USBs dead on start up

I have an intermittent problem that the USB socket does not work reliably. The only way to fire it up is to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in, this is a bit of a pain.
Any ideas?

Just curious, but is this problem with one certain device?

  • K8N Neo D-bracket right usb dead after restart?

I have k8n Neo fsr. When I restart, right usb on d-bracket is dead, until i unplug and replug device, then it functions. Why? Faulty D-Bracket or...?

I used speedfan 4.20 a bit and deinstalled it some time ago, haven't tried 4.21. I used  only left port on d-bracket and it was ok (it it the port away from leds). Recently I started using both, and I have problems with the port closer to leds, the other one's fine. Drivers are 5.10.
PS I tried shutting down ups and restarting, no change. I will try to unplug power cable, but I doubt that will help...

  • Is my USB dead? Any chances of revival???

Hey Guys, first of all...I wish all a good year to start off...
My USB on my mobo(Intel 865PE Neo2) seems dead all of a sudden . It can't detects any device I plug in. I tried pluging in my USB KB, the led on the KB lits and blinks twice and nothing happens. Tried uninstalling drivers and reinstalling, it still fails me :(. Not even the D-bracket is working even though the 4 led are working. Tried my USB mouse and Keyboard on another PC, It worked perfectly. So i would appreciate if anyone  master of revival can advise me on this...whether my USB is beyond hope of revival...
    10s

Do you have the front USB ports on your case? The reason I am asking is if you unplug all the external USB ports from the board, do the on board sockets work? If not USB is dead. Play taps and call it game over..
If they start working then, plug your D-bracket back in and see if they still work, if not then the problem is in your D-bracket. If you have case mounted USB ports, then plug them back in at this point, and verify that they still work.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Display and USB dead, but Mac Pro still running?

    Hi,
Two days ago, my 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008) became unusable. It displays the Apple logo on grey background during startup then after a while, the rolling "circle" freezes, yet the Mac keeps booting as we can still hear the hard drive running. Sometimes, the screen blinks once or twice just before freezing, but nothing more.
After a while, the Mac finishes booting up: its name appears in the "Shared" section of a Finder window seen from another Mac. However, I can't connect to it via "Share Screen": error message saying the Mac is unreachable. The keyboard doesn't work either cause I can't blindly use it --not even to try to restart the Mac (CTRL-EJECT + R).
If I plug my iPhone, the battery starts charging but no synchro --I don't hear the faintest noise from the hard drive, meaning iTunes doesn't launch.
However, I can connect to the Mac thru file sharing; once identified, all volumes appear and can be mounted and browsed normally. I also can connect thru a SSH session and pilot the Mac via the Terminal. Note: the "shutdown -r now" command seems to work as the shutting down message appears with three beeps and the Mac disappears from the Shared list mentioned above, but it doesn't turns off "physically"; fans and hard drives keep running and the front LED remains on... forever.
All this makes me think there's something really wrong with the I/O management (except network but is it really I/O?): no display, no mouse, no keyboard (no USB).
Of course, I zapped the PRAM, removed the extra RAM I bought two months ago, I also removed one by one the two internal hard drives and checked all possible connections. The same problem keeps happening during startup, even with only the system DVD in the superdrive --without any hard drive connected, just to be sure.
For information, the very first problem happened while playing a game on Windows via Boot Camp: the screen froze but music and sound kept running. After three restarts --still under Boot Camp-- and a freeze a few minutes after I was back in the game, I gave up and restarted under Mac OS X. The Mac worked normally for about an hour, then crashed while I was browsing my music in iTunes. The next crashes were happening faster after each restart. And now, the Mac won't even boot normally.
Here's my story. If one of you guys have an idea of what could be happening on my Mac Pro, I'll be very glad to read it. I'm not really keen to send it to maintenance for several reasons, one being that after not even two years of age I still consider it a "recent" computer, the other being that with the holiday season coming up, I wouldn't like to see it go away for weeks!
One more thing I'm a freelance graphic designer, I've been working with Macs for more than 20 years and I take good care of my machines.
    Thank you for reading.

