Use a still frame elsewhere

I want to take a still frame from an iMovie project and use it in another, non-iMovie, project. I find the frame I want in the event browser, right click it, and select Add Still Frame to Project. My selected still appears at the end of the video on the story board. Now what? I cannot drag it to a non-iMovie folder and cannot copy/paste it to the non-iMovie folder. Right clicking the still does not present Reveal in Finder as suggested in the book I bought.  Thank you

Might need a little more information here. Are you trying to obtain screen captures? If all you're wanting to do is take stills from your videos then the answer is yes, you can but you'll have to transfer your videos from your iPhone to your computer first (unless you can find an APP on the iTunes store to help you to do it on your iPhone).
There are a few ways to do it. The first is that you can use the button on your keyboard called "Prt Scr" or "Print Screen". This takes a shot of your screen which you can then "paste" into a program like paint, or photoshop or even Word to then save as a jpeg image. When using this option a good trick is to use "Alt" + "Prt Scr" to only capture the current window rather than your entire desktop.
The other way to obtain screenshots is to download and install a program designed to do this for you. A great site to find something free to help you out is www.tucows.com. Try this link: http://www.tucows.com/search.html?search_scope=win&search_terms=screenshot&searc h_type=all
Also, some DVD programs have this function in built in them so it's a good idea to explore what's already installed on your computer.
    Hope this helps!

  • Any way to capture a still frame as an image in Imovie HD? "Create Still Frame" just gives me short MOV files

I'm trying to export a still from a project I'm working on so I can add some things to it in photoshop before importing it back in to the imovie project.
It's from the end of a clip I have. I know I could just use grab and take a screen capture but the quality would be awful.
Imovie HD has this feature, "Create Still Frame" and when I google this problem all the answers tell me to use that.
HOWEVER: When I do use Create Still Frame, instead of giving me a JPG I can use or another image format, it creates a short 5 second .mov clip of the still. If I wanted it in movie format I'd just use the original clip, what I need is an image format!
There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere to change what type of still frame format it uses. There must be a way to do this however, all the answers I've found say it should be JPG and I should be able to locate it then in the project package - what am I doing wrong?

The shortest way to accomplish this is to download a copy of MPEG Streamclip as relayed by longtime iMovie Discussion Group participant AppleMan1958
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15808352#15808352
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.

  • Still frames in project - Possible to Save as individual photos?

    Hello ...
I have taken a number of still frames from my video event and made a picture project ...
However when I export it .. it ends up as a video file ...
Is there a way of saving single pictures into iPhoto or whatever ... so that I can use these single pictures in another application ...
Thanks ... for any info ...

Is there a way of saving single pictures into iPhoto or whatever
    1) Select frame in Event window.
    2) Use "Add Still Frame to Project" option to move the selected Event frame to your Project window.
    3) Select the "Still Frame" in the Project window.
    4) Use the "Reveal in Finder" option to select the stored JPEG image.
    5) Image file can then be copied or you can double-click to open it in Preview which will allow you to save a copy to your preferred storage location and, if you wish, change its compression format at the same time.
    6) Now return to iMovie and if the "Still Frame" is not needed in your Project window, simply delete it.

  • Importing Still Frame .pict file comes in slightly squished...

...with thin vertical black bars on the sides.
I "save frame" as a pict file, edit the file in Photoshop without any resizing done to the file, save it into my iPhoto library as a pict file, import the file into iMovie with the Ken Burns effect TURNED OFF, and the frame appears to be slightly squished horizontally with a thin black vertical bar appearing on the right side of the frame.
This worked just fine in iMovie 3.0 as I ran several tests last year to see if this project of mine was going to work but now in iMovie HD 6.0........AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!
And also, somewhat unrelated, why can't iMovie save an exact clean frame when using "create still frame"?
Any thoughts and help is GREATLY appreciated!

