USB3 adapters or thunderbolt docks for Snow Leopard?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro, 15" with USB2 and Thunderbolt. Any way I can add USB3 working in Snow Leopard? The thunderbolt docks require Mountain Lion 10.8 and rely on Apple USB 3 drivers that do not exist in Snow Leopard. Also I have no express card slot so I can't use Express card based adapters.
Thanks

No. Upgrade and buy the CalDigit device if your computer has Thunderbolt.
Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Thunderbolt docks on snow leopard

I was thinking about getting one of the thunderbolt docks (belkin, matrox, or caldigit when it comes out).
My early 2011 MBP quad i7 2.0 (has thunderbolt port) is running snow leopard and I am reluctant to upgrade. These thunderbolt docks stipulate mountain lion is required - but I am wondering if this is only to use the USB3 ports.
Does anyone know if I would be able to use USB2 devices (via the USB3 ports) with this dock and snow leopard? I have no need for USB3 currently.
    Thanks

I bought this dock with the same intentions. You need mountain lion for this to work. Under Snow Leopard it just doesn't get recognized. My solution was to partition my drive and add Mountain Lion to use usb 3 at half speed (that's the device's limit 2.5Gbs).

  • Virtual desktop for Snow Leopard?

I like the Spaces in Snow Leopard, but those are not real separate desktops. For Leopard there was some cool software (never used it, but its exactly what i am looking for):
    http://www.yousoftware.com/desktops/desktops.php
But for Snow Leopard, it doesn't work. Other similar software also doens't support Snow Leopard.
Does anybody know some Virtual desktop supporting software for Snow Leopard?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but spaces is really only spaces in wich you can put different programs in. Not different desktops, with seperate files on echt desktop, different backgrounds, maybe different docks.
I don't think there's ever been a virtual desktop application for the Mac that allowed for separate files on each desktop, nor different docks.
    This app
    http://thecocoabots.com/hyperspaces/
adds many features to the basic Spaces. For other docks you can explore apps like

I have updated from Snow Leopard to Lion with Safari Version 5.0.5. Now I can not update to Safari 5.1. There is no update in the Software Updater, and on the apple-download page, I only found a Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard. When executing it, there is an error message, that it is for 10.6 only.
It seems that I should have first updated Safari, and then only to Lion, which I didn't. Any idea how I can fix this now without having to rollback to Snow Leopard, update Safari and then go back to Lion?

Try this Safari5.1 from the installer package
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/cc9005d/n/Safari.pkg.zip
The download worked better with Firefox not sure why. At the bottom of the page after the captcha>> slow down load is the Free link,  it took about 4 minutes to download on my test.

  • Install Disk for Snow Leopard will not boot on an iMac 27in

My Install Disk for Snow Leopard will not boot on my iMac 27in. The Apple Logo is the only thing the user will see. The current OS on the system is 10.6.6. Upon placing the Snow Leopard DVD in the system, the DVD players spins for a few seconds and displays the Apple Logo. Nothing happens after 20 minutes.

Yes, it is ridiculous how it is impossible to install Snow Leopard. I have two Snow Leopard DVDs: one that I purchased for a Macbook soon after it's release (10.6.0), and one that came with my iMac (10.6.4). Both of these boot up my Macbook (running 10.6.7) just fine. My SL 10.6.0 DVD mounts onto my iMac (Lion 10.7.0), but you cannot run the install. I attempted to boot from this DVD and got the infinite white screen and Apple logo, as some have reported above. The other SL 10.6.4 DVD will not even mount in Lion, and will not even show up as a bootable drive when I attempt to select it after holding alt/option on reboot.
I created a bootable external drive from SL 10.6.0, attempted boot, same infinite white screen/apple logo.
I created a bootable external drive from SL 10.6.4 on my macbook. I attempted to boot from this drive, and got the white screen of death, except that this time I actually got the loading symbol underneath the Apple logo. After about a minute of attempting to boot, the Apple logo changed to a circle with a diagonal line through it (the "NO!" sign).
I took my iMac to the genius bar. They inserted SL 10.6.0, which would not boot. Then they determined that my computer had to run 10.6.4 and later. So, they restored an image of SL 10.6.4 onto my partition (not an install from an image, but an image of SL already installed). Hurray! Snow Leopard was successfully shoved onto my iMac!
I then deleted a third partition on my hard drive I did not need anymore, which somehow screwed up my SL partition (even though it said "Will not erase partition SL or Macintosh HD). Now I am back at square one, and I guess I need to take my flippin iMac back to Apple for them to do what I should be able to do.
I like Apple, but sheesh do I hate Lion right now.

