  • USB upgrade - How many licences?

    Hi,
I have three machines I wish to upgrade to Lion from SL, and downloading is not an option. Can I install Lion on all three from one purchased USB upgrade, or do I have to sting myself three times over?
    Thanks

Here is what I copied from the Apple Store USB Lion page:
OS X Lion Software License Agreement
The OS X Lion Software License Agreement allows you to install and use the software for your personal, non-commercial use on all the Macs you own or control that are running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Snow Leopard Server (a Mac Computer). Commercial enterprises or educational institutions can install and use one copy of the software for use either a) by a single individual on each Mac Computer that the enterprise or educational institution owns or controls, or b) by multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Computer that the enterprise or educational institution owns or controls (for example, in a resource center or library). You can also use the software in accordance with the terms of a volume or maintenance license (purchased separately). Full license terms can be found at http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/.

  • USB Upgrade Question

I want to upgrade to usb 2.0 in my powermac G4 MDD dual 1.0GHZ. Can I just use a PCI USB card like the one on Macconnection?
    http://www.macconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=462745

I see I misspelled "Allegro." That's the one in my MDD. More info here: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegro_usb2.html
I just ran into the first problem with mine. A couple of weeks ago I bought a Sony card reader to go with a new digicam. It works fine ion the MBP but caused wake-from-sleep issues on the MDD. First time this has happened since upgrading to Tiger.
I've seen some info that the sleep behavior, in addition to preferring NEC chips, finds that the internal plumbing of some USB devices varies, meaning some work transparently and others don't.
The advice in Japamac's link is very useful, especially the part about dismounting devices when you are done using them.

  • IMac G4 USB upgrade

Would this be possible in a iMac G4 800 mhz 15"?
    http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/dator-kringutrustning/datortillbehor/usb-tillbeho r/usb-uttag/pin-till-usb-jack-adapter-p98621
I guess not, but i am just checking

But if I get a powered USB hub, it will not be USB 2.0
Right. Nothing you can plug into a USB 1.1 port can turn it into a USB 2.0 port. The only way to add USB 2 to a computer that didn't ship with it is to install a USB adaptor card in an expansion slot, and iMacs do not have the required slots nor can such slots be retrofitted to an iMac.

  • Upgrading the G3 /DT with USB PCI Card for Printer Connection

I would like to connect a Brother MFC-9160 laser printer to one of my Beige G3 /DT with Macintosh OS 9.2.2 installed.
There are two ways to do that: USB or Parallel. I don't know if Parallel adapters for Macintosh are available. This is the reason why I am favouring the solution of PCI USB upgrade.
The problem is that the few USB adapters I saw on sale on various French Mac warehouses were all USB 2.0 compliant, and required a Power Macintosh G3 /BW.
I suppose that a USB 2.0 compliant card is also de facto USB 1.1 compliant, but I am not sure. Besides the hardware issue, there is of course the problem of support on a Beige G3 for USB 1.1.
Could you please elaborate on the hardware which would run on a Beige G3? I am open to any friendly advice
    Frederic W. Erk

By the way I wonder if it would be possible to
connect to the laser printer through electricity
network. No cables, here because the building in 400
years old and too large. Wireless, he he... Not even
    worth speaking about it....
I'm not sure about what kind of electrical wiring you have available over there, or if these kind of products are compatible, but there are some options in the US for using the electrical outlets in a house to create a LAN network. With this kind of network you could use keep the printer on the B&W and turn on USB printer sharing. Printing from OS 9 on the G3 might not work with all printers. That kind of networking equipment is more costly than just adding a USB PCI card to the G3 to use the printer directly, but you might also be able to share a single high-speed internet connection that way. It all depends on what your needs are.
Is this what you were asking about?

