Use Album Artists causes repeat values of Various Artists

The obvious implication of the new *Use Album Artist* feature in the Colum Browser is that only Album Artist values will be listed and further that each will be listed only once, sorted by the value of Album Artist or Sort Album Artist. It may be that the previous build (where the feature was introduced) did just this but I have noticed that the current build with Group Compilations turned off will, for example, list the value Various Artists at multiple locations in the Artist column in the browser.
For example, say we have a playlist with albums by Alice, Charlie, Eric & Grace together with a compilation featuring artists Bob, Dave & Fiona with an album artist value of "Various Arists".
With *Use Album Artists* turned on and *Group Compilations* turned off I would expect I would expect the artist panel in the column browser to read:
Alice
Charlie
Eric
Grace
Various Artists
but what we actualy get is:
Alice
Various Artists
Charlie
Various Artists
Eric
Various Artists
Grace
In other words each different value used for Album Artist with compilations, Various Artist, Original Cast, etc. may be listed multiple times at multiple locations within the Artist column instead of just once as expected.
So, is it just me? Anybody still on 9.1.0.79 or a Mac build care to confirm if they see the same?

Compilations need a value for album artist to keep them connected on an iPhone as I've noted elsewhere. However exploring the problem further it isn't even about compilations & various artists, it was just working with them that brought it to my attention. A more accurate description of the problem is:
With the new *Use Album Artists* feature turned on the artist pane fails to re-sort when you change the value of Album Artist or Sort Album Artist and does not update until you close and re-open iTunes.
E.g. Change "Albert King" to "King, Albert" in either Album Artist, Sort Album Artist or both and the entry in the Artists pane will stay put under A. Close iTunes and re-open and it will have moved to K.
I have already sent feedback with a link to this thread. Again it would be useful if any Mac or Win 9.1.0.79 users could confirm if they see the same behaviour.

  • Can I use album artist rather than Artist on my iPod160?

The Artist selection on the iPod has its problems as "Album Artist" is not always the same as "Artist". I know I can correct the Cover Flow problems with Artist View by use of the Sort Artist option but I do have a few questions.
I would rather display the Album Artist rather than Artist. Is this possible? I can do it in ITunes but cannot seem to do it on the iPod itself.
Also, is it possible to do mass changes on Sort Artist rather than hit "next", paste the change, etc. Everything I try to mass change, Sort Artist is not an option.

    Hi,
Unfortunately, the 'album artist' field is ignored on the iPod (I hope it one day will be 'solved'). If you mark albums with multiple artists as 'compilation', the album artist in iPod coverflow is automatically set to 'various artists'. And I haven't found a way to mass-edit the sort fields either

  • ReportViewer Total column InScope causes repeating values in Innermost group

I have a table which has only one cell. Inside that cell it has a rectangle (design purposes only) and inside that rectangle there is my main table. Primary table is used for paging, so it has one group. Innermost table is for data view. The problem is,
that if i have ANY expression containing InScope("Matrix1_Group1") in Total column in the innermost table, i get repeating values in that table. Numbers are ok, but rows titles are repeating.
    +-----------+------------+---------+----------+
    | Country | Producer | [Month] | Total |
    +-----------+------------+---------+----------+
    | [Country] | [Producer] | SUM(Q) | <<Expr>> |
    +-----------+------------+---------+----------+
    | Total | SUM(Q) | <<Expr>> |
    +------------------------+---------+----------+
This is the sample of my innermost table (tried my best. not allowed to insert images). I i use InScope("Matrix1_Group1") in ANY (value, Color, BackgroundColor) expression in Total column, Producer column values are repeating (the first value
    is repeated in all rows).
Sample expression from cell in Total column is: =IIF(InScope("Matrix1_Group1"), Fields!Producer.Value/SUM(Fields!Producer.Value, "Matrix1_Group1"), "100%")
    More information abou this problem.
It only occurs if two conditions are met: repor has paging and InScope returns true. I have to make pages in report and each page contains table and some other blocks. I use List component to create a list and use grouping. Then i put a table inside. If
table is outside any element, everything works perfectly, but if it is inside list, table, matrix or something similar allowing to create pages, the problem occurs.
Also, if InScope allways returns FALSE and none condition is met - there is no problem. But if any InScope return TRUE - i have repeating values in innermost group.

