Use a Reference to get Other References

Hi -
I just wrote a piece of code that grabs a reference to any object within a tab control. This will be quite useful for us so that we only have to pass one reference down to SubVIs instead of many, many references.
However, I have never really used references and property nodes in this way, so I want to get feedback on my code from people who have experience or insight with this so I can avoid any potential pitfalls later.
I attached the SubVI that does this with a top level VI to try it out. Open Tab Control References.vi and then in the Control Name control type in the control name you want. Then, set the value for that data type and it will update the value to that object on Tab1 of the tab control. Note it is coded to only work on Tab1, as is.
I think the code works, but I am mainly looking for advice on pitfalls I might encounter later or reasons why it may not work reliably.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my code!
I should have been clearer because the "Tab Control References.vi" was just an example so it doesn't matter if not all the data types are accounted for. I was simply trying to get the idea accross. I am more interested in knowing if there are problems with "Get Reference in Tab Control.vi".
As for the enum or listbox to select existing controls: I think that is a great idea and will research that more!

  • Get Other Data

    Hi All,
    I have a query and need to be used in XLReporter as Get Other Data:
    Select T0.DocNum, case (Select Top 1 T1.basetype from PCH1 T1 Where T0.DocEntry=T1.DocEntry) when 20 then (Select Top 1 T3.BaseRef from PCH1 T1 LEFT JOIN OPDN T2 ON T1.BaseRef=T2.DocNum INNER JOIN PDN1 T3 ON T2.DocEntry=T3.DocEntry Where T0.DocEntry=T1.DocEntry) else (Select Top 1 T1.BaseRef from PCH1 T1 Where T1.BaseType=22 and T0.DocEntry=T1.DocEntry) end As 'PO No.'
    FROM OPCH T0 where t0.docentry in (Select Top 1 T4.DocEntry From PCH1 T4 LEFT JOIN OPDN T5 ON T4.BaseRef=T5.DocNum INNER JOIN PDN1 T6 ON T5.DocEntry=T6.DocEntry Where T0.DocEntry=T4.DocEntry and T4.BASETYPE=20 AND T6.BaseType=22 AND T6.BaseRef IS NOT NULL) OR t0.docentry in (Select Top 1 T7.DocEntry From PCH1 T7 Where T0.DocEntry=T7.DocEntry AND T7.BaseType=22 AND T7.BaseRef IS NOT NULL)
    The query running ok in SQL and query generator, but i have problem to translate it into the fields in Get Other Data function (field Table, Fields, Condition).
    Is there anyone who knows how i should separate the query in those 3 fields.
    Any ideas or suggestion will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    The Get Other Data function in XLR is rather limited and for one you can't have multiple tables with joins.
    Your query seems way too complicated for the Get Other Data function. What I would do to get past this problem is to create a view in SQL and then query the view with the Get Other Data function.

  • Condition field in XL Reporter Get Other Data function

    I want to use the XL Reporter "Get Other Data" function to get data from a file not in the current Business Partner dimension  BPA.  Using the SalesPerson code SlpCode, I want to get the SalesPerson Name, SlpName. What is the value for the condition field to restrict the retrieval to just the one record that matches the SlpCode in the BPA dimension?  I've tried ocrd.SlpCode=oslp.SlpCode.  I've tried SlpCode=oslp.SlpCode. But I either get all the names in the Salesperson file or I get some type of syntax error.

    Jim,
    When you say I should be able to pass a parameter, do you mean while using the XLR "Get other data" function?  I thought that's what I was doing when I filled out the Get other data screen with the userid, password, then I specified the OSLP table, requesting SlpName in the Fields section, and then in Condition, I specified OCRD.SlpCode = OSLP.SlpCode.   When the report ran, I got a "#ixGetData error: The multi-part identifier "OCRD.SlpCode" could not be bound".   I tried substituting the BPA dimension qualifier, ie: BPA.SlpCode, but got the same error.
    If I removed the initial qualifier in the Condition field, ie: SlpCode = OCRD.SlpCode, when I ran the report I got ALL Salespersons names, not just the one that matched the SlpCode field on the current Business Partner line.

