Use Airport Express Brick N to extend network via ethernet

I have the old brick-style Airport Express N model, which I'm currently using to extend the newer Airport Express hockey puck. The hockey puck is setup to with DHCP and creating the network. The brick is in setup to extend the network using DHCP and in Bridge Mode. When I plugin the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of the hockey puck to the brick, I lose all internet connectivity. I seem to recall reading some documentation that said the brick would support ethernet rather than just over-the-air. Thanks for your help!

It is possible to "extend" in two different ways:
1) Extend using a wireless connection between the AirPorts. Apple calls this "extend using wireless" during the setup. When you extend this way, about half of the potential speed on the network is lost.
2) Extend using a wired Ethernet connection between the AirPorts. Apple calls this "extend using Ethernet" during the setup. When you extend this way, full bandwidth on the network is maintained since there is no signal loss in a wire.
If you want to "extend using Ethernet", the 2nd Gen AirPort Express must be the "main" router, so you will need to reconfigure it for that purpose. The 1st Gen will also need to be reset back to default settings and reconfigured as well.
Once the 2nd Gen Express is working correctly as the main router, connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN <--> port on the 2nd Gen Express to the Ethernet port on the 1st Gen Express and use AirPort Utility for the setup.

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express
Power up the Extreme and Express if they are not already powered up
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltities > AirPort Utility
Click on the tab in the upper left hand corner of the window that reads Other AirPort Base Stations (1)
Click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx
Wait a minute or two while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and then announces that the Express will be configured to extend your network
Enter a name for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait 2-3 minutes while AirPort Utility configures the Express and the Express restarts
When you see the message that setup is complete, click Done
That's it.

Can I use airport express to make my pc pick up the wifi by plugging the pc into the ethernet socket? I would also plug a printer (currently connected to the pc) into the usb, so it can become a shared printer.

Yes. But, it is the AirPort Express that would "pick up the wifi". Then, you would connect an Ethernet cable from the AirPort Express to the PC.
Configure the AirPort Express to "Join a wireless network" and click the option to "Enable Ethernet clients" during the setup to activate the Ethernet port on the device.
I would also plug a printer (currently connected to the pc) into the usb, so it can become a shared printer.
There is a good chance that your printer will work connected this way, but you won't really know until you try.

Can I use Airport Express as a Wifi Extender?

Forgive my ignorance, but I just swithed to all Apple products a few months ago and I have a question about the airport express.
We currently have one airport extreme base station set up in our house. The only problem is that the g signal for my iPhone won't reach quite far enough to get to the third floor (its a very long and tall home).
I was wondering if you can use the Airport express as a wifi extender with no cords plugged into it, similar to the linksys extenders you can buy that extend the signal range.

Yes, an AirPort Express could be used with your Extreme to "extend" the wireless network created by the Extreme. I assume here that you have an "n" capable Extreme.
If you have an older 'g" Extreme, the Express could be used to "participate in a WDS" (wireless distribution system), which is a similar setup.
It will probably take some experimenting to find the best position for the Express (you want it to receive as strong a signal as possible and "extend", so a good starting point would be to place the Express at a point that was roughly half way between the Extreme and the area that needs more wireless signal.

Cannot connect devices using Extend Network via Ethernet

I have been going nuts with this issue, and cannot seem to find any solutions. PLEASE HELP!
I have an Airport Extreme (pretty new and all up to date) connected to my modem. Everything works perfectly. The wi-fi is great, all devices can connect without any issues so nothing is wrong here. The Airport extreme is dishing out the IP addresses etc. The Airport extreme is in the lounge.
I purchased a new airport express yesterday. I put it in my study, far away from the lounge. I connected the airport extreme to the airport express using an ethernet cable. I plugged it in, and set it up to extend the wireless network via ethernet. I.e. it is set up in bridged mode and set up to 'create a wireless network' with identical name password etc. Everything is good. It reboots and the light is green. in the Airport utility everything shows up correctly.
Here is the problem., The second that any device (lets say iphone) moves from the lounge to the study, and tries to 'jump' to the stronger network provided by the express, it kills the ENTIRE network. The following happens:
1. The iphone loses wi-fi signal immediately. If I go into wi-fi settings, it sees my netwrok with FULL strength, but just remains in the 'spinning ball' state trying to connect. Seems to me that the express is unable to hand out an IP address or something.
2. If i open the airport utility on my Imac (in the study), the airport extreme has a yellow warning light and cannot be found via ethernet OR wi-fi. (The Imac is also Hard Wired from the Airport extreme in the lounge).
THe whole system requires a re-boot in order to work again.
If I re-boot the system, and leave a device near the airport express, it immediately receives signal, gets an IP address, and has an internet connection. Going back to the lounge causes no issues, it doesnt drop signal and still connects to the internet via the extreme. But as soon as I walk back into the study again - BOOM, everything drops.
I only purchased the new express because i was having EXACTLY the same issue with an older Airport extreme. No matter what I do, it just wont work via ethernet. I have tried all manner of settings. The ONLY setting that seems to work is to extend the wi-fi network. However, the rooms are too far apart, and this will require a third station in the middle, which i want to avoid (by the time the wifi network is extended across 3 decvices it is too slow).

