USB webcam has slow fps

My firewire socket has failed and I can't afford a new logic board, so I've bought myself a new usb webcam to take the place of my trusty isight. I've got a Logitech quickcam pro 9000. My problem is that I can't get anwhere near the 30 fps it should be providing; usually I don't get more than 5-6 fps. The odd thing is that occasionally I get 15 fps, but i can't replicate it. This is in QT pro and also in ichat using conference recorder to make movies with. Macam doesn't work with the 9000 pro. Do I need to upgrade to Leopard? I tried upgrading to 10.4.9, but software updater won't let me.

I'm using the same camera on my MacPro, and found that with the current built-in support for USB video class this will not get better.
There are several things to consider:
1) In low light (and with the "generic" USB video class drivers on MacOS X), the camera will "slow down" its fps rate to collect more light and reduce noise.
2) In Quicktime Pro, recording in "camera native" will invariably result in a 1600x1200 JPEG-compressed movie at 5 fps.
3) In Quicktime Pro, the best frame rate i got out of it was approx. 10-12 fps, but the recorded movie itself has 30 fps, i.e. it's padded by repeating one frame 2-3 times. Granted, this compresses rather well since nothing's changing between those duplicated frames, but it feels like cheating.
4) Using Apple's own USB Prober tool (comes with the developer tools), one can "see" all the data channels the camera offers to the computer (in the ballpark of 20 data streams the computer could request, ranging from 320x240 to 960x720, each with several frame rates to pick from, and in MotionJPEG or uncompressed). There's just no way (yet?) to pick one.
I'd suggest using Apple's feedback web form (i did yesterday, filed it in "Quicktime -> Feature requests). While i'm happy the camera works "out of the box", i'd be even more happy if it did record smooth 30fps video as well. Not that it matters much for videophoning, since that's compressed to death anyway, but to see it's all already there, with just a "pick input format" selector missing...

  • USB Webcam when using Bootcamp to run WindowsXP?

Is it possible to use an external webcam, e.g., Logitech's, and able to use it on the iMac running WindowsXP with Bootcamp?
I'm planning to use it with MSN Messanger 7.5. Thanks. I just wish that Microsoft will come out with a crossplatform Messanger where I can use my iSight (the built in webcam on my iMac) to video chat.
    Patrick

Maybe someone here will see this and be able to let you know if an external USB webcam has worked in Windows, in theory it seems that it should.
    Meanwhile, aMSN is a MS Messenger replacement that uses your built-in iSight just fine on the iMac;

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
If you're running a MacBook with the lid closed, open the lid. Any difference?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • Have installed 10.10 on my iMac (mid 2007) 2.4 GHz 2Gb memory which has slowed to a crawl

have installed 10.10 on my iMac (mid 2007) 2.4 GHz me 2 GB which has slowed to a crawl

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My built in webcam has stopped working on Skype following an update. Does this mean my macbook air has blocked videochat on skype? How can I fix this problem?

Hi, my built in webcam has stopped working on Skype following an update. Does this mean my macbook air has blocked videochat on skype? How can I fix this problem?

    See this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5306216?tstart=0
    FIX:
    1. You need Time Machine
    2. Go to folder /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/
    3. Copy AppleCamera.plugin to good place (usb memory stick is the best place).
    4. Go to Time machine in date that skype work fine.
    5. Change AppleCamera.plugin with file from Time Machine
    6. Restart system, Now skype need to work with camera.
    If that doesnt pass,
Suggest looking here, much success has been found:

  • Acquire image from USB webcam

Hey everyone.  I have a Logitech USB webcam that I would like to use to acquire still images.  I am using LV 8.2.  All the posts I have read suggest using NI-IMAQ for USB Cameras.  I have tried to install it, but it says "You must have Vision 7.1 or higher with LabVIEW 7.0 or higher, or you must have Vision Assistant 7.1 or higher installed to use this add-on."  I don't have Vision or Vision Assistant.  Am I doing something wrong?  None of the other posts seemed to mention that you needed Vision in order to use the add-on.  Does anyone know how I can acquire images from my USB webcam through LV 8.2 without having to buy additional software?  Thanks!
    Jay Mathews
    CPP, Inc.

This question comes up often. That driver is something that NI provides as a convenience, and yes it requires additional software, as stated on the description for it. As for alternatives, did you get any software with the camera that looks like it could be used with LabVIEW, like an ActiveX library? That can certainly be used. As mentioned in this thread, supposedly RoboLab for LabVIEW has some tools, but I've never used it myself. You can also try the LabVIEW Webcam Library. Kind of old, though.