  • How do get an indicator to appear when using control references

    Hi, can anyone help with the following?
    I've just managed to resolve the problem of getting indicators of a sub VI to appear on the front panel of my main VI and remain active. This was done by using control references. Basically, I created a reference for the control on the front panel of the main VI. I then dragged the reference in the block diagram of the main VI to the front panel of the subVI to obtain a Control Refnum. Then in the block diagram of the subVI I created a property node and linked the indicator and control refnum to it. Then I wired the subVI's connector pane to the control refnums in the subVi front panel. Finally, I copied the subVI icon into the mainVI block diagram
    and wired the references to the relevent renum terminals of the subVI connector pane. However, I'm still having a problem with one of the indicators, which I've called 'time limit reached?'. When the VI has reached the end of the run this indicator in the subVI changes from the word 'No' (surrounded by a red box) to 'Yes' (surrounded by a green box). In the sub VI this was done by using a comparison function and linking the visible property node to the 'time limit reached?' true/false boolean. I would like the same to happen on the front panel of my main VI. In this case where should I put my property node and control refnum? I'm unable to link a control refnum to the current visible property node. When I create a visible property node which can be joined to a control refnum then I don't have the option to link it to the true/false boolean. Any suggestions? I have written a small VI which demonstrates the problem if need be.
    Thanks, Adrian
    [email protected]

    I would suggest to use a customized boolean instead of making it visible/invisible, just take a boolean, change boolean text from TRUE/FALSE to YES/NO and change also diferent cases colors, this way, you don't need to play with property nodes. If this can't be done for any reason, using a local / global variable is the only solution that comes to my mind.
    Hope this helps

  • Currency Translation Using 'Time Reference'

    Hey Experts,
    Quick question.
    Has anybody had experience performing the planning function 'Currency Translation' <b>BUT</b> using the 'Time Reference' field.
    My goal is to have it translate the currency based on Fiscal year/period, using the fiscal 'year/period END' to determine the translation date.
    However in the paremeter group for currency translation, when I click on the 'Time reference' Drop-down button to select, it's blank, and give me no choices to pick anything. Have I missed something here? Are there any other prior steps I've ignored?
    I already have the fiscal year/period characteristic defined on my level.. and I've defined my 'Targ.Curr' as USD.
    I can't find much documantation except for the basic help button, but that doesn't really say much.
    Any advice..?
    Thank All.

    Hi,
    If I understand you correctly, am I then to assume using the Fiscal year/Period '0FISCPER' will not work. The F1 help say it should.
    And are you saying if I use Fiscal year '0FISCYEAR' and/or Posting Period '0FISCPER3' instead, it should work by giving me the option of choosing the start or end of these two fields when I click on the drop-down of the Time Reference??
    The way I have this defined is as follows.
    At the level I have both:
    Fiscal year/Period '0FISCPER' -> 001/2006 to 012/2007.
    Fiscal year '0FISCYEAR' -> 2006 to 2007.
    In my Paramter Group I have the following definition:
    Target Key Figure:  Value in Object currency
    Source Key Figure:  Value in CO Currency
    Exch.Rate: 001P
    Char.Target.Crcy: Currency
    Curr,Date:  Is currenctly Flagged, but will remove it once I have the Time Reference field working.
    At the Planning area, I have a characteristic relationship defined as a derivation using 'Type' reference data, whereby the Fiscal year (0FISCYEAR) is referenced from the Fiscal year/Period (0FISCPER), and the Posting period (0FISCPER3) also references the Fiscal year/Period (0FISCPER) that are currently stored in my transactional cube.
    Based on the above, I still don't get anything to choose from when I click on the drop-down for the 'Time Reference' field in the currency translation.
    If you could perhaps do some screen dumps of the level you defined, characteristic relationship, as well as how u defined the parameter group, that may help.
    You can attach email it to  '[email protected]'.
    Sorry for the confusion, but I think I'm missing something obvious and simple here..!!
    Thanks

  • How to set the value of an array element (not the complete array) by using a reference?