I don't quite remember what your original goal was but anyway:
If you want to manipulate a video frame in Photoshop:
Export the clips as Full Quality DV from iMovie.
Open the .dv with QT Player and Edit/Copy the desired frame.
In Photoshop File/New... should propose 720x480 (NTSC). Then Edit/Paste... and manipulate the image. Then flatten the image and Save as TIF.
Open the .tif with QT Player. Do Edit/Copy. Then do Edit/Paste so many times that you reach the desired duration (2 seconds, for example).
Then choose File/Export.../Movie to DV stream/DV, NTSC, 16:9.
    Import the .dv to iMovie.
The colors seemed to pefectly match the original video clip's colors. I didn't touch the default color profiles at all.
One great benefit of that method is that no scaling is needed so every (unedited) pixel stays the same with no distortion. Of course you can set Photoshop to display the rectangular pixels as sqaure pixel aspect ratio (for 4:3 it is 4320:4739 ~0.9116 and for 16:9 it is (4320:4739)*(4/3) ~1.215).
Oh, no I remember where I got 875: It is (4320:4739)(4/3)720.

  • How to export still frame from Quicktime movie?

    Hello folks
I often need to use a still frame from a quicktime movie as an image file to work with in PhotoShop for windows.
If I export a frame via the export command and choose "Movie to picture" I end up with a .pct file, that Photoshop will not open.
I can open the .pct file with the Quicktime PictureViewer and then export it from that app as i.e. a JPEG-file, but I would like to avoid that extra step and just export a usable file straight from QT.
Anybody know how that can be done?
    Best regards
    Kris

Same problem here - no matter whether I choose Photo - JPEG or PNG format as the "compressor", QT 7 Pro wants to save with a .pct extension, and changing it to .jpg or .png extension fails to open.
The two workarounds I've found are:
    1. Save it in Photo - JPEG or PNG format with a .pct extension, open with Photoshop CS4 or below, save to desired format.
One may be able to accomplish the same using Preview instead of Photoshop, but on my Snow Leopard machine I get the error "The PICT file format is not supported in 64-bit mode. Try selecting "Open in 32 Bit Mode" in the Finder's info window for Preview." and I don't feel like bothering to do this.
    2. Use Grab to take a screenshot, copy into Preview, crop as necessary and save to desired format.
Which is easier depends on whether you feel like having to do precision cropping or not. Totally agree with above commenters - whither PICT, Apple?

  • Using still frame other than in iMovie

I have a still frame I grabbed from a movie clip. How do I move it and or save it so that I can use it in other applications, i.e., to send as an attachment with email?

Are you using imovie 08? This advice only applies for iMovie 08
If so, position your cursor at the point in your video that you would like to capture. Then right-click and select add still frame to project. You should see this still frame in your project, probably at the end. (You may want to start a new project so you don't clutter up an existing project.
Now right-click on the still frame in the project. Select revel in finder. This will bring up a finder window with the jpeg file highlighted. That is the one you want.

  • Ok to grab still frames from video, or use digital camera?

Noob here. Just bought a Sony DCR-HC96 DV camcorder that I'm still playing around with.
Wondering how good the photo image quality is if I use the "Save Frame" commend to create jpeg images from imported video. Or, am I better off relying on my digital camera for still images (requiring me to carry/use two gadgets)

    There's just one other thought:
A frame grab from an HD (hi-def) camcorder can look really good ..as in the 16:9 "widescreen" rhino, giraffe and zebra shots halfway down this page..
Click on those 16:9 photos to see larger versions.. (..the pics called "No pasaran!", "High, again!", "Camouflage", etc..)
Although the quality is not as good - as Kirk says - as a proper digital camera (..the other pics on that page were taken with an assortment of "proper" digital cameras..) there may be an occasional slight advantage to using an HD camcorder and then taking stills from the video: a camcorder generally has a longer zoom range than most digital stills cameras, so letting you get nice and close to the action.
So stills from a standard-def camcorder: no ..as Kirk says; awful.
Stills from an HD camcorder: can be fairly good..

  • Problem Previewing HD Project on NTSC Monitor - Only Still Frames...

