USB vs Firewire on intel iMac

a friend of mine is running his iTunes library on an external Firewire drive. He is using an intel iMac - not the absolute newest one, this one may be a year or so old.
question: I was thinking of getting him a bigger drive, and of course I noticed that firewire is more expensive than USB.
I know that on older computers (like my 2004 G5 PowerMac), USB is significantly slower than firewire.
Is that also the case with the intel iMacs?
Would firewire be noticeably faster than USB when running iTunes...
I just saw a hot deal on a USB 1 TB drive - $225... but if FW is really faster than USB, I will look for a FW drive for him!
thanks!
will

thanks to all of you!
In my experience, one needs all the speed one can get with iTunes and a large library (500 GB and up) so it sounds to me like it's worth the extra dough for a firewire drive, even for a FW 800.
Speaking of which, I noticed that the speed tests were for USB 2.0 vs FW 400 - I can only assume FW 800 is faster still, although, perhaps, not exactly twice as fast.
thanks again!

  • BOOTABLE Firewire on Intel iMac - my story, need answers...

Just got the new Intel iMac in today. Need to be able to boot from a Firewire drive. Connected FW drive, it shows up on desktop. Erased using Disk Utility (the version that came installed on the Intel iMac). Re-booted from the iMac system DVD. When it gets to the screen to choose which drive to install on, it won't allow me to install on the FW drive. When I click on the FW drive icon, I get this message:
"You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannot start up from this volume."
I've tried different drives, and different FW cases. It states in the manual that came with the iMac that one of the uses of the Firewire ports is to allow booting the iMac from an external hard drive. So, what's the trick? Does it require a certain type of FW case, or drive, or firmware, or formatting? I'll keep testing, but if anyone knows the answer, HELP! Thanks.
BTW, I haven't done much on the iMac yet, but the speed in just launching programs is AWESOME! Apps launched and on the screen in less that one bounce in the Dock!

Tallan - I've tried Mac OS Extended, Extended (Journaled), Extended (case-sensitive), and Extended (case-sensitive, Journaled). And I've tried all those with the OS 9 driver installation on and off.
I'm going to try doing a bootable back-up using Synchronize Pro, which is what I've used for a long time on previous Macs. But there should still be a way to do a clean install from the original DVD.
Glorfindeal - what "special boot partition" are you talking about? Where is it? How do you do it?
    Thanks for the feedback....

  • USB Audio Devices and Intel iMac

With the release of 10.4.10 and the subsequent Intel audio update to suppress the "popping" noise, Apple managed to break my output of audio through an external USB sound card (in my case a Yamaha DP-U50). The device is still recognized as an input device and works fine for that purpose -- output is simply not available.
What's more frustrating is that the device works fine with my PowerBook G4 (in both Tiger and Leopard), so it appears to be Intel specific.
From the forums then, the problem also appeared to affect many other's input devices as well.
It doesn't appear that anyone ever managed to find a fix for this issue in 10.4.10 and consequently, I'd been expecting Apple to simply fix the bug in Leopard.
Well...I installed Leopard 2 days ago and there's been no change. The device is still recognized as an output device by the G4 PowerBook and not by the Intel iMac.
If anyone has gotten such a device to work with either Leopard or 10.4.10, I'd really appreciate some troubleshooting tips.

I do have a Yamaha AP-U70 attached via USB to a PowerBook G4. It did work as audio input and output device in tiger (up to 10.4.11) but is now in leopard only visible as input device.
I would be very happy if someone finds a hack to reenable it.
    regards,
    André

  • Firewire 410 - Intel iMac - no output

    Hello,
Is there anyone out there with a 20" iMac having trouble with the M-Audio Firewire 410?
I am running Beta driver 1.7. I get no output from the Firewire 410. I see active channel lights and I can see the audio transition in the Firewrie control panel, but I get no output.
The 410 works fine on my PowerBook (same cables and hookups).
I also have a Firewire Solo that works fine on both machines (same cables and hookups).
    Just Curious.
    --R

Thought I would update the thread for anyone following this.
The deeper I got into it, the more I came to think it was my machine. I archived everything and did a fresh install of the OS (Tiger 10.4) from the install CDs. I loaded up the driver and low and behold, I got sound! I then updated everything to 10.4.5 and all is well. I have the machine pretty much back to where I had it and everything is working.

  • I have an old iMac and am thinking about getting an iMac intel do I need a different kind of usb and firewire cord?

I have an old iMac and am thinking of getting an iMac intel. Do I need a different type of usb and firewire cords to work with the new one?