  • Using cfloop to ignore repeated values - help

I have a query that joins two tables for a price comparison
site. the first table holds information about a product. the second
table holds store specific information about a product. so a
product in the first table is unique. In the second table the
product is repeated depending on how many stores stock the product.
When I go through CFoutput the product is being duplicated

Add ORDER BY product into your query then use the group

  • ITunes 12: use 'Artist' name in "Artists view" rather than 'Album Artist'?

I.e. if I have an album with artist name X and album artist name Y it seems to sort by Y (the album artist name) in "Artists" view (i.e. the one with the pictures on the left)…is there a way to make it use the artist name (X) instead?
Say artist is "Johann Sebastian Bach", and album artist is "Sviatoslav Richter" (i.e. performer), I would rather it came in under "Johann Sebastian Bach" in the artists view, rather than "Sviatoslav Richter".
…the obvious solution is to switch X with Y, while laborious it does work, however, the problem is then when you have an album were a performer plays a bunch of different composers, this messes things up (breaks up the album in "Albums" and just makes a mess in general)…
In "Songs" view you can just switch between "Use Album Artists" and normal Artists…but in "Artists" view there appears to be no such setting and it seems Album Artist overrides Artist...

  • Issues with setting "Album Artist" in iTunes 9.2.5.1 on Windows 7

I googled this for a while but haven't been able to find this issues mentioned anywhere else yet. Here's what's happening: I am importing CDs to iTunes 9.2.1.5 on Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit) using MP3 Encoder > Higher Quality. All is well except for a few CDs where I'd like to set an overall Album Artist. Example: Tony Bennett's Duets: An American Classic. When importing the CD it shows up under "Various Artists" since "Artist" is always Tony Bennett plus whoever he sings with. To make sure the album shows up under Tony Bennett in the library I click on the album and set "Album Artist" to Tony Bennett. That, however results in changing the "Artist" field as well now so all fields say Tony Bennett, which shouldn't happen, "artists" should stay unchanged. I tried this with several albums and the behavior is always the same.
I also tried the back door by going into the actual folder of the album in Windows then change the MP3 details and populate "Album Artist" there for all tracks within the album. Once I re=open iTunes it registers the change only for the first track but not the rest. So I re-import the folder into iTunes and then it does take "Album Artist" and also leaves "Artist" unchanged but for some reason has now lots of numbers under "Comments". There seems to be a mismatch of the field attributes between iTunes and Windows for MP3 files (possibly other formats as well). Wondering if anyone else has observed this or if I am just missing some setting.

FYI iTunes handling of ID3v2.4 tags seems to have some issues as well... Translating genres into their numeric codes for one thing. I'd recommend sticking with v2.3.
I'm not exactly sure from your posts what you were seeing. Was the artist being changed in Get Info. after you'd set Album Artist, or was it changing elsewhere on screeen? iTunes 9(.1 I think) added an option *View > Column Browser > Use Album Artists*. Unfortunately this doesn't change the heading of the column so that you "see" it is now only listing album artists but that's what it does.
There is also an occasional issue with the current build in that sometimes changes to Album Artist or Sort Album Artist fail to be reflected properly in the column browser until iTunes is closed and reopened.