    My situation is that I have an array of clusters on the front panel. Each element is used for a particular test setup, so if the array size is three, it means we have three identical test setups that can be used. The cluster contains two string controls and a button: 'device ID' string, 'start' button and 'status' string.
    In order to keep the diagrams simple, I would like to use a reference to the array as input into a subvi. This subvi will then modify a particular element in the array (i.e. set the 'status' string).
    The first problem I encounter is that I can not select an array element to write to by using the reference. I have tried setting the 'Selection s
    tart[]' and 'Selection size[]' properties and then querying the 'Array element' to get the proper element.
    If I do this, the VI always seems to write to the element which the user has selected (i.e. the element that contains the cursor) instead of the one I am trying to select. I also have not found any other possible use for the 'Selection' properties, so I wonder if I am doing something wrong.
    Of course I can use the 'value' property to get all elements, and then use the replace array element with an index value, but this defeats the purpose of leaving all other elements untouched.
    I had hoped to use this method specifically to avoid overwriting other array elements (such as happens with the replace array element) because the user might be modifying the second array element while I want to modify the first.
    My current solution is to split the array into two arrays: one control and one indicator (I guess that's really how it should be done ;-) but I'd still like to know ho
    w to change a single element in an array without affecting the others by using a reference in case I can use it elsewhere.

    >
    It isn't possible to get a reference to a particular element within an
    array. There is only one reference to the one control that represents
    all elements in the array.
    While it may seem better to use references to update
    an element within
    an array, it shouldn't really be necessary, and it can also lead to
    race conditions. If you write to an element that has the
    possibility of the user changing, whether you write with a local, a
    reference, or any other means, there is a race condition between the
    diagram and the user. LV will help with this to a certain extent,
    especially for controls that take awhile to edit like ones that use
    the keyboard. In these cases, if the user has already started entering
    text, it will not be overwritten by the new value unless the key focus
    is taken away from the control first. It is similar when moving a slider
    or other value changes using the mouse. LV will write to the other values,
    but will not rip the slider out of the user's hand.
    To completely avoid race conditions, you can split the array into user
    fields and indicators that are located underneath them. Or, if some
    controls act as both, you can do like Excel. You don't directly type
    into the cell. You choose w
    hich cell to edit, but you modify another
    location. When the edit is completed, it is incorporated into the
    display so that it is never lost.

    Neeraj -
    The Portal framework code (including PortalAppflowHelper) uses ejb
    references to find the PortalManager (and other EJBs) from servlets and
    taglibs; that is what is signified by the java:comp/env/... name.
    Since you built your webapp from scratch (instead of using the portal
    wizard), you will need to make sure the you have the appropriate
    <ejb-ref> entries in your web.xml, and the corresponding
    <ejb-reference-description> entries in your weblogic.xml. By default,
    you will need at least mappings for:
    - ejb/PortalManager
    - ejb/UserManager
    - ejb/GroupManager
    - ejb/PipelineExecutor
    - ejb/EventService
    See either the resulting webapp from using the portal wizard or
    BEA_HOME/weblogic700/samples/portal/sampleportalDomain/beaApps/sampleportal/sampleportal/WEB-INF
    for example syntax.

    All I need to find out is how do I specify the reference of that service in my web dynpro application.

    I have exactly the SAME problem
    I tried putting PORTAL:sap.com/<your service name> in the sharing reference as well as in the service reference. But I still get the error during deployment.
    I also tried putting it in "service referece". Same error.
    I also tried just sap.com/<your service name>. But it didn't help either.

  • Is there any downside to using a reference type library if I use Time Capsule and will do file management only from within Aperture?