    Hi,
Well, I now can say that that's also what happened to my 8800 GT.
I finally received the ATI Radeon HD 4870 and after I've installed it, I was able to boot the Mac Pro on Windows (I got the PC version of the card so it needs to be flashed before it can be used with Mac OS X) and this time, everything went fine; I tried the games I've had problems with earlier and they all ran perfectly.
I then successfully flashed the Radeon so it's now compatible with Mac OS X and Windows, but I still have a power problem: the card is sold with two Molex-to-PCIe cables whereas only micro PCI-e connectors are available on the Mac Pro. There's the option to use the SuperDrive's Molex connectors but there're only two of them and four are supposedly required (see note below) to sufficiently power the card. This means the picture is scrambled in Mac OS X and when trying to boot on Windows, a blinking power error message is displayed onscreen and booting stops.
Note: in the Radeon manual, it says (with nice illustrations) that the card requires two full PCI-e cables and that Molex-to-PCI-e adapters aren't supported, *although the card is sold with two of these unsupported cables ONLY!* However, before flashing the card, Windows booted successfully with those two cables so I don't quite understand the logic behind all this...
Anyway, I've ordered the missing full PCI-e cable (I already have the one that came with the NVidia card) on eBay (amazingly, this cable is impossible to find in France!) When I receive it, I'll post a final message in this thread to let you know if my problems are now solved.
    Thanks for reading =)

  • PowerMac G4 533 Dead - No Start-Up

My trusty dual-processor 533 PowerMac desktop (running OSX Tiger) died while asleep. It won't start from the power button on the front of the desktop or from the Apple studio display. No light comes on, no chime, nothing. The machine is stone cold dead.
Tried the usual: changed the internal battery, reset the PMU. Also, tried to start without the battery, changed the power supply cable, checked the internal connections. Nothing. Not a flicker of life.
Not sure what to do next. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Could be the power supply died. But try *Resetting the Logic Board*
Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
    Note:
This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to
check the computer’s time/date and other system parameter settings

  • Trying to load windows onto new hard drive from usb, stuck at "starting windows" screen

So I am actually down grading from windows 8 pro to windows 7 pro both 64. I was finally able to get the comp to not only recongize, but load from the usb. My problem is that when it does start up, I get stuck at the "Starting windows" screen. I was wondering maybe I need to format a patition first? It is a new warranty hard drive from Lenovo. (Kind of funny how that send only cds for a laptop that has no cd drive) I looked into formatting from a usb, have had some trouble finding a reliable way.....thanks
    Solved!

    Hi davefromsb,
Windows 8 computers come with a "UEFI" bios and therefore will come with "Secure Boot" as well as "UEFI Only" booting enabled. Disable secure boot if you haven't already, and switch the booting method to "Legacy Only". The problem is most likely that the Windows 7 image that was burned to the USB stick was burned using a MBR partition scheme instead of a GPT one. Hope this helps.

  • Upgraded to osx lion via bootable USB stick but start up now just hangs on the grey apple screen

Hi.  I've just recently upgraded from snow leopard to osx lion 10.7.3 on my laptop and it works perfectly! However I then tried installing on desktop and problems......
    1. I got the 'the error can't install message' so after researching' I made a bootable USB stick with lion on it.
    2. Installed on start up from bootable USB stick, no problems their.
    3. Restarted and it just hangs in the grey apple screen.
I've reset the PRAM, started in safe mode, fixed disk permission etc, Even done this (http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070204093925888).
I'm going to leave the grey screen over night to see if it does start up, but then we have the problem of an extremely slow start up.
So.... I am posting this to find out if anyone else has this problem and fixed it without having to do a full clean install as some data like email lists etc I never backed up (I know stupid).
Hope someone can help as i am lost on what else to try.
    HELP!?!?!?
    Dan.

    Update 01.03.12
Computer is starting now but.... It takes 10 minutes and that is without my sound card, hardware and external hard drives plugged in, gonna test that now.
Are their and fixes for slow start ups?

