USB3 PCI Card - MacPro 4.1 10.8.3

Has anyone found a successful combonation of a USB3 PCI card and a USB3 compact flash card reader?
I have a MacPro 4,1 (2009).
Added a CalDigit FASTA-GU3.  No problems on sSata side of card with my eSata external backup.
Addded Lexar Pro Dual-Slot USB3 card reader.
MacPro spontaneously restarts.  Error messages originally pointed to sophos anti-virus software, which ahs been uninstalled.  Reinstalled Apple 10.8.3 (combo) update, vberified and repaired disc permsiions in Unitlity, reinstalled Caldigit drivers, Lexar ahd me update firmware on the card.
Now, when I restart my MacPro with the Lexar card plugged in, the Mac restarts a second time during the restart process, and an error report is generated.
Anyone have a successful USB3 PCI card/ compact flash card reader combo that works?
When is Apple going to support USB3 on our MacPros?
Why doesn't Apple help us leep our MacPros up-to-date?

I installed the CalDigit Fasta-6GU3 and drivers to replace an eSata only PCI card.  I plugged in the Lexar compact flash card reader and downloaded a practice set of photo files with no problems.  A couple days later, the MacPro spontaneously restarted.  It had never done that before.  The Apple error report ended with the Usb3 PCI card, Lexar card reader and then Apple built in firewire (nothing was plugged into a fire wire port).
CalDigit read the error reports and noticed Sophos antivirus was on both reports and recommended I disable it and re-install the Apple 10.8.3 (Combo) update, ran verify disc permissions and reinstalled their drivers.  The computer did not restart on its own for two days.
I had also opened a support request with Lexar.  Their card was the second last item in the error report and I suspected a driver conflict.  Lexar got back to me on the second day with  instructions to update the firmware in the card reader.  I followed the instructions.  When the computer restarted, just as it was about to go to complete the normal restart process, it went to a black screen and restarted again.  And generated an error report, which I copied to a text file.  No card was left in the card reader.
I left the card reader plugged into the PCI card when I shut down. The next time I turned the computer on, it did the same dual restart and generated an error report.  I unplugged the card reader, ran a restart, it restarted fine.
Lexar tech had no answers other than return the card reader, which I did late yesterday.

  • Will a 2006 Mac Pro (running Lion) accept a usb3 pcie card?

I have a Mac Pro (2006-running Lion 10.7.5, Build 11G63). Is there any way that it will recognize and accept a USB PCIe Card?

I think you would do find to narrow it down from generic - and yes of course you can, I do on mine and am using Allegro USB3 2-port from Sonnettech.com
Chips change and some people have trouble or it works but not the way that they want or expected.
Check out OWC www.macsales.com and then check for specific cards.

  • PCI Card & 4 bay enclosure not showing up on MacPro

I have a pre-09 MacPro and a WiebeTech RTX400H-SV bay enclosure which connects via eSata. Before today I had no problem using drives in any of the 4 bays. But today I started it up and it wouldn't come on the desktop. I checked for it ref Drive Utility in case it just needed to be mounted, and it didn't show up [I had 2 drives in the enclosure just in case]. Then I checked the System Info and it says that I have a PCI card in Slot 3 [it's a 2 slot eSata card] and it says "pci1095,3132 OtherMass Storage Controller PCI Slot3" and driver not installed. I don't even recall where I got the PCI card - do I need the PCI card driver or the RTX driver and if the first, how do I know where to get the right drive? I don't know why it's not on the computer = if it is somewhere what would it be called or what extension would it have and where would it go???

Your answer prompted me to not only check your link but see if I had any records or information around here ref. what the card was. Fortunately, I saved the box and it's a Tempo Sata E2P card from Sonnet. I went to its site and was able to find a driver, downloaded and installed it and voila, the disks in the enclosure appear on the desktop.
Thanks so much for the lead!!!

  • Can you use regular PCI cards in Mac Pro?

My G5 is getting a bit long in the tooth and I want to buy a Mac Pro. It says that it supports PCI Express cards, but I have several PCI cards in my PowerMac. Since I don't want to buy them all over again, I was wondering if they will work in the Mac Pro?

    Hello Hatter,
There is an external solution Now, (Thanks to a Genius named Markus) I have mine running a treat on My Macpro.

  • Mini PCI Card causes Mac Pro to think the CPUs are overheating

I bought a Mini PCi Card that I am using in an 8x 2.28 machine and when I put it in the system thinks the CPUs are overheating (red lights near RAM risers). When I pull it out there is no problem.  Any way to force MacPro to bypass POST?  Any other ideas?

