Use Aperture for Screen Savers

Not sure what happened.  I completely lost my choice of using my Aperture Library for Screen Savers.  I'm not even given the option anymore.  Is there anyone out there who knows why this might be?  Yesterday my screen saver was showing my photos from Aperture; today it shows National Geographic photos.

I'm having the exact same issue.... but I'm not getting iphoto or Aperture options. I just upgraded to Mavericks 2 days prior and before I did the upgrade I was using a folder from my aperture library.
Any advice... or is this something that takes time to load and I just have to give is some time... as in hours or days as my aperture library is large??
Thanks

  • Using Aperture for collecting and adjusting scans?

I am in the process of digitizing a few thousand LPs, DATs and even CDs. I scan all the covers and use them in a FileMaker database as well as iTunes.
Does it make any sense to get and use Aperture as the holding place for these? I know about Bridge and QPict and GraphicConverter has a nice browser too. But I'm thinking about the organizational abilities of Aperture as well as the nice image adjustment corrections it provides.
Is this overkill? Does anyone here use Aperture for managing images other than RAW photos?

Commentary (including mine) on this topic is at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=753016&tstart=25
Bridge I personally do not think much of.
Since you own Photoshop and Filemaker I would just use those two apps, scanning into PSCS2 for editing then copying into FMP. Build your keywords in FMP and have each image have a unique I.D. number. The full resolution scans live elsewhere, identified by the I.D. number.
Put each image into a FMP container field, but before copying into FMP first reduce the image size as much as possible for your needs to keep the DB as small as possible. Do note that once you start the process you cannot make the images larger; you need to go find the original for that.
FMP 8 has a way to reference images without importing them but I have not used it yet. That may be appropriate for your purposes so you should check it out.

  • I'm using Aperture for photos on my Mac, I have near 450G of raw photos and I'm running short on space, what is the best option to imrpove proformance and increase space.?

I use Aperture on my Mac and have approx 450Gigs of raw files for my photos and growing. I'm running short on space and system is starting to slow down. What are the best ooptions to improve performance and increase space space.?

important to note that what you are talking about is not a backup
It is simple to ahve your iPhoto library on an external drive -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
And you can have multiple i{Photo libraries - one can be on your internal drive and other on an external drive  --  iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  is a very helpful tool for managing multiple libraries

  • Aperture 3.3 Upgrade, still not actually managed to use Aperture for anything!

I eagerly downloaded 3.3 as soon as it was available - the idea of a shared library/format between iPhoto and Aperture is great - sharing Faces/Places etc.
But I haven't been able to do anything with it yet!  After the initial library conversion, once I'd gone into Aperture it started generating previews for my entire collection - about 50,000 images - not sure why this was necessary - since the previews were there before the upgrade.
I've had the activity window more or less permanently open since I did the upgrade last week, and there are still over 8,000 previews to go - hopefully by the weekend it will have finished and I'll actually be able to try out some of the new features.
While doing this preview generation, Aperture hangs periodically (and never seems to recover requiring a force quit and restart) when it tries simultaenously to sync the Facebook albums.
I mention all this because unlike with the previous version, when if there was some activity to carry out, if you started to use Aperture, the activities would pause - this doesn't seem to happen now - or at least the application is so busy with the background activity, that it doesn't seem possible to kick off an action that might make it suspend background activity.
Doesn't look like a stable release to me so far - although maybe after this questionable preview re-generation I'll find a different story - has anyone else encountered this behaviour?

Same here.  I was able to open the Activity window and pause the generation of Previews.  I did this in order to access some of the Images in the Library.  I don't advise doing any work with it, though, until it is completely stable.  On restart, it will again commence generating Previews (and in my case, thumbnails).
I don't know what the problem is, or why it happened, or whether once it finishes generating Previews it will be stable.
Extrapolating, it seems it will take about four days of solid processing to generate all the Previews.  Ouch.

  • IPhoto used to be available for Screen Savers, no more?

I used to be able in Preferences>Screen Saver to point to my iPhoto library, now (and I don't know what changes I made that could have caused this) the iPhoto libraries are greyed out.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Terrence, that did the trick!
But running Disk Utility, I noted two unexpected things:
    1. the left panel lists a disk-icon called HL-DT-ST-DVDRW GA 11N; when the pointer hovers over it, it gives this description: Empty internal optical device.
    2. in the First Aid Tab: the button "Repair Disk" is greyed out (only Verify Disk Permissions, Verify Disk and Repair Disk Permissions are options.
Any ideas why this is so.
As always, many thanks for being so patient, but while OSX is infinitely better than what I had to suffer through in the Windows world, it still holds plenty of surprises.

