Use another computer's DVD or CD drive

Hi all.
Both iMacs are on the same network.
One new iMac (no optical drive!!?!).
One other iMac (late 2010), 10.7.5, on which I have activated System Prefs/Sharing/DVD or CD sharing.  This iMac is visible in the other's Finder window.
I want to copy a new music CD into my iTunes library on the new iMac.  I insert the CD in the old Mac, but nothing happens:  in a Finder window, on the drive-less iMac, there is a device, in the sidebar, named "Remote Disc", however, nothing appears here.
Am I doing something wrong?  Is the only option to get and attach an external CD drive???
Thanks.

Hi BDAqua.
Sure, the CD does show up on the old iMac.  Prefs (on old iMac) are set to launch iTunes for a music CD, iPhoto for a picture CD and DVD Player for a video DVD.
What I did to get around this problem was to copy the contents of the CD into a folder, share that folder and then I was able to access it from the new iMac.  Then I imported from the folder to iTunes (on new iMac).
Very cumbersome.  And this might not work for all CDs/DVDs...
I do have an external drive somewhere which I never installed.  Not even sure what kind of connection it has (FW???).  And I don't like the idea of cluttering my (physical) desktop with it...
And there's still the problem of not knowing why the "Use another computer's DVD or CD drive" didn't work...
(Sigh...)

My 2009 MacBook meets all the criteria for the Snow Leopard upgrade, but my dvd drive is broken. Every time insert the dvd it is spit out (it is the same for audio cd's as well). I have tried repairing the drive and installing snow leopard using an external dvd drive (with no luck). I need a simple guide for using another computer to do the upgrade. I created a slide show on my work computer and placed many photos and movies in my work computer's Media Browser. Want to use another computer (laptop) to give the presentation and therefore change location of slide show. I also want to optimize a movie for Keynote, so it's not too large a file. Please help.

Graphic, sound and video files are copied into the Keynote file, but make sure Keynote > Preferences - include sound and movies check box is ticked.
If you have added additional fonts they will need be changed to reflect what is on the destination machine.
If the other machine has a different Keynote version, ensure the same transitions and effects are available.

    Hi Legauche,
You can install and activate Creative Cloud desktop applications on two computers, regardless of operating system, for the individual associated with the Creative Cloud membership. See the product license agreements page for more information. Install the CC apps on the second machine and use the applications.

I used another computer a while back to get music and now their account is not allowing me to add music onto my ipod, from my computer, on my account.

What computer did yu last sync with?  Yu can only sync with one computer/iTunes library.
You can however manage musiic amon different computers.
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
If you need more help please provide more detail on what youd have done and tried on both computers.

iPod touches or any iDevices from Apple sync only to one computer. If you sync to a different computer, all your music will be replace with the music from the new computer's iTunes. If the music were purchased from iTunes, you can re-download them again otherwise the music on iPod touch will be deleted. Do you have iTunes backup?

  • Moving itunes from external hard-drive to another and using another comput

    Hi,
This has probably been posted before but i couldn't find it.
My itunes works on another computer, with the library (Edit->Preferences->Itunes location as g:\itunes), this includes the xml files for the library.
I've now got a new laptop and external hard-drive and want to move the library onto the new hard-drive and use it on the new laptop.
I think i can copy the itunes folder from old hard-drive onto new one, then point the itunes install on the new laptop to the new harddrive and it should pick it up?
    Any ideas?
    Matt

    Welcome to AD!
+this includes the xml files for the library.+
Does this also include the important itunes database file, the one with the ITL file extension?
If so, your idea should work. Use Windows Explorer to copy the ITL & music files/folders over to the new exHD.
Connect the new exHD to your laptop and make sure Windows sees it as drive G:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844
That is a very important step. Otherwise, iTunes will lose all the paths to the music.
Now start itunes on the laptop by pressing *and holding* the shift key. Tell it to use the ITL file on the G: drive. Then set your iTunes preoferences to have any future additions go to the G: drive music folder.

  • Restoring OS using another computer

    Hi,
    I have three iMacs.
    1. An original iMac 233MHz G3, tray load CD, no firewire, OS 8.6
    2. An iMac 600 MHz G3, slot load CD *(not working)*, firewire, OS 9.2 and OS 10.4
    3. And an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, slot loading CD/DVD, firewire, OS 10.6
I want to erase and restore the 2nd iMac but I need to use the CD-ROM from my other computers.
Is there a way to connect the computers so I can use my _Software Restore CD_ in the first or third computers to erase and restore the second computer?
The first computer does not have firewire so I assume it does not have Target Disk Mode capabilities.
The third computer will not boot from the OS 9 Software Restore CD.
    Thanks,
    Oceanstorm

