USB6211 produces noise in parallel scope traces
Dear all,
I have a question for the community, hope you can help me.
The system:
laptop, Win7, LV2013, USB6211
-2 analog inputs:
one from a detector (DC)
one from a signal generator (triangular, 0-10V)
acq. rate. 80kS/s per channel
acquisition: differential
Scope properties: 500 MS/s total, 250MS/s/channel
scope is grounded.
When I connect the DAQ card, turn on the signal generator and look on the scope at the signal that I am also sending in the DAQ card, it looks like picture 1. However, as soon as I start the acquisition, my scope trace starts to look like picture 2. Although I don't see this big ripple in the labview program, I am wondering what it is? Is it being generated by the DAQcard?
Secondly, when I don't plug in my laptop (so run it on battery), the triangle wave acquisition, after some time, starts to look like figure 3. With a cut of top. What is going there?
I am assuming some grounding issue, but couldn't really find a solution, so if you have any, please let me know!
Regards,
Maarten.

Maarten,
That is interesting. I suspect that you are right that the DAQ card is causing the ripple, at least in part.
What kind of a detector is it? What is the output impedance of the detector? How is the detector grounded? When you are using the scpoe, your detector signal is essentially single ended, so what is the advantage of using a differential connection to the DAQ device?
The triangle wave peak distortion issue is likely due to the common mode input voltage being exceeded.
Even though the laptop is not grounded through its power supply, the DAQ ground does connect to it through the USB port.
You probably have a ground loop or other common coupling which produces the artifacts you are seeing. Try drawing a complete schematic of your system at the block diagram level. That is, you do not need the schematic of all the internal circuits, but show every connection between modules and devices. This includes the laptop, USB device, detector (and what it is connected to), scope, signal generator, and any other devices. Show all power supply, ground, and signal connections. Somewhere on that diagram will likely be the source of your problem.

MY HP DX 2300 PRODUCE NOISE WHEN STARTED AND IS SLOW.
i have a HP DX 2300 i have installed windows 7, but the problem is that it produces noise when i start using it. and eventually it becomes slow. the noise is awful and irritates because it throughout until you shut down the computer. also it has an in built speakers but they dont function help me out guys.

[SOLVED] Headphone keep producing noises after update
I executed "pacman -Syu" yesterday. And after update my headphone isn't turned on automatically. I had install alsamixer and unmute it manually, but the problem is the headphone keeps producing annoying noises. It never happened before the update. I have win***s installed and got no problem with it.
Don't know what to do here. I've been using linux (mandriva, opensuse, fedora, slackware, and mostly ubuntu) for 5 years, but haven't been working with arch until a month ago, so you probably underestand my situation.
Thank for the cooperation..

Color Correction + DVD/MPEG Compression Produced Noise
I recently color corrected a 3-hour rock concert using FCP and a broadcast monitor. When played from the timeline the concert looks great however after outputting, MPEG compression and authoring a DVD there's video noise over the image. Almost snow like but different. I'd post a screengrab but I can't seem to take one in DVD Player. Any advice?
That's exactly right Jonathan, you need to add the 2:3 pulldown, and I can tell you all why. (I read the post from Max Average, but I'm not commenting that separately)
The DVD specification simply does not support video marked as 23.98 fps (which is how Apple wants to call it) or even 23.976 fps (which is what MPEG-2 calls it). This means that for NTSC DVDs you can only use MPEG-2 video files which are marked as 29.97 fps. This is true whether your encoder (like Compressor) is letting you be aware of it or not. There is no "native 23.98 frame rate" on a DVD and the right way of making the decoder believe it is 29.97 instead, is to use 2:3 pulldown. Any other method would just be wasting bandwidth/bitrate or picture quality, depending on which way you want to look at it.
The 2:3 pulldown process, as specified by MPEG-2, is a way for the encoder of describing to the decoder which of its already decoded fields it should be repeating (displaying once more) and when. These field repetitions are designed to increase the interlaced displayed frame rate from 23.976 to 29.97. This "new" frame rate must be explicitely written into the .m2v stream, to be accepted by a DVD authoring tool, e.g., DVD SP.
I am sure many of you may wonder why it is called "pulldown" when in fact the frame rate seems to be going "up" from 24 to 30, as I did myself back in the nineties;-)
The way to wrap ones head around that, is to think about what whould happen if you just mapped 24 FPS film frames onto the NTSC TV standard which has to display frames at nearly 30 fps on a TV. Of course the movie would run 25% FASTER on a TV than it did at the cinema/picture theatre. In that perspective, the solution had to be to SLOW DOWN (pulldown) the presentation speed on a TV. The engineers of that time (this was long before color TV was even invented)
were faced with a need for film (Hollywood movies) to be translated for TV broadcasts). Of course they could not change the 30 fps used for TV broadcasts (29.97 fps came much later when colors were added;-), so they had to come up with a scheme which made each film frame seem to last 25% longer on the TV screen, than it would have otherwise. "Pulling down" the display frequency from, the physical 30 fps to match the experienced 24 fps was accomplished by letting every other frame be displayed for 50% longer on the TV. On average that is of course 25% longer (slower) which was the goal.
I may be monitoring this thread for further comments.