What type of Firewire cable do you have?
If our not sure then first look up your computer with the serial number here,
    http://support.apple.com/specs/
Then take a look at the specs for the new iMac here and see if you have compatible cable,

  • Epson Stylus Photo R1800: successful Firewire install on Intel iMac?

Has anyone been able to succesfully install the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 on an Intel iMac using the Firewire connection?
After installing the Intel drivers from the Epson website, if I connect the printer via the USB cable the printer and associated driver show up in the Printer Setup Utility just fine. But if I connect the printer via the Firewire cable I just see a printer named "E" in the printer setup utility and no R1800 driver at all.
Epson support just keeps instructing me to uninstall and reinstall the driver.
I've hunted around in the discussions here and have noticed some people having trouble with this particular printer, but I've been unable to establish whether anyone has been succesful with the Intel iMac/Firewire combination.
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I am printing with a firewire connection. I have an intel iMac. Prior to buying the R1800, I checked out Epson's site for new intel printer drivers. A new update has been posted with an alert about the bundled software that comes with the R1800-don't install it! And if it was installed there's an uninstall walk through. The software did not come anywhere near my new imac. I downloaded the new software and I am printing with a firewire connection. I have one issue with the download. I can't print CDs because the application is on the original software cd. I contacted Epson and asked if I could install just the CD print software and not the printer driver. I will be waiting for an answer. I installed the software on a powerPC imac tiger. The printer is firewire connected and there are no printing problems, I can even print CD labels.
    I will post epson's response.

  • Attractive Firewire to USB 2.0 adapter for iMac?

I have a 20" intel iMac. It has 2 Firewire ports on the back that are going unused -- meanwhile I have too many USB 2.0 peripherals and I'm constantly swapping them out (printer, scanner, external hard drive, iPod, cybershot).
I've thought about getting a USB hub to extend the ports, but I really don't want an extra ugly device with a extra power cables and stuff.
Ideally, I'd like an attractive little device that fits right into one or both Firewire ports and converts them into USB 2.0 -- no extra cable, no separate powers supply, and preferably in iMac white.
    Does such a beast exist?

As Rich said, there are no Firewire to USB converters. However, you might consider this Belkin unit for aesthetics: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=199941
It stacks nicely with an Apple Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and it doesn't look bad next to your iMac. I bought one when I had a Mini and I had a nice looking Mini-AEBS-Belkin stack on my desk. Nowadays, I have it stacked below my AEBS next to my iMac and it looks great...

  • Intel iMac 20' users - any problems with noise on your firewire interfaces?

Someone please tell me that they have a quiet intel iMac 20'/Firewire interface set up, I'm having problems with a lot of digital noise from my Saffire LE & badly am hoping it's 'fixable' or just a faulty unit but more so, praying it's not noise from the iMacs Power supply that will interfere with any firewire interface I get???
I've read many posts about G5's suffering from noisy psu's which was one factor in my choosing an intel iMac & I chose the Saffire on it's great reviews for sound quality, there's no way I can work with the noise I'm getting & I'm pretty much panicking that if it IS the iMac & firewire thats the problem I'll be screwed as i only have 6 pin firewire as a useable option (really don't want to use usb2)
Incidentally, the 'budget' set up I had previously (PC & soundblaster audigy) didnt suffer from any noise like this (at least not that was even audible with the mixer levels at conversational level!) which i guess rules out any blame of this on 'mains hum/interference'?
The noise is there with the saffire's monitor output knob at any setting & with no inputs connected, it;s even worse if i power the saffire with it's external psu instead of off buss power. I'm not using a firewire hub & I've tried switching firewire leads & removing the firewire hard drive i have in the other port in case this was affecting it.
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone with similar troubles or even better anyone thats NOT having this problem with a 20' intel iMac & firewire interface so at least i know there's light (& quiet!) at the end of the tunnel

    Intel iMac 20'   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

funnily enough I'm going the other way, I have a rack of external modules/>sampler/fx etc & a crate of looms I've just unplugged as they've not been >turned on in so long!!!
    I hear you there!
The noise is there without any inputs at all to the interface, its defiantely >digital though, its like a toned version of the sound of an old telephone >modem.
What I mean, is try disconnecting everything, drives and all. You might even disconnect the interface and crank up the iMacs volume to see if it is there. If it is, you can try the UPS and see if that takes care of it. Then add them in one at a time. All it takes is one cheap power brick in the mix to cause all kinds of trouble (if your using powered monitors, that brick too). Noisy components can actually send noise back into the source power.
I know it can be really frustrating, especially if you have noise coming from more that one source. The key is to strip everything until it is quiet and then add them back in to see where the worst is. Then come up with a plan to try to get rid of the noise.