Want to use Airport Express As A Wifi Extender/Repeater for Motorola Surfboard sbg6580 NO CABLES...

I am trying to simply extend my wifi network with Airport Express N. I am trying get my Motorola Surfboard sbg6580 to work with AEn, MOT sbg6580 has WDS and apple.com says "it does work with other routers" I guess I cant figure this out... I do not want to run 50 ft of ethernet cable and drill holes in floors, just simply extend network with AEn as repeater or extender. Is this possible? If so how?

Suggest that you check with the TW cable folks to see if they have a device that will do what you want.
If they cannot help, it is always best to use products from the same manufacturer to insure compatibility in applications like this, so if you have the make of your modem or router handy, you might check on the manufacturer's website to see if they offer what you need.

Can I use Airport Express to connect device that needs wired ethernet to my wireless network?

I have DirecTV, which uses a broadband adapter to get its on-demand content off the internet. Time was my internet modem was near enough to the DVR that I could have an ethernet cable to the adapter. Now they are about 40 feet apart across the kitchen and living room. Is there any way I could use an Airport Express at the DVR as a wireless node to feed to the adapter through its ethernet port?

If the AirPort Express is an 802.11n version, and it has been configured to "extend" an Apple network, or "join" another wireless network, the Ethernet port is enabled, so an Ethernet device could be connected to the port on the Express.
Keep in mind that this will not be a true Ethernet signal, since it will depend on the quality of the wireless link between the main router and the Express.
There may....or may not....be sufficient bandwidth if you intend to download high definition movies, and your wireless network may really slow down when downloads are occurring, so CRMDVM's suggestion to understand the store's return policy in advance would be a good thing to investigate.

I have the following routers setup up the same network and are working.
10.0.1.1 Airport Extreme (connected to hardline from IP)
10.0.1.2 Time Capsule 1 (extending network and providing internet connection to computer via ethernet)
10.0.1.3 Time Capsule 2 (extending network and providing internet connection to Xbox1)
10.0.1.4 Airport Express 1 (extending network and providing internet connection to Xbox2)
Not working correctly
10.0.1.43 Airport Express 2 (wanting to set this router up to extend network to plug into desktop)
The router seems to join the network fine and will show GREEN but doesn't show a similar IP address as the rest of the routers. It also doesn't provide any internet connection via ethernet to any computer, the network pref page says that it shows RED and that nothing is connected to the computer for internet but airport shows GREEN.
Reset the router multiple times, tried every which way of setting it up and no go. I also tried assigning it a IP and not using DHCP and gave it a 10.0.1.5 and still the same outcome.
Right now just at complete loss as to what to try next.

Sorry, the older version of the Express does not have the option to "extend a wireless network", which is the setting on the new Express that provides more wireless coverage and also enables the Ethernet port.
What you want to do can be done with a different setting..."participate in a WDS network" on both the Time Capsule and Express, but I am not recommending that you do this because WDS operates only in "g" wireless mode. Your Time Capsule would lose most of its performance in this setting and the network would slow down tremendously...defintely not what you want for gaming.
You'll have the best performance if you connect the PS3 directly to one of the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable. If it is not possible to run the cable, the next best performance option would be to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the Ethernet signal over the existing AC wiring in your home.

Can i use Airport Express as a range extender in conjunction with my standard (non-Apple) hub ?

I have poor Wifi signal upstairs in my house. Can Airport Express to extend that in conjunction with my current Hub (it's a Livebox - i currently live in France) ? Or do i need to run the Airport Express in conjunction with an Apple Hub ?

You can extend the Livebox, just not wirlessly as Apple's implementation of WDS only works with other Apple devices.
So you can either use an ethernet cable or as I do with my netgear router turn off the Livebox's WiFi (If that's possible) and use Airports to set up a separate wireless infrastructure. Get 2 APs and plug one directly via etherenet into the Livebox then use WDS to extend this to a second AP wirelessly.

