Use a thumb drive for recovery startup?

27" iMac late 2010 OSX 10.9.4. After recent startup disk failure, I've been interested in crash recovery steps. Can I use a 64 GB USB thumb drive for an emergency STARTUP DISK?

Yes, but you don't need one that big. An 8 GB is sufficient.
OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant
You could also install the full OS on that USB and be able to boot into a system as opposed to just Recovery.

Can I use a usb thumb drive for Time Machine backups?

    Hello,
Yes you can use a (large) thumb drive. The most common format for a Time Machine backup drive is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Hope this will help.

Or am I missing the bigger picture?

As long as you have a Superdrive or an external burner/drive, burning, watching, installing, etc. from CD or DVD will work just fine. And so will sharing.

  • I'm going to be using a borrowed computer, so don't want to make permanent changes to that FF. Is there a way to sync the FF settings and keep them on a thumb drive for temporary use?

Is there a way to sync the FF settings and keep them on a thumb drive for temporary use? I know you can try to copy the "default" folder in .mozilla, but that usually ends up a mess. The home computer runs on Linux, don't know what the borrowed one will be.

There's Portable Firefox for Windows - http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable - and another for Macs - http://www.freesmug.org/portableapps/firefox/ - not for Linux, AFAIK.
Firefox Sync works thru a server, either Mozilla's sync server or a local sync server the user has running on their own LAN. There's no way to sync the data to a thumb drive unless it has a version of Firefox on that thumb drive.
You didn't mention which "settings" are involved, but you can export your Firefox bookmarks in HTML format to a thumb drive, and view that bookmarks.html file on any web browser on just about any operating system.
Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks ''(or Organize Bookmarks for 3.6 and earlier versions)''-> Import & Backup - Export HTML...
For your other personal data in Firefox, there is no real solution outside of using Firefox.

  • Re-install lion using Apple Thumb drive

I am having some problems with the sleep fucntion and want to consider a re-install of Lion as a way to correct the problem.
I have a MacBook Pro, bought June 2011.  I upgraded from Snow Leopard using the Apple Thumb drive.
Pretty much all advice for installing and re-installing Lion refers either to the downloaded version for the App Store or using a recovery file produced by the user after installation.
I am just wanting straighforward guidance on the process for doing a re-install of Lion using the Thumb drive or whatever process is proper.
I have a Time Machine set up with a Time Capsule.  Not really sure if this could end up causing me more troubles using the stroed data/files.  It may be those which are causing the troubles.
If necessary,I am fully prepared to use an external drive to capture my files (photos, music and iWork stuff) and then use these as I need to for restoring data.
Bottom line: how do I do a re-install of Lion using a MBP with an upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard from a thumb drive from Apple?

Just plug in the thimb drive and reboot the unit. After you hear the startup sound press and hold the "Options" key. You willl get a one time boot screen where you can select the drive to boot to. Select the USB thumb drive.

  • HT4527 I transfered my Itunes information using a thumb drive to my new computer and downloaded the newest version of itunes to my new laptop. My songs are all there on the new computer but it won't recognize my ipod and sync.

I transfered my I tunes library to my new laptop using a thumb drive. I downloaded the newest version of Itunes to my new computer. My old ITUNES library of songs and books came across just fine. I can play them on the new laptop but they won't sync with my Ipod. The Itunes shows no devices when I hook it up to the laptop. Windows recognizes that the IPOD is hooked up. But no connection with ITUNES. Did I make a mistake in trying to sync my Itunes purchases to the new laptop before transfering the old library into the new ITUNES. If so how do I undo the problem.  Please help.  I use a PC with Windows XP.

  • Can I Still Use My Hard Drive For Other Things After I Do A Time Machine Backup?