    Hi, Oceanstorm -
Great - glad you were able to get that done.
What is the difference between Software Restore and Software Install?
The Software Install CD installs a System Folder plus a standard set of utilities (Disk First Aid, Drive Setup, etc.). It does not install other programs, such as ones which may have been bundled with the machine when it was originally purchased.
    • The installer on this uses an array of files contained in a special archive called a Tome as its source.
    • This CD can be used for repair purposes, and is able to do a Clean Install of the OS if that should be necessary (in OS 9, a Clean Install removes nothing. Instead, it installs a brand new System Folder, renames the old one to Previous System Folder, and does not much else.). Many of them can also do a Universal install of the OS.
    • The capabilities available using a Software Install CD are much the same as using a retail Install CD, except for the limitatiuon of what machines it will work on. In addition to being able to do a Clean Install, it can be used to do a selective re-install of particular software.
    • The utility TomeViewer can also be used to manually extract chosen software items from the Tome on the CD.
    TomeViewer
    How to use TomeViewer
The Software Restore CD is designed to revert the hard drive's contents to match the drive as it was originally shipped when the machine was new, includinng any programs bundled by Apple with the machine.
    • The installer on this disk uses a disk image of the original drive, copying the full preconfigured contents of the disk image to the hard drive. There are no options as to what can be installed.
    • Although this disk can also be used to do some repairs if needed, it can not be used to do a Clean Install of the OS, nor can it be used to do a selective re-install of software items.

Why can I use a model-specifc version of OS 9.1 disk on another computer?
I'm going to assume you meant to enter "Why can I not use...", which is a correct assessment.
Different models of Macs have different hardware. Even two machines of the same class (such as iMacs) which are adjacent in model release dates may have different hardware. This difference may apply just to the processor, or it may also extend to other hardware items inside.
The retail OS 9 Install CDs contain files suitable to match the hardware on any model Mac capable of running that OS version. The installer is programmed to determine which particular files are needed for the machine doing the install, and to install those files.
The original disks which came with a machine do not have any file choices other than those needed by the machine they shipped with; thus, they are model-specific to that particular machine model. Most of the time they are not capable of even booting a different model, much less installing on it.
Your iMac 600 was released after the commercial release of OS 9 (after the release of the retail OS 9.1 Install CD). Apparently it needed some files newer than those that are available on the retail OS 9.1 Install CD, yet OS 9.2 was not yet ready for release. As a result, it came with a newer version of OS 9.1 (probably incorporating Finder v. 9.1.1 instead of 9.1, or other similar change) and can not use a retail OS 9.1 Install CD.

If I am not using OS9 via the OSX classic boot is there a need to update to 9.2? (I will have OS 10.4 on the same machine.)
If you are not going to use OS 9 as Classic under OSX, then you need not update it. If you do intend to use OS 9 as Classic under OSX 10.4, you should probably update it to OS 9.2.1 or even to 9.2.2 - OSX 10.4 apparently is not happy using OS 9.1 as Classic.
If you keep the OS 9 install as OS 9.1, at least update the Startup Disk control panel to v. 9.2.1. The version of that control panel that comes with OS 9.1 and earlier is not coded to recognize OSX as a viable OS. Updating that control panel will facilitate switching from one OS to the other. There is a download specifically for that (by the way, this replacement control panel works with older OS versions, too, at least as far back as OS 8.6) -

  • HT1414 is it possible to update your ipad without backing it up or transferring purchases when using another computer

Is it possible to update your ipad 2 to the latest software without backing it up or transferring purchases to another computer other then your own?

What iOS version are you on ? If 5+ then as I said, you can do it directly on the iPad via Settings > General > Software Update.
If you are on iOS 4 then you will need to connect to your computer's iTunes and transfer purchases and do a backup - updating to iOS 5+ from 4 or below will backup up the iPad, wipe the iPad, install iOS 5.1, and restore your backup and iTunes media content (if you don't transfer purchases and backup then that content will no longer be on the iPad after the update). • Itunes- using another computer

    Hi all,
I have been using my computer to sync and add songs onto my ipod,
however, I have switched to using a laptop and since using a different itunes.
How do I add songs onto my Ipod from my new itunes ( laptop) without deleting the songs belonging to the old itunes or adding songs from my other Itunes to my current one?
    Thank you

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys. On a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7.3 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
However the safest thing to do if you want to connect to multiple computers regularly is to change the update preference to "Manually manage music and videos":
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Using another computer then the one I orignally registered on.

My buddy setup his Ipod on my computer because I have high speed internet and he didn't. Now he has high speed and will be using his computer instead of mine. What will he have to do?? Will he lose the music on his Ipod when he plugs it into the computer?? Any help would be great...I am a newbee at the whole Ipod thing.

    Hi jaman1,
This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202 provides detailed information about using the iPod with multiple computers.
He can leave it set to automatically sync which would erase the iPod and automatically sync content from iTunes on his computer. He can also sync the content manually which would not erase any content but allow him to add more. Either way iTunes will prompt him before it erases anything.

  • Running Win7 on my Macbook Air Smoothly...but how do I load a program using another Mac's dvd drive?

    Hi,
Any ideas on how to get dvd sharing running between two macs when your goal is to get the program loaded onto a macbook air running win7? I can't find an equivalent to the mac-mac disc sharing that I have on the OSX partition.
    Thanks,
    Hanz

i wish that was the answer....it only works if you are running OSX and targeting another OSX drive, or running OSX targeting a PC drive.
My macbook air is running win7, so I am interested in running Win7 and targeting an OSX drive. Unfortunately, remote disc does not run on windows.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Thanks