  • Remote App 3.0 - Album Artist

iTunes itself (on the Mac and Windows) as well as most if not all iPods and iPads have the ability to browse the music library using Album Artist rather than just plain Artist. It's a setting in the preferences menu. The Remote App 2.* was the sole iOS music playback application that did not have this ability and it was a feature many of us looked forward to in the new release.
And now we have Remote App 3.0 and as far as I can see, there's no way to browse by Album Artist. Or am I missing something?
This may seem like a trivial issue but when you have a big library including compilation albums with various and sundry artists you're really not that interested in seeing the details of, it becomes a real nuisance! In Artist mode you end up having to scroll through a whole string of names you really don't want to see.
Is there in fact a way to do this in Remote App 3.0?
And if not, I'd like to please with those of you in the Apple organization to get this sorted out. Don't you use your own products?!

    Issue confirmed.
    Resolved with remote update 3.0.1

  • Artist vs Album Artist sort for Cover Scroll

I have a huge library of Cast/Soundtrack albums and have taken much time to sort each track by 1000's of artists. And then use new Album Artist to head each compliation as "Soundtrack" "Original Cast" et al... But for some reason certain discs are read in this new Album Artist while others either default to 1st Artist on Track 01 or default to end of Scroll under Various artists - despite my relabeling??? (even though new label does read on the new title)

sidssp is correct. This is how "Album Artist" is intended to be used. But there are two problems with this IMO:
    1. Having "Ray Charles & Norah Jones" and "Ray Charles & James Taylor", etc on the individual tracks as the "Artist" and "Ray Charles" on all the tracks as the "Album Artist" is cool when one is searching the library. However, when one is browsing the library this is a major PITA. The browser control keys off "Artist" ... and there is no way to switch it to use "Album Artist". When I search for "Ray Charles" I want to find any track he is on ... regardless of whether he is the main artist or featured artist. I can then select the exact track I want from the results. But when I browse for "Ray Charles" I am looking for a Ray Charles album(s). Unfortunately, the Artist list shows me "Ray Charles & Norah Jones", "Ray Charles & James Taylor", etc. Now I can select all of the Artist entries and get a list of all the albums that I want, but this is really a pain and unintuitive. Which leads me to the bigger problem ...
    2. The iPod does not utilize "Album Artist" at all. If one utilizes the "Artist" field to reflect the main artist and featured artists as intended, then there is no way to quickly locate the main artist on an album, and then select all or individual albums by that artist. Which in my case effectively renders the new "Album Artist" field useless because there simply is no workaround.
    OAW
PS: This is nearly as stupid as introducing playlist folders in iTunes and not having any sort of iPod support for the feature!

  • Album Artists Question

So recently I decided to start using Album artists to identify albums that are splits. However once i added the album artist to the album it duplicates the artist with the same exact albums/tracks,etc. on itunes. So for example, I recently added the Beirut/Realpeople split to my collection so when i added the album artist as Beirut/Realpeople it shows on my column browser for artists: Beirut, Beirut/Realpeople, Beirut. Also Realpeople doesn't even show up in the Artists column. Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

    If your Artists list reads:
    Beirut
    Beirut/Realpeople
    Beirut
Then it would seem that you've either tried to use the *Sort Artist* or *Sort Album Artist* fields to link these things together or have some inconsistency in the fields that makes Beirut appear twice. In some other media players, e.g. Windows Media Player, including two artists in the Artists field, e.g. Artist 1/Artist 2 creates three entries, Artist 1, Artist 1/Artist 2 & Artist 2. In such systems selecting Artist 1 will show the tracks by Artist 1 and the collaboration Artist 1/Artist 2. That's not the way it works in iTunes - Artist 1/Artist 2 is a unique value with no relationship to Artist 1 or Artist 2 and indeed the Artist menu will only get entries for Artist 1 or Artist 2 if you have tracks creditied to them on an individual basis.
A quick google suggests that Realpople is a side project of Beirut's frontman Zach Condon. Assuming your issue is with the double EP *Beirut - March of the Zapotec/Realpeople - Holland* then my approach would be to split this into two separate items:
*March of the Zapotec* (Artist & Album Artist: Beirut)
    1 "El Zócalo" - 0:29
    2 "La Llorona" - 3:34
    3 "My Wife" - 2:11
    4 "The Akara" - 3:54
    5 "On a Bayonet" - 1:41
    6 "The Shrew" - 3:44
    and
Holland (Artist & Album Artist: Realpeople)
1 "My Night with the Prostitute from Marseille" - 3:07
2 "My Wife, Lost in the Wild" - 3:13
    3 "Venice" - 4:02
    4 "The Concubine" - 3:28
    5 "No Dice" - 5:24
Using the same artwork for each or, if possible, replacing the artwork on Holland with the original artwork for that EP.
Where an album is actually a collaboration between two different artists/bands I prefer to use the form Artist 1 & Artist 2 as the album artist. Where some tracks on an album feature additional artists this information is better placed in the Name field in the form *Name \[Feat. Guest\]* so thatboth Artist & Album Artist are consistent across all tracks of the album. Read my article on Grouping tracks into albums for the reasoning and more advice.