This is called driving in the dark, blind.
What card is it you are trying to use, and what is the make, etc of it? and there are a couple makes of adpaters.
There are PCI cards that were keyed for 3.3v and 5v and some for both.
Anyone that dealt with SCSI controllers, with how even the drivers and firmware of the drive and card and OS had to be matched and certified to be compatible.
Buit all of this is just meaningless chatter.
I think you are calling a PCIe 1x slot as mini.
And why would you want to?
Again, plug in the make/model and other specs and facts, then hit Bing (or Google, but I come to prefer Bing).

  • PCIe card to enable bootable SATA3 SSD on early 2008 mac pro?

    Hello all,
Looking to get some feedback on the potential workability of this upgrade for my early 2008 MacPro (16GB RAM running OSX 10.6.7). I work in video post production so I need speed though not necessarily a lot of space.
    Here is what I'm thinking:
BOOT DRIVE: Internal 240GB SSD (OWC SATA3)
    - Power via optical bay via adapter cable
    - Data via PCIe SATA3 card and cable running out the back
    Was thinking of this card:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-PCI-E-SATA-3-0-SATA-III-Card-6Gb-s-eSata-ASM1061-/16 0583982904?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCard
as it seems to be the same as this but cheaper:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/MXPCIE6GS2/
SCRATCH DRIVE: 2x 300GB Velociraptor SATA2 in software RAID 0 in drive bays 1+2
    SCRATCH DRIVE/PROJECT DRIVE: 2x 1TB 7200 SATA2 drives in RADI 0 in drive bays 3+4
BACKUP/STORAGE DRIVES:  2x large 5900 drives connected via external Icy Dock stations that connect to 2 internal eSATA ports on logic board via extension cables. Possibly an extra SATA drive in the optical bay too via SATA-IDE converter. I have an external firewire optical drive.
    Questions:
    - I am using a flashed PC graphics card: 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4870 which takes up so much space I only have room to use the two top x4 PCI slots. WIll these slots be able to fully support the PCIe SATA3 card for the SATA3 SSD?
    - Will the SSD be bootable with the PCIe card linked above? It appears to be the same one that OWC sells but cheaper?
    - Is the speed increase with the PCI card/SATA3 SSD really worth all the fuss or should I just get a SATA2 SSD? I've read on barefeats that SATA3 SSDs can actually be slower than SATA2 SSDs when not in a SATA3 connection
    - Any bottlenecks you can see for limiting my speeds? Will the total transfers max out at 1gbps and do you think this will push that?
    Many thanks for your time!

It has been reported that OS X 10.7 and 10.6.8 do support the ASMedia ASM1061 chipset, which can be found on some very low cost cards.
    http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/08/increasing-disk-performance-sata-6gbs.htm l
No promises that it will work for you, but its a cheep enough card that it may be worth trying. You can find the card for even less on eBay by searching for ASM1061. Just be sure you get one with the ports in the right place for you (some have all external, some all internal).
Likewise the Marvel chipset has been known to work as well.

  • Pcie card compatability with mac pro

I started getting regular Kernel Panics after installing a PCIe card (in slot 3) to connect my 750gb seagate pro drive to my mac pro via eSATA (the specs for the PCIe card are below).
    http://www.avlab.com.tw/sata/10060109000bx.htm
I have uninstalled the drivers and my mac has stopped crashing. My problem is that since the silgate 3132 driver is (im told) pretty much universal for running this kind of pcie card, how can I be sure that if I purchase another card it won't start causing kernel panics again?
    Any help much appreciated,
    Henry

I know im being stupid (sorry) but what do you mean by using up all four of the drive slots in the mp?
I inserted a pcie card in pcie slot 3 because there are no external esata ports on my macpro and i needed one to connect an esata drive.
with regards to the pcie card itself i've pretty much given up on making it work as from looking at their site whilst they claim mac compatability it seems to have been something of an afterthought.
my problem is that im worried any pcie esata card i buy will conflict with my mac because i've been told that they mostly use the same generic si3132 drivers which caused the kernel panic.

  • Is MSI P35 Neo compatible with new USB3 PCI-E adapters?

I've just bought a 1 Tb Samsung USB3 powered external HDD.  Currently I only have USB2 ports which can't handle the transfer speed of USB3.  Is my MSI P35 Neo mainboard compatible with new USB3 PCI-E adapters, if I were to fit one?
    Thanks in advance
    Pedro

If it is an add-on card, it should work if the drivers are properly installed.
However, if you need more information on compatibility results, I suggest that you log a technical support ticket with MSI.

