USB vs Firewire results

I was recently given a 60 gb ipod that was not working, it would not power up so I plugged in with usb cable itunes says it is in recovery mode and needs to be restored and the battery will not recharge. I though since I have a pc that maybe it was mac formated so I swapped hard drives and it said the same thing. The next day I went to try again, but this time by accident I used the firewire cable and just like that it went straight to the ipod menu screen and I could see all the files, but still no charge on the battery.
I tried the usb cable again and once again itunes says its in recovery mode and must be restored.
What is happening? And what must I do?

  • Connecting via USB and FireWire at the same time...

    Hey all,
I have a 3rd Generation iPod (with the play/pause, menu, next track and previous track buttons between the screen and the touch wheel), and I just bought a new Nano.
Obviously, I want to keep them both synced with my MBP, but there's a problem. The 3G will sync via the Dock-to-USB cable, but it will only charge and sync with Dock-to-FireWire. The Nano, on the other hand, doesn't support FireWire.
So, in order to sync/charge them both, I have to use a different cable for each.
Or, do I? Apple sells a Dock-to-USB-AND-FireWire cable (one Dock Connector with two wires coming out). I'd love to plug both the USB and FireWire connectors to the MBP and then just plug the Dock connector into one iPod and then into the other. But, in the documentation for the cable, it says not to connect both the FireWire and USB ends to the computer at the same time, or it might result in "unexpected behavior."
Does anybody out there have any experience using this cable with both ends connected at the same time? Does it work? Have you noticed any "unexpected behavior?"
I wanted to check before I go defying Apple's instructions.
    Thanks,

  • 20" Cinema display with USB and firewire ports not working

I have a new 20" display and was wondering why my USB and fire wire ports at the back are not working. I have an external drive that is powered hooked up to the fire wire port and a no powered piano keyboard to a usb port.
    Any help please

Verify that the display’s USB and FireWire cables are firmly plugged in to the
computer. Do they show in your profiler?
Try different ports in the computer.
Verify that your computer ports are working with other known problem free device.

  • What is wrong with my 30" Cinema Display?  The USB and FireWire ports still work, but the screen is pitch black. When you plug it into the computer, it detects that it's a Cinema Display.

When you plug it into the computer, it detects that it's a Cinema HD but the screen is pitch black.
For some reason, the USB and FireWire ports still work.

If you shine a really bright light directly into the screen can you then see a faint image on the screen? If so, that would indicate the backlight has died (hardware failure) and the unit needs repairing.

  • Daisy Chain USB To FireWire?

    Hi all.
I'm not really sure where to post this, so any suggestions about a better place would be great. Anyway, here's my question.
I do a lot of work with photos, and they take up a lot of hard drive space, so what I'm planning to do is this: I'll buy a big external hard drive with lots of connections (1 USB, 2 FireWire 800, 1 FireWire 400). I'll also buy a smaller external hard drive with much less in the way of connections (1 USB only). The big drive will act as my main storage drive, with all the files for each image included on it. The smaller drive will act as the bakcup drive, with the top 20% or so of my best photos in only a compressed format on it. I want the smaller (backup) drive to be as cheap as possible, as I don't have much of a budget at all. Here are the two drive selections I've made: big drive:
    LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ Triple
    Small drive:
    WD Elements
    Desktop
So, here's the question: I know that you can daisy chain FireWire drives that have more than one port together, like this:
A cable from FireWire port on Drive A to FireWire port on Drive B, then a cable from another FireWire port on Drive B to the FireWire port on computer. I know this works (right?).
But I don't want to have to spend more money on Drive A (the backup drive) so that it has a FireWire port. Since Drive B (the main drive) has a USB port, I thought I would run a USB cable from Drive A to Drive B like this:
*Setup 1*:A cable from the USB port on Drive A to the USB port on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on the computer.
Will setup 2 work? Will the data from Drive A make the crossover from USB to FireWire? If not, I suppose I could also use this setup:
*Setup 2:* A cable from the USB port on Drive A to one of the FireWire 800 ports on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on my computer. Will this work better? Do USB to FireWire 800 adapters really work?
So, basically, all I really need to know is whether or not Setup 1 will work, and if it doesn't, whether or not Setup 2 will. Also, if anyone has any info/reviews/stories about the two drives I've selected, I'd love to hear that as well.
Thanks so much in advance for any help I get. Sorry about the long post; I hope it made sense.
    Thanks again.
    Nate

What about Setup 2, though? Does someone sell a USB to FireWire Converter?
Nobody has heard of a USB to FireWire converter that works.
The first example you gave would require a USB B to USB B cable or perhaps a "gender bender". Both of the drives you're looking at seem to still use the original full-sized USB B port, while many have gone to the mini-B. It wouldn't work anyways since both are USB slave devices. USB was never designed to daisy-chain.
Why can't you just connect the USB-only device to the USB port. If you're strapped for ports, then maybe a USB hub. You wouldn't even need a powered hub if you have a few low-powered devices and this external drive which doesn't use bus power.

