Use AppleTV as throughput for audio to stereo, sorta bypass TV

I apologize if already answered. I scanned the first 20 or so pages. I then searched and got 34 pages of hits.
What I've been trying to find out is whether this can replace an Airport Express. I've come close to buying one a few times so I can play my music from my main computer. The TV can have it's audio outs go wherever the user wants and so I would have it go to my stereo. I'm wondering if the TV can sorta bypass the television in this situation, that a user can control the audio from iTunes on the computer and not through the television's screen.
Short of that, once the streaming of music begins with the television, couldn't it be turned off? I find it incredibly wasteful to have all that energy flowing through a huge plasma screen just to play some tunes.

I'll probably sell my Airport Express. You can use
the Apple TV with the TV turned off. Just use the
remote to skip, play/pause, and go back. It's still
better than the Airport Express and you can do
everything when you turn the TV back on.
I'd be nice if the Apple TV had a display on the
front for better headless operation as a music player.
My question is this: If I sync protected music files purchased from iTunes to the Apple TV, what type of signal is output from the OPTICAL digital jack, when I playback the songs on the Apple TV?

  • How to use a bluetooth cellphone for audio input and output

Hello, I was wondering how to set-up my Mac Book so that I can use my bluetooth cellphone for audio in and audio out. Ideally, I would like to use my handset for talking on iChat and Skype. Has anyone had any luck doing this? When I bond my cellphone these optiosn do not appear. I know that this is easy to do on a Windows machine but I am not sure about how to do it on my Mac Book.
    Thanks!

Yes it should do what you want.
Go to "Audio Midi Setup", and go to the Audio menu and click "Open Aggregate Device Editor". The interface is pretty simple but if you do get stuck, just use the help function in Audio Midi Setup, as it has a step by step guide.
Then when you return to logic, go to the Preferences>Audio>Drivers section and select Aggregate Device as the new driver rather than either the built in sound or the tascam. Then the inputs and outputs will apply to BOTH devices.

  • With 10.2 I can only use system speaker output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps. How can I set this device in FCP 10.2? (it is set in both system preferences and midi)

With 10.2 I can only use a system (e.g. speaker) output for audio, NOT my RME FF400 I used without any problems previously. The FF400 works fine with other apps (some like TwistedWave) setup in the program, and others (like Spotify) using system preferences & audio midi setup. How can I set the FF400 to be the sound output device in FCP 10.2? N.B. The FF400 is set as sound output device in both system preferences and audio midi setup.

From the fcp.co forum. See if this does anything for you.

I have the solution! Well it at least worked for me. This is the response I got from Apple, Can you please try the following steps towards fixing your audio issue, and report back with your results?
    1. Open the application Audio Midi Setup (located in Applications : Utilities)
    2. Select the Output Tab for the current output device
    3. Select the Configure Speakers option
    4. Select the Multichannel tab
    5. Change the setting to Stereo Now mine was set to stereo but the left channel wasn't showing left. re-clicking on stereo reloaded the settings and after clicking apply it worked.

  • How can I use a different driver for audio input and output?

I did a search of course, and came up with something about an aggregate. I have no idea what this is, how to do it, or if it would even work for me.
What I am trying to do is:
    1) Record into Logic Express using my Tascam US-122.
    2) Have playback come out of my computer sound system, not the Tascam.
If I go over to the Audio setup window, I can only record when the driver is set to Tascam US-122. Likewise, I can only listen to sound when my Built-In Audio is selected. It gets rather annoying going between the two.
So, would this aggregate thing solve my problem? If so, how do I do it? Thanks for any help!

  • Anyone Using An SSD Drive for Audio Yet?

Been thinking about one of these for my record drive, since a very small one would work for me (as I'm only working on a few songs at any given moment and have plenty of other space to store things). It's between this and getting a V Raptor drive but I love the idea of no moving parts...
    Any input appreciated..

For audio recording, the concern is that SSDs have a lower number of write cycles than traditional hard drives. It's hard to know with such a new category of product, but they may fail faster in a situation where they are being written over and over very often.
This is a much bigger issue for system disks than for audio recording. Audio deals with relatively large files, and once they're written, they generally stay there until the project is dumped off-disk.
The system, on the other hand, constantly reads/writes/re-writes tiny blocks of data all over the place - which is also why random read/write rates are EVERYTHING in performance, and sequential read/write speeds, while certainly impressive, are pretty much irrelevant in actual use.
Also, all SSDs use a kind of "load balancing" to make sure that writes are evenly distributed across the entire memory, resulting in lifespans far beyond anything you'd reasonably expect off a mechanical hard drive.

  • Problem using FaceTime without iSight--for audio

I want to use my FaceTime with my air when it is closed and connected to an additional screen. FaceTime won't work because it can't detect an isight camera, but I want to use it for audio only.

    (1) I think that the FaceTime software requires a camera in order to work; you do not have to use the camera, but your Mac must recognize that a camera is connected.
As a workaround, I suggest that you either:
     • reactivate your MBA's display when you want to FaceTime, or
     • add a cheap compatible USB webcam if you must use the external display.
    (2) You can send FaceTime suggestions directly to Apple via Mac OS X Feedback.
You are unlikely to get a direct response from your "Fedback", but you can be certain that the responsible Apple people will see your input for consideration in future product development.

