Use AEX to create an ethernet connection

Hi,
I would like to make my airport express to pick up a wireless signal (from the neighbors, we can use their internet since we will live here temporarily) and then use the ethernet port on my AEX to get it to my MBP, so I'll have a good internet connection in places where the wireless signal is weak.
I read some stuff about letting the AEX take part in a WDS network but still don't get the picture how to set it up.
The main router is not an apple router and I also don't have access to it to configure it etc.
Is it possibe at all to set it up regarding the limitations I have?
Thanks

Thanks for the info. This will work if the other wireless router is compatible for this purpose. You will not know unless you try.
You will need to know the exact security setting that the wireless network is using in order to configure the AirPort Express to "join" that network. This might be something like WPA/WPA2 or WEP 128 or WEP 40, for example.
You will need to have AirPort Utility installed on your computer to configure the AirPort Express. It will also help the process if you temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express (AX) for the configuration. You can disconnect the cable when the AX is configured.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name and device password to your AX and adjust time settings
Click the Wireless tab to configure the AX.
Wireless Mode....Join a wireless network. If you do not see this choice, hold down the "option" key on your computer when you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name....the name of the wireless network that you are joining should appear as a selection choice
Place a check mark next to Allow ethernet clients
Wireless Security...must exactly match the security setting for the other router that is creating the wireless network
Wireless Password...password for the wireless network
Click Update at the lower right and the AX will restart in 20-25 seconds.
If the wireless router is compatible, you will have an ethernet connection at the Airport Express

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."

In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

  • Use TIme Capsule as an ethernet connection Only

I have had a problem that seems to occur often in this forum. I had TC working with time machine. Away for a few weeks and now every time it tries to back up after hours some times 24 or so having backed up 3.5gb of 195gb I get the backup failed message. I have reset the TC and deleted the old file. Live in a condo and have networking supplied so I have set my time capsule to extend the network. I am not running any antivirus software.
I think the solution maybe to just use an ethernet connection. Presently I have the time capsule connect to the net and an ethernet connection from my imac to TC. The TC wireless mode is set to join a wireless net work.
I would like to just use the ethernet connection is that possible. I do not want to turn the TC off as if I can get it all working again I would like to use the TC to back up a macbook as well.
    Can anyone help please.
    Mitch

Sure.. but it is still a network drive and must use wireless or ethernet.. the best way is plugged into the main router in bridge mode.. but you can use it in secondary network.. although the setup is more complicated.
It is also less good than a simple external drive.. which is cheaper, faster and more reliable. Consider if the TC doesn't suit your needs get rid of it and opt for simple external drive.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • Using time capsule to share internet connection with a pc via ethernet

    Hi,
I've recently acquired a time capsule and was wondering if i could use it to share a wireless internet connection via ethernet to my non-wireless (windows 7) pc?
My current situation is that i have a wireless modem/router that shares my internet connection wirelessly with my mac mini.
I have a pc without a wireless card that i want to connect to the wireless network so i was wondering if it was possible to attach the pc and the time capsule with an ethernet cable, then connect the time capsule to the wireless network and share the internet connection with the pc.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and if so how?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussion area!
IF...your wireless network is now being created by another Apple "n" router like an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express or Time Capsule, it would be possible to do what you want to do.
But the Time Capsule would not be compatible for what you want if your wireless is created by another manufacturer's router. The Time Capsule could "join" this wireless network so that backups would occur over wireless. However, when the Time Capsule is configured this way, the ethernet ports on the device are not active, so this would not help with the ethernet connection that your computer needs.
A new AirPort Express 802.11n would do what you want. It has the capability of joining virtually any wireless network and the ethernet port can be enabled using the ProxySTA feature, so it would work for your purpose.

  • Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch. Failed to connect Ethernet switch port

    Hello Folks
I am completely stuck with the configuration of my virtual networks. I have one logical switch left to add to one of my Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts when I started getting the error below when I try to add logical switches to either Hyper-V Host. I have been using
the document. 'Hybrid Cloud with NVGRE (Cloud OS)' to implement the virtual networking. Basically using the exact configuration that is in the document. I have added the PA Logical Network and the Network adapters and added the logical switch for it to my

been able to find any information about it.
Also a some quick info on tracing an error like this so I can figure out what is causing it.

notice your GUID?  you may want to consider ensuring that is the same GUID associated in your database.  Sometimes during data corruption theres a smidge of a chance your sql database kind of either pulls old guids esp if this was reverted to snapshot
without it being powered off etc.
I would try that first.  then i would consider if you get to configure that with your current liscense associated with the host.  I would need way more info to help any further

