USB v FW ??   (Home Server HDD & network speeds)

hi guys,
i have a mac mini with two HDD's as my home server/media centre. both hdds are WD My Book 1TB's (USB). i have just purchased but not picked up
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=580
in regards to USB vs Firewire i am just wondering:
if the mac mini is sharing the data from a USB drive to both ethernet and wireless clients, will i notice a difference in write & read speeds using FW instead?
Currently I am sharing movies/tv recordings via ethernet to my ps3/360, and regular files (wirelessly) to my iMac and MacBook.
If you guys could give me some feedback, because if there is an outstanding difference I'll cancel it and order a 1tb with FireWire instead.
Cheers

will i notice a difference in write & read speeds using FW instead?
No. Throughput will be limited by Ethernet, even Gigabit Ethernet; wirelessly, more so.
The main benefit of a FireWire drive is the ability to boot from it. You can't do that with USB.

  • Windows 8.1 Photos app doesn't display photos from Home Server V1 network drive

I have my photos stored on a Home Server V1 network drive (\\homeserver\photos) and I have added the drive to the Pictures library. When I open the library in desktop Explorer I can see all the photos
and my Photos live tile shows photos from the network drive. When I open the Photos app I can see all the folders. However, when I open a folder I get the message 'There are no files or folders in this view.'
    Any help is appreciated.
I am running Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.

Adding another voice to this - I hit exactly the same issue myself yesterday.  I haven't got the device with me now, but as the original poster says:
I have \\server\photos mapped to my p:\ drive in Windows 8.1, and this is in my pictures library.
The p:\ drive has many (100s) subfolders, which I can browse using Windows explorer and desktop apps like Picasa.
When I start the "photos" app, I see all my folders (each with a thumbnail picture), but when I click into a folder I just get the "There are no files or folders in this view".
It's probably worth saying that as this is Home Server v1, I had a bit of fun and games to get permissions right to access the share:
I log into Windows 8.1 (on a Surface Pro 3) using my Microsoft account
I've mapped the home server photo drive to "P:\" on my SP3; when I did this I provided the admin user ID and password for the home server and told windows to remember the credentials.
I added p:\ to my pictures library in Windows 8.1 on the SP3.
FWIW - I use a similar mechanism to add music from my home server to my music library, but the XBox Music app seems to be able to see individual tracks OK.
    Any ideas?

  • Opinions on G3 450mHz B&W as home server or network backup system

    Hi all,
I just got a G3 450mHz Blue and White Server and am using it as a jukebox right now but was thinking of also using it as a backup machine for my other macs. So my question is am I better just getting an ethernet switch and using file sharing to make it a back up machine or should I use it as a home server. If I use it as a home server should I get any special kind of pci card? Also if anybody has a site they can recommend on how to do this please let me know. Sorry for all the questions.
    Roland

Does it still have the Server software loaded?
In schools, they use Mac OS X Server and set most student users up as Network users, and put their Home Directories on the Server instead of locally in /Users/<your_id>. This allows any user to log on to any school computer and get their files instantly, since they are actually stored on the server.
You can buy used CDs of an old version of Mac OS X Server for less than the US$1000. price of the current unlimited users version. It will support about 150 users doing File Sharing.
For a school, you add a Gigabit Ethernet card and Gigabit Switch. This makes file access on the Server nearly as fast as a Hard Drive.

  • USB vs. FW External HDD Transfer Speeds

I recently (yesterday) bought an Iomega minimax 250GB external HDD to go with my imac. I know that this is desined for the mac mini however I liked the USB/FW hub capability and the small footprint.
The main purpose was to clone my 160GB internal HDD and use the remainding space for DV capture and editing.
I have noticed that the transfer rate between the USB2 and FW conections is very different. I am getting approx 13MB/s from the USB2 and 30+ from the FW and was wanting to know why the USB2 was so slow. The HDD is connected directly to the back of the imac and the only other USB2 device conected is the keyboard.
I know the simplest answer is to forget the USB2 connection however to ustalise the USB and FW hub capability I need to have both connected and the system does not seem to allow me to set 1 as priority over the other and the USB2 is the default.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    iMac G5 17 2.0GZ   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I was not aware that you could prioritize the usb/fw
connection. I just assumed that fw was the default
when both cables were connected. How do you
prioritive the connections? I am not sure what the
value of a hub is because both usb and fw devices can
be daisy chained. I have a combo ext. HD with a usb
hub but I only use the FW port. Keeping the usb
connection also takes up a port on my IMac.
Sorry been away for a bit. There is an Auto/1394a swith on the back to switch between the Firewire and auto. Has made a significant diff setting to FW over the USB2.0.