Using Time Capsule to Wirelessly Receive Internet and then Extend Network via Ethernet

Our modem/router combo is located downstairs, and my computer that i want to get online is upstairs. I cannot get a ethernet from the modem to my computer to access the internet, so I wanted to try to use my Time Capsule to help me get online upstairs (not sure if this is possible...)
My idea was to have the Time Capsule receive the wireless signal and then connect the computer to the Time Capsule through an ethernet so that I may get the computer online. Essentially wireless connection in, wired connection out.
I've been playing around with the device for a while now, and can't seem to make this work. Has anyone used the Time Capsule in this fashion? Is it even possible? If not, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my computer online?

The Apple solution might well need Two devices to extend range.
You would retain your ISP router/modem however would go into settings and TURN OFF wireless on that device - you can do this in the Java Web based control panels on most routers.
Now you sling the Ethernet cable between that router and a purchased Time Capsule device locally and set this up to create a new local Wifi network (Replacing that of the ISP supplied router) . Being a dual band device and being able to broadcast both over 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz frequency base bands simultaneously you could well see improved performance and range straight away.
However if not then you are going to need a further device an Airport Express set up in bridged mode somewhere between the Time Capsule and your upstairs rooms. Your may have to try various power points and locations to get coverage required.
Further Airport Express devices can be added in bridged mode as required to cover blind spots, however remember each additional device degrades the overall network performance somewhat.
Again this will get quite costly.

Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) a 802.11n model? If it is, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge or ProxySTA. This would allow the AX to join another wireless network and have its Ethernet port enabled for wired clients, like the Xbox 360.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility.

Trying to extend network via ethernet

Trying to add another Extreme to our network to assist with the number of wireless clients on our existing Extreme. Trying to add the 2nd Extreme via Ethernet and extend the same network SSID and all other info.
After setting up and adding it shows that it is extending via wireless, and when connecting to the WAN or LAN ports it wants to take the entire network down.
Using 5th Gen Extreme. Airport Utility 6.2, and all devices have 7.6.3 firmware. Already have 2 Express units on the system extending the network wirelessly where we do not have Ethernet ran. Those have been working for over a year.
Any thoughts on what we are missing when setting this up where we can't plug another Extreme in via Ethernet? In the setup I don't see an option for extending via ethernet.....

Close AirPort Utility if it is open
Disconnect the Ethernet cable to the new AirPort Extreme
Hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort Extreme for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Make sure that the Ethernet cable is connecting from a LAN <-> port on the "main" router to the WAN "O" port on the new AirPort
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a minute for the heading of New AirPort Base Station to appear
Just below that, click on the AirPort (an AirPort Express is pictured in the example)
AirPort Setup will open automatically and take a minute to analyze the network....then announce that the AirPort Extreme will be configured to "extend" your current network.
Enter a device name for the AirPort Extreme and click Next
AirPort Setup will take a minute to configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
Test the network and report on your results

Can I use AirPort Express as booster/extender to LinkSys router signal?

I have LinkSys N router (which I got free, else would've bought AirPort), its signal isn't strong enough in office room. Can I use AirPort Express as a booster/extender? Some sources say Express can only talk to another Express, others say it can communicate with the LinkSys. Which is it? I don't want to spend the money for two Expresses unless I have no choice (very limited budget nowadays).
I've been hassling with this for over a month, and I'm extremely frustrated.

Most likely no. That is because most non-Apple router's implementation of WDS is not compatible ... and this is true the other way around. It is true that some early Linksys models, mainly the WRT-54 series were compatible, but I have not seen anything since then that is.

Using an Express to create a closed network

I have a home automation/control system in place. All of the touch panels communicate via ethernet. Three are wireless devices using 802.11g to hit a WAP which is then cabled to the head end processor.
One of the WAPS on the system died last night. (I did temporarily slap in an old linksys WAP4400 which worked after pointing the wireless devices to the net network name) but I want to replace that closed network with 2 air port expresses. (by closed i don't mean hidden but rather a network that doest have a connection to the internet and no modem connected)
I'm wondering if should set up one express to share a public ip and the other in bridge mode or since this network does not hit the internet and is a closed network is there a more appropriate setup.
Also can two ABExp be set to create a wireless network, in bridge mode and with the same ssid and security settings or does one have to be set to share a public ip address or some other setting?

Are these AirPort Express devices connected to a hub via ethernet cable connections, both wireless, etc.?
You can do what you want, you'll just need to click the "ignore" box when AirPort Utility informs you that you don't have an Internet connection, there's no ethernet cable connected (if applicable), etc.