My scxi 1122 produces noise when I try to measure a termocuple signal, Is it right?
I'm using module scxi 1122 connected to Lab-PC-1200/AI, and a terminal block 1322.
The jumper W1 is in position 2 "B A R0", in the lab-Pc I'm using the RSE input configuration.
I'm measuring with SCXI Temperature ScanYou will want to use the best measurement system to take your thermocouple measurements. The following Knowledge Base article covers our recommended hardware to perform thermocouple measurements.
What is the Recommended NI Hardware for Thermocouple Measurements?

While the SCXI-1122 is not mentioned in this article, you may still use it to perform thermocouple measurements. You may want to consider using the differential input mode instead of RSE. Differential mode is the best method when acquiring from a floating signal source such as a thermocouple. DIFF mode does the best job of reducing noise and rejecting unwanted common-mode voltage.
Additionally, there is a
n excellent Application Note available on our website which covers approaches to noise reduction and elimination.

Large binary data readout from scope
Hi ,
I would like to know how I can readout a large amount of data, 10 MSamples for a Scope trace of 10 us/div and display it on VI.
I am using direct SCPI commands instead drivers, due to the speed I need. After manually configuring the Scope, I run in the loop the following commands
:FORMatATA REAL,32
RUNSingle;*OPC?
:CHANnel1:WAVeformATA?
The queried data is in binary format and I don't know how to display it.
If you have any example program that could do it very fast, please share it.
Many thanks in advance
Y3G (...if there is LTE)What scope are you using?
As Dennis said, you need to read the manual. It will tell you what the format of the data coming back is. I've seen some just spit back 16 bit data that you then have to convert somehow. Others will give you an actual double precision floating point. And some have additional data they send with the raw data.
There are only two ways to tell somebody thanks: Kudos and Marked Solutions

[PE9] noise or no sound when exporting
I'm putting together a video from a trip. After a while, my computer started getting slow and Premiere Elements almost instantly showed a memory error when opening my project. So I arranged a faster computer to borrow for a while, which solved the memory problem.
Now I want to share/produce/export my project as a movie, so I can watch it and write down things I want to change. Rendering as an avi results in an "unknown error", other formats seem to work fine apart from the sound. I either get a continuous noise or no sound at all. I literally tested every output possibility in PE9.
I assume it's not the project itself, because I did preliminary exports before which looked and sounded fine. The difference is: those exports where made on my own computer, the one that got to slow in the end. So it's not the footage used, everything sounds just fine in PE itself.
The new computer is brand new, with barely anything installed except for PE9, Windows, VLC and Chrome. Is it possible the computer lacks the proper audio encoder(s)? I thought those would be installed with PE9...
So in short:
- old computer exports movies perfectly fine, but when I open my project PE9 exits immediately, due to not enough memory. I simply can't open my project anymore.
- new computer can handle the load, but produces noise or silence instead of the sound.
I exported two very short clips, one in MPG and one in MP4, the export settings are in the filenames. Both clips are the same content-wise and you should hear a bit of Johnny Cash as the soundtrack. But you won't.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4832845/HD%20720p%2030.mpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4832845/iPod%20and%20iPhone%20-%20High%20Quality.mp4Sorry, it's been a while since I had the time to dive into PE9 again. I updated the audio drivers and installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. That seemed to solve the problem briefly, because when I exported a short bit of the project, I had the correct sound. When I tried it again a while later, it was the old noise again. Very weird...
I continued my project in a new project (because the first one seems to be too much for PE9 to handle) and when I export bits of the new project, everything is fine. So it's probably a file used in the first project that causes the mayhem. Maybe one of the mp3's I'm using, although they're all self ripped from my own cd collection.
Still weird that it renders ALL of the sound useless when exporting. Also, PE9 doesn't indicate file problems (as I've seen in the past, with the little yellow danger triangle in the bottom left corner). I guess I'll have to split the project up in several smaller projects and see if I can isolate the troublemaker that way.
I didn't have the time yet to figure out the video codec used, but all footage is from the same camera and the mp3's used are self ripped. The computer has now been updated to the max.
I did however start the first project in PE8 and continued with PE9 later, when I moved to a new computer. But that shouldn't cause my audio to be messed up, should it? Using any of the standard presets results in noise or silence. I've tried them all
Also, when I export the new project (which was started in PE9), it exports to avi just fine. When I try avi in the first project (started in PE8, continued in PE9), I get the "unknown" error and exporting to avi or wmv is not possible. -
How can I have parallel flows but only the first outcome will be used ?
A Parallel Gateway split can end with a Complex Gateway merge. You would generally use this when you want to execute all the outgoing paths in parallel but want to terminate active paths if certain conditions are met example: if 2 out of 3 paths have been completed, you might want to end the parallel scope and move forward.
I believe you are using 11g!
If so please use under Complex-merge bpmn:getGatewayInstanceAttribute('activationCount') =2 this .... this should work.
if 10g, then the available response should work out.
Thanks,