  • AppleTV syncing seriously compromising home wi-fi network speeds (sort of)

    Hey there Crew -
I have an AppleTV linked to the iTunes on a new Mac mini (with 802.11n wireless). All the syncing and internetting is being done through a just purchased Time Capsule (with the Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n; my understanding of this is that computers with standard 'n' wireless run at 'n' speeds, while those with 'g' or lower run at those speeds without compromising the 'n' network).
OK SO: My problem is that older computers on my network (with 802.11g wireless) lose almost all their internet connection (down to 1 or 0 bars) when the AppleTV is doing it's sync with the Mac mini. When no syncing is going on, the computer (specifically an old Powerbook G4 that my wife uses) has great signal strength and fast down speeds. As soon as the sync starts, however, that computer takes a nose dive. All other computers with 802.11n wireless don't experience a slowdown.
Has anybody seen this behavior before? Obviously it is a manageable problem; I can just avoid syncing the AppleTV when my wife needs to be on the internet; but it's one of those nuisances that gets under the old skin, you know? My guess is that when the network gets taken over by all the media syncing, it squeezes out the 802.11g connections, but was hoping someone could either confirm that or offer another theory.
    Thanks folks!
    Matthew

  • Server's network drive crashes Finder.

    Hi all,
Im having a problem where intermittently, trying to open a folder on a home server's networked (AFP) drive is crashing Finder and forcing me to do a hard reboot.  force quitting finder DOES NOT fix it.  I click on the server on the lefthand side in finder, and then on a folder ON the server, and it hangs and gives me the pinwheel.

  • Elements 11 can't see my home server (network drive)

I just installed Elements 11 on a new computer.  When I try to import photos, the program cannot see my home server, which is where all the photo files are.  It is seeing that I'm on a network because all the other computers on my home network are visible.  Just not the server.  I can see the server without a problem when I go into File Explorer.  It is open and I can open files on it with no problem, but still Elements isn't seeing it.  When I try to Map a Network Drive, it just creates some bogus additional drive rather than going to the actual drive.
I have Elements 10 on another computer and have been able to access the drive without a problem there.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks.

  • All 30 minutes my Macs (iMac/Snow Leopard, MacMini/Lion) are loosing the connection to the Windows Servers (2 Networks: Home with Home Server 2011 (Server 2008) and Office with Home Server V1 (Server 2003)).

    Hallo,
    Hello,
I run the office and at home each a Microsoft Home Server. In both networks, in addition to various Windows computers, a Mac is available.
The particular "configuration" is as follows:
    - Apple MacMini (Late 2011, as HTPC) with Lion via wifi via AVM Fritzbox 7390 to Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (Windows Server 2008).
    - Apple iMac (Late 2010, desktop PC) with Snow Leopard by Lan on AVM Fritzbox 7270 on Microsoft Windows Home Server V1 (Windows Server 2003)
All operating systems on current conditions with all patches and updates.
The Fritz boxes running with the latest firmware
    Now to the problem:
Both Macs are loosing every 30 minutes the contact to the server. The connection is "re-"established about 1-2 minutes later. On MacMini (HTPC), the film or music is stopped for the above period. Thereafter, the film / music goes on. With the iMac (workstation) a document loaded from the server can no longer be saved or printed.
The MacMini has shown this phenomenon directly in connection with the WHS. However, the iMac has been working about 1.5 years with no problems. This problem only occurs for about 6-9 months
Because of different WHS and OS X versions are affected and also different Fritz boxes are used and it seems to be a general problem in the interplay Windows / OS X to be present.
When the iMac is the exact date of disconnection does not occur.
With the Mac Mini, the time can however be determined relatively easily. From the Event Viewer on Windows Server is unfortunately no clear error image. At the particular time but appeared relatively often, but not always (!) In Windows Security Logs the error 4625 (Failed to log on an account) on. This would indicate a rights issue.
Searching for a solution (so far unsuccessfully, unfortunately), I stumbled over the problem of the Server Infrastructure License Services (silsvc) in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (every 30 min!). Maybe a connection?