  • IRQ problems?, especially with USB.... read this

Summary: the following things are listed to help people configure or disable USB and USB IRQ related options, some steps may help diagnose/eliminate other IRQ problems. Some Operating Systems/Motherboards may have Similiar or Alternative ways to preform the following options,(Some may not be compatible with these Options):
From initial installation problems to suddenly not working USB, cleaning up the Device manager in Safe mode is the first step. Many hardware related problems in Windows can be traced to ghost devices and duplicate device entries. Obsolete and/or duplicate devices can ONLY be seen and removed in Windows Safe Mode. This procedure MUST be performed in SAFE MODE.
USB can only share its IRQ with other USB Host controllers (such as a USB upgrade card, if applicable) and IRQ Holder for PCI Steering. (Some of the newer motherboards can share USB Devices with their On-Board Devices,ex: K7N2 Delta
In most cases for mother boards the First and Last PCI slot share the same IRQ as the AGP slot. This is not always the case, and is usually addressed in the motherboard's manual. In some motherboards there are other slots that share IRQ's with other on board devices, these can lead to conflicts and errors later; try changing cards in PCI slots around.
Sometimes you may find that when you have installed a new card (or device) into the system, other devices such as the sound card may stop working. Once again, the resource configuration needs to be changed. Do so by going to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, (Com1) ,or other port's properties, disable usage. This is also the best way of disabling hardware so that if necessary the customer can turn the hardware back on through windows rather than having to play in the BIOS.After disabling a device in the BIOS boot to Safe Mode and delete the device from the Windows Device Manager. If the device is not removed from the Windows Device Manager in Safe Mode, Windows will continue to recognize the device and Windows will continue to assign it an IRQ.
In some versions of the Award, AMI and Phenix bios you can select Plug and Play OS installed. This option lets you decide whether windows should handle the IRQ routing of devices or if the BIOS should handle the routing. Please note that if this option is enabled windows will show a completely different setup of IRQ's then what the BIOS reports You may wish to toggle this option if you find that moving the card dosn't work. This in some cases will change the way windows will assign IRQ's. In most cases this will help but not in all.
Another section that you might want to look at is if the IRQ's are being assigned manually or automatically. Sometimes it is better to manually assign IRQ's and other times it is better to automatically assign them. You can do so by entering your BIOS... should be listed under PNP/OS or PNP/PCI Configuration. ( You must disable Plug N Play feature for this to work!)
Properly installed IRQ Steering is critical to correctly working USB. If IRQ Steering is disabled the likely cause is improper BIOS settings. See the section on BIOS Settings. Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, System Devices, PCI Bus...If you do not have the following options, then obviously your system shouldn't be configured this way. Seek alternative means to enable/disable them. View Status, go to Settings tab, Use Hardware should be enabled, go to IRQ Steering tab... The following options should be checked... Use IRQ Steering, Get IRQ table using ACPI BIOS, GET IRQ table using MS Specification table, Get IRQ table from Real Mode PCIBIOS 2.1 call.... Under IRQ Routing Status the following should be displayed: (AMD) system should read: IRQ Steering Enabled, IRQ Table read from ACPI BIOS. (Intel) system should read: IRQ Table read from MS IRQ Routing Specification), IRQ Miniport Data processed successfully, IRQ Miniport loaded successfully. If IRQ Steering is not enabled. Reboot the system to the BIOS setup (Usually holding the DEL key at bootup) and Enable (Plug and Play Operating System). Set (Assign IRQs) AUTO or System. IRQ Steering is essential to proper USB connectivity. BIOS control of Power Management should be Disabled or set to User...
If all the above doesn't work, you can look at the hardware in the computer and disable any that is not nessasary. This will free up some IRQs and on the next reboot the IRQs may be reshuffled to a better configuration. Common hardware that is good to disable are com ports and USB controllers.  If you are not using your serial port for anything, disable COM1. If you are not using your USB try disabling the USB controllers and hubs. If you are using a USB mouse, try pulling it into the PS/2 port if possible. All these things will free up and change the available IRQ's, and allow USB devices to automatically select them.
Disable USB Error Detection In Windows Standard Mode, Device Manager, USB Host Controllers, (SiS, Standard, ect..)USB Open Host Controller, Advanced, Enable the function (Disable USB Error Detection).
With some motherboards you may need to install the newest version of the motherboard drivers and also may need to flash the BIOS.An example of this is VIA motherboards. The VIA or Apollo chipset boards require an update for their IRQ routing with windows. This update helps fix problems such as loss of data and such.
If you still cannot isolate USB to it’s own IRQ, changing the I/O range of USB sometimes works.
Possibly your last resort upgrading to USB by PCI/USB upgrade card is a recommended solution for systems with non-functioning onboard USB host controllers. Properly Installed the USB upgrade host controller should share the same IRQ as the onboard USB host controller. Check the motherboard manual or Manufacturers Web Site and install the new card into a PCI Slot that shares it's IRQ with USB. Do NOT disable USB in the BIOS as the upgrade card may not work if you do.
If that won't fix it, you may want to contact your mother board's manufacturer, or retailer who sold you the unoperable System components, to see if your System is under any kind of waranty/recall; then order a new motherboard and components...there is always the possibility you will  end up with same problem. Or you can contact a computer tech in your area. Goodluck...
    Misc Tips....
Check all Physical Connections (This includes: Motherboard mounting, cables, plugs, and visibly damaged components)...
Don't use cables longer than what you need, this can decreases efficiency and or causes System instability...
Check your Voltages in BIOS, and on your PSU (power supply unit); make sure your system is not underpowered...
Check your CPU/System Temperature, check airflow/fans, then check with your CPU manufacturer for acceptable settings...
Check BIOS, Drivers, Firmware, and Software for latest settings/updates...
Check Compatability (can find information in your Motherboard, BIOS, and Device Manuals...
Don't Overclock or Tweak settings you don't understand, unless you like the smell of toast...
And finally, don't me scared to ask... no one here will think less of you for seeking info/help from those who know...

