameras and harddrives should suffer similar problems.
    greetings
    michael

are there known issues with usb transfer rates on
intel mac minis? firewire cameras and harddrives
    should suffer similar problems.
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
To address this specific point - no, there are no known issues with USB transfer rates that are common to Macs but not PCs. The weakness of the USB standard is that it is controlled by the host system rather than a dedicated controller, thus transfer rates (on both Mac and PC platforms) are determined by what the system is doing overall. As a result, transfer rates vary quite dramatically. Firewire, on the other hand, has a dedicated controller which ensures that a consistent data rate is achieved, almost regardless of other system activity. That's why you will often see it recommended that FW is used for external drives rather than USB, since while USB will generally provide better burst rates of data transfer, FW will generally provide far better sustained data rates, despite being theoretically slower.
In your situation, I can't help but wonder if the hub you mention is not causing the system some issues. It would not have to be a matter of it causing any significant data transfer itself, but could be the result of the hub's controller forcing the system into activity which then suppresses potential performance from the camera.
One thing is sure: if the camera works well without the hub connected, but degrades in performance with it, the issue is not with the system or the camera, but the hub.

  • HDMI  or USB transfer

Is there a difference in video quality when a transfer from a HD camera uses either an HDMI or USB link? I have always used firewire but the newer Canon HD cameras do not have this connection.

+Is there a difference in video quality when a transfer from a HD camera uses either an HDMI or USB link?+
If you capture live via HDMI then you may conceivably be able to capture a better quality signal from your camera by bypassing the in camera compression, however, if you are bringing in already compressed media from the camera then there is no quality benefit to be gained by capturing via HDMI vs transferring via USB.

  • MacBook Pro - iTunes USB Transfer Problem

I have a MacBook Pro. When i try and transfer my songs from iTunes to my 8GB usb drive, the screen kind of gets taken over by a grey screen with a light opacity and then my laptop completely freezes and there is a small dark grey box in the middle saying "You need to restart your computer. To restart hold down the power button"
*When i transfer about 80-100 songs it works okay, but its usually just the big transfers*
This has happened several times and I am just wondering if anyone had any possible idea as to what is causing this.
Note: I have tried different USB's so its not that
This is what the screen looks like...

    hey,
if i plug my N82 into a mac via usb cable will i be able to access and retrieve the files on my phone onto my mac straight away without any software upgrades like i've heard. i don't need to sync or anything just wan't to get a couple videos onto my mac?

    Hi james_reid69
You could use Nokia Multimedia Transfer which is fairly painless available here:http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/nokia-multimedia-transfer and your N82 can then be connected in PC Suite mode.
If you use N82 in data transfer mode don't be surprised if you can't eject it and consequently get a "data may be corrupted " message.
