USB3 ports have become unstable - random drive dismounts (W520)

Hi,
I have a ThinkPad W520 (ThinkVantage Toolbox shows the Product as 4270CTO). About 18months old.  Have been using the USB3 ports (direct, not via an external hub) to mount TrueCrypt encrypted external HDDs (Seagate GoFlex USB3.0 Slim/Ultraportable).
Worked well for 15 months or so.  Last couple of months the USB ports have become unstable - dismounting the external drives randomly and then Windows pops up that irritating "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it" window.  Sometimes that happens two or three times in rapid succession for the same drive, over a 4 to 10 second period.  Occassionally that's followed by a message in the system tray to the effect that the USB3 port has fallen back to USB2 (a message along the lines of "this drive could perform better if plugged into a USB3 port").
It's causing havoc with the encrypted filesystems - when I remount them I get a Windows prompt to scan and fix the filesystem due to the bad dismount.
Any ideas?
Regards,
JD

Does your Mac have ThunderBolt ports?
There are ThunderBolt to FireWire adapters.
As far as I know there are no FireWire to USB 3 adapters.

There seems to be a problem, just now, with the USB 3 ports on the new MBP's supporting eternal USB 3 drives. Some people have no luck at all - can't even recognize the drive - and some are reporting USB 2 speeds (those who drives are recognized). I'd call a dealer such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3 drives that actually work with MBP's with USB 3 ports. You may have to wait for a software/firmware update.

No, and that shouldn't be done with an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.

    Hey Stella,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities, and thanks for the question! I'd read through the following article before selling your Mac - it'll include instructions on how to reformat your hard drive:

Yes, there is. This forum is intended as a 'first line' method of support, as many support questions can be answered by other fellow MSI users, thus freeing up MSI Support personnel to answer the more tricky questions that maybe cannot be answered here. • Drives dismount when I attach Firewire Camera?

I have several G-tech external drives daisy chained 800 firewire into the back of my macpro.
I need to transfer and capture Mini dv from a camera.
I patched the firewire from the camera to the front 400 firewire port.
This caused my drives to dismount.
I thought this might be to using the front bus- so I switched the camera Firewire to the back.
    The same thing happens.
    What is going on?
I haven't used firewire in awhile- but this was never a problem before.

People shouldn't be expected to stock their macs full of internal HDs if they already have useful hardware
Why not? They just spent over $3K for a fast machine, why hold it back with drives that run at half (or less) the speed of an internal SATA drive? When you figure you can get 750GB drives for ~$130 (or 500GB drives for under $90) it makes no sense to utilize firewire for editing.
The bus problems of certain cameras can be completely avoided by eliminating firewire drives from the computer. Let the camera have the whole bus.
    Cheers,
    x

  • I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

I have moved my iPhoto to an external hard drive. so now I have to have the external hard drive connected to my laptop to view the photos.  Now when I want to import photos into iPhoto from my media card, I don't have room to connect both devices at the same time as the usb ports are side by side.  How do I import my photos from the media card to the external hard drive now?

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

It would "run" (more like Sunday stroll or walk) if you installed Snow Leopard in a VM. Especially if you have 6-core (and would help to have 6 or 8 cores anyway if you were able to and intend to make best use of nMP for video editing).
If you "classic" Mac Pro was 2009 or later, adding two AMD graphic cards, upgrading the processor to 8-core 3.xGHz would have gotten you a FCP-X capable machine and still dual boot and use Snow Leopard as needed.
Any Mac Pro can now use 1000MB/sec SSD PCIe blade to boot from and/or for scratch and editing to help improve work flow.

  • Have a 64GB flash drive that used to work and after an update, now doesn't show up in finder

I have a 64GB flash drive that worked just fine and Finder would show it when I would insert it, well it seems that after I updated my mac it now doesn't recognize or show the flash drive. I am unsure if the update did something but like I said it worked previously to update and it works on other windows based computers. So is there a way I can fix this?

    Hey Raveybaby
I would check to see if it shows up in Disk Utility. If it does, run a Repair Disk on it and also mount the flash drive as well. If it does not show up, check other ports as well.

  • 10.5.3 - USB Devices become unstable :(

Since upgrading to 10.5.3, two of my USB devices (a thumb drive and a RALink chipset-based USB wireless key - as I need to plug it into an external antenna) have become flakey.
This problem doesn't occur in 10.5 or 10.5.2, I downgraded on both machines (2007 MacBookPro and 2007 MacBook, both Intel, 4GB Ram) to test and couldn't replicate the issue. Upgrading back to 10.5.3 causes the instability again.
    Any thoughts?

I am experiencing a similar issue. I cannot write to any external usb drive. I can read files, but when I try to save, I get a disk full message. Also, I have an HP scanner/printer that when I try to scan a document, it says that the computer can't communicate with the scanner. However, I can print. I know that this is a 10.5.3 issue because everything worked fine in 10.5.2 and everything works fine when I boot up in Windows (ironic isn't it?).

  • All Appstore and  Mac updates Fail saying "...could not be verified or may have become corrupt"

Recently my Mac started to become glitchy so I decided to wipe the hard drive and reinstall my OSX Mountain Lion. After doing so almost all of my updates fail showing this msg "...could not be verified or may have become corrupt". Not to mention downloading updates take ridiculously long. I have 80mbps down and small updates say they could take up to 2 days. I wanted to try upgrading to the the newest OS however that also has the error msg…not to mention a 4 days estimated download!
any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
and yes I did set my date and time to automatic.

  • My firewire drive isn't mounting. The port is fine and the drive powers up and spins. Help anyone?

Hi, thanks in advance. My firewire drive isn't mounting. I have used this firewire drive for a few years and it has never had any problems at all. The port appears in the System Profiler and the drive is working fine. Do I need to update my firmware or something? I haven't dropped my drive or experienced any weird physical issues with either the firewire port or the drive (ie shocks from static, getting kicked accidentally, etc).
Do you have any thoughts on how I can fix this issue?  Its very critical, I have several client projects on this drive and will be SCREWED and out of a job soon if I can't get this situation solved. THANK YOU!!!

Another interesting issue, is that when the firewire (800) drive is connected, the system takes forever to boot (about 4 minutes). Without the firewire drive connected, it boots up automatically.
I suspect the long boot times is because the boot process is trying hard to get the disk checked and mounted which of doesn't happen when it is not connected.
Disk Utility doesn't see the drive at all.
Well that isn't good.  This disk may be (physically) damaged beyond repair or the format so corrupt that even DU doesn't know what to do with it.   But on the subject of firmware, you shouldn't need that for FW400/800 connections but what kind of enclosure are you using?  If there is a firmware update at all it would be from the maker of that enclosure for that enclosure.
Is it possible to remove the drive from the enclosure and put it into your mac pro?