  • Bought wrong e-SATA PCI Card and seek advice on the right one to buy

I have a MacPro bought in 2006 with Intel Processor but still having the old MAC OS X 10.4.11 Tiger version.
    I bought an e-SATA PCI card : http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXPCIE6GS2/
But I realised first that I could not insert it. The distance between the slots in the mother board and the external exit whole to fix the card and not compatible (card too short). Furthermore the card specs says that it requires max OS 5 version or later.
So what do you recommend that would go physically in the slot and at the same time fitting with my MAC OS 4.11 version ? This card is to be used to connect external drives suing e-SATA connections.

Nothing wrong with using that card in your Mac Pro. The card will fit in your MP's slots, so if you are unable to seat it then you aren't doing something correctly. The specs say the card is backward compatible with PCI-e 1.0 slots.
You will have to upgrade your OS to the requisite version. Given the cost of Leopard you may wish to instead upgrade to Snow Leopard.

  • Wattage for Apple-installed PCIe cards

The MacPro PCI system is limited to a total of 300 watts. My new MacPro had the Apple RAID card and the ATI Radeon X1900 XT card preinstalled. I need to know the power consumption (Watts) for each of these cards, so that I can determine what other PCIe cards I can install. What are the Watt figures for each of these cards?
    Thank you
    NB

    An excerpt from bare feats...
    *RUNNING TWO RADEON X1900 XTs
We know of at least one university running two Radeon X1900 XTs in their Mac Pro. They are using them to drive three 1920x1080 projectors. I'm not sure now many Mac Pro users would want two X1900s in their Mac Pro but there are two things you should know if you do:
    1) The PCI Express bus can handle a total of 300 watts. Each Radeon X1900 XT requires a peak of 132 watts. So two of them equals 264 watts. You should be okay if you don't add any other PCIe cards -- especially since both cards are pulling power from the special six pin motherboard connector instead of the bus!
    2) To get the best performance from both high-end cards, we recommend installing the second X1900 in slot 2 (since slot 1 is double wide) and using the Expansion Slot Utility (in System/Library/CoreServices) to configure both slot 1 and 2 to run in 8 lane (x8) mode. (Though slot 4 can be configured to run at x8 with slot 1 running at x16, the X1900's heatsink is too thick to allow it to fit there. And slot 3 can only be configured as x4.)*
I don't think Apple has as publicly stated cower consumption for the RAID card. Less than 80 Watts Max would be a good guess.

  • K9N Platinum SLI - Powering up the PCIe cards

    Hey everyone,
I've got a K9N Platinum SLI board. This board has a power supply input point called PWR2, which according to the documentation is used to provide power to stable the operation of graphics cards. My graphic card is BFG nVidia 9750 GT. This card has the PCI-Express external power plug in the back, and my power supply has a dedicated (red) connector for this purpose, which I have attached properly.
The PWR2 is currently connected also, into one of the black 12V connectors. Otherwise, everything is running fine and smooth, but I am sometimes (once a day or so) experiencing random shutdowns during intense gaming (playing LotRO). Stress testing does not cause a shutdown: I've ran 3D Mark 2007 straight for 8-9 hours, while having a CPU Burner application toast the CPU at the same time. But no problems whatsoever. No other games exhibit this problem either.
Since I am providing dedicated power through the extra connector at the back of the card, should I leave the PWR2 connector unplugged ? Is there a chance that using these two connectors at the same time causes the 12V rail to overload, and the PSU shuts down to protect itself ? When this shut down occurs, the power LED is left blinking and I need to plug out the wall socket and wait for several minutes before the blinking stops and it starts up again.
My computer has an Enermax Liberty 620W power supply, and AMD Athlon X2 4600+ CPU. So there should be enough juice, at least. I've tried the tips and tricks suggested here. Using USB-connected Keyboard and Mouse does not correct the issue. I've also verified that this is not an overheating issue. My CPU is cooled by a Scythe Ninja tower heatsink and two 12 cm fans. It is possible that the northbride is heating up (it burns the finger on touch when under load), but from the Web, I've understood that the stock passive heatsink should be enough, and that the NB chip can take rather extreme temperatures.
    * UPDATE *
Plugged the PWR2 connector out from the MB, and update the BIOS to 1.10. It's working as usual, but haven't ran any games yet. Heavy gaming usually reproduces the issue, so I'll write more when I know more.