I'm currently in the process of backing up my imac with time machine using a Western Digital My Passport 1TB hardrive. My total back up is just about 600GB. I've read that I will still be able to use my hard drive for backing up or transfering other files but I should partition my hard dirve. Now that time machine back up has started, will I still be able to partition my drive or is that something you must do before using time machine?
    -Gabrielle

macjack has a very valid point, so you might want to consider a second drive for files.
To partition, you need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on restart. Select Disk Utility.
Step 1 - select the hard drive.
Step 2 - select the Partition tab.
Step 3 - select the current partition and then use the lower right corner to push up and resize the partition.
Step 4 - click the plus sign to add a partition. Then select the new partition.
Step 5 - Name the new partition and select the format. The one shown in the screen shot is generally recomended.
    Step 6 - Hit apply.
This procedure can be reversed at a later date if you find your Time Machine backup needs more space.

  • Use of thumb drive screws up iPhoto

What has trying to use a thumb drive done to my iPhoto files?  A couple years ago, I transferred many photos to a thumb drive as an iPhoto file.  I believe there was a trick to getting the iPhoto software over to the thumb drive, but I've no recollection how I did it.  Anyway, there was no problem with iPhoto on the thumb drive or on my MacBook-- both showed the pix they should have. The other day, I tried to move a few more photos to the thumb drive, but they didn't fall into iPhoto.  I guess that would require some extra software.  The annoyance is that when I eject the thumb drive and summon iPhoto, I don't see what should be on my computer but still see the iPhoto display from the thumb drive -- apparently it's been retained on my hard drive or in memory.  I've tried restarting the computer, after which the best I can get is an iPhoto screen with no photos at all in it.  There are three or four photo libraries on the hard drive, but none containing all my current pix.  I have found some of those photos on the hard drive by using Spotlight to list items with .jpg suffixes.  But they seem to be scattered, and I doubt that all the old pix are there.
This all involves a MacBook running OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 6.0.5, and a Geeksquad 4-GB thumb drive.

Thanks for your prompt response to my posting.  In response to your questions and comments:
    1.  The thumb drive's format appears to be "MS-DOS File System (FAT32)"
    2.  "fall into" refers to the fact that the pix recently transferred to the thumb drive didn't go directly into the "iPhoto Library" folder already on the drive and listing material put on the drive a year or so ago but are listed as individual jpeg files.  I've dragged these individual pix into the iPhoto Library.  But I hesitate to boot from the thumb drive because of the mess it led to the other day.
    3.  When I enter /volumes in the Finder/Go/Go to Folder wndow, The volumes directory that appears lists aliases for my computer's hard drive and the thumb drive, which is plugged in at the moment.  Entering volumes in Spotlight produces only documents that mention the word "volumes."

  • Have leopard can I with using lion thumb drive, install without first install snow leoapard

Have leopard, can I with using lion thumb drive, install without first install snow leoapard ?

The requirement for Snow Leopard was for downloading Lion from the app store. With Lion on the thumb drive, you can upgrade without SL.

  • Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro WONT INSTALL!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought the $69 Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro (still running leopard) and when I insert the drive, the Lion Install screen opens up and it say "You cannot use this version of the application Install Mac OS X Lion with this version of Man OS X."
The Guy at the Apple store said it should just install! I hope somebody can help me through this, I shouldn't have to pay another ******* $30 to run something that was supossed to work in the first place!

Does that mean I will have to re-install all apps? Will I have to do this regardless??

I doubt this can be relocated or moved so you might want to just repost in the macbook pro area.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • Using an External Drive for Time Machine and Other Things

I have a 2TB external drive which I use for Time Machine Backups on my 2 macs. The macs have HDs of 500GB and 160GB so the external drive has ample space for backups.
Is it okay to use the external drive for other things that I don't care if they aren't backed up (like digital copies of DVDs)? i.e. Will Time Machine cause any issues if a drive is used for more than just Time Machine backups?

Maybe. See #1 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

It's best to put such things in their own partition. See #3 in the FAQ.
You may also want to make separate partitions for each Mac's backups, if you're backing-up either one directly (ie, not over your network). See #4 in the FAQ.
