Use Apple Maps as GPS on IPhone5

Hi there,
I am fairly new to my IPhone 5 device. Coming from Android platfrom, there are a few transitional challanges.
Is there a way to have the Apple Maps operate as a GPS without locking of the screen?
After I open Apple Maps, I tick the little arrow at the bottom left to track my current location. That works, it shows my current location and whichever way I am traveling (by car). However, after about 30 seconds the screen dims and then locks. I need to keep it up for the duration of my drive to track which steet is where.
The same thing happens when I use Google maps app, but that may be the apps fault.
Thank you,

Thank you Ckuan for the speedy response!
I kinda figured that would be the answer, just wanted to explore the alternatives.
The problem with that: it adds an unnecessary step that could really be automated.
Meaning, it would be great if the auto-lock had no affect on my screen when I was in Apple Maps (or Google Maps for that matter).
I'll stick to having my Auto-Lock set to "Never" i guess. I just know I will forget to lock it manually from now and then, because of other pressing things floating in my brain that take priority.
Too bad though, my Android phone had no such issue. But then again, I am getting used to my Apple product now:) each has it's own pluses and minuses.

It is up to the app developer what map API to use. The apps you have chosen to use Google; I have an app that uses Bing. It is the developer's choice, not Apple's, however.

  • Has anyone used Apple Maps (on the Mac) for RoadTrip planning?

I would like to use Apple Maps to plan a road trip, but I don't see a way to drop multiple pins for multiple locations.  for example, I'd like to visit South Dakota, specifically, Custer and DeSmet, but I'd also like to visit Devil's Tower in Wyoming, the petrified forest which is close by, some caves, etc.  I would like to be able to set my starting point and drop some pins for points of interest and then figure out what else is around those points of interest (PINs) such as restaurants, hotels, historical sites, etc.  And finally be able to pull all this together so I can figure out the road trip.
Has anybody done this and if so would you be willing to share some tips?

I don't see a way to drop multiple pins for multiple locations
This can't be done with Maps at this time. The best you can do is amass a set of bookmarks that contain a maximum of one starting point and one ending point with no way to organize them beyond the order in which they were created. (A completely fruitless exercise in my experience.)
IMO, you're much better off creating maps with Google Maps, saving those maps, then accessing your saved maps through the Google Maps app (in its settings) on your iOS device or via the Web on a Mac. You can also use the Google Maps app in conjunction with the TripAdvisor app and even the OpenTable app to navigate to places to stay and eat anywhere in the country.
(Don't underestimate the value of paper maps for long road trips like this, either.)

  • Getting "iPhone needs to cool down" warning while using Apple Maps

I bought the iPhone 6 yesterday and today I used the Apple Maps navigation on it. Not 30 mins into the navigation I got following warning from the phone "iPhone needs to cool down". 30 minutes of GPS usage is not too much. This happened twice. Are other ppl. having the same issue or is it just my phone?
    Thanks,
    Anupam

  • Using apple maps without 3G

I recently purchase the iPad3 with only WiFi. I also purchase the gpsx150 gps signal receiver. In attempting to use the maps once I begin moving the map turns to a grid versus the maps?

  • Can I use offline maps with GPS on the 5C?

I am going on vacation abroad soon and my new iPhone 5C will be non-roaming because of the stupidly expensive internet data charges when out of the phone provider's home country. I will probably even pull the SIM card out to be 100% sure.
But I would still like to use it for GPS positioning when I am out walking about and then I must use off-line maps (like I have done with Google Maps on my Android phone).
Is it possible to download off-line maps to the iPhone while I am in the hotel and have a Wi-Fi connection and then the phone will use the downloaded maps when I am walking about the place outside of WiFi range?
If so, how do I set it up?

On the Android phone I have used MyTacks, which I believe is a Google app. I use version 1.1.16 currently and it is NOT able to use cached maps even though I can save maps in Google Maps for offline use while driving.
So if I use Google Maps I can see where I am now on the downloaded offline map, but there is no tracing of the walked path being done. If I use My Tracks it records the track but I cannot see it on a map until I am back in WiFi range.
I had hoped for the iPhone 5C to at least provide the possibility to use cached maps when locating my position....
What app do you suggest I use?