  • 5800 USB dead

My 5800s USB connection seems to be totally dead. I get no beep on the phone when I plug in the USB cable (tried on 3 different PCs) and I get no prompt asking what mode I want to use, i.e. PC Suite Mode, Mass Storage etc.
The phone does not appear under "Devices and Printers" in Windows 7, nor does it appear under "Device Manager".
So there is zero connectivity between the phone and the computer.
I've ordered a new micro USB cable from ebay to see if it helps, but the one I am using now doesn't look damaged in any way.
     Any suggestions?

On the chance that it is software related, try a reset. Read how to here:  /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=153614&query.id=2137397#M153614

  • No usb keyboard at start up- is it a sign?

    Hello
I spent a couple of scary hours last night starting and restarting my mac. It started to the login screen as expected but I could not log in as my USB keyboard did not work/ was not being recognized.
I unplugged all other USB devices and still no change after multiple restarts.  I then went and got my wireless keyboard and that too would not register.  ( all the while my wireless track pad was working fine I should note). The compter seemed to randomly attempt to pair with the a key board and only about 1 in 5 times did it even see anything.  Each time it would fail to pair.  Eventually after many many attempts to get this to work I was finally prompted to enter a code to pair the key board and was successfull at logging in.
So given the above experience I am anxious that I am operating on a thin thread.  I have run disk utility (couldn't think of anything else) and it shows the disk as being fine.  Are there other items or ways to check the health of my iMac (2010).
I would appreciate any suggestions to help confirm the health / sickness of my machine as I have been a mac user for a looong time and this did not feel normal.

That was a long response - just remembered I had a "thank you" owing.   The USB keyboard is back working.  It seem to be very tempermental if I connect to one specific USB port.  It is so infrequent that I cannot tell whether it is the cause or not - just a hunch.  I am not sure of anyway to test the "temperment" of a specific port.  Let me know if you have any ideas.
In any case thanks for helping me out.

  • Usb dead, no power to usb

The problem is fixed, but its worthwhile passing on.
    Compaq CQ1251AN 64bit Windows 7 Desktop.
Recently installed via USB an external Hard Drive (separate power supply)
On boot, mouse dead, no red light under mouse, keyboard dead, could not sign on at sign on display.
Fix.... Used 4 port USB extension with separate power to boot and sign on to PC (kbd and mouse now active)
Then deactivate/activate USB devices via control panel.
    All fixed.

    Hello davebh,
So it seems like the USB ports were not receiving power from the motherboard.
The USB extension that you used I presume was connected via PCI slot? Maybe a link to the product you used?
Either way glad to hear you found a solution to your problem.

  • USB Dead All of a Sudden

    Here is the issue:
Had two Epox boards before getting extremely upset of poor service and bought an MSI K7N2 motherboard.  Worked fine until just the other night, when ALL USB ports quit working.  Also, the onboard ehternet doesn't work.  I'm getting pretty upset with the problems I've been having with any board I seem to buy.
Have tried CMOS settings to make sure everything is correct, and it is.  Have reinstalled Windows XP Pro, and still does not take care of the problem.  Have tried other USB devices, and still does not read ANY of them, though they still operate on other PC's.  Have installed Service Pack 1, and still does not turn USB devices on.  Ethernet lights will NOT light up.  Computers are unrecognized on a network and doesn't recognize an onboard ethernet card.
Please help.  I have dealt with tech support on the ECS and Epox website, and both were extremely horrible.  If anyone has suggestions, I'm open to try just about anything right now.
    Mike

I actually did nothing to the motherboard.  I just rebooted and nothing worked.  It was really strange because I was reinstalling Windows XP Pro (service pack 1 messed up...again) and when I rebooted the machine, absolutely no USB support.  I've contacted tech support at MSI, and they are recommending me to go to the BIOS to make sure everything is set ok.  There were no BIOS changes made though, unless the BIOS decided to change itself.  One other person PM'd me and said to update the BIOS, since he was having problems and when he updated the BIOS, it worked fine.  However, I'm sure that is not going to be the case since everything worked fine before that fatal reboot.
Also, for the reply posted earlier, the D-Bracket was removed and there are still problems with USB ports.