I need to capture ~20 scope traces per second (2500 pts per trace).
I have a TDS744A which is dong at best 1 trace per second with GPIB and LabView. I can go through a few cups of coffee before my data is collected....
Any recommednations on scopes which are capable?
Are any Tektronix scopes up to snuff? How are the LeCroy scopes in this regards?
Any experience or summaries are appreciated.

Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi Richard,
Alan from LeCroy Tech Support here...
The answer is yes - the Waverunner Xi series can transfer about 24 waveforms/sec when the scope is set to a 2500point acquisition in "RealTime" mode (which is the standard operating mode)
You can transfer a far higher rate using "Sequence Mode". In this mode, the scope saves multiple triggers to memory with extremely low deadtime. I find that I can transfer, for example, about 14 sequence mode acquisitions per second, with each acquisition including 10 triggers of 2500 points each, whic amounts to 140 triggers per second transferred.
The best mode to use will depend on your application. For example, if you are planning on averaging waveforms or performing some other analysis, you can do that on the scope and save alot of time. Or, if you want to save the waveforms on the scope, you can save about 30 waveforms/sec in RealTime mode.
Please give me a call at 800-553-2769 for more discussion!

Using Getting Started VI with HP54845 scope
I'm trying to run the supplied "Getting Started" IVI with the Agilent HP54845 scope that is included in the download package for the hp548xx device. The instrument input is GPIB::7::INSTR and the Initialize with Options portion of the subVI returns an OK when run. The series of VIs in the subVI "hp548xx Acq Wfm Edge Triggered" also return OK values up to the "Read Wfm" VI. I then get a timeout error (Error number BFFF0015). Am I using the wrong instrument handle and, if so, what is the correct handle. This is the default format when I create an input to this "Read Wfm" VI. The Plug & Play VIs work for this device and I am able to display scope traces in LabView when I use the supplied P&P VIs so I am able to talk to t
he device.Probably the most common reason for timeout (BFFF0015) in an oscilloscope read waveform is failed trigger event. Most likely the Getting Started VI uses edge triggering. Check the edge trigger level setting and verify that it is set to be within the range of your expected signal.

Z30i - does it make _any_ noise?
I am looking for a totallly (or as close aspossible) monitor with width 2560 and prferably 30" and 1600 high, so the z30i is an option. But I want a quiet monitor. So my question is:
Does the z30i make _any_ noise?
If it does, what kind of noise, and if known what cuases it?
BTW: I have sent this question to HP technical support from the web site and it was aknowledged 5 days ago, but haven't got any reply yet. Is this typical?
Thanks,
Yehouda HarpazHello Yehouda.
Welcome to the HP Forums. I understand you are wondering if the HP Z30i monitor produces noise. I will try my best to provide information on this.
I have personally worked on this monitor in the past, and others I know have as well. This monitor does not making any more noise than your average monitor. The monitors can produce noise sometimes are those with things like built-in speakers, or fans (for example).
Now, as an accessory, you can purchase with this monitor an LCD Speaker Bar. This might make a little extra noise if not taken care of. More information about this can be found in this monitor's quick specification page: HP Z30i 30-inch IPS Display
I hope I have answered your question. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Getting way too much noise ???
Hi! I'm working on a track with a few synth layers from my korg and other audio etc.. it sounds perfect in logic but like sh*t as mp3.. i tried turning normalize on and it just made it really quiet so i went to amplify it in audacity and it brought the noise back in.. without normalize its good volume but with noise and i also put adaptive limiters on a bunch of the tracks which didn't do much.. id REALLY appreciate if someone could suggest some solutions! either with getting rid of the noise for when i bounce it, or a good way to raise the volume of the track when i bounce it with normalization on, mostly since i can turn up the volume on my computer and theres no noise but amplyifing it in audacity produces noise.. probably cause it messes with the frequencies or whatever i dont know haha but ok yeah thank you for reading! please help!!
Ecibob,
1. You can post images (PNG or JPEG) directly to your thread here. Many people cannot or will not follow external links to look at images. Use the Insert/edit image button in the toolbar at the top of the edit window.
2. There are on-line tutorials which will help you get started with LabVIEW.
3. What part of those signals is noise and what is real force? Turbulence, vibrations in the device, and other things could make all of this real. How are these signals measured? Do you have any kind of signal which can be used to synchronize with the motion of the wing?

