USB vs. FW External HDD Transfer Speeds
I recently (yesterday) bought an Iomega minimax 250GB external HDD to go with my imac. I know that this is desined for the mac mini however I liked the USB/FW hub capability and the small footprint.
The main purpose was to clone my 160GB internal HDD and use the remainding space for DV capture and editing.
I have noticed that the transfer rate between the USB2 and FW conections is very different. I am getting approx 13MB/s from the USB2 and 30+ from the FW and was wanting to know why the USB2 was so slow. The HDD is connected directly to the back of the imac and the only other USB2 device conected is the keyboard.
I know the simplest answer is to forget the USB2 connection however to ustalise the USB and FW hub capability I need to have both connected and the system does not seem to allow me to set 1 as priority over the other and the USB2 is the default.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was not aware that you could prioritize the usb/fw
connection. I just assumed that fw was the default
when both cables were connected. How do you
prioritive the connections? I am not sure what the
value of a hub is because both usb and fw devices can
be daisy chained. I have a combo ext. HD with a usb
hub but I only use the FW port. Keeping the usb
connection also takes up a port on my IMac.
Sorry been away for a bit. There is an Auto/1394a swith on the back to switch between the Firewire and auto. Has made a significant diff setting to FW over the USB2.0.

USB 3.0 port not recognising USB 3.0 external HDD
My HP Envy 14 Spectre does not recognise my new USB 3.0 external HHD when I plug it into the USB 3.0 port. I'm using Win 7 64-bit. I've only recently purchased this ultrabook and today was the first time for me to plug in a USB 3.0 external HDD (which works fine when I plug it in the other port which is the USB 2.0 port).

I just bought a WD Mybook 160gig external hard drive with a USB connection yet the speed of the transfer is rediculously slow from the powerbook to the HDD.
ie: It took 4hrs to transfer about 10gigs of music. It also took about 3.5hrs to rip a full length dvd movie(~9gigs) to the external HDD.
From what I gather, it should not take that long to transfer items to an external drive. I was told that it was possible to rip a dvd in less than 30 minutes.
So if anyone would be able to provide me with some help, advice or what not with increasing date transfer speed, I would be greatly appreciative.

First off, the rate of speed you are getting is typical of USB 1.1. USB 2 was not introduced in Macs until June 2003 with the PowerMac G5, and later with the rest of the Mac lineup in September and October 2003.
If you want faster speed move the hard drive out of the USB case and put it in a Firewire hard drive case (if the MyBook isn't one) such as those by Relax Technologies ( http://www.granitedigital.com/ ) or http://www.macsales.com/
If the MyBook has Firewire, use that instead of USB.
PCMCIA to Firewire and PCMCIA to USB 2 adapters also exist, but usually don't supply power to the drive, and are limited to 20 MBps. Better than the 12 Mbps of USB 1.1 which is limited to if no other items are on the USB bus. If other items are on the USB bus, then you will only get the speed of the slowest item on the bus. Use Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info to launch the System Profiler and discover what is on the USB bus by selecting USB in the Hardware section of the System Profiler. -
Can I use a USB 2.0 external HDD as a bootable clone?

That's the question really, apologies if it's been asked numerous time before, I couldn't find a straight answer when I searched. I currently have 2 Firewire externals. One is for Time Machine, the other is a bootable clone. However the bootable clone is too small for my current iMac's internal HDD. Can I use a USB 2.0 instead or does it have to be Firewire? And would it need its own power supply, or could it be USB powered?

you will need to get an external case for it. It may need two usb ports or may not, I'm not to sure. It may work at a slower peed with one and max speed with two. A good google search is an excellent way of finding answers.

JBD2: Error -5 in USB 3 port external HDD when copying
Hello,
I'm getting very weird error, why I connect my external harddrive to my laptop through USB3 port and try to copy some bigger amount of data. Other USB2 ports works well.
After few minutes of copying (about 2-4 minutes) disc is disconnect leaving this in dmesg:

EDIT: I also noticed that it corrupted some of the files (my gf was browsing through photo during transfer and about 5% of them are corrupted - zero size).