    Have done a lot of reading to get prepared to convert to Aperture 3 and have this question regarding setting up my library type.
    I'm not a professional -just a heavy user hobbyist.
    It appears that the major factors in using reference style is to backup the images with Time Capsule and always do moves or deletes from within the Aperture application.
    If my architecture matters here's what I have that may be involved in photo management and editing:
    iMac (latest 27" high power version with lots of memory)
    Internal 2TB HD where the library is stored
    External (FireWire) 2TB HD where the images are stored
    External (FireWire) 6TB HD backup drive
    In the future an iPad for remote work on images (when/if available) and a Mac laptop (for same remote use)
    I see major downside issues to letting the library manage my files - such as inaccessibility (or awkward accessibility) to the images for other programs, and performance issues when the library gets large (thousands of images or 100+ gb in size)
    The chief complaints I've seen regarding using a reference mode is the broken link issues created if file management is done outside of Aperture (adds, deletes, moves of files) and the inability to use the Vault function for backup.
    One feature that I imagine I'd like to have is maximum integration with Final Cut Pro X and that's one area I haven't seen much on and would be interested to hear about if that integration is affected with the choice of managed vs referenced library types. (I like to produce film clips that are combinations of pics and video and want to be set up so that is done in the easiest fashion when working in FCP X)
    I'm sure I've not seen all sides of this issue and would like to see some discussion around this question.
    Thanks to everyone contributing!

    Goody, Goody, you hit a few of my favorite subjects! Herewith some comments, with the usual caveats - true to the best of my knowledge and experience, others may have different results, YMMV, and I could be wrong.
    I run Aperture on two machines:
    -- 2007 Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Xeon, 21 GB of RAM, a 5770 GPU, and multiple HD. I have about 11,000 images, taking up 150 GB. (Many are 100 MB TIFF, scanned slides)
    -- 2006 Mac Book Pro with 1 2.0 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD.
    Two very different machines.
    -- Aperture Libraries are all the same - Managed or Referenced. If Managed, then the Master image files are inside the Package, if Referenced, they are outside, and you can have any combination you want. Managed is easier, but Referenced is not hard if you are the least bit careful.
    -- While the sheer size of an Aperture Library is not a big issue, the location on disk of the different components can have a tremendous impact on performance.
    -- Solid State Drives (SSD) read and write faster than regular Hard Disks (HD) and, what is more important, empty HD read and write much faster than full HD.
    -- Aperture speed requires a combination of RAM, CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, and disk speed. The more RAM you have, the less paging you will see. With enough RAM, the next bottle neck is CPU (speed and cores) and GPU speed. But even then you will still have to fetch an image (longer if you pull the full resolution Master, read and rewrite the Version file, and update the Preview and Thumbs.
    So what works?
    -- RAM, RAM, and more RAM. 4 GB will work, but you will page a bit. 8 GB is much faster. On my old MacPro the sweet spot was about 16 GB of RAM.
    -- Keep your Library on your fastest (usually internal) drive. Keep that disk as unloaded as possible. How do you keep it unloaded? Either buy BIG, 1 TB+ or move your Masters off onto another disk. The good news here is that as Master files are written only once and never rewritten, speed of this disk, as opposed to the disk that holds the Library, is not important. There is a one second pause as the Master is read into memory and, if you have enough RAM, that is it - the Master will never be paged out. If, on the other hand, you do not have enough RAM, and you do a lot of adjusting at full resolution, then the speed of the disk that holds your Masters will become very important due to paging.
    -- I found that I picked up a tiny bit of speed by keeping the Masters on a dedicated disk. Thus, in your configuration, if you can dedicate that 2 TB FW HD to your Masters, you should see very nice performance.
    Final notes on backups and archives:
    -- One conventional wisdom is that you should make an archive copy of every image file before or as you load them into your system. (Aperture in this case.) This archive is then never touched or deleted.
    -- An alternative approach is that you do not keep such an archive, but only the images that you have in your Aperture Library. And when you delete from the Library, you no longer keep a copy anywhere.
    I do the following:
    -- Card to Aperture. Card is then kept at least 24 hours until all of my backups have run. (I use three - Time Machine, Clone, and off site.)
    -- I do not keep archive copies. If I decide to delete a file, my only recourse is to recover it from Time Machine during the six month cycle of my Time Machine backups. Thereafter, it is lost.
    There are merits to both approaches.
    Hope this is clear, correct, and responsive to your needs.