  • Solution to using Aperture for ordering books from other companies?

I am a professional photographer who has been using Photoshop CS3 to design and output books for Shared Ink, WHCC and others. While SharedInk does accept PDF files, they're complicated to construct in just the right format. WHCC will only accept properly-formatted JPEGs.
Of course, Aperture has its own notion of how to generate PDFs.
While Photoshop will open the pages of the PDF as individual JPEGs, it's less than optimal because the JPEGs will end up being re-compressed when they're saved, potentially impacting quality. So my objective was to somehow turn the Aperture PDF directly into JPEGs.
Well, it turns out that the JPEG files are embedded neatly into the PDFs that Aperture creates. And if you're careful, you can cleanly separate the JPEGs themselves into separate files. I found a utility that has a simple Drag & Drop interface which does just that. I haven't tested it extensively, but it worked in my very unscientific test.
So I end up with a folder of JPEG files in the highest possible quality which I can then upload directly to my lab.

    What?
Of course a JPG can include text. Like you can insert text in a picture in photoshop. ANd then save the picture with text as a JPG.
I didn't make myself clear. JPEG files are just pixels. Of course they can contain anything. But the "text" in a JPEG file is not editable as text after it's been saved as a JPEG.
But PDF files are loose containers that can contain pixels (as JPEG, TIFF, or otherwise), text (as actual text with fonts, etc), Postscript objects (like Illustrator files), and even hyperlinks and whatnot.
The reason all this is relevant to Aperture is when Aperture outputs a book, it puts every page into a PDF. If you don't use captions or text, then the page is strictly in JPEG format within the PDF. the Xpdf program can then properly extract it.

  • Using Premiere for screen captures

    Hi Gang-
Would love to use Premiere to simply capture my screen actions along with my narrated audio so that I can take advantage of the speech-to-text functionality for print and search capabilities. Does anyone know if this is possible? Is there a way to tell Premiere to use my screen as the recording device? I've used SnapZPro X and Captivate on Mac and Windows respectively, but it's that speech-to-text functionality that I'd love to take advantage of in Premiere. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

    Paul-
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I saw that camtasia software, and while it looks impressive I really need something that has the speech-to-text capabilities. I have MacDictate (Dragon) but the Premiere CS4 has speech to text that actually syncs up to the timeline of the sequence. So if I search on "bulldog" and I have one occurrence of it somewhere in the middle of my sequence than I could take the user right to that point in the move. Catch my drift? I'd hate to have to film my screen from my camera but I may end up doing that in this case.... maybe someone else will come up with something clever. If I get a stroke of genius (very unlikely at this late hour) I'll be sure to post. Thanks again for your input.

  • Better to use Aperture or FCPX for import?

I am starting from scratch with FCPX. I have a MBA with a portable thunderbolt drive, and right now this is my primary. I have an older 2008 iMac, and this is my workstation I use for everything when I am at home. I'm on the road more than at home and do most of my FCPX work on the road.
I use Aperture (and iPhoto) primarily for media management. Now that it imports movies from my camcorder and DSLR, it's really the primary app we use. A huge side benefit is the disk savings offered over importing everything in iMovie.
Are there any drawbacks to just using Aperture for importing? I can still use these videos, and convert them to prores, etc. with FCPX as needed for video projects, correct?
85% of the iMovie (or now FCPX) stuff is just to share it online, send to family, etc. But the 15% of the projects are important ones, which is why I'm investing in FCPX. I don't always know when I import the footage if it is going to be included in an important project or not. Housekeeping-wise, it seems like the best way is to use Aperture and avoid the large files until I need them in FCPX.
Seems obvious, but I know little so far about FCPX.
    Thanks for any insight,
    Jack

I come from the video end and I feel that it's best to import video into a video application and stills into a stills application. If you import the video into Apeerture you still have to get it into FCP. You then drag the video into FCP to edit it. You're doubling up the file, because FCP will want it in the event folder not the Aperture library. When you drag a still into FCP it will remain linked to the Aperture library. Currently FCP imports the JPEG thumbnail from Aperture not the RAW file BTW. If you want the RAW image you have to export it from Aperture and bring it into FCP.