Thinkpad S430 - not detecting USB 3.0 external HDD
I've noticed there are a lot of issues reported with usb 3.0 on lenovo laptops. Mines is a little different to the ones I've read so far.
Its an iomega drive and is usb 3.0, it was working a few months ago but recently decided to stop. I have no idea what could have changed to stop it from working, I use this particular drive infrequently.
The issue is that I connect the drive t the laptop, it lights up but doesn't get detected at all by windows. so far I've done the following:
- checked the drive letter in device manager
- unisntalled all usb devices from device manager and then rebooted and re-installed
- re-installed the Lenovo USB 3.0 extensible controller drivers
- tried the Intel variant of the USB 3. Extensible hard drive
- tried different ports
- tried another 2430 laptop - it didn't work on that one either!
- tried it on a HP laptop - WORKED FINE
- didabled power management on the usb root device(s)
- plugged it into the laptop whilst watching the device manager doesn't refresh, thinks nothing has been added.
- scanned for new hardware, nothing comes up
- installed the latest bios
- set USB 3.0 mode to 'enabled' in the bios no difference.
- set USB 3.0 mode to 'disabled' no difference
- tried another USB drive (2.0) WORKED FINE
-checked to see if it is recognized on boot - it is not.
And most likely other stuff which I've forgotten. Really is quite frustrating, have had two major issues with this laptop (HDD died completely not too long ago, rendering my data lost) and now this.
I think the above narrows it down to it being an issue with reading USB 3.0 drives, unfortunately no one else I know uses USB 3.0 drives so can't test another...
Can anyone suggest something I've missed?

I am not familiar witheither the ThinkPad S430 or the Iomega external USB 3.0 hard disk drive, but I wonder if the latter might not be receiving enough power over the USB cable. Does the Iomega drive have an option to take power from an external AC adapter or second USB port? If so, try providiing additional power and see if that allows the drive to be recognized when attached to the ThinkPad S430.

Satellite 2430-101: USB 2.0 External HDD problem
Hallo Everybody,
I have Toshiba satellite 2430-101. I recently bought external 40GB hard disk. When I connected to my toshiba usb hub, it says it exceeds the limit of power suppy and I need to detach the external hard disc. When I read from recent questions, somebody suggested to uncheck the power options to the usb hub, but still it says the same. Are they anybody to help me.

Satellite M30X: Problems with USB 2.0 external HDD

I have a Toshiba Satellite M30X. I recently bought myself a 200GB External Hard Disc. It has its own Power supply. If I connect it with USB 2.0 to my Laptop it happens to diconnect and reconnect permanantly. Sometimes it works, then I can put Data on the Disc. Then again it diconnects and reconnects many times. I've already tried another USB Port, but there is no difference. It's very strange, because I connected the External Hard Disc to many other Computers (Laptop and Tower) and it ALWAYS works!!! Its only with my Laptop it disconnects and reconnects the whole time. As I said, not always. Sometimes it works for like an half an hour or so then the action starts again ...
Can somebody help???

