Use a second computer as a 3rd display?
Hi there!
Is it possible to use a second computer (my laptop in this case) to receive video as a 3rd display, through firewire? I think all I need is just a driver or program on the receiving computer to let be recognized as a camera by the main computer.
This thought is to avoid buying (impossible at this moment) a 2n graphic card.
Thanks a lot and if someone found another way to do that please let me know!
Hey! It worked! Thanks!
I can use my pc laptop as a 3rd monitor. After configuring an VNC program as a client on my laptop PC and started the screenrecyler (as a vnc server) on my mac, a 3rd monitor is detected in os x preferences. Nice!
I'm using a 1Gb ethernet connection and frame rates are quite good.
I don't need that 3rd monitor for high quality video, just to play piano while i'm looking video (I am composer and now I have my keyboard at on side, so I don't need any more to turn my head at right, just the laptop over the keyboard!).
Thanks again for your replies.

Using a second computer as a external midi instrument or DAW slave?
So this is my current setup:
iMac 24(FW 800 & 400) with logic 8 & reason 4,
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 firewire (x2) sound card/pre-amp,
Blackbook with MainStage & Reason 4.
& this is what I would like to do:
Use my imac as my main DAW master, (currently tracking to an external FW800 drive & pulling loops from a USB drive), & use my blackbook to run reason as a external midi device or slave.
My Saffire Pro 40 has 2xFW400 ports so I can connect both machines to it.
The idea behind this setup is to pull as many software sounds from the Blackbook & mainly use the imac to run Logic.
Does this make sense? & if so, what's the best way to execute this?
thanks in advanceHello -
I'm not entirely sure that one audio device such as the Saffire Pro 40 with 2 Firewire ports can be shared between two computers. It was always my impression that the second Firewire port was available to "daisy chain" another audio device or hard drive. Before you proceed, you might want to check with the company that manufactures the Saffire Pro 40 and make sure that two computers can interphase with it.
With regards to using a second computer as a "slave machine", it seems that many, many people do have such configurations to help spread the CPU and memory work-load. My happy Mac Pro is set up to work with a potential of two other "slave machines". When I use this set up, it works wonderfully. But, for most of the time, my happy Mac Pro can manage most sequencing projects (mostly orchestral with LOTS of instruments) on its own. Each computer, however, has its own audio device. All are connected to the Mac Pro using the ADAT light inputs/outputs from each audio device (I use MOTU's audio devices) and are managed midi-wise using Music Lab's MOLCP 3.
Good luck. . . -
How to use a second computer just to listen to iPod?
I want to use my computer at work to listen to the music on my Nano, not to manage it. My personal laptop is the Nano's "home" computer. I have iTunes installed on my work computer, but I don't want to transfer my Nano contents to that computer. I just want to use the work computer as a pass-though device to its speakers so I can listen to the music on iPod at the office. Is this possible?
When the Nano is plugged into the computer, I can't see what's stored on the Nano, but the songs will play--in alphabetical order only. Since I can't "see" what's on the Nano via the computer (and Nano's own screen goes to "Do Not Disconnect" when plugged in), I can only scroll through songs blindly using the "next" control in iTunes.
Is there a way to see my playlists and all Nano contents via the computer, without transferring anything to the computer itself? The IT guys will smack me silly if I have a music library on the work computer. I can't afford to buy a separate audio device (i.e., Bose speaker dock, etc.), and since my computer already has great speakers, it would seem redundant to buy a stand-alone speaker thingy just for the iPod.
Am I asking for the impossible? You have two choices: First, install iTunes on the
computer at work. Then set your iPod to manually
manage and connect it to the computer. It will show
up in iTunes and you'll be able to play the songs
that are on the iPod.
iTunes was installed first, well, second after I saw that WMP wouldn't work with the iPod. I selected "Manually manage," but that doesn't solve the problem. When in iTunes, the Nano shows up as a device over on the left side of the screen, but no matter where I click or what I try, it won't show me the contents of the Nano. If I click on the "play" button in iTunes, the music plays, but as I said earlier, songs are in ABC order. I have to just keep clicking the forward button to get to a song I want. I have over 3 gigs of music loaded on the Nano--that's a lot of blind scrolling!
Second, buy a pair of speakers
for the iPod.
See my first post. No money! -
CS4 cannot be used on second computer
I am able to use CS4 on one computer, but not my other machine, because it says I have it installed on too many machines. I did have it installed on another computer, but that one died, and I'm not able to access that machine to deactivate it.
I am wondering if there is a way to be able to use it on my second machine. Maybe my current serial number can be deactivated, and a new one can be supplied so I can install it on the two machines that I currently wish to use it on?Contact support by phone or web chat.