Hi, and thank you for your reply!
My reason for not posting this in the server forum is that I suspect it is a clien issue. All my other clients connect happily to the server which leads me to believe the server is configured correctly.
Only my the two MacBook Pro's are having problems.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 & Network speed

Today my server went slow. I've expreienced, that the network speed is very slow, and the average speed is around 200-500mpbs which is fine. Anyways from outside, the server is annoying slow, and speedtest.net shows quite good speed.
The game server is slow, website is slow, remote desktop connection, and the whole server is just slow, even the CPU usage is 0%, and RAM is around 9%
    Specs: x4 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5355 @ 2.66GHz OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 32GB DDR3 RAM
I'm running an MMORPG server on it. And I've never experienced such thing. I'm working with Windows Servers since 3 years.
I'm clueless now, and I don't know what's causing this annoying network issue. Do you have any ideas how to solve it?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I don't think if there's any problem with my disk.
The whole system went slow, for example, now, my site takes around 30 secs to load, and before when I had no problems, it took max. 1 second.
    Try out: http://4story.hitlan.net/index.php
Remote desktop, and the whole gameserver running on it are also slow. But there's 0% CPU usage:
    http://i.imgur.com/ITzYGW7.png
The disk is also okay: http://i.imgur.com/jqyM5OR.png
If I ping the server, the average answer time is 62ms which is not the best, considering, that the server is located far away from me, it's OK.
I've asked the sponsor of my game server, and they says they doesn't see any problem.
And the most weird thing, that if I do a speedtest, it shows me around 200-400mpbs download speed, and the same upload speed.
I can't understand it how could it happen. Before everything was fast, and yesterday everything became slow. And not for only me, for everyone.
I really don't understand how it could happen, everything was fast, before, now everything went slow.

  • USB vs Firewire Ethernet adaptor and impact on network speeds

So my wife is going to be taking some online classes and wants to backup the wireless by connecting to our router via ethernet given that we've had some issues with our cordless phone interuppting our wireless signal. She's concerned about network speed since classes involve streaming video and being connected via webcam. I know Firewire is faster for transfering information in general...say to an external hard drive...does the same go for internet speed? Will internet speed be slowed should she opt for a USB ethernet adaptor versus Firewire?

The transfer speed will be governed by the slowest link in the chain.  Fire wire theoretically is twice as fast as USB 2.
    Ciao.

  • LR photos, network storage and Windows Home Server photo sharing?

I'm trying to integrate my photos, now on a local desktop hard drive into my new Window Home Server network and Lightroom.
I've read up on network storage and LR.  I do have a question about photo sharing through Windows Home Server.  WHS has a Photos folder for sharing photos over the network.  I'm assuming that I should store LR related photos in another folder (I know about the catalog having to be on the local computer where LR resides) and then copy photos to be shared to the Photos folder?
I'm also wondering about the utility of having LR photos on the network storage and only accessing them through the local computer vs having photos on the local computer and having copies on the network.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone about how they have organized LR, WHS and network storage.

    See this FAQ:

  • Windows Home Server and Apple TV 2

There are some old threads talking about Windows Home Server and the original Apple TV - the HP Windows Home Servers actually have excellent Mac support and out of the box with the Twonky Media Server that is bundled with the HP WIndows Home Servers would stream to the original Apple TV with no issue.
The wrinkle is the Apple TV 2 requires Home Sharing. I'm not going to debate good/bad - it is what it is. I was searching for a way to get my WHS working with my Apple TV 2 since I'm finally getting around to automating the transcoding of my Tivo files and I would much rather my WHS be my media server than my Mac. I came across this article that seems perfectly reasonable:
    http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/topic/16359-whs-and-apple-tv-v2/
I haven't tried it yet, but it seems perfectly reasonable. Has anyone else tried it? I'll report back either way - if I remember to

"But can it be both simultaneously?
Both a server and a media machine that is showing a movie on your TV?"
    Yes it can, no problems.
The Mini Server OSX is pretty much the same as the client Snow Leopard, complete with Front Row, iTunes, Mail, Safari etc, but no iLife09 supplied - you will have to pay extra for that.
It will do everything that Snow Leopard will do but has all the server capabilities too if you know how to set it up/use the software.
The only things I had trouble with was I can't find Migration Assistant and a strange quirk is that it won't share a USB connected printer across a network! No sign of printer sharing in System prefs but I guess you can do it via the Server config somewhere...
I just used CUPS to enable Bonjour printer sharing - works fine
I have been able to insatll everything I had on my previous CoreDuo Mini including Final Cut Express, iLife09, EyeTV, some bit torrent stuff - all works fine...
I really like the fact that I can plug two monitors in - I have the MiniDVI connected to a 50" plasma and 1080p Projector (using an HDMI splitter), the Mini Display port feeds a separate 20" widescreen monitor - when the plasma/PJ is switched off the main display automatically switches back to the 20" monitor
All in all this MiniServer is a great little HTPC - powerful and silent with 1TB of storage. The Server software is a bonus I haven't even looked at as yet

  • Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini?

    Hey guys and girls...
Can I install windows home server 2011 on a mac mini? If so how?