Also if this has helped you or someone else in anyway please reply.

  • Safari 6.0.3 crashes on open in 10.7.5 (upgraded from 10.6.8)

    Folks,
I'm heading to the genius bar, but failing that they find a solution I'm posting this here as well.
I recently updated my 10.6.8 system to 10.7.5 via a standard USB upgrade stick from Apple. The update seemed successful... until I attempted to open Safari.
The system originally didn't update my version of Safari from 5.1.7, so I proceeded to follow the suggestion here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4148675?start=105&tstart=0
And Software Update did find a new update for Safari, downloaded and pushed me up to 6.0.3 but I'm still seeing a similar issue on instantiation of the app.
I'm getting the following crash report:

    Any thoughts?

Somehow, you've got part of Safari's frameworks for Mountain Lion calling for something that doesn't exist in Lion.
Sounds like you already downloaded/installed safari 6.0.3 for Lion via software update, and yet it didn't alter that.
You could try removing /System/Library/StagedFrameworks/Safari/ before running the install again, or 'force' the update using Pacifist...  but for ease, if not time too (since there might be other wrong files), I'd suggest you boot into Recovery & reinstall the OS, then run software update (after backing up, of course).

  • 50L7300 upgrade doesn't work

WOW! I went through 24 pages here and couldn't believe how many different problems were described and hardly any resolution was offered by Toshiba.  I bought this brand and model because others didn't have wired network connection and VGA input that I needed.  I was pretty happy with it, until I heard a buzz at certain voice frequencies during a talk show or documentary.  Although part of the problem was a cable on the back panel touching the TV housing, something in the TV still resonates sometimes.  This is clearly a sound problem, the tech wanted to replace the motherboard. After removing the motherboard he found that Toshiba sent him a different board so he put the original board back.  I bought the TV last November, the warranty expired and now "an upgrade is available” message comes up every time I turn the TV on.  You can select yes or no if you want to do the upgrade.  Needless to say the "upgrade" doesn't work, it downloads the files 100%, starts the "upgrade", blue screen, upgrade in progress, 1%, green light blinks and then nothing happens, the TV is back where it  was before, never completes the supposed "upgrade", no message to that effect. Toshiba can't find a resolution, the Help desk in Manila have no idea, they tell you to leave the TV on for hours during the "upgrade" and they will call you the next day to see if it completed...  You guessed it, he didn't call back and when I called again "JR" said he would tell the supervisor and he would call me back in 20 minutes... Two days later he called back but he had no idea what the solution was. They also gave me the phone numbers of two Toshiba authorized service agents, Video Doctor and Precision TV. When I called the former the tech said that you have to replace the motherboard that costs around $300. The latter would come out and charge $105 just to run diagnostics or $39.99 for a call… Toshiba’s suggested manual USB upgrade didn’t work either and second level support (supervisor) asked me what brand I used and try another brand of USB drive as part of the process of elimination before he can escalate it to the factory engineers..,. I guess their idea of support and problem solving is not the process of elimination but the elimination of process until the customer gets tired and goes away… I will never buy a Toshiba product again, I will stick to the best: Sony, Panasonic or LG…

I totally sympathize with you! I had a very similar experience like a year ago with version 7.whocanremember. I was an idiot and I deleted itunes and had a **** of a time trying to get it reloaded. I had tried to downgrade with zero luck. I don't think you will be able to. When you install that new version you see that little window pops up that says updating library. Have you tried just reinstalling 7.6? That is what I am going to try. I've got an interesting problem that I will probably be posting if a reinstall doesn't fix it. Good luck to you!!

  • USB alert

As I begin to sync music into my Nano I am alerted that my USB connection is 1.0 and I should connect to a USB 2.0 port to improve performance (speed). If theUSB ports on my computer are 1.0 port is it possible to upgrade to 2.0?

Just go to your local computer hardware store and ask for a USB upgrade
    Won't do any good.

  • How can I get rid of annoying "Unnamed USB device" messege??