Using a second computer as a software synth
Hi Folks
I'm just thinking of running an old computer as a software synth and was wondering what I would need, i.e. midi interface, sound card and any advice that could be give so that I can sync the two machines up and get them working.

Lotus EaterHi
Several ways, some more complicated to setup than others!
Basically, you either need to run the Plugins in Standalone mode or use some kind of host software.
You will definitely want to check out Vienna Ensemble Pro:

Using a second monitor as the primary display with MiniDisplayPort
I've got a new iMac, but the screen seems to be straining my eyes. I'm trying things like scaling the display, lowering brightness, changing desktop layout, etc, but if all else fails...I'd like to go back to my old external monitor.
So, my question is...if I connected this monitor to the MiniDisplayPort on the iMac, could I use it as a single primary display, or would I have to use it as mirrored or secondary?Hi Brian,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. You can mirror the displays or make whichever display you want the primary in Extended Desktop mode. See this article for details:
How to use multiple displays with your Mac
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
The white bar at the top of the left blue box represents the menu bar and determines which display is your primary display. To change your primary display, click the white bar and drag and drop it on the blue box representing the display you would prefer to be your primary display.
Cheers,

Can not "Enable disk use" on second computer
We have two computers. One was our main system (and had all my downloaded music) and a newer laptop with nothing but loaded CD's.
I am now attempting to transfer everything onto my laptop, (This is my primary computer.) but when I select "Options" the "Enable Disk Use" is checked but greyed out and can not be accessed.
Everything else works fine. The outlook syncs up and I can organize music. I just can't utilize the disk.
Any advise?
Windows XP ProI can relate...sort of! My iTunes doesn't even HAVE that option. Can you believe it??? It's a brand new (although outdated) 40gb HP iPod, and I'm running HP version of iTunes 6. The manual says how I should enable (configure) the iTunes for use as hard disk--but it failed to tell me that no freaking icon would appear in that little corner. FRUSTRATED

Using a second computer when the first takes a dive
I need serious help....simply put: My original computer died on me and I cant seem to get any of my info from itunes or download my library off my nano....any ideas??? I know someone has had to have been through this before.
I know someone has had to have been through this before
Yes they have, and they're already posted it here.
Use something like iPodRip For Winderz (I'm assuming you're using winderz)
Or try putting it in Disk Mode or Manual Update and working from there. But be very careful. You could lose a lot of music in the blink of an eye. You should ALWAYS back it up somewhere

How do I use a second computer as a monitor?
Hi,
I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro. I want to primarily use my iMac and use my macbook as a monitor. I'm a musician and I want to run Ableton on one screen and maschine on another.
For some reason I can't find any forums explaining this, unless I'm just wording it wrong. I'm assuming it's a cord I need, probably a firewire.
Anyone know what to do?
Thanks,
SavannaOk, thanks. So my iMac takes a mini displayport cable and my macbook pro takes a thunderbolt cable. Do you know if they make cables with one side mini
displayport and the other side thunderbolt? I tried searching but found nothing. I'm guessing the only difference between the two (since they physically look the same) is the wiring inside, so they can't make a cord with both together. -
Using a second computer (an iMac) as an extended desktop monitor
Hello
I have a powerbook g4 and would really like to use a separate older iMac as an extended desktop. Is there a way to turn the iMac into just a monitor recognized by my powerbook?Does ScreenRecycler do what you want?

Using a second computer with an ipod set to manual update
I want to prevent my ipod 60GB video which is set to manual update on my G5 from being updated when I plug it into my powerbook. The powerbook assumes the ipod is available for auto update. How do I mount the iPod without iTunes automatically replacing its contents. I can't "preset" iTunes in its preferences to treat the iPod as a manual drive as it just says: "no iPod connected. As soon as I attach the iPod the auto update starts. Are there keystrokes to interrupt the update so I can set the iPod preferences on my Powerbook?
Thanks
Paul
G5 Dual 2Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.5) iPod 60GBHold down the ⌥ and ⌘ keys while connecting your iPod. Keep them down until iTunes has opened and your iPod shows in the Source list.

IMac display with second computer?
Is anyone driving the 27" iMac display with a second computer? If so, can you switch between the iMac and the second computer to see what is happening on each machine?
Yes you are. The two machines I use are mini displayport. Thunderbolt must hook to Thunderbolt. I wasn't thinking of the new iMac 27". Old timers moment.

I have just purchased a second ipod and have two computers w7 and xp, can i use one on each computer with the same account. I have a different playlist on my second computer. Thanks.
Sorry to ask, how do I do it please. I have my first ipod with the same account on both computers that have different libraries one of which I am building now. Do I have to de-authorise my original ipod on the computer that I want to use my new ipod on with the new library and then register my new ipod. I would rather do this than have 2 libraries on one itunes, but keep the same account details.