  • How do I reinstall Lion if I get a new hard drive?  My mac came with Leopard and I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard

My MacBook Pro originally came with Leopard.  I have the OS and Applications disks for Leopard but I cannot find my upgrade disk for Snow Leopard.  I would like to perform a clean install of Lion on the new hard drive and restore some data from my Time Machine backup.  I am not looking to restore the current image to my new hard drive.  I have not yet removed the exisiting hard drive nor have I wiped my data.

The only way to do that is to buy a New SL Retail DVD. Or you could buy the Lion Install USB thumb drive from Apple for $69.
You must have SL installed to then install Lion or have a thumb drive with the Lion installer.
You could also create a Lion USB Recovery thumb drive using Lion Disk Assistant. But you need to have Lion already installed and the Lion RecoveryHD Partition on your drive to make the Recovery thumb drive.

  • After I installed 10.6.8, my HP Officejet lost the ability to print 2-sided.  I installed the latest HP drivers for Snow Leopard, but the 2-sided option is turned off and greyed out.

After I installed 10.6.8, my HP Officejet 7310 lost the ability to print 2-sided.  I installed the latest HP drivers for Snow Leopard, the 2-sided option shows up in the print window but is turned off and greyed out.  Also the scan function won't let me scan at any density greater than 150 dpi.  I have talked to Applecare and to HP tech support and been told "too bad."  Any help would be appreciated.

THANK YOU!  And who are you?  I spent a couple of hours on the phone with Applecare and with HP Tech Support and they couldn't fix what you did in a few words.  Many thanks!  John

  • IMessage for Snow Leopard (10.6.8)

I am on a MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo, with 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, running OS 10.6.8.
I am currently deployed to Afghanistan (p.s. the internet is pretty slow over here).
I always have my iPhone with me for taking pictures, and there are a few hotspots near the USO area where I can access the wifi and use iMessage with friends and family back in the world, email, Facebook, etc..
When I am in my room, I do have wired internet that I pay for through an ISP called sniperhill.  I use my MacBook Pro here in my room.
Is there a version of iMessage that I can install on my MacBook Pro to replace iChat and then be able to iMessage my friends and family on their iOS devices (the folks I am messaging all have iPhone 4S or newer).  I found a place to download iMessage for Mac, but after a 45+ minute download, it turned out to require 10.7 or later.  D'oh!
I use iChat sometimes to video chat with my wife and kids, but they aren't always on the MacBook at the house.  If I could iMessage them while in my room on my laptop, then we could coordinate to have them power up and hop in front of the MacBook at home, then I could use FaceTime 1.0.2 to chat with them.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    HI,
    Sorry about the delay.
I also see there are 19 "Me Too" clicks.
iMessages is the service run by Apple that basically started with the iOS devices and was a beta for a time in Lion (OS X 10.7) which also was date limited and ended on the 14th December 2012.
It is no only available with the Messages app in Mountain Lion.
FaceTime is available for Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) and can then FaceTime to those iOS devices.

  • I have Lion as my current and main OS. Is it possible to partition part of my hard drive for Snow Leopard?

I have Lion as my current and main OS. Is it possible to partition part of my hard drive for Snow Leopard? I'm good on partitioning but when I insert the Snow Leopard install disk a message tells me I can't run the install program because I currently have Lion installed... obviously. Have I gone about this the wrong way? Do I need to boot the computer using the Snow Leopard install disk instead of my main HD?

Apple will never update that as for the most part it is true, and the fact that they really don't want you to run older OS X versions (for whatever reason).
Now this probably won't work with the next line of MBPs and MBAs that come out. But it is for the current builds.
But as I stated you need one of the lastest builds of SL for it to even boot the system.
It won't work with the retail 10.6.3 DVD disc. That version does not have the correct drivers for the newest Mac's.

  • Address book and ical not working for snow leopard clients

We have upgraded our server to mountain lion from snow leopard.
At first glance all appears to have gone well, however, the ical and address book services don't appear to be working for snow leopard clients. These services DO appear to be working for lion clients.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I am at work right now and don't have access to my Mac. But I need to as if your Dad is on Windows Active Directory network? I also found these directions for Princeton's 2010 Exchange that might help. Did he set up the Address contacts & iCal Calenders were enabled when setting up the account in Mail?

  • USB to DVI for Snow Leopard

Everything Other World Computing (OWC) sells is for Mac, and this adaptor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/VIDU2DVIA/
says 10.4.11 and up/ However, there is this note:
OWC Note: The current driver temporarily does not support portrait mode under 10.6.3 - A solution is being explored.
If Portrait Mode is not needed, then this should work.

