USB transfers stop after ~400 MB
I have a Mac Mini I use as a home theater computer. Connected to it are 3 separate RAID sets (Set1, Set2, and Set3). All 3 sets are mirrored (RAID1), so there are 6 total hard drives -- Set1 is composed of 2x 2TB Hitachi HDDs, Set2 is 2x 2TB Seagates, and Set3 is 2x 3TB Western Digitals. Set1 and Set2 are housed in a Mediasonic ProBox 4-bay enclosure (USB 2.0 only), while Set3 is housed in a 2-bay Aukey enclosure (USB 3.0). All RAID sets were set up via Disk Utility, so all are formatted as Mac OS Journaled. Set1 and Set2 have been set up for about 5 years, while Set3 is relatively new. Everything is connected to the Mac via USB. I'm running the latest release of Yosemite (not Beta).
So now for the problem. When I try to copy files from Set1 to anything else (Mac Mini desktop, Set2, Set3, flash drive, etc.), the transfer essentially stops at about 400 MB into the job. The Finder transfer window doesn't close or crash, but it just seems frozen. The estimated time skyrockets. I'm able to push the X button to stop the transfer. The transfer rate when this happens isn't zero, but it might as well be -- it's like 1 MB per minute.
Weird thing is, I can copy files to Set1, just not from it. I've tried doing it with my Macbook Pro and i have the same problem, so it doesn't seem to be the computer. I can copy files from Set2 just fine (which is in the same HD enclosure), so it doesn't seem to be the enclosure. I've even tried physically swapping Set1 and Set2 to see if the bay connections were bad, but data transfers still slow to crawl at around 400 MB. I've tried different sized files, different types of files, restarting the computers and enclosures, rechecking connections... everything. I'm thoroughly stumped. Please help!

I've just replaced the MB, CPU, RAM sticks, video card and PSU after the previous MB died on me last week. The problem I've been having is that my mouse and keyboard (they're both USB) stop working as soon as Windows starts loading. They're both functioning during the boot sequence. USB controllers and USB Legacy Support are both enabled in BIOS. I've tried plugging in my old ps/2 keyboard but that one won't work either once Windows has started loading (although it just struck me that it's possible I accidentally plugged it into the mouse port). Any advice on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Was old mainboard that "died" on you same as the new mainboard?

Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2
Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.

Nothing out of the ordinairy. Thanks for any helpIt's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

1 of 2 USB ports stopped working after 10.7.2 upgrade
I have the newest Macbook Pro. I upgraded to 10.7.2 today and immediately after, 1 of my 2 usb ports stopped working. Thought it may be the cable, so I switched cables. Tried plugging in my iPhone, my portable drive and nothing. Both work on the other port though. Both ports worked fine before the update.
I've rebooted 4x.
Suggestions?Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

USB Ethernet stop working after hotplug
I have found that my Apple USB Ethernet dongle stop working if I plug in another USB device. This happens both using a USB hub, and when plugging directly into the MacBook Air. I also see this problem when using a similar dongle from another supplier (called AX88x72A). The USB Ethernet dongle works fine after booting, with status "Connected", but if I plug in another device like my phone or a USB drive, the status changes to "Cable Unplugged" after a few seconds, ifconfig no longer show the en1 interface, and syslog gives a few error lines such as:
Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: en1
Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: Ethernet \[AppleUSBEthernet\]: Link down on en1
Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
After this, I must reboot the MacBook Air to get the dongle working again. Do anybody know how to force the AppleUSBEthernet driver to rescan the device tree (or something similar)?
With regards,
Birger Retterstøl OlaisenI have exactly the same problem here (MacBook Air 2,1 - OSX 10.6.8). After several tries (and reboots!), I've found that an unload/reload of the USB Ethernet driver works.
Note that operation is not automatic: I have to execute commands in a terminal in order to retrieve my Ethernet connection... but it is far better than a reboot!
So, if you want to test my method, once you have plugged a USB key (or after an hotplug of your USB-ethernet dongle), you can execute these commands on your terminal (note there are 2 lines and no space in the kext name, a space may be inserted by this forum):
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
Of course, i've made a small script with these commands, and copied it on my PATH so it is even easier to execute it. It works perfectly for me, and I hope it could help.