    Hello all.
I have a calibrated NTSC That i purchased for accurate monitoring of my projects.
I thought I tested on a HD project, but for some reason, now that I'm working on a major project it's not working properly.
When I'm editing, it will display still frames but not video. Before anyone suggests it, i have triple checked that the External monitor setting in the view menu is on All Frames.
    Any suggestions?
    -aj

But it won't for HD. For HD you need an HD capture card and HD monitor.
If you are working with DVCPRO HD from a Varicam or HVX, then you can monitor to an HD monitor routing thru an AJ-HD1200 or 1400...or if you have a capture card with analoge outs like the Kona 2 then you can monitor on an SD monitor.
You cannot monitor HD with the same setup you use for SD. Sorry.

  • Can I copy clips from one project to another?  The clips are still frames captured within a video event.

Can I copy clips from one project to another?  The clips are frames saved as stills from a video event.  I try the copy & paste but it does not seem to work.

The video was converted into MP4 and then I could get it into iMovie events.  I had right clicked and saved farmes as stills.  ABout 50 of them,  When I tried to copy and paste those stills into another project I couldn't. They came up blank.
I ended up going to a Genius appointment at my APPLE store this afternoon and was told that those "stills" aren't really anything. Not a .jpg or video, so the program doesn't recognize them.  So instead I'm using the Project with the 50 stills and copying other .jpgs and video into it.  (This is for a 1961 Class Reunion, so it's old stuff).  Seems to work so far.
So bottom line seems to be I can use these stills created from a video in the project in which they were created, but no where else.  Do you know a way around this?

  • How to create and export a still frame from a movie in iMovie 09

Disclaimer: Apple does not necessarily endorse any suggestions, solutions, or third-party software products that may be mentioned in the topic below. Apple encourages you to first seek a solution at Apple Support. The following links are provided as is, with no guarantee of the effectiveness or reliability of the information. Are you working in iMovie and realize that certain frames in the movie would be perfect as photographs? Here is how to extract them...
*To get a still frame from an Event*, right-click on the frame and select "Add Still Frame to Project". The still will be added to the end of the current project. Right click on the still frame in the project and select "Reveal in Finder". You will see a jpeg file that is highlighted. Drag this jpeg file in the finder to the iPhoto icon on your dock.
*If you want a still from a project*, rather than an event, the process is similar, except you right-click on the frame and select "Add Freeze Frame", and it adds the freeze frame at the end of the clip rather than at the end of the project. Right-click/reveal in Finder, drag JPEG to iPhoto icon in dock.
*If you are not using iPhoto*, and just want to save to your desktop, click Reveal in Finder as above, then COPY, then PASTE to desktop.
Hint: If you do not want to clutter up your iMovie Project with stills at the end that you would have to go back and delete, then create a separate iMovie Project just for your stills, and follow the instructions for capturing stills from an Event.
Note: If you do not have a right mouse button, then control-click will work instead of right-click.

  • Video playback on external monitor only producing still frame

I am trying to use a HD TV as a playback device as managed to get it to work, however it has now stopped working and only produces a still frame. When I hit play it will play fine in the timeline but display only a still frame on the second monitor. I have made sure that the settings under video playback are set to full screen and that mirroring is turned off.
Even when I play back on Main the image on the main monitor only displays a still frame until the second monitor is unplugged.
    Am I missing something?

    How is the TV connected?
If via firewire and an analog/DV converter, are you feeding the HDTV something other than a DV signal? If so, it won't work.

  • Still frames not staying still...

I've had this problem on a couple of projects and have manned up to make my first post ever in a forum to try and solve it. Any help would be appreciated.
In Final Cut I made some still frames using the Modify--Make Freeze Frame command, then used a cross dissolve between the two images in the sequence. These are the only still frames in the sequence, the rest is video.
I've exported to Quicktime movie, then brought that movie into DVD Studio Pro, created the project and burned the disc. When watching the DVD all video footage is fine except for--the still images, which flicker like crazy. It is a long dissolve, nearly a minute, but I've had this problem on other projects where the freeze frame lasts only a few seconds and there is no transition used at all.
Any idea why this flickering (ghosting?) would occur with freeze frames? Know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have very thin horizontal lines you will get flickering due to the interlacing that TVs do. You can try running your stills through the de-interlace filter or the flicker filter. See which works best for you.
