Use a text layer on top of another text layer as a clipping mask?

I have searched and searched but I can not find an answer to this question. I've been creating a variety of graphic styles to use in illustrator. The appearance panel is an AMAZING tool but one function seems to be missing. I would very much like to use two identical layers of text to create a clipping layer within a graphic style. The reason I would like to do this is to create the illusion of beveling or just just to create an inner shadow without having to create highlights and shadows manually. As you can see in the attachment the Toony Toons Text has a highlight effect which I created by duplicating the text, removing the effects from the graphic style I made, expanding the words into outlines, overlapping the two and placing them offset of each other so I could shape subtract them and then placing the final highlight on top of the text. This would be SOOO much simpler if I could just create a stroke that sets INSIDE the text and could be offset as well as clipped by the text layer below it. Is this possible? I noticed I can't place a stroke on the inside of a text layer when I'm in the appearance pallet and masking text with text doesn't seem to work. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be really great!

A Google search phrase that includes the word InDesign finds results in Adobe user forums like this one, as well as in InDesign resources all over the Internet.

  • TOC text flows on top of existing text

    My book text is in a master text frame and everything seems find -- until I try to generate the table of contents. After I have loaded the cursor and click on the page I want the TOC to start, the text simply dumps out on page after page, over the TOP of the existing text.
    How can I get the TOC to flow into the text frame and push the other text down, just as if I typed more pages?
    Thanks.

    Thanks, Peter. I'm batting nothing today. I did what you suggested, added some pages and flowed it in.
    Are you referring to the master page linkage, or are you still having trouble with the TOC?
    I see you are a Frame refugee, and in all honesty your biggest hurdle using ID is going to be to stop thinking in terms of how you used to work in other applications. Once you start "thinking in ID" you'll find your workflow gets much smoother, and amy actually be a lot more productive. I was never a Frame user, but was a Pagemaker and very heavy Quark user for years, adn it took me a few months to catch on. For me, going back to Quark now is like trading a ferrari for a bicycle.
    Hi, Peter S:
    In this case, FrameMaker's method is what you're suggesting for InDesign. FrameMaker generates TOCs and other lists and indexes as separate files, which are then usually added to multi-file books. Updating a book gives the option to update or ignore any of the defined generated files. This is partly a vestige of the old days, when computers had much less horsepower than they do today, so omitting the generated files when updating a book, saved time. It's still a useful option in collaborative workflows where different users manage different book component files.
    InDesign's TOC-generation behavior actually overcomes one FrameMaker difficulty - incorporating TOCs in individual files and updating them.
    As to vehicle comparisons between FrameMaker and InDesign, for technical publishing, it's more like comparing two bicycles or two Ferraris; they're quite close to each other. The real differences are in areas that matter only to the drivers. FrameMaker's closely-integrated with help-system creation tools, XML, and DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture - a method of authoring that reduces content duplication enforces consistency in re-used content.) If you know the old kiddie cartoon show, "Wacky Racers," you'll see the feature competition similarly - it's a constant state of one getting ahead by a huge leap, then another takes the lead for a while because of a brilliant discovery, or due to the leader's stumble.

  • Text becomes overset when moved on top of another object

    I'm trying to figure out why everytime I move a text box on top of another object the text suddenly becomes overset and disappears.  If I move it off the object or out of the spread entirely, the text comes back and appears normal.  I've tried placing the file, copy and pasting the file, copy and pasting the selected text, moving the text box into a separate layer, checking the ordering to ensure the text box is on top, but nothing seems to work.  Any thoughts on why this is happening?

    your going to chase your tail with that "solution".
    Select all (ctrl+a)(cmd+a) and set Text Wrap to none as shown.
    The item could be on a master page or a locked layer, but  you indicate you were able to modify the wrap attributes...

  • Cant put image on top of another image

    Hi,
    I'm using keynote 09 with the 'Blueprint' theme. I'm attempting to edit the master slides by putting a company logo in the corner of each slide. This works fine on slides without images, but on slides with images, keynote will not let me put my logo over the image placeholder. The placeholder image always blocks my logo, even when I choose 'Send backward' on the place holder.
    Is there a way around this?
    thanks

    Sorry, I was typing fast.
    The problem is that you cannot put images above media placeholders on master slides. One suggestion was to make my image (my logo comprised mostly of white text) a media placeholder as well, therefore I could edit the master slide and layer my new media placeholder (logo) above the default-already-existing placeholder (some architectural image in the blueprint theme).
    This works but has an additional problem.
    Since my logo is white text, I wanted for it to stand out from the picture beneath it. As I sometimes do, I thought I should place my white-text-logo on top of a small black rounded rectangle with transparency (like a cartouche).
    I like to do that because it makes my logo legible, while still showing the picture through the transparency. INdeed, this is easy to do if you are only dealing with pictures and shapes (and not the magical placeholder versions of them)
    You can make the shape a text placeholder, and you can make the image (logo) a media placeholder, but you can't group the two together as a unit. And if you group them first, then you cannot make your group (shape+image-logo) a placeholder at all, so you then cannot layer it on top of the default image place holders.
    I was saying that I'd have to open my logo in photoshop and put it on top of a 'cartouche' and then import that modified image, and THEN make it a media placeholder.
    But obviously it would be easier if keynote just let us properly layer elements as you would expect it to work.
    I mean, setting images aside, why can't I create a shape and put it in front of a media placeholder without making the shape a text placeholder?
    Of course I can edit my logo and add dropshadow or glow to make it stand out, but even then, I would need to make it a placeholder before keynote would let me layer on top of another placeholder. And if I'm going through the trouble of using photoshop to add shadows or glows, I might as well just put the image on top of a cartouche as originally desired.