  • Anyway to turn off 'album artist' shown in library list?

Used to be, only the 'Artist' was shown in the library list view. which is exactly what I want. Now, both the 'Artist' and the 'Album Artist' show up in the library list view, which I hate. I don't see a switch anywhere, but I thought I'd ask...anyone know a way to get JUST the 'Artist' to display?
I really wish if Apple was going to change this stuff that they at least give us ways to control them.

that will turn it off in the songlist,
That will turn it off wherever you are viewing.
Select the library then iTunes menu View > uncheck *Use Album Artists*

  • Having downloaded update 10.5, the artists section of my iPod no longer recognises artists who feature on compilation albums. Instead it groups them under the album artist, ie various artists. Any suggestions?

Having downloaded iTunes update 10.5, my iPod no longer recognises in the artists section those artists who feature on various artists' compilation albums. Instead the iPod groups them under various artists, and, if you are looking for a particular artist, who only features on a compilation, you have to remember or search to see which various artist album they feature on - all very frustrating, especially as it worked OK before the update. So far I've not updated any more - so I've not taken 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 because 10.5 caused me so many problems, but I'm wondering if the solution could be in those updates
I've tried amending the iTunes library artist and album artist, and it is possible to get the iPod to recognise the artists, but the downside is that the library then removes the artist from the album, and you then have to play those tracks individually
Has anyone suffered the same problem and, if so, has a solution been found?

  • ITunes album view no longer allows me to jump to an album artist using keyboard

In album view, I've always been able to use the keyboard to jump to an album artist. For instance, upon hitting "dr" my list would jump down to Dr. Dog.  Upon the last update, I believe, this feature stopped working. The only way I can do this now is by scrolling. Is it possible to turn this back on or do I need to start using a different view to browse my music?
    Thanks

It's working ok for me on my Mac (iTunes version 11.2.2). What happens when you start type part of or the full artist name when in album view ? If I have left-hand sidebar enabled then I need to click on the right-hand side of the screen first so that it becomes active, but either with or without the sidebar showing typing part of an artist name takes me to their first album

When viewing multiple item information, I was wondering what the checkboxes next to "Artist", "Album Artist", etc... are used for.

When checked, it means that you are going to apply whatever is in the box to all of the selected items.

  • Can iTunes use the Album/Artist/Trackname info in MP3 Files?

I have many files with ID3v1 info about album/artist/and track name in them. Some are MP3, others are WAV files with this ID3 data appended. Is there any way to have iTunes use this data when importing the files?

    For the MP3s, yes.
    For the WAVs, no.
When you add a WAV to the library, iTunes picks up the filename and displays it as the Title.

I think it looks at the Artist field, if Album Artist is blank.  So, for the songs on affected albums, you can try removing the "Various Artists" entry for Album Artist field (in iTunes).  Try this on one affected album, to see if it does what you want.
NOTE:  In iTunes, you can select multiple songs at the same time (such as all songs on an album), do a Get Info (right-click selection - Get Info) on selection, and remove the entry for Album Artist for all selected songs at the same time, from the Info window.