  • Can't print using ethernet connection

I am running Lion (10.7.4) on new Macbook Pro and am not able to connect my printer (HP LaserJet 5000GN) via an ethernet connection. I've downloaded the software drivers from Apple (v. 2.9) and used software update to make sure I am fully up to date, and restarted.
When I select System Preferences>Print and Scan and the click "+" in the dialog box, the Add Printer window comes up with nothing in the default window. When I go to the IP window in Add Printer the three options are IPP, LPD, and Socket. If I enter my IP address in the address box (I get a "Valid and complete address" verification in the window, I also pinged the printer successfully in Network Utility), and select the HP LJ 5000 series in the "print using" box, IPP gives me an error and LPD and Socket tells me "Unable to verify the printer on your network. It can not be currently determined if ‘192.168.0.4’ supports the HP JetDirect Protocol. Would you still like to create the queue?" If I select it anyway, it gets hung up on the "Setting up '[name of IP address]'" popup (shows it's running but never completes) unless I click the configure button and check the boxes.
After checking the boxes if I then go back to the Print & Scan Window, a printer appears with my IP address as its name. If I try to print, the Print Queue window comes up but the progress bar just runs endlessly and I get a message in Print Queue window, "Microsoft Word - Unable to verify your printer on your network." (The first part is because I tried to print a MSW document, but I've tried other software and it still fails to print.)
I've also tried this with different ethernet cables and with a direct ethernet connection vs. on a hub. The printer was working fine via ethernet connection on my old Macbook running 10.4, so I know this is some kind of software/configuration problem. This is an old printer so ethernet is the only option for connecting to the computer.
Any help would be much appreciated.

seems like it's all working now. i selected apple talk, and it found my laserwriter instantly.
    forgot about apple talk!

  • I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups and it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule to use with my Mac running latest Maverics. After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups from my small driveand it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I overcame the permissions by allowing both paths to have read and write access to anyone but that didnt solve it until I copied it into the DATA directory which I created on the Airport Time Capsule.
I had already discovered the TIME MACHINE How to transfer backups but I am struggling still with the item and cannot currently get it to work. My setup seems to have created a wireless link to my router which is what I wanted and in that set up there are three options. I have simply gone for the extension of my network. I ignored the other option there which I cannot remember something like DNS? That may be the problem becasuse when I remove the Ethernet connector it just doesnt go anywhere.
I have also found I cannot update my TIME MACHINE software (currently 1.3) as although Apple tell me I should be able to set backups hourly daily or weekly I have only ever been able to run it hourly when i would prefer longer intervals so thought an update might be necssary.
Also tried to get an update for my Airport Utility (Currently 6.3.2 but cannot find one even though I have read there might be one available and again this might be the problem.
Have reset the Time Capsule now about a dozen times.
Following the instructions and trying to copy my existing backup it suggests you need to copy it to the root directory but that is when I get some sort of security issue and I found I could only get it to accept if I dragged my .backupdb to the DATA directory on the Time Capsule. I dont even know if I do this it will work when I come to use it.
I therefore found your reply of no more help than i had discovered but I hope you return to read this note because I really do need some help.
I am intending starting again in the next couple of days and fully documenting what I do and what I see and then as I suspect it will be no different and I will then seek an appointment at the Apple Store in Trafford Centre and if that proves unsuccessful then I still have time to return and become a dissatisfied customer with Apple for the first time in a long experience with Apple. I have noticed frightening notes on the conversations which point to problems of Mavericks working with Airport Time Machine!! So in the end it might not be me doing anything wrong. Unfortunately you do feel left out in the dark sometimes that is why I hope you can respond with a solution?

  • Extending range using ethernet connection

I have an airport extreme that is currently broadcasting a wireless network throughout our house. I would like to be able to use a laptop or Ipad out by the pool, but the signal is week or sometimes doesn't exist. We have a pool house with an ethernet port that is wired into the home network and I would like to hook up an airport express using that ethernet connection to extend the network range (with as little loss of speed and bandwith as possible). How do I do that? Any help would be much appreciated, particularly if you can make it simple, step by step. I have researched other posts on this site, but have gotten lost in the technical jargon. thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions, DaveinOL!
Here's how to do what you want with an AirPort Express:
Temporarily, locate the AirPort Express near your computer and connect a short ethernet cable from the computer to the AirPort Express
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select your AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name to your device, establish a device password and adjust Time Zone Settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact name of your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) will allow a variety of devices to connect
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as your AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and the Express will restart in 20-25 seconds and you should have a green light. You can now disconnect the ethernet cable you used for setup and locate the Express where you need it.
This type of setup is known as a "roaming network" because computers will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal as they "roam" around your house and outside area.

  • How do I use my ethernet connection for printing on my LAN and use my Wifi on a different router and ISP to connect to the internet?

I'm in a small office, and I have to use my ethernet connection to connect to the networked copier to be able to print, but connection to which I hooked my Time Capsule is literally 20x faster when connecting to the internet.
How can I tell the computer to use the ethernet connection to print, while everything else should go through wifi?
I have been manually going back and forth changing the order in Network Preferences between ethernet and Wifi, but I'm know there must be an easier way.  Thanks for your help!