  • Dual Core Intel iMac 10.5.5 suddenly sees no firewire video decks

We have 7 iMacs used in a general area for students to digitize. This week NONE of them will see any sort of video deck or camera through the firewire port.
I did repair permissions, unplugged everything for 10 minutes (including power), zapped the pram. They do not see a DSR-11 or JVC BR-50 deck nor a DVX100, AG-DV60 camera.(this is in either iMovie or FCP 6.0.5 and yes, I tried replacing firewire cables)
I could see one having a problem, but 7 all at once? We are just back from break and did the 10.5.5 upgrade before we left fir Christmas. (We also did this to 18 G5 Intel power macs and they seem to be fine.)
Any thoughts here folks? This definitely seems to be in the software somewhere, either with quicktime or Leopard since neither iMovie or FCP will recognize anything.

Do you happen to have any other firewire devices on these iMacs? Even FW800? Although rarely mentioned, I have seen several Intel iMacs that would turn a deaf ear to DV devices when external drives were also attached simultaneously. Often removing the external drive(s) would resolve the issue, sometimes a reboot was also required.
I have heard that a firewire hub in series may help to resolve the issue, and that it may be related to a timing or power problem on the firewire controller chip in these iMacs. I had also read it may lie in the DV drivers, because someone who booted his iMac into XP had no issues capturing to Premiere or Vegas!
Since the FW 400 and 800 connectors are both driven from this same bus chip, I have to do camcorder captures to the internal drive, then copy them to FW800 raid once the camera is unplugged.
I have been very frustrated by this in the year I've had this iMac, since I bought it to run FCP. Doing video you always need more storage space, and this is quite a limitation... I haven't tried 10.4.x to see if that resolves it; if Snow Leopard corrects it I will be the first to buy it!

  • What usb keyboards are compatible with the Intel iMac

Please can someone tell me what USB Apple Keybouards are compatable with the intel Imac
    howard

Some PC keyboards may not work with the Mac. Especially, specialty gaming keyboards will not work with Macs and OS X.  Some PC keyboards are designed to specifically work with newer versions of Windows at that's it!
They may not even work as a basic keyboard, but not entirely sure.
I know for a fact specialty gaming keyboards do not work at all on a Mac because there have been posts here from gamers who tried to use special gaming keyboards and mice and they would not function on a Mac.
If you know anyone with a Mac, ask them if they have a spare Mac keyboard you can try before buying.
    Good Luck!

  • Firewire 800 connection down on an Intel iMac - software or hardware of cab

It appears that my Firewire connection from an intel imac 2GHz seems to be down. It is not showing up in the "More information" section in the in "About This Mac". Is this a software or hardware or cable issue?

    Reset PRAM and then OK

  • Why is my Intel iMac restarting randomly and USB keyboard not working randomly?

My intel iMac has been randomly rebooting itself without any error messages.  It also seems to coincide with the keyboard (USB) not working, but not always.  At first, it seemed to happen right after waking the computer from sleep, but now it happens when I am just sitting at the computer about once or twice a day.  For now, i have temporarily removed all external devices (except time capsule) and disabled any bluetooth or iTunes synch'ing over wifi.  I have also disabled all power management features.
I've tried different keyboards and resetting the SMC.  Could bad memory cause this?

Could be anything from a loose power cable, to loose or bad RAM module.
    1. Check all your power connections, including the mag connector on the back of the iMac.
    2.  Reinstall the RAM modules, as per > iMac: How to remove or install memory. When installing new or reinstalling RAM, be sure to push firmly on each module with both thumbs to insure that they are fully seated in the slots.
Then if it is still acting up...
    3. Run the > Extended Apple Hardware Test

  • Cannot boot my Intel iMac after installing Snow Leopard on an external USB

I have an Intel iMac with Snow Leopard installed. I have several FW and USB external drives. When I installed Snow Leopard from the Apple install disc on one of the USB drives to act as a backup the system rebooted and the Apple logo appeared and then the spinning gear wheel. After a while the logo was replaced by a circle with a line through it. I booted back into the install disc and tried Startup Disc from Utilities and selected Macintosh HD with the same result. Then I restored the system on my internal drive (Macintosh HD) from Time Machine. Still no luck. Does any one have any ideas before I reformat and reinstall from the SL installer disc?

Thanks for the replies. I was under the impression that Intel Macs can be booted with a USB drive
I just learned today that this is true from one of our Level 4's. PPC macs can't boot on USB drives and I thought that carried over to Intel, but I was wrong.
    Didn't mean to misinform you!
Ultimately, I reformatted my internal drive, reinstalled the OS and did a restore from my latest Time Machine backup with Migration Assistant. I didn't lose any data but the restore process took 3+ hours.
    Great! Glad you had success!
