USB vs Bluetooth Power Consumption?

I think I already know the answer to this, but I'd like verification (or clarification).
I've one portable 'headset' (i.e. full DSP headphones with microphone) that is USB which I use for video iChat MAINLY when I'm plugged in: however I have and do need to use it in battery mode, at times, when traveling but it does seem to consume battery power (sound is good, though).
I've also a set of standard (battery powered, noise canceling) headphones that I use when traveling to listen to music, watch a DVD whilst flying, etc. They don't SEEM to drain much if any battery power.
I THINK I would like to get a Bluetooth 'earset' so that I can use video iChat without the USB headset draining the battery...
...my assumption being (which I'm looking to be verified or shot down) that Bluetooth devices consume little (to no?) battery power?
Smart folks - comments, please?

I am looking into buying an external mouse, but I am trying to decide between the wired or wireless Apple Mighty Mouse. Which do you think would drain the battery quicker on my MacBook Pro? Also, I have read some reviews on the Apple Mighty Mouse and many have claimed to be disappointed by the hindered use of the scroll ball, supposedly getting too dirty or something. Is this something I should consider?
Thanks in advance for the response, I'm a switcher who is very new to all this.

  • Power consumption standby and turned off

    Hi there,
I tested the power consumption of my new Mac Pro with a watt meter while in standby mode and while turned off. In both tests I got nearly the same figures -around 35 watt.
Do you have these too or do I have a problem?
    Thanks guys,
    Mclane

In sleep my watt meter is reporting 3 watts.
If I have allow bluetooth device to wake up computer enabled in the bluetooth settings I the watt meter reports 5 watts during sleep.
    Not seeing anything when shutdown.
I have not got any usb or firewire devices connected.
Do you have any usb or firewire devices connected ?
According the the apple dev docs the Mac Pro provides power to the firewire ports during sleep and will also provide firewire power when shutdown if firewire devices were already connected.

  • 3000 J converted to NAS, Are there fan control settings/ways to reduce power consumption?

So I've had this old 3000 J series - (J115 7388) that's been sitting doing nothing for a while, so I decided to convert it into a FreeNAS, I've stripped out the DVD, card readers, anything unneccesary to reduce power usage - on that theme I have a few questions...
    1. Is there a setting in the BIOS to automate the fans as & when needed to make the system quieter & to reduce power consumption - there will be 2x 2tb WD green drives in there with an idle time of 5 mins, atm I'm using one 320GB HDD from an old laptop - the system won't be used 90% of the time & I'd like it to be able to react when needed rather than constantly be on
the specs http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-67129 say the fan is variable, but I can't see anything obvious in the BIOS, it did take me some time to find the boot order, so maybe I'm overlooking something
So that's my main question & this is the bonus
    2. I know there's an Nvidia C51G chipset in there somewhere, is it possible to remove this, there's no GUI on the pc anymore, so again, & also anything else like sound, just to make it as efficient as possible & not to have any unessesary components using power
I have downloaded updated the latest BIOS (circa 2007) onto another pc from http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001014 - even if it does provide an update to what I already have - I did note 2007 already on the BIOS version, of course I can't run it to try to make a bootable usb as the downloaded exe is for XP
I'm having a little trouble with the Lenovo site UI, not sure if it's coding - the links to guides/docs/drivers/downloads on http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?selector=expand just don't seem to be working for me

Are you sure there are no trojans or viruses on laptop? Also lounch the task manager and check out the service or application with deranged CPU loading while the laptop is in the idle mode. What is the power usage in the idle mode?

  • 2011 MacBook Pro hard drive power consumption

Does anyone know the differences in power consumption between the Apple-supplied 750GB 5400rpm HDD, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, and 256GB SSD drives?  I'm currently using a 2011 MacBook Pro with an Apple-supplied 256GB SSD and I'm getting between 5-8 hours of battery life, depending on what I'm doing.  I wish it could get closer to a full 10-hour battery life for longer trips, but I realize there's a price for performance.  What's the best hard drive option to minimize power consumption?  Are there any other tips for increasing battery life?  Does it make a difference if you turn off Bluetooth and WiFi when you know you're not going to be able to use them?  Thank you in advance for your reply.