  • Is it possible to show/hide a result text field only if another Text field is visible and has content?

    Hi
    Please could someone tell me if it is possible to make a text field visible only if another text field is visible and has content?
    I have this which works for the content part, but sometimes the field is hidden, so the script must not apply.
    var v1 = getField("Text1").value;
    event.target.display = v1 !== ""  ?
    display.visible : display.hidden;
    What I need is something along the lines of:
    var v1 = getField("Text1").value;
    event.target.display = (v1 !== "" && v1!=="Hidden") ?
    display.visible : display.hidden;
    Thanks for any advise.

    Thanks for the hints which led me to the right solution. I created a query to check if the trigger for the visibility was there or not, and this works. The script I have used is:
    var v1 = getField("Text1").value;
    var v2 = getField("Checkbox").value;
    var v3 = getField("Text2").value;
    event.target.display = (v1=="" || v3=="" && v2=="On" ) ?
    display.visible : display.hidden;

  • Seamless repeating pattern - using embedded images with clipping masks

    Hi forum,
    We struggle a bit creating a seemless repeating pattern that includes embedded images with clipping masks applied.
    Our pattern is a 550x550mm black square with various embedded inserted on top. All of these images have Clipping Masks applied to hide unwanted areas.
    These images are placed so they create a seamless repeating pattern and this includes areas that overlap the square.
    Once we create a swatch from this pattern the repeatable area becomes too big as it includes the unwanted areas hidden by the clipping masks.
    Because the repeatable area is now too big it's actually not repeatable.
    We tried various things in order to solve this issue. Pathfinder/crop to delete the unwanted areas in the images etc.
    None of them worked good enough.
    We though of just livetracing the images, but due to the complexity this is not an option.
    Do we really have to do our "cutting" in Photoshop or do you know any fancy tricks for issues like this?
    Appreaciate your insight
    Kenneth

    Kenneth,
    You may try the destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine),
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector,
    3) Shudder.
    This should reduce the size to the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path.

    My Photoshop CS 5 has some strange actions when I copy a portion of a photo using the clone stamp  to transfer to another part of the image. It carries the entire layer (not just the stamps selection) across the screen and I cannot place it where I need to. It appears as if I selected the entire layer on purpose (which I did not)
    The below items appeared when I opened Photoshop CS 5:
    “Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled G & U enhancements. Check the video card malfunctions website for latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.”
    (I believe this started after the automatically updated Windows was applied. It was coincident with the before mentioned problem . . . but I don’t really know if it had anything to do with it. )

    For the Clone Stamp problem, check the Clone Source panel and Clipped is probably unchecked.
    If so, check Clipped and see if that makes a difference.
    (Window>Clone Source)
    As to the video card problem:
    Which version of windows are you using?
    What is the make and model of your graphics card?
    Do you know which update windows installed?

    Woodstock apparently renders some Javascript/DOM with some homegrown widget framework which on its turn renders the HTML DOM tree instead of plain vanilla HTML. Correct me if I'm wrong, to confirm this, just view the generated HTML source of the page.
    After some Googling I found out that you need getProps() and setProps() to get and set element attributes respectively.

    If you stucks with this, I recommend you to post this question at a forum or mailinglist devoted to Woodstock, e.g at their own homepage at dev.java.net or the Netbeans forum at nabble.com. You're here at a Sun JSF forum, not at a Woodstock forum.

    Hi silverbird,
    Your subscription allows you to use ExportPDF from a supported web browser on any device--you don't need a separate subscription for separate devices. When you say you can't get it to work on your laptop--do you mean you're unable to log in? Do you get a particular error message? Please let me know what's happening on your laptop, and we will take it from there.

  • I have never used PS, and I am trying to edit a brochure created by someone else.  I need to move text from one column to another

    I have never used PhotoShop and do not have time at the present. Please help me to move a section of text from one column to another in a brochure.

    Here are 3 options for future reference:
    1. With the setup you've described, apply a Match Move behavior to  the text and make the rectangle the source. Change the Transform parameter to Mimic source.  This way you can still adjust the text postion as needed, but the rectangle will drive the animation.
    2. Use a group to do the animation.  Put both your rectangle and text in the same group and animate the group's postion.
    3. Use the Link behavior.
    Each of these has it's advantages depending on what you need.

  • Div Layer on top of Div Layer impossible problem

    Hello guys,
    For over 42 hours I've been puzzling myself with this problem.
    Using Dreamweaver cs5.5, i have a text box with overflow:auto, because there's alot of text. On top of this layer I have another div layer with a pic that fades when the page loads.  My problem is the scrollbar is beneath the layer for the pic that fades, so when you try to scroll down the page you cannot because the pic layer blocks it.  In Internet Explorer it works perfectly fine, but not in any other browser.
    Anyone know any way around this uberly frustrating problem?
    Thanks, and take care!