So i just bought a presonus firebox earlier and hooked it up. love it already. but im still getting some of the line-noise thats been bugging me when i try to record my electric guitar directly in. I've uploaded this file, and im having a hard time diagnosing where the noise is coming from, whether its DC hum or anything else that could produce noise. ive got no CRT's in the room, or flourescant lights, or anything the room that would produce noise like this.
here's the file, and a walkthrough of what im doing throughout the test.
http://www.bedrock-studios.com/noise.mp3
:00 - :07 idling, volume knob on guitar at full (noiseless pickups), 1/4" line from guitar to presonus firebox input, presonus preamp boosted to 0 db.
:07 - :13 plucked E string
:14 - :17 cracked down preamp gain knob on firebox to -infinity (noise still present)
:23 disconnected 1/4" line from guitar (noise still present)
:30 disconnected 1/4" line from instrument input on firebox (noise still present, barely)
:37 - :39 cranking UP preamp gain knob on firebox (noise returns)
so its like the noise is inside the unit, and has nothing to do with line interference from my guitar.... is this what DC hum sounds like? could it be bad wiring in my wall outlet? or a bad presonus firebox? or is this just to be expected under these circumstances?
am i doing something wrong?
many thanks for any help
chrisI think the guitar amp simulator is the thing generating the noise. Using that kind of plug to try to demonstrate a noise problem isn't the way to go. You want to record the cleanest signal path to determine how much noise may or may not be present.
Do another test: here you're going to make 4 separate recordings.
First, take the dist. plug and any other plugs out of the signal chain (bypass or remove them). Don't plug the guitar in. Turn the firebox's gain all the way down. Record a few seconds of that sound (which is nothing. That's right, you're going to record nothing).
Next, turn the firebox's preamp up to zero dB. Record a few seconds of that.
Next, plug the guitar in, preamp = all the way down. Record a few seconds.
Then turn the preamp up to zero dB (guitar still plugged in byt don't play it). Record a few seconds of that.
Now you have four recordings. Space them apart in your arrange page by a second or so. Then use the glue tool to put it all together.
Next, go into the sample editor and use the "change gain" function to boost the level of your audio file by 12 dB and post that. -
HP Envy 7 1181nr knocking noise problems
Hi everyone,
I'm owner of HP Envy 17 1181nr. I'm having a very strange and nasty noise coming out of my laptop.
It's not a constant noise, or something that I could reproduce for now.
Sometimes (more often) is sounds like a short but loud knocks. It may be a single knock, and series of several.
Sometimes it's even worse, and sounds like something is scratching a metal.
HP is ignoring my reports and just sending me back the laptop on each mail in service. It's not even helping to ask them to recheck everything several times or contact me back. They are just sending it back to me.
I tried to run different test for the hard drive. All of them are showing me that everything is fine with drive. Interestingly I never header that noise while I was running the tests.
But I have made some observations. I never heard it while I was working on Linux. I never heard it while I was running any HDD drive tests.
But it happens more or less frequently when I work on Windows. I could hear it several time just at the time when Win7 starts loading showing it's animation.
I cannot make any conclusions, and asking for help from anyone.
I will be happy to get at least some suggestions on what can I do to make this problem reproducible or how I can find out the cause.
Don't want to send it to HP service right now, since I feel that this will not give any result. Why HP is ignoring everything that I was saying?!?! Does it happen only to me?Yes, you are absolutly right. It does not sound to be good at all.
I made some tests these days. What I can say that the fact the music of movies are played from the HDD doesnot effect the overal number of produced noises. At least I could not find a huge difference in number of this specific knocks.
I have also opened the HDD cover and got the disk outside of the laptop, so I could hear clearly whether this noise was coming from the HDD. And it was. I could exactly catch up to 3 sequential knocks, and I could hear that they were coming from the HDD.
So in fact my question is whether this is not something that is covered by the warranty.
In my point of view this is completely abnormal for the HDD to produce such sounds. I even cannot rely on it.
Another point is that I afraid of sending it directly to the service without giving them a way to reproduce it. Don't know what to do.
Any suggestions?