IPod Classic Starts to Sync But Stops After 5 Seconds
I'd appreciate help with this...
Two days ago, my iPod Classic stopped syncing. I don't think this is the situation where the device is not recognized. When I connect with the USB, the iPod appears in iTunes and it starts to sync but then stops after about 5 seconds. I have the latest iTunes (11.0.5) and iPod software; I re-set the iPod; and I ran a check for errors on the iPod, but it came back clean; I can't erase the latest backup in Properties because it's empty.
Here's what I don't understand - I ran a diagnostic on the connection but it was ok; when I ran a diagnostic on sync, it said no iPod was found -- even though I had the same connection when I ran the diagnostic a few seconds earlier. I know that the iPod is recognized because I can drag podcasts onto the iPod when it's connected.
Any ideas? I'd rather not have to reinstall iTunes.

I had a similar problem, all you can do at present to rectify this is to grab your playlist or new created playlist or song from the main library or playlist and drop it into the ipod tab under devices and it will auto sync the changes or songs. Hope this helps.
There seems to be a problem with the syncing of itunes 11 (mine is 11.0.5) when you just use the normal sync method. the above should work and has worked for me when transfering a playlist straight into the ipod it automatically syncs.
Regards.

Tis a minor issue but...
The keyboard / mouse stops working on my duel 2 GHz G5 and the cure is unpluging from the USB port and plugging back in. Nothing is plugged into the keyboard port and the other port is taken by a Preps i-Key dongle. This seems to have started happening after upgrading to 10.4.8. USB Ports Stop Working Randomly
This problem never occurred in Mavericks.
I use a Logitech Wave Keyboard + Mouse combo and have logitech control center installed. Periodically, the mouse and keyboard will just stop working. Built in keyboard and trackpad still work. I try plugging in other peripherals (other mice, flash drive, external) and none of the USB ports work after this happens. I restart and the computer hangs on a black screen with the keyboard backlit and mouse still moveable (with the trackpad). After I force shutdown the computer and turn it on again, the problem goes away. However, it's only a matter of time before the problem happens again and I have to go through the same process.
This is with a early 2014 13" Air.
Any ideas? I may just go ahead and reinstall the OS.Hi sbao26975,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the Mac is having trouble recognizing USB devices. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

Time capsule with USB printer stop to work.
Two months ago, I installed a brand new Time Capsule 2T. Initial configuration went without any issue.I installed an HP wireless printer and a second HP Laserjet to the USB port on time capsule. Everything was working well and suddenly the printer hooked on USB port stop working. Print job remains in the queue and nothing happens even using my MBP or using a PC connected to Time Capsule. The wireless printer is still working fine. So, I did a soft reset by pressing the button at the back of Time Capsule but it doesn't solve the problem. Both MBP and PC cannot connect to USB printer. The only way to recover printing capability is to unplug power on Time Capsule and re-plug it. In this case, MBP and PC could print. I don't know when this issue begins and I cannot predict when printing capability issue on USB printer will occur. I'm pretty sure this a Time Capsule issue or OS issue.
Couple things I tried:
- Uninstalled printer and re-added
- All drivers are up-to-date
- Time Capsule firmware is up-to-date
- MBP running OS X Mountain Lion with latest patches
- PC Windows Vista Ultimate with latest patches.
Any idea what could cause this? The only way to recover printing capability is to unplug power on Time Capsule and re-plug it. In this case, MBP and PC could print. Yes, your solution of the power cycle of the TC shows that this is caused solely by the poor networking ability of the TC. There is a flaw in the firmware that is causing the issue. The issue affects a number of things.. yours is just one example of it.
There is no solution. I cannot even give you a true work around using just the TC..
Best solution is of course to get a network printer.. usb is seldom designed for network usage. You can purchase an ethernet to USB print server but the cost of the item would be half the cost of the new printer. And useless item into the future. So consider carefully.. maybe time for a new printer.
In the TC do the following.
1. Reduce the firmware to 7.6.1 if you recently installed latest 7.6.3 that could be some of the issue.. it has proven less than great update. Hold down option key when you select firmware and you can downgrade.
2. Factory reset after you do 1. or do it anyway if you want to stick to the latest klugde firmware. But clean up the old settings by using new setup.
3. Use all names that comply to windows standard.
Short,, 10-20 characters should be plenty.. less than 10 also good.
No spaces..
Pure alphanumeric.
4. If the TC is set to main router, set the dhcp server to much shorter lease time. I suggest even 20min. The increase in network traffic for dhcp renewal will be tiny.. but it will keep ARP tables updated better than the full day used by default.
5. From the windows side make sure the TC is set to the correct workgroup under file sharing.. generally WORKGROUP.
6. If you still have issues.. and I think you may mitigate the problem but not resolve it doing the above.. a nightly auto reboot from an electrical timer.. crude but we have done such things before to fix crummy domestic level router to make them reliable. -