  • Wish List Updates for Snow Leopard

If you support any of the following, please send them to Apple's suggestion box.
I would like Apple to offer the following settings, preferably without third party fixes.  HOWEVER, feel free to respond with your favorite work-around solutions.  I need to learn Terminal!
    1. Safari - close download window upon completion
    2. Safari - remove ALL cookies and cached items when "resetting" same.  There are always a select few that have to be manually deleted
    3. Safari - have a built in video downloader/converter - Yes there are good third party solutions for this
    4. Safari - allow Private Viewing as a default option
1.Pointer options - Create an option in preferences to enable the pointer to automatically go the default option selection (as is possible in that "other" operating system.  You know, the one that pirated the window concept)
    1. Apple mail - #1 request is identify a way to allow the numerous superior email clients interface as seamlessly with other native apps.
    2. Apple mail - short of that, create a setting to turn off or allow a time setting to override an email automatically being marked as read if it happens to be highlighted with you open the app, thereby appearing in the preview pane. Appearing in the preview pane does not mean I have read it.
    3. Apple mail - provide an option for creating return receipts requests
    4. Apple mail - What it that box that appears around blocks of text in received mail that makes editing more difficult than it should be
    5. Apple mail - Provide a tool to apply the formatting to other parts of the email (sort of like the paint brush tool in that OS with the "W" word)
    6. Apple mail - If I label a sender as "not-junk" do not put label mail from this sender as Junk.  I do not want all senders in my address book.
    7. Apple mail - If I label a sender as "JUNK" future mail from this sender should also be JUNK, no?
    8. Apple mail - Create a rule that allows "Bounce" as an option
    1. iPhoto - I know I must be missing something here, so please chime in -
How or what can I do to save photos into iPhoto when I am not using iPhoto.  The most common annoyance for me is saving photos off email attachment or from the web.  There MUST be something I am doing wrong.  Where is the "Save to iPhoto Library" option?
    1. QuickTime - Please bring back QT Player 7!!!
    12. I know we mustn’t use "other" browsers, but in those rare events that it happens - how nice would it be to have a native bookmark sync option or common folder?
    13. Finder - allow more columns in the viewing options for Spotlight
Please feel free to add to the list.

So may words, so little help.  You do realize that they call this a Support Community, right?
    1. Safari - close download window upon completion
Mine already does this, and I'm sure you can do it in Snow Leopard, too.
When you refer to "mine," what OS are you referring to?  Are you willing to share your knowledge on where I might find this capability?
    3. Safari - have a built in video downloader/converter - Yes there are good third party solutions for this
That's not the job of a browser, and it's not going to happen. Keep dreaming.
Thanks again for the helpful advice. I am impressed with our willingness to help.
    4. Safari - allow Private Viewing as a default option
You can turn it on yourself. There's also AppleScript, or assigning a keyboard shortcut.
I am very aware of how to turn it on.  I would prefer to leave it on by default.  Care to share your AppleScript knowledge?
Apple mail - provide an option for creating return receipts requests
It's been there for years—where have you been?
Thanks again for the poweruser tip, very helpful.
    1. Apple mail - #1 request is identify a way to allow the numerous superior email clients interface as seamlessly with other native apps.
That's entirely your opinion, which isn't shared by the vast majority of Mac users.
I am sorry I do not share you opinion, nor did I know you speak for the majority of Mac users.  Perhaps with your superior guidance I would become a power user too?
Where is the "Save to iPhoto Library" option?
Have you tried looking at the options given to you when you receive email with attachments? There's a Save button in the Header section that gives you the option to save the image to iPhoto.
And how does this sugggestion help when downloading a photo from the web?
Perhaps if you spent time getting to know your Mac and OS X, you'd find that there aren't nearly as many "issues" as you seem to imagine.
Yes, and I perhaps if you would share a bit of your superior knowledge I would agree.  That was my hope in posting to a "support community."  You put a fair amount of effort into your criticism.  Just "imagnie..."

  • Huge memory leak in java jvm after update 2 for Snow leopard

Since I updated to Java Update 2 for Snow Leopard my JVM suddenly grows massive (10GB+ real memory - -Xmx=3500m) consuming all memory and rendering my iMac unusable. This does not happen predictably but does happen several times a day now requiring I power off and on again.
I had been living happily with update 1 with no such problem.
I need to either go back to update 1 (should have it on Time Machine) or find a solution for this problem.

Our application is a j2ee-based commercial application facing to specified customers, having about 120 access request an hour.
We ' re doing stress test on the test server. The strange memory leak occurs at 1:20 am this morning while we're out of company , and no job was scheduled to run at that time. So I have the tendency to image that there is something inside oc4j had occured.
I have used OptimizeIt to monitor the heap status. However , as the memory leak problem occurs very occasionally ,and that tool deadly slows our server, we are currently using no profiling tools.