Yes, turn Wi-Fi and BT off when not needed. That and your screen are the biggest power consumers. Keep the brightness as low as you can to conserve power.

  • Nokia N86 power consumption

I have a Nokia N86 which is 2 years old.
I have been experiencing a problem with battery drainage since I bought it. The battery meter suddenly drops from 5 bars to one bar when I browse the net using HSDPA, after about 30mins or so, when the phone is already hot. I sent it into service once, because it happened very randomly and it did not look like a major issue. They said they recalibrated the battery. After a week of somehow uniform battery draining, the battery started going flat suddenly, again, from 5-6 bars to "low battery".
I went to a service center again to check if it's the battery or the phone. Nokia Energy Profiler says that the current is about 400-500mA when using HSDPA. The engineer at the service center connected a power supply with measurable current consumption, and during the usage of HSDPA, the current was at least 800mA, with almost 1000mA peaks. He said that these current intensities damage the battery in about a month and that he would not recommend changing the battery, but the HSDPA chip. The warranty period expired a month ago.
I am asking you guys:are these values normal? 800-1000mA during HSDPA usage for a Nokia N86? I need a serious, valid opinion from somebody who really knows mobile hardware. Thank you.

This has happened to me every now and then. First it seems as if the battery is almost full and then it's suddenly empty even without using the device much.
Sometimes the device feels warm. In those cases I just reboot it.
Obvious things to check would be that BlueTooth and WLAN are off if you don't need them.
Sometimes the switch of the kickstand has activated when I have carelessly thrown the phone on a bed for example. If you have defined it to start an application that could cause some power consumption.
I haven't tried to measure my power consumption. I guess there are two options:
    - the device actually consumes a lot of power sometimes
    - the battery indicator isn't always up-to-date i.e. it shows several bars when the battery is actually almost empty.
It's a shame because it's a pretty nice phone and I quite like it. Luckily it's quite a rare problem.
(But not that great if the battery dies during a bicycle trip just because I have SportsTracker running.)

  • Power consumption double compared to windows... where could energy be

I just bought a new Laptop (Acer Aspire 5755g), and first thing after I got it was, of course, installing arch ;-)
However, I noticed that the energy consumption under Linux is at least about 22 Watts in idle mode, while it uses only 10 Watts on the preinstalled Windows 7. I was wondering where the big power leak could be. That's what I already thought of:
    • I enabled most of the laptop-mode energy saving options, that means ondemand CPU governor, soundcard/ethernet/wireless powersavings, usb autosuspend, hard drive power saving etc...
    • Since it is a nvidia optimus laptop, it has two graphics cards. However, I disabled the nvidia graphics card in the BIOS (what saved about 5 Watts), and I think the remaining "cheap" intel chip should not use that much power.
    • The laptop has an LCD LED display that can be quite bright. However, the 22 Watts are measured when background light is almost at the minimum.
Are there any ideas, where else the problem could be?
I know of the kernel power regression discussed on phoronix recently, but can this really double the power consumption?

Indeed, this and the pcie_aspm option, plus disabling the NVidia card with power management from Bumblebee (extra dangerous BTW, I would not recomend, though I use it) and unloading some modules, took my Alienware M11xR3 consumption down to 7.95W.

  • Quad G5: Actual Power Consumption

I haven't seen the numbers posted, so I thought I'd share from this config:
Quad 2.5 Ghz G5 (Rev A, dual pumps)
    4.5 GB PC2-4200 RAM (4 x 1 GB, 2 x 256 MB)
    Geforce 6600
Western Digital 250 GB SATA Drive (WD2500JS)
Seagate 400 GB SATA Drive (ST3400832AS)
No firewire or USB devices connected (except keyboard, mouse)
Here was the measured power consumption (in watts):
455 Peak measured (with 4 CPU's at 100%, disks writing)
    275 Idle (CPU at Highest)
245 Watching a DVD (CPU at Automatic)
    210 Idle (CPU at Reduced)
    43 Mac Sleeping
The specs page lists "At least 10A" required at 120 volts. Even if you squeezed 9 drives into the G5, I don't see how one would ever approach 1200 watts.
I use a Belkin 1500VA (830 watts) UPS, which is 55% loaded when the Quad is at its peak, and can sustain that for around 10 minutes.
At 7 cents per kWh, running BOINC could cost 77 cents per day, running idle would be 36 cents, and sleeping 8 cents.