  • What is use of Reference object in BW

    Hi All,
    I have a small doubt about use of Reference object.Since reference object uses same database table of referenced object and also we can not load data in this.Only loaded data in Referenced object will be available in newly created reference object.
    Also if we create more than 2 objects referencing the same object and used them in InfoProvider then what is use of these objects in that infoprovider whether they have same data and also all properties.
    For example if we have created two objects u2018Sender Cost Centeru2019 and u2018Receiver Cost centeru2019 referencing the same object u2018Cost Centeru2019 and used them in an InfoCube.
    Then what is use of these objects whethet they are refering same database table of u2018Cost Centeru2019.And how we can differentiate them during Reporting.
    Regards
    Vinay

    consider below table:
    cost center (master data table):
    Cost SID, Center name, Other details
    1 ..., xyz....., bla bla
    2 ..., abc....., bla bla
    Purchase Order Header Table (transcation table)
    PONumber, Sender CostCntr, RecevierCostCntr, Other details.
    101, 1, 2, xxxxxx
    102, 2, 1, yyyyy
    in cube, u've SIDs for MD... so when u read the details for say PONo 101, u pick sender SID & receiver SID & read details from master data table...
    other example:
    u r working somewhere.. u have employee ID & ur other details like name, address... all these get store in 0employee master data..
    when in HR module ur salary is generated, salary module will hold only ur employee ID.. but from ur ID other details u can get.. rite?
    same way leave module will have ur Id.. & it can get details bout ur leave & address...
    both is true for ur manager.. but when ur leave is to be approved.. ur manager ID is required...when ur manager apply for leave his managerID is used.. all this get store in same leave module..

  • How can i use class reference from an array effeciently?

    Hi,
    I made some test here with getting a class reference from an array and using the reference's methods or variables.
    Basically arrayEx is a container of type Array and it contains the Person's class instance in it. Num is a number extracted from the Person's instance
    Example #1----Strongly typed
    Var reference:Person;
    Var num:int;
    //Assignation
    reference=arrayEx[0];-----IT IS SLOW HERE
    //Use
    num=reference.number --- IT IS FAST HERE
    Example #2---Not typed
    Var reference:*;
    Var num:int;
    //Assignation
    reference=arrayEx[0]; ---- IT IS FAST HERE
    //Use
    num=reference.number ---IT IS SLOW HERE
    No matter what i change in both code like casting Person on arrayEx, i cant seem to make them work both fast at the same time
    If someone knows how, please tell me,
    Dominik

  • Why to use EJB Reference

    hi all,
    when i have an enterprise application with a session bean and a webapp,
    i can access the session bean either over an ejb-reference in the webapp or directly access the jndi entry. what is the advantage of using ejb references? here an example of what i mean (both from within a webapp):
    ctx.lookup("myBean"); // without ejb ref
    ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/myRef"); // with ejb ref
    I get back the same, so whats the difference?
    rgds

    With ejb-reference a container optimizes access to collocated beans. For example, say you have a deployment where beans A and B are both replicated in two different containers, for performance and/or availability reasons. For optimal use every instance of A in container would use instances of B also in container one. Likewise for container two. An EJB container can enforce this locality constraint using ejb-links, but not always using direct JNDI names.