  • S-Video to USB or Firewire Converter

I'd like to use the S-Video output on my VCR to input into my Mac via either USB or Firewire. Is there an affordable (less than $50) converter that can do this job? I can use either iMovie or Final Cut.

Unfortunately there is no under $50 converter that will do what you want unless you can find a 'deal' on eBay or Craigslist.
The Canopus ADVC-55 will do the job and is about the least expensive converter available, but it goes for $200. AND, if you were to consider that expense I'd really suggest the ADVC-110 instead - at the same price it gives you bi-directional conversion, not single direction.

  • USB to FireWire converter cable, will it work?

There are a number of sellers on auction sites selling USB to FireWire (4-pin) converter cables. Will these work with iMovie in respect of connecting my Samsung MiniDV Digital (tape) camcorder? The seller claims they will, but I am skeptical based on what I've read on the internet - so I thought I'd ask the discussions for their advice/experience...?
FYI I'm using a 13 inch Alu MacBook prior to the inclusion of a FW port...

Despite Niel's great suggestion, the bottleneck is the USB connection into the Mac; even though it's possible to plug a FireWire adaptor into that USB/ExpressCard socket, the ultimate connection (..or combination..) has a USB specification.
USB delivers burst of high speed data, not continuous hi-speed data, which is what FireWire offers, and what miniDV camcorders send out. The camcorder won't be able to make proper contact with the Mac at the far end of the chain, so the computer won't "see" the camcorder, and nor will the camcorder be able to tell the computer "here I am, sending you a digital video-&-audio stream".
The connectors will all physically fit together ..just as you can physically pour paraffin (kerosene) into a car's petrol (gasoline) tank ..but that doesn't mean that the car will actually run with a tank full of kerosene ..or diesel fuel, for that matter.

  • Is there a USB to Firewire 800 adapter?

    Hi,
I've seen that I can get a USB external hard drive for much cheaper than a firewire800 one so was wondering if there is an adapter to plug a usb hard drive into the firewire800 port on my MBP so I can save my USB ports?
    Thanks in advance
    Simon

No. No adapter exists to connect USB devices to a FireWire port; hubs which provide both USB and FireWire ports don't transfer any data between the interfaces.

  • USB to Firewire adaptors

I've seen cables advertised as USB to Firewire adaptors. Can these be used to connect USB devices to a Firewire port? One of my USB ports is dead and the other can be flaky at times.

    Hi Tar,
I'm afraid there are no such converters available that work in the required direction.
There is one I'm aware of which will run from a FW device to a USB2 ported computer, but associated software is for Windows only, as I understand it - see http://www.pixela-1.com/captycable/
It won't work in the reverse direction (which is what you would need), and, as I understand it, can only be used for connecting a video camera's FW port to a USB2 computer (by reporocessing the FW signal into video , and then sending this to the USB port) , not for other purposes such as general firewire devices like drives, burners, etc etc. So its not for you. Even to achieve only this it costs $120US.
There have been some "dual" firewire /USB hubs on the market but they all require you to have a cable to your computer's FW port and another cable to your computer's USB port to provide both forms of connection.
Your answers , I'm afraid, are to get the existing USB ports sorted out or to see if you can find FW peripherals to replace the USB ones.
    Cheers

  • Monitoring USB and Firewire Activity

I'm in need of a tool that monitors USB and/or Firewire ports of a Mac, the Mac in question is a Mac Pro running Leopard, I just need to be able to monitor activities of the ports and any other information allowed by the tool.
    Thanks in advance.

As in user activity, we are trying to monitor what files users are transferring via USB or firewire drives.

  • Is there usb to firewire adaptor for macbook air

I have macbook air and want to connect my lacie drive via firewire but dont have a firewire port.  can you connect via a usb to firewire adaptor?

Going down such as Thunderbolt to Firewire might be an option, but best bet for that is probably going to be Apple...Thunderbolt is an Apple invention.
Sonnett makes really great products, I put one of their G4 processor cards, when you could still do that, into my PPC Mac and changed it from a 604e processor to a G4.  Worked flawlessly.  Their products are very likely to do exactly as advertised.
Speed of connection goes: USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800, Thunderbolt.  Unfortunately there are not very many Thunderbolt drives on the market at this point.  Too new technology.

  • USB to firewire for car charger?

I have a car charger for my iPod that accepts a firewire cable. I'd like to charge my iPhone with the same device. Does someone make a USB-to-firewire adapter I could use? Any chance it would harm my iPhone?

  • Multiple audio-outs via USB or Firewire?

I'm looking for a hardware solution for my mid-2010 MBP w/ 2-4 audio outputs via USB or Firewire.  On the software side, I want to have multiple media players open and playing simultaniously, but each output separately.  I was told m-audio makes devices that allow this, but I am curious which may be the cheapest with this capability - or alternate manufacturers.

I think you'd have better luck going to the m-audio forums and asking your question.

It would be hit or miss to find someone here who's an expert on your issue.  Also, you might post your question to the Logic Studio forum here:

There are a lot of sound people there who might point you in the right direction with a MacBook Pro.