I posted similar results a few months ago. Amazing that people were worried (when the Quads first appeared) that they'd have to run new power lines to support them.
I used a 'Kill A Watt' to measure - what did you use?

  • 5800XM Bluetooth power bug ?

I've been experiencing poor battery life on my Nokia 5800 XM recently. Sometimes on a full charge I could only get a day to a day and a half of standby time with minimal usage (2-3 texts, no calls and 5 photographs). I put this down to an old battery and ordered a new one.
In the meantime we went to my parents-in-law and the battery lasted 5 days on a full charge including a reasonable amount of web browsing via WLAN.
Got back home and the battery died a couple of days later despite being fully charged.
Put in a brand new battery, charged it up and used the phone - 2.5 days later it was dead (minimal texts and a couple of photos). Charged it again - 2 days standby before dead.
Downloaded the power profile app - everything seemed to be fine. The phone idled nicely on standby with minimal power drain.
Then I used the bluetooth and everything became clear. After connecting to OVI for a minute or two, downloading my photos then closing OVI and disabling the bluetooth on the phone, I noticed my power consumption didn't go back down. I was getting regular peaks of around 150ma and the battery life was considerably reduced.
If I left the bluetooth disabled and power cycled the phone, it would settle down to minimal usage. The moment bluetooth was enabled, the problem reocurred.
I then backed the phone up, totally wiped the sd card and reinstalled from scratch.
Exactly the same problem - fine until BT enabled then even when disabled, the phone started drawing excess current on idle.
I've done a search on this problem and come up with very little.
    Any other ideas ?

  • Tethering impact on battery with USB vs Bluetooth

Assuming an on-the-go scenario with the MBA and an iPhone4, if I want to use tethering which one would be more battery friendly for the MBA: USB or Bluetooth tethering?
My instinct tells me BT, since the MBA would not be trying to charge the iPhone with the USB cable. But not sure how much power the BT radio uses.
    Thoughts?

    Hi
Interesting question. I had considered using tethering with my iphone, however in the end I opted for the USB dongle option instead. My main thinking was twofold:
    1) I didn't want to have to be reliant on my iphone being fully charged. Although it rarely happens, I do get caught out sometimes (e.g. when travelling and forgetting the charger cable). With a USB dongle, you don't have to worry about that.
    2) I deliberately selected a USB dongle on a different network to that of my Iphone. If I can't get a good signal on one network, there is a chance I might be fine on the other.
The other thing to consider is the impact on your iphone battery with tethering. I would imagine the simultaneous data transfer and bluetooth operation would impact the battery charge quite a bit. Has anyone got any experience of this?

  • IMac G4/700 Power consumption

New question on an old but reliable machine:
Lately my UPS has given an "overload" signal several times. It is supposed to handle 350 VA/200W.
I searched through this forum and could not find a thread indicating where to find the rated power consumption of my iMac G4/700.
Since this problem only started occurring recently I suspect my UPS battery is bad but I thought I would try to research all possibilities. Thanks for any help.

When shopping for a replacement battery for the UPS, also consider
the newer technologies in the higher model line of UPS products that
have an 'automatic voltage regulation' feature. This will help keep the
attached computer healthy and protect it from both Up & Down action
on the grid. Also, some have a special USB-Ethernet data cable for
use with the uninterruptible power supply that Mac OS X can then use
to see and control the backup power configuration within System Prefs.
The UPS, beeping, may also mean that during the weather and holiday
seasonal loads on the grid, there are localized changes in the quality &
availability of electricity in your area. My newer APC brand UPS is OK
in that it shows the power specifications on an LED display on it, and
also allows me to set power settings in the Energy preference panel.
And it has a bigger battery, better technologies than my old failed one.
Sometimes warehouse stores have a fair price on these, since shipping
is generally high from elsewhere, due to the weight of the battery's lead.
    Good luck & happy computing!