    Updated information on the case.
I've been running 2 days now with the PWR2 unplugged. I have had zero problems with shutdowns since. The only problem I now have is that the USB keyboard and mouse refuse to work in Windows XP after an initial bootup from powered down state. I have to unplug and replug them at the login screen in order to get them work again.
So, I decided to do a final sanity check, and replugged the PWR2, then went gaming. After 2 hours of playing, my computer shutted down for the first time. Plugging in the cable did not solve the USB problem either.
As of this day, I'm leaving it unplugged. It seems like an irrelevant connector, which just causes problems.
    ** Update **
After following Bosskiller's instructions on another thread about using the "Clear CMOS" button and then reconfiguring BIOS from scratch, the cold boot USB issues were solved. The USB devices now work straight after a cold boot, with no need to replug them.
I recommend that the PWR2 -connector info is added to the list of known problems in the sticky thread. If you have a GPU card which takes its power from a dedicated rail (and your PSU has a dedicated connector for this purpose), then leaving the PWR2 -connector unplugged might resolve your shutdown issues, like it solved mine.
After all, according to the manual, this connector is used to give more voltage to the PCI and PCIe busses, and some PCI/PCIe cards might not like this idea at all. There is a reason why these cards have an additional power plug on them...

  • IPod touch will not work with USB 2.0 PCI Card?

I have a dual processor PowerMac G4 that has USB 2.0 via a PCI card. When I plug in the iPod nothing at all happens. I haven't read anything about PCI cards not being compatible with the touch. Is anyone else having this problem?

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents...I've got the same problem...I've had a Keyspan USB 2.0 5 port card in my Dual MDD G4 for years and it's worked fine. Well, until a few days ago when I tried updating some stuff on our iPods. It would initially start working then lose connection. Now nothing at all with 5 iPods. It won't even show up on the desktop under Disk Mode. I did the same and it works fine under the old stock USB 1.0 but slooooooowwww. Is this yet another problem with Leopard? I've searched the Keyspan site and they don't have any updated drivers. Guess I'll look for a Belkin as well...ugh!!! Leopard is horrible! First no printer drivers, then no iSub support, now this!

  • IPod 30GB will not work with 3rd party USB 2.0 PCI card

I've had an IOGear PCI USB 2.0 card (GIC220U-BIO) in my Sawtooth for some time now, and have been using it flawlessly with my Canon i860 printer, and Canon LiDE 30 Scanner.
Just recently I received a Video iPod (30GB) and wanted to take advantage the high speed USB bus offered on that card to sync my iPod. The problem is, when I plug in the iPod to the USB port on that card, I get the transparent gray box telling me that I need to restart my mac by pushing the reset switch, or holding the power button for several seconds (in other words, freezes).
The iPod works fine with the built-in USB ports (albeit slow), as well as the high speed port on my iBook G4. Why am I getting this error? There are no drivers or firmware updates for this PCI card available.
    Is there a solution?

Yes, use a different USB 2.0 PCI card, like from Sonnet. I use a Sonnet in a G5 and it works great. There are (at least) 2 USB chipsets and I find the TI ones are great and the other not so great.
The fact it works on 1.1 and the 2.0 on the G4 at least tells you it is not the iPod and a USB 2 card is $20 or $30 at the most.

  • How to simutaneously use 2 PCI cards, one with traditional DAQ, the other with DAQmx?

    Hi,
I am currently trying to debug a system that used to work.. but sadly isnt anymore
A single computer contains 2 PCI cards (6110 & 6036E). The 6110 card is controlled by a fairly old software, programmed in labview, and hence, using Traditional NI-DAQ. The 6036e card is controlled by a more recent soft, programmed in LV as well but using DAQmx.
the AI/AO of the 6110 card is only momentarily used (20 sec consecutively, every minute) while the 6036E card is continuously receiving and sending data on its AI/AO.
Now the problem: the program that control the 6036E card freezes every time that the old prog access the 6110 card.. and then it works again perfectly until the next time that the 6110 card is used.
So my question: how can I make those 2 cards work simultaneously?
I dont think that it is because of the software nor because of the computer lack of memory/CPU if it used to work in the past. It might be about a wrong configuration of cards in the MAX but I couldnt find anything wrong there (no problem when accessing AI/AO of both cards through "test panel")
Thank you very much for you help.

That's what bugs me. The only thing that those 2 cards share is an AO of the 6110 connected to an AI of the 6036.
For the rest, nothing is common. The 1st program only deal with device1, while the 2nd prog only access dev2. There shouldnt be any problem and everything is working fine separately. Hence, why I was wondering if the traditional daq and daqmx might conflict on a same computer.
I just cant find out why the 2nd program controling the daqmx card just freeze everytime the 1st program access the traditional card. It actually doesnt freeze completly but becomes soooo slow, with about only 2 iterations of the main while loop during those 15-20 sec (instead of the normal 3-4000 iterations during such a period).
The computer specs are a 2.2ghz proc for 1G of ram and running XP, so it should be ok.. even though the computer does slow a bit down when the 1st prog access the traditional card.