WHS is 64-bit. Genius are really not versed in Boot Camp or Windows, let alone anything not on the "approved" list of Windows versions.
Most of the problems are with burning ISO, or the SuperDrive. It should have seen the NTFS partition. Disk Utility is known to be trouble, burning it on your Mac Mine but iwth Windows 7....?
Seeing you have Windows 7, format the partition to NTFS 160GB you want and then exit and boot WHS installer.
Or run the install from Windows 7.
In past, WHS supported TimeMachine, streaming video, supported iTunes (that was broken/disabled it seems by Apple with 10.0), as well as even SuperDuper backups.
Main idea is to have some network attached drives.
    Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra2 Review
Newegg - HP StorageWorks X310 Windows Home Server
I have both a ISO and Burned it to a dvd useing windows 7 built in ISO burning software, Its a 64 bit copy (got from microsoft download website from my dads microsoft account).
It is enouth for the OS but it runs slowish on the mac mini (latest core 2 duo 2.4ghz model) The Idea was to have it backup my pc and laptop to a usb drive and act as a media centre pc (connected to av receaver and tv and on a gigabit network with a 2TB nas)
Since it looks like this may not work, whats the best way to make it into a media centure? mac osx? windows 7? plex? whats best and good?
I'd avoid USB like the plague. Why not use your PC instead? If I was going to use a Mini for WHS, I'd just use the Mini solely for Windows and not have OS X (you can boot OS X off an external drive anyway).

  • Windows Home Server & WRT54G Problem - WHS

I am trying to set up my new Windows home server to work on my (otherwise working fine)home network. WHS is supposed to be super easy. Yes, and the MS tooth fairy...
Anyway, my WHS will not connect to the network or apparently even the WRT54G router. WHS has not yet connected to the internet either thru my broadband router. When I open up the Server Console on the server (other networked PC's can't see the server yet), go to settings to trouble shoot, I am getting a message that the router is not configured & no router IP address is found. I have my router set up for auto DHCP & pretty much everything else on default. Double checked the cables, they are fine. Somehow WHS will not connect to my WRT54G (V. 6, w/latest firmware update 1.025!)
Server console page gives error message at "Verifying that your router supports UPnP standards", "Verifying that your router is accepting web site connections" and Verifying that your router is accepting Remote Access connections". Yet, when I log into router at 192.168.1.1/Manage.htm it says UPnP is enabled. The rest of the networked computers work just fine. But apparently I have trouble between WHS and WRT54G. Is this a UPnP issue? If so, how resolve? MS's web site is really weak on WHS troubleshooting.
    ANY ADVISE?????

I think I know your problem: on your WHS machine, go start>right click "My computer">properties>hardware>device manager... I'm guessing you have a yellow question mark sign over your ethernet controller, and no listing for "Network adapters". If this is the case, then basically the WHS install didn't recognise you LAN, so it can't communicate with your network and hence isn't being assigned an IP by your DHCP router. To solve, open you computer, and read off the motherboard product id and manufacturer. Go to their website, find the downloads section, find your motherboard id (i'm assuming you're using the onboard LAN) and download the LAN driver. Move the files over to the desktop of your WHS with a USB key or something, extract and run the installer. Restart, and if we're onto the right thing, then voila! I hope this is it... -Dave

  • [SOLVED] Network speed very slow, no apparent reason

Hello, recently I switched from Windows 7 RC1 to Arch on my home machine (I have used Gentoo, Ubuntu, and Fedora 10 on the same machine in the past), and for some reason network speed is very slow.
I have Verizon's 20mbit/5mbit package, and I have always gotten that speed.
Using speedtest.net and 100mb.test from cachefly on multiple computers I have come to the conclusion that it is infact my Arch install that is causing the problem:
    - All other machines on my network are getting 20/5 (both wired and wireless)
    - I ran a speedtest from 2 other machines using the ethernet cable that this PC is on.  Again, full 20/5.
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from this PC -> other Arch box: ~2.8MB/s.
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from other Arch box -> this PC: ~2.8MB/s.
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from this PC -> UK VPS (100mbit line): ~539KB/s
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from UK VPS -> this PC: ~76KB/s
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from this PC -> Chicago Server (dual gbit lines): ~563KB/s
    - scp transfer of 100mb.test from Chicago Server -> this PC: ~91KB/s
    speedtest.net result:
Upload speed seems to be unaffected.
I have tried disabling TCP window scaling, and appending my hostname to /etc/hosts.
What is weird though is that the other Arch box has an identical network config,  I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work.
My NIC is an integrated Realtek something, I can get the exact model if needed.

    Hi, whipsch
Can you try ethtool to see if your ethernet card is actually negociating and using a 100Mb full duplex link on your LAN ? If not you can try to force the link parameter with ethtool. Also maybe the driver of your NIc has options related to link negociation.
    Hope this helps,