  • Best use of Aperture for Graphic Designer

I am new to Aperture. I had been browsing my images and photos in Bridge but doing all editing in Photoshop. In Aperture I will be using Referenced instead of Managed.
I am a graphic designer, and edit, create, handle a large amount of images which is my primary usage. I also have need for comparison, as well as archival browsing of the work in one place. I am handling stock images, images I create, client jobs, etc. My jobs often involve photos sent to me by the client, and any photos I take (camera or iPhone) can be downloaded to camera app or even iPhoto, or Aperture now if one is better than the other.
I am aware that Aperture does not mirror the Finder therefore when I make any changes (either in or outside of Aperture) or add anything to the folder in Finder, Aperture is not updated. Is there any way to have this be in sync with the content on the hard drive? Or just import the corrections back into Aperture? or does it matter?
So I am wondering whether to just use Aperture for new image / photo editing and adjustments then export the corrected photos to the hard drive? Then for any future browsing of old content use Bridge?
The other thought rolling around in my head is since I already keep a well-organized folder structure outside of Aperture, I don't know the need for re-organizing / moving things around in Aperture. I think it is great that it has the flexibility for that, and perhaps I would think of a reason for doing so.
I am pondering the best use of this app for my purposes and would appreciate your experienced thoughts. Thank you!

If you decide to use Aperture to edit your images then you should consider to use Aperture as Digital Asset Management System as well. Aperture is very versatile, and any mixed setup Finder - Aperture sooner or later will lead to trouble.
You do not need to fall back on the Finder, if you want to use Photoshop or another Editor for editing in edition to Aperture. If you launch your Editor as external editor from inside Aperture, then the edits will be updated in the Aperture database, there is no extra synching necessary.

  • Looking for Photography workshop(s) which uses Aperture

I'm looking to brush up on my photography skills that includes not only a photo shoot, but also uses Aperture for the post-production work. All the workshops I've found require use of Photoshop (which I don't use since Aperture covers my needs).
The only Aperture-related courses I have found are simply that: a course on Aperture (which is not what I'm looking for).

  • Burning a Slideshow to disk using Aperture?

    Hi,
I recently bought Aperture 2. I really like it, I just have one question can you take a slideshow created within the program and burn it to DVD for playback in a DVD?
Do I need to export it to idvd or imovie? Any insight into this area would be great.

Nope - but you can do some killer slide shows in Keynote
Seriously - I use Aperture for quick and dirty slideshows, Keynote for serious presentation and another piece of software on another un-named OS for universal DVD slide show distribution.

  • Can I use aperture to organize the files of my referenced photos?

I have my library in my macbook air, but since the HD is kind of small I keep all my photos in an external HD.
As my photo collection was a big mess, I've been using aperture to organize eveything into new projects.
What I want is a way to make my folders (in finder) to be automatically organized just as I did in aperture, so every photo will be in a folder with the name of the project.
I hope I made myself clear, thanks.

    Aperture is an image manager.
One of the hurdles users have to clear to make best use of Aperture is this:  Images you see in Aperture are created on-the-fly from two files.  Read this guide to the parts of Aperture.  Images in Aperture are not files.
    Finder is a file manager.
Since Images in Aperture do not equal files in Finder, there is no way (and little reason) to set up your system so that what you see in your file manager (Finder) is congruent to what you see in your image manager (Aperture).
My recommendation is to use Aperture for image management and ignore Finder for the files that make up the Images in Aperture.
Aperture does, however, present robust file-management tools.  If you want Finder to show you your Originals (which _are_ files) in Finder folders based on Aperture Projects, simply select those Images whose Originals you want to have presented this way and run "File ▹ Relocate Originals ... " with "Sub-folder Format" set to "Project Name".
If I sound curt it's because I'm busy this week  .  Ask for clarification as needed.

  • Delete .mac applic from Screen Savers

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me the easiest way to delete .mac or any other file from the System Preferences/Screen Savers? I'm looking for a utility or short cut way that doesn't involve typing codes into the Terminal.

There are three Screen Saver folders: /System/Library/Screen Savers/, /Library/Screen Savers/, and /Home/Library/Screen Savers/. Any third-party screen savers should be installed in one of the latter two folders. /Library/Screen Savers/ for screen savers that should be accessible to all users or /Home/Library/Screen Savers/ for screen savers only accessible by you. The screen savers in the /System/Library/Screen Savers/ folder is reserved for screen savers included in the OS X system installation.
From what you've provided I cannot tell you why such a dialog would appear unless you have the MobileMe and RSS screen saver (or some other screen saver) selected at the time you open the Screen Saver preferences.