Whenever I boot into OS9.2.2 on my other drive in my dual 500Mhz. G4 I get a usb upgrade messege window:
"Software needed for the USB device "Unnamed device" is not available. Would you like to look for the software on the internet?"
This appears everytime I boot, restart, startup on this drive. I've looked for this "unnamed device" in various places like the extensions folder to delete it but I can't find it anywhere. All of my usb devices are functioning and have been named including my MIDI controller. It would be great if I could get rid of this annoying reminder.......how can I get rid of this???
500mhz. Dual processor (revision B) dual boot   Mac OS 9.2.x   1.25gig RAM

I think it's my midi controller. I unplugged iton startup and I didn't get the messege. I've got the right driver installed for it and it's working fine so I don't know why I keep getting the messege. It's annoying to have to answer the question everytime time I startup.

  • How can I register my daughter's Macbook under my name?

We have three machines, a 21 inch IMAC, a 27 inch IMAC and a Macbook Pro. The two IMACS are registered under my Apple ID, along with two ipods. The Macbook Pro is not showing up. We can't remember if we registered at setup.
    1. How can you tell if a machine is registered by looking at the OS?
    2. If it was registered under HER name, how can I change it?
The reason I ask is because I want to upgrade all three machines to Lion, and I obviously only want to pay once (for the USB - download option too slow) on an understanding the USB upgrade is good for three licences provided they are all under the same name?
    Cheers.

    1. How can you tell if a machine is registered by looking at the OS?
You can't; there is nothing recorded on your system that has anything to do with product registration.
    2. If it was registered under HER name, how can I change it?
You can't, and you don't need to. The only time that you would need to change registration information is if you have an active AppleCare warranty, or you purchased a previously owned product from an authorized reseller. Otherwise, Apple doesn't care.
If you want to see if and how any of your Macs are registered, you can go to http://register.apple.com and enter the information asked for, and that will show you what products you have registered under your AppleID, and when.
As long as all those Macs are in your home, and your daughter lives there (or you bought it for her), Apple really doesn't care whose name it's registered under; they're all in your immediate family at your home.

Since the update a day or two ago my razer kraken 7.1 headset fails to connect to my ps4. they work fine on my computer, and my ps4s usb ports work fine for everything else. the do not light up, my ps4 doesnt say headset connected, and they dont work.

They were meant to stop working after firmware 2.00... as their is no Volume amp on the USB headset... The USB IDENT they use is a MONO USB headset chipset. so the headset volume was meant to be non Existant under the USB upgrade that loaded drivers based on USB Chip ident codes... So if they were working after 2.00 your lucky...

  • Can anyone recommend a good KVM switch for a PC/Mac pair?

I want to run my Mac and PC off of the same USB keyboard and mouse and use the same monitor. Naturally, to fix this problem I bought the first KVM switch I could find (how different could they be?) which was a Belkin variety. Worked ok right at first, but by day 2 I was having switching issues - the monitor kept switching between the two endlessly, though the USB seemed to switch ok. The Mac refused to sleep, though. I'm taking the Belkin switch back and trying something new.
Has anyone had any success with a KVM switch? If so, what flavor?
    Thanks.

Personally I love my IOGEAR USB KVMP.
I own 2, both of them are 2 port units
Best part of IOGEAR is they come with all cables & power supply.
Worst part is most models dont have Audio support, so every machine needs their own speakers.
The IOGEAR USB KVMP Miniview #GCS102U http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS102U that I own has ports in front for USB keyboard & USB mouse, in back are 2 USB (A/B) ports with 2 male 15pin VGA ports to connect the 2 computers, also the main monitor port has female 15pin VGA port to connect the Monitor. Cool part is you can use a DVI-VGA adapter without problems which is nice if you LCD or CRT monitor.
2 other USB ports on the back let you share other devices like Printer and Scanner. I am able share my keyboard, trackball, monitor and printer with my newer MDD Dual G4 and an Intel Celeron 2GHz PC I have that runs Linux.
My other KVMP drives 2 other older Macs, a BWG3 and a USB upgraded PM7600.
The front has a button that you push there is less than 2 second delay for monitor and no software needed.
The USB ports are all USB1.1 if I recall so the style is fairly universal if out of date.
they also have a 4port version which I might get http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS634U
Although I have not used one, http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=255941 I love the look of the new Belkin Flip. Apple sells them on the AppleStore for $80 and are touted for PC & Mac mini, although I dont see why i cant be used for any Mac. Its cool feature is it does offer Audio Support too and far as I know it has its cables too. I think it is USB2.0 since its a new product. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6314001/wo/0I7xL JNdSeJb3Do7Faa1XvHguGA/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3
    good luck.