  • Sending directions from osx to iOS using apple maps doesn't work!

I don't see the option to send apple maps directions to my iphone.
Both mac osx mavericks and ios7 are logged in with the same icloud id.

Why doesn't my iphone show up in the share options?

    Hi dlinhardt,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you don't see your iPhone in Maps on OS X, and you've confirmed you're signed in with the correct iCloud account (Apple ID), try these steps from our troubleshooting article next:
OS X Maps: Share menu doesn't list iOS devices
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5293
    3. Quit OS X Maps and try again.
Quit the Maps app, then open it again.
Click the Share button. If you still don't see your devices, continue to the next step.
    4. Sign in to FaceTime or Messages on your Mac.
Sign in to either FaceTime or Messages. In Messages, you should be signed in to your iMessage account, not another type of account. If you're already signed in, continue to the next step.
Restart your computer. After the computer restarts, you should be asked to enter your iCloud password and click Log In.
If you still don't see your devices in Maps, quit Maps, then open it again and check for your devices once more.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • Can you use Apple Maps to make guided tours and video recordings, similar to Google Earth Pro?

    Hi Fellow Apple's
I am using Google Earth Pro to make tours, I'm using the build in Movie Maker function to export the tours as video clips. Now my question is if there's anyway to do the same in Maps.? Perhaps I'm not the only one looking for a feature like this?
    Cheers,
    Mick

    No.

  • Using Apple Maps

Too often when I try and get driving directions Maps refuses to cooperate and says I only need to go 1 minute to get to my destination, etc.. For example today I found a address in my addressbook and tried to get directions and Maps did not direct me. This does not always happen, but it happens so often I have turned to Scout instead for directions. Can this bug be fixed or is this just me?

If you click in the lower right corner of the Maps app, you will see a "Report a Problem" button.
You can use this to report specific map issues to Apple.  (By "specific", I mean particular start-stop destination pairs that seem to be defective.)

  • How do I use location based Reminders when my address does not show up in Apple Maps?

I currently live overseas and Apple maps does not have any street names listed in my neighborhood.  I have tried dropping a pin on my house and adding it to contacts, but it just takes me back to the center of town which is about 5 miles from my house and closer to my office so that the location reminders gets confused.
Is it possible to enter gps locations directly into the reminders program or into my contacts?  Any suggestions are welcome!

@Kilgore-Trout, there is no "contact us" at the bottom of the Apple Map. All I get is report the problem...move the pin, which I have done numerous times. Google maps gets it right & due to that fact, we have to tell vendors to NEVER use Apple Maps when getting directions for deliveries. I love apple, own all their products and now my BMW i3 is using their maps & I would love to have them be responsive.

  • HT5622 why does Find My iPhone via iCloud on my iMac use Google maps and not Apple maps?

when I use Find My iPhone through iCloud on my iMac, the app uses Google maps to display locations. Why? Shouldn't it use Apple maps?

    thanks
I used Apple maps on my iPhone, iPad and iMac and prefer it over Google maps except for street view (which albeit has an annoying, difficult to use interface). In El Salvador, Apple maps was certainly more accurate than Google maps. I like Apple maps turn-by-turn navigation via my Sonata's sound system, quite nice

  • Apple maps working while offline?

I have a UK based sim and im traveling in the US. I've turned off my mobile data, my wifi is on and my sim has picked up the local mobile network.  Today i used apple maps on the wifi at the hotel.  I left the building and it worked one hour later on the street and not in a wifi zone, how?  I was told apple maps doesn't work offline.

    @martinaidyn
There are two issues here firstly can you not browse internet at all as Ovi Maps application would use whatever is Priority 1 in Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Destinations > Internet to go "Online" and secondly if you have moved a considerable difference to your latest city all previously stored ephemeris GPS data is outdated.
You could always go to Menu > Applications > Location > Positioning > Positioning methods - temporarily disable all except Integrated GPS go outside (away from tall buildings if feasible) launch Ovi Maps and wait 20 - 30 minutes for it to lock on to new position.
Provided that regional mapping has already been downloaded (although WLAN access point needed by "Update" feature within device application) you don't need any internet or network connection for application to function.