A packet going to Apple is not local. It is going to 17.149.160.49  -- So it is sent to the topmost working connection to be Routed and sent to the Internet.
A packet going to a local computer or other device that is on the same subnet (has an IP address very close to the topmost IP Address of your computer) gets sent out that port as well, but is sent directly to that computer on the local subnet, since no Routing [changing of Addresses} is needed.
A packet going to a local computer or Printer or Network Attached Storage device that is not on the topmost subnet, but is on a secondary subnet such as the second network connection would be sent directly to that computer, since no Routing is needed.
I do not understand why two Routers have the same IP Address if they are not cross-connected. That makes everything very difficult when it should be simple.

  • How can I use my ipad in a hotel that only has ethernet connections.    The apple store clerk told me that I can't use airport express unless I also have a computer with me in the hotel.

How can I use my Ipad in a hotel that only has ethernet connections?  The Apple store clerk told me that travel express won't work in my hotel unless I also have a computer.

The issue with the Airport Express (or any of the Apple routers) is that you need the Airport Utility to configure it.  Airport Utility works on OSX and Windows, but not on the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch.)  It will work, if you can preconfigure the Airport correctly ahead of time, but you'd be stuck if you did need to reconfigure while at the hotel.
You can use most any other router that is configured with a web page, which means you have a chance of configuring with Safari on the iPad.  If you want something somewhat portable, I use a "travel router" made by D-Link. The current model is the DAP-1350.  Other companies make similar travel routers, but I have no experience with the others.

  • After Using Ethernet Connection For Months Airport Will No Longer Connect.

For the last few months I have been connecting my iMac to my Netgear Wireless Router by an Ethernet cable, as I no longer needed to use a wireless connection.
Yesterday, my son tried to connect to my wireless router with his Toshiba laptop. He connected to the wireless signal easily but his web browser was unable to connect to the internet.
So I decided to test my iMac wirelessly to see if I could spot his problem.
I turned on Airport and after a while a window appeared saying,"None of your preferred networks are available".
Yet my network was listed (together with several neighbours' networks).
I highlighted my network and clicked "Join". After a short while the message "Connection Failed" appeared.
Obviously I have tried this numerous times and in different ways to no avail.
I actually changed the name of my network a few weeks ago and tested it successfully at the time.
So my son can connect his PC to the network but can't access the internet, whilst I cannot connect to my router even though I can see it listed.
Any useful suggestions ...... mainly to get my Airport connecting first?
Needless to say when I use an ethernet connection I have no problems accessing the internet.

Sorry, didn't want to post verbose instructions if they weren't needed. Let's go one by one:
Is he getting all the right IP information - IP/mask/gateway/DNS?
Go to a command prompt (Start/run, type CMD then Enter). Then type IPCONFIG then Enter. This will give you everything except DNS. Run IPCONFIG /ALL. Note the DNS server(s). Compare this output with your Mac (System Preferences/Network).
If so, from Terminal, ping the gateway, then DNS, then yahoo.com. Where/when does it fail? If it fails at yahoo.com, does it resolve the name to the IP address?
Whoops, my bad, Terminal is Mac. From the command prompt you're hopefully still in (if not, run CMD again), ping the default gateway listed in the IPCONFIG output from above (type PING followed by gateway address; looks like #.#.#.#) Successful? If so, ping DNS server from IPCONFIG /ALL output. Successful? If so, ping yahoo.com. First, does it resolve yahoo.com to an actual address (i.e. 68.180.206.184)? Do you get replies, or does it timeout?

  • Create outgoing SSL connections in WebLogic 4.5.1 using JSSE

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to create outgoing SSL connections from a WLS 4.5.1 using
    JSSE.
I've implemented an application using JSSE for POSTing data to an HTTPS server
that requires client authentication and it worked fine. But when used inside the
WebLogic server it doesn't work, because the WLS SSL classes are used instead
of the JSSE ones. It returns a "java.io.IOException: Alert: fatal handshake_failure".
If the ssl.enable property is set to false probably it will work, but I need it
set to true. Does anyone a way to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I also need to do the same in weblogic 5.1 (sp8). I know
it is not possible with JSSE, but how do I achieve with
weblogic implementation of Https? I am getting "Non
supported cipher requested" error. How do I remove this message. It will be
of great help if someone can list
down the configuration step in weblogic. I am trying
to find it in weblogic documentation but no success so far.

    Hi Nuno,
I don't think that you can use JSSE to make outgoing SSL connections inWLS 4.5.1 because
of the many conflicts between JSSE and the WLS SSL classes
In versions of 5.1 (such as sp9 and up), and also 6.0 and 6.1, BEA gotrid of these
conflicts to make the use of JSSE possible with WebLogic to do outgoingSSL.
In 4.5.1, I believe you are out of luck.