  • Can I use FaceTime with an aftermarket USB webcam?

I'm currently looking at getting a Mac mini and using an aftermarket DVI monitor that doesn't have a webcam. I'd still like to be able to use FaceTime with my Mac so I'm looking at an external USB webcam. I'm just wondering if this will work or if I must have an Apple iSight camera to make FaceTime work? I really don't know much about it as all my other FaceTime devices have built in webcams. If anyone has tried it with success please let me know.

    Hello andywl2000
As long as you have a web cam internal or external, you will be fine.
OS X Mountain Lion - Technical Specifications
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP654
Photo Booth Requires a FaceTime or iSight camera (built in or external), USB video class (UVC) camera, or FireWire DV camcorder. Backdrop effects when using a DV camcorder require fixed focus, exposure, and white balance.
FaceTime Video calls require a built-in FaceTime camera, an iSight camera (built in or external), a USB video class (UVC) camera, or a FireWire DV camcorder, and a 128-Kbps upstream and downstream Internet connection. Making HD video calls requires a built-in FaceTime HD camera and a 1-Mbps upstream and downstream Internet connection. Receiving HD video calls requires a supported Intel-based Mac.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    -Norm G.

  • Copying speed of files has slowed down significantly

copying speed of files has slowed down significantly
and if initiate two different copy processes then it slows so much that 1 GB data takes time like it was 15GB

Again, it depends on file types. Sometimes Apple files are not single files but packages of many smaller files, for example the iPhoto Library. Right-click in Finder, if there's "Show Package Contents", then it is technically not a single file.
For simple file transfer from one machine to another per USB drive, it can save some time to zip the data before and after transfer to and from the USB drive.

  • Mini not reading usb webcam

I have attached a Logitech USB Webcam (Pro 9000) to my mini via a Belkin 5 port USB hub, but the mini does not see it. I have tried attaching direct to a USB port on the mini itself, but to no avail. ????

I notice they don't advertise Mac compatibility. It may use a proprietary driver only for Windows. I would check around elsewhere on the web to see if anyone has it working with a Mac.

I have a macbook pro 13’ (late 2011) 2.8Ghz Intel i7 memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and have upgraded my OS X Lion to Mavericks 10.9.5. Everything has slowed down and the battery lasts a bit earlier. How do I go back to the older OS X Lion? Or should I improve speed differently? Would improving memory to 8GB help?

  • Built-in microphone of a usb webcam in snow leopard

    Hi,
This is probably a bug in snow leopard. Not sure if anyone has this issue.
I've tested 3 different webcam on this operating system. One is Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 (Mine's called Webcam Pro 9000, according to Logitech customer service, they are exactly the same products with different name on the box.), one is Logitech Mac Fusion, and the last one is Microsoft VX-5500.
All works under snow leopard except sometimes after wake from sleep or restart, the built-in microphone doesn't work anymore.
If I go System > Preferences > Sound and choose Input, the built-in microphone shows as "Unknown Audio Devices" on all three cameras, but there's no "bars" in the sound indicator below the volume control. Sound doesn't work in Quicktime X nor any other applications, but the video works perfectly all the time.

Just want to add to this post:
The USB webcam's built-in mic that doesn't work seems to be magic mouse related. (Possible drivers or bluetooth related)
If I use a PC USB wireless mouse, after wake from sleep or a fresh restart, the usb webcam's built-in microphone works as charm. If I turn on magic mouse to wake the mac, the usb webcam's built-in microphone doesn't work. However, the video works just fine.
Another interesting discovery is that when I change the display resolution to 1080p (my mac's running on a tv), there seems to be flicker problem with the mouse pointer. The screen is just fine but the magic mouse pointer seems to jump around the screen. It doesn't happen when I use the standard PC USB wireless mouse.
Also, when the usb webcam's built-in mic stops working, the two-finger swipe function of the magic mouse doesn't work sometimes.
I'm not sure if anybody have the same issue but I hope this would help somebody troubleshooting the problem. I'm currently switching to a usb wireless mouse instead of the magic mouse and everything is now working just fine, even the built-in microphone.

  • What support is there for a USB Webcam in Labview, and on what platforms?

I need to acquire a real-time image from a USB webcam for a remote control program I am building. It has to be USB as it needs to work on many computers without worrying about video data acquiring PCI cards and the like. I would like it to run on Windows 2000 ideally. Any ideas?

Check the following answer by Jim Kring. Also check previous posting from him, as he has been succesful using Video For Windows in LabVIEW.