  • Deplyment error while using service reference

    I'm facing similar error where I get the following error when i try to run the application.
    Following error i get when i try to deploy

    The things I have done so far:
    1. Deployed the custom library and refered in library references. Its the same name as it is Visual Admin
    2. Added Cache API Jar file as external Jar file; added the Sharing reference and also all the steps mentioned in the following link:
    Webdynpro DC and J2EE DC
    3. The DC builds properly but fails at deployment
    My question is there any way that I can manually start the service.
    I find the application in Server >> Services >> Deploy is with invalid kind of symbol (neither blue checked symbol / red cross symbol). How do I restore the application
    I using ICacheServices in my code using Sharing references
    like (ICacheService)WDPortalUtils.getServiceReferences("com.sap.compatibility50.cache.cache"). is this right
    Please let me know
    Thanks in advance

  • Ejb-link is still required when using local references?

    Hi!
    In BEA's link (http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/ejb/DDreference-ejb-jar.html#1114738) there is the following comment for weblogic-ejb-jar.xml element 'jndi-name':
    "Assigning a JNDI name to a bean is not recommended. Global JNDI names generate heavy multicast traffic during clustered server startup. See Using EJB Links for the better practice."
    Since we're using local references (local-jndi-name) to access our ejbs instead of remote references, is this still recommendation still pertinent?
    Thanks
    Christianne

    It is enough if you add the ejb-ref & ejb-link in the session bean. The
    session will look up relative to java:comp/env
    The following doc shows an example of accessing an ejb from a web app using
    ejb-link.
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/webapp/components.html#146848
    --Sathish
    <Christianne Carvalho> wrote in message news:[email protected]..
    I'm not getting very well how the ejb-link is used. In my case I have
    entity beans that are referenced in session beans.
    In my entity beans I have the following XDoclet tag.
    * @ejb.bean
    * name="ProductDescription"
    * display-name="ProductDescription"
    * jndi-name="ejb/ProductDescription"
    * local-jndi-name="ejb/ProductDescriptionLocal"
    * view-type="local"
    * type="CMP"
    In my session bean I'm currently getting the reference for the entity bean
    using the following code:
    productDescriptionLocalHome=(ProductDescriptionLocalHome)
    lookupLocalHome(ProductDescriptionLocalHome.JNDI_NAME);
    If I add the following XDoclet tag to my session bean, in ejb-jar.xml a
    <ejb-link> is created inside <ejb-local_ref> tag.
    * @ejb.ejb-ref ejb-name="ProductDescription" view-type="local"
    Considering the info above:
    1) In the entity bean, is there any extra tag to define the ejb-link or is
    the ejb-link only defined in the session bean?
    2) Re session bean, only adding the @ejb-ref xdoclet tag is enough for
    using the ejb-link or do I also have to change my lookup? If I do, what do
    I have to search for in the lookup?
    Thanks!

  • Using control reference with a Sub-vi over a TCP VI Server connection

    I tried to use a Call by Reference Node to run a sub-vi on a remote PC through a TCP VI Server. An output of the sub-vi is connected to an indicator in the main vi using a control reference.
    The sub-vi started on the remote PC, but the information from the sub-vi was not passed to the control reference in the main vi. However, if I change the client name to the host PC, ie. running the server and client vi on the same machine, the code works as planned. I wonder if control reference is not suppose to work over a TCP VI Server connection?
    Any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

    Thank Jean-Pierre for pointing out that Refnums are local to an application and so control reference doesn't work between different applications on separate machines.
    In addition to the method shown in Jean-Pierre's example vi, I found that the use of "invoke method: GET control value" and "invoke method: SET control value" can produce similar results. See the attached files for an example. In this example, the indicator on the local vi is used to monitor the progress of the remote vi and the local control is used to stop the remote vi. So the data synchronisation between the two vi is not important here.
    However, you may notice the indicator "current counter" in main1_vi.vi doesn't properly interpret the binary string from "invoke method: GET control
    value", can someone shed some light on this, please?