I really dont know why this happen. A friend of mine has the same problem with his desktop. While copy process runs the HDD is suddenly disconnected and there is also acoustic sound when the hardware is removed.
I have connected his HDD on my Tecra and there is no problem. I really dont know what the problem can be. Maybe there is some problem with OS because I can not believe that there is some contact problem with USB ports.
If you use many different USB devices at the same time maybe there is some conflict between few different drivers. Sorry but it is not easy to give some precise explanation. -
Airport Extreme REQUIRES powered USB hub for external HDDs
Just bought an Airport Extreme Wireless dual-band N router (January 2012). It works very well and having the separate 2.5 and 5 GHz bands is a fantastic feature. Setup was really easy and it essentially worked 'out of the box'. The one issue I had is attaching a USB Western Digital 1 TB HDD to share on the network and use for Time Machine backups from multiple MacBook Pro laptops.
The drive would appear in the Aiport Utility's "Share Hard Drive" tab, but it was listed as zero bytes and wasn't available to actually share out over the network. I formatted it as a single volume to make sure there wasn't an issue with the drive itself (although it should support multiple partitions on a drive), and it mounted to my Mac just fine, but it still would not work with the Airport Extreme.
After reading several posts on these Apple forums I picked up the fact that the only way most people get their hard drives to work is by purchasing a powered USB hub and connecting that between the Extreme and the hard drive. Some hard drives do appear to work plugged directly into the Airport Extreme, but that seems to be more of the exception than the rule.
The reason given is that the USB port on the Airport Extreme was originally designed for printers and is basically underpowered for proper HDD connections. Adding a powered USB hub not only allows USB hard drives to work, but you can connect multiple USB devices (hard drives and printers) to share over the Airport Extreme through the powered hub, so you do get that added feature.
So if you have plans to upgrade to the incredibly fast and efficient Airport Extreme and plan to do your Time Machine Backups wirelessly (which works very well), add a powered USB hub to your purchase to avoid some frustration. I picked up a four-port powered USB hub at Staples for $30.
It's a great purchase otherwise. Four out of five stars in my review.For anyone else who reads this post, the respondents are correct. I cannot find anything directly from Apple that states explicity the support for Time Machine backups to a USB drive on a second generation Apple Airport Extreme. I would love to see their detailed case studies and latest tests that demonstrate the backup corruption isues, and more recent tests conducted with the latest Airport Extreme, running the latest firmware with Lion 10.7.2.
Having said that, each person who is interested in this as a backup solution should consider more than one source before making a final decision:

The Apple Support articles referenced that explicity state TS does not work with Airport Extreme mounted USB drives are for older OS X 10.5 and 10.6. I cannot find anything for 10.7 that states the same thing:

The other thing you can do is on the Time Machine menu, hold down the "Option" key and use the 'verify backups' option to help ensure that your TS backups are valid.
Hopefully Apple will come out with an official statement soon that speaks directly to the 2nd generation Airport Extreme on the latest firmware running TS backups from OS X Lion 10.7.
My statement about the need for a powered USB hub to have much better success with USB attached hard drives still stands. -
USB 3.0 External HDD only works on 1 USB port, rMBP 13

Last night I had a scare thinking that my WD MyPassport was corrupt because only one of my 3 partitions were showing up. I went into Disk Utility and attempted to mount the disk, only to get a message that I must repair it. I then realized that I plugged it into the right side of the computer, which is opposite of which I usually do. I removed the hard drive and switched ports, only to see that all three partitions magically appeared. Is there a reason this happened? Is there something wrong with my computer, or is this user error? I've never experienced this before.Off the top of my head there could be two reasons for this. One is that the USB port is malfunctioning. The other is there is a chance the HD is pulling more power then the USB port can supply. One USB port will tend to be slightly higher power than the other. Is the HD powered by the computer or an external power supply? Was there anything plugged into the other USB port that may have been drawing power? It is best to not rely on USB bus power to power external hard drives. If the drive does not have its own power supply consider getting a powered USB hub. This should help.

My macbook pro 15" usb drives keep disconnecting and transfer speeds become very slow.
Both the usb drives on my macbook pro 15" (2012 model) have been transferring speeds very slow and when i try to use my harddisk it keeps disconnecting. Please help
when i try to play games like minecraft and somtimes when im on the internet, ive been doing some research and apparently my cpu is really low, %User: 2.68 %System: 1.87 %idle: 96.74, is that bad? and also it is very quick to charge but like i said cant keep a charge for very long, end up having to charge it almost twice a day

Airport Extreme issue connecting through usb to freeagent external hdd
I have a brand new 15"MacBook Pro and am using an Airport Extreme for wireless internet throughout my house. That part of the system seems to work fine. My problem is that I want to connect both my printer and FreeAgent hdd to be accesses through my wireless network. When I plug in a 4 port hub everything seems fine (green light). When I plug in the Free Agent hdd the light immediately turns to blinking amber. In airport utility the hdd does not show up but I get a message which says "disk needs repair". If I plug the hdd directly into my MacBook I can can see it, read from it and write to it fine. I can't find anything that indicates that the hdd wouldn't be compatible with the Airport Extreme. Help!
You can access the AirPort Disk via normal file-sharing connection options, such as selecting the server from any Finder window’s sidebar in the Shared section. AirPort Disk uses two standard methods: AFP (for Macs) and Samba (for Windows or Linux).
Leopard accesses AirPort Disks through the Finder, just like any other network volume. Open any Finder window, and look in the sidebar for a list of servers in the Shared section. You should find your AEBSn.
To mount an AirPort Disk volume, follow these steps:
1. Select the AEBSn in the Sharing section of the sidebar.
2. To connect as a Guest user, you need take no more steps; To use a named account, click the Connect As button in the upper right and enter your credentials.
3. Double click a volume that’s shown to mount it on your system.
For both Windows XP and Vista, open the network browser by double-clicking Network on the Desktop. The base station name should appear in the Network browser. -
HT1349 very slow external HDD and usb drive connected to Apple Extreme Router

So I got a western digital USB drive (500gig) and western digital Live 2TB.
I bought a new Apple Extreme router and connected them both.
USB drive and external hdd (WD Live 2TB) very slow when connected to Apple Extreme Router, using Lion 10.7 and updated both firmware for router, western digital and Airport Utility.
Slow means, it takes half an hour to copy 200 Mb of file to the WD Live 2TB, and its connected to my router with a gigabit ethernet cable!
Is someone else having the same problem, I thought even over usb I should get around 2-5mb range.
I am using Macbook Pro and 802.11n with Lion 10.7.2
Please HelpThe USB WD 500 gig is connected to the Airport Extreme using a non-powered USB 2.0 hub, only two things a HP printer and the 500 gig is connected through it. I already formatted it to MAC OS Extended Journalled. ANd I think the speed didnt change.
For the WD 2TB Live I didnt format it to anything, started using it out of the box. I just updated its firmware. I was having the same speed even when I directly connected it to my Mac Book Pro using ethernet gigabit cable.
This WD 2TB Live doesnt have any USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connectors, just the ethernet cable. I wasnt planning to carry it around. Just wanted to use it as a good ol NAS. So then I saw the fix somewhere and connected to this drive via AFP, afp://MyBookLive._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Public and it become suddenly very fast. Just like how it should be, I easily copied 20 gigs in around 20-25 minutes. (This was dirctly connected to my computer)
So then I thought my problem is solved and disconnected my WD Live and connected it back to the Apple Router again, and the speed became very slow again. Now both the USB 500 gig and this 2TB Live are slow.
Time machine is also very slow.
Thing is I also have a linux and windows machine(in repair, but should be up soon), Since apple is the newest computer I have, I want to make it work on this first. I dont want to use the MACosx journaled on the 2TB right now. Besides formatting the USB 500 gig to this format didnt help with my speed. So the problem can be elsewhere.
- I will try to get a powered USB hub as woodmeister50 suggested.
- I dont know how to connect via iCloud as cigame suggested
Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I have tested and returned enough routers in past few weeks. I really want it to work on this combination LionOSX + Airport Extreme + WD Live.

But I'm confused. Isn't it just a marketing hype?
Since USB has a backward compatibility, USB-C port will recognize USB 3.0 peripherals.
So, all I need is to buy a USB-C to USB 3.0 cable that must be sold for $2, for my currently possesing external HDD, I believe.