  • [10.7.5] Since update, I can only use 1 mirrored display for audio output at a time.

Before the most recent update (to 10.7.5) my 2010 Mac Pro (2x2.4GHz Intel Xeon w/ dual DisplayPort video card) had no problem sending both audio & video to my 2 mirrored HDMI displays, but now it will only send audio to one at a time, depending on which one is selected in the Sound System Preferences window.
This is kind of a big deal for me because the two displays are located in different rooms and viewed simulataneously by different people.
I know other people have been having audio problems since this update too.
Anybody know of a workaround or a way to contact someone at Apple who could see this get fixed soon?

I have no idea how to do what you're doing using those GUI tools (nor, likely, will anyone else here). When I used to need this I just loaded module-combine and set it as the default sink (did it in /etc/pulse/default.pa though you should be able to do it for only your user in ~/.pulse or something).

  • Method for audio mix when using 4-channels

Hi all, just wondering if someone can give me the best way to handle the following:
I have a performance of my kids dance group (ballet and tap) and captured the show using a static camera (Sony HDV A1) from which I used the onboard stereo mic for 1 channel (has been good for applause) and the xlr mic for the other (this channel has picked up the tap sounds really well). I have the original music so I primarily want to use the original music for 2-channel stereo and have this on A3 & 4 but to then fade in elements of 1 and 2 when appropriate.
I am basically using keyframes to fade in 1 and 2 but want to make sure the resulting output will be in stereo (based on the music tracks). The more I think of it though I suspect using the applause and tap tracks may result in their use coming through on only 1 of the stereo channels? Or am I doing this all wrong!
If any one has a quick guide as to how to approach this I would appreciate it.
    Thanks, Mike

    Hi David,
Thanks for this - the music is in stereo and I have this presently on tracks 3&4. The applause and tap tracks are on 1&2.
The end result I am after is 2 x L&R tracks for stereo but I need the process to get the 4 x tracks together with the applause mixed in across both music tracks and the same with the tap sound.
Not sure if I am making myself clear here - hopefully I have!
    Thanks, Mike

  • Using USB on MacBook Pro for audio input

I have a turntable that outputs audio via USB for conversion from LPs to digital sound on my MacBook. It comes with Audacity software for control of the process. When I use my daughter's 5 year old Gateway I am presented, within Audacity, with a drop down of audio input choices - including the USB ports. When I try to use my MacBook the only option for audio input is the Microphone jack.
I'm pretty sure that I should be able to use the USB port for audio input but am unsure how to make it happen. I'm comfortable using GarageBand if the Audacity software is the problem.
Can anyone help me with this?

The previous answer is CRAP, your turntable already provides you digital audio over USB.
You just have to select USB Audio as the default audio input.
Under OSX this is not done inside Audacity, as is done under Windows. It must be done on the System Preferences, Audio.
There you will be able to select the USB interface as your default sound input.
After this, launch Audacity, and there you will see that the USB audio is now the only available option...

  • Use httpchannel/httpservice combination for binary data

I have a blazeds proxy configuration set up with my flex application to communicate with a RESTful webservice.
This webservice is practically an interface to a content management system which has all types of content text and binary(audio, video, images etc) protected by HTTP basic authentication. I had no reason to use Blazeds except for its proxy capabilities to enable HTTP Authentication headers to be sent from the application to the webserver which dont work when sent directly to the server as mentioned.See related post below -
    http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/message/136576
I send the requests through HTTPService from flex through a configured destination and it works well for all data formats supported by HTTPservice. Unfortunately HTTPService does not support binary resultformat for images, audio and video. I am aware that i should use a streaming server for audio and video data but for images I would like to go through the blazeds proxy to the webserver. Loader is the only class which is recommended to be used with images but i am not sure of how to use it with blazeds.
Is it possible in anyway to achieve what I am trying to?
    Thanks,
    Peeyush

    Try this...
    var b:ByteArray = _dataLoaderHTTPService.lastResult as
    ByteArray;
    b.position = 0;
    trace(b.readObject());

  • How Much External Hard Drive Partition Recommended for Audio Recording?

    Hi,
I have a glyph 300 gigabyte drive. Does anyone have thoughts on how to partition it? I was thinking 200 gb for samples, etc and 100gig for recording audio? Is that too much or too little for recording audio? Or should I use all 300 gigs for audio recording. I also want to do video editing in FCP eventually.
    Thanks

Okay...There are 3 guys and each has a basket full of marbles. The 1st guy has a basket full of red marbles, the second guy has a basket full of blue marbles, and you have a basket full of red and blue marbles. All three of you have your left hand tied behind your back. You are in competition with the other two guys, you are on your own and they work as a team. Someone starts shouting give me 3 reds and 2 blue marbles. You reach in your basket and grab 3 reds and 2 blues as fast as you can, but the other guys are way ahead of you because there are 2 of them and they each only have to worry about grabbing one color of marble at a time. So you lose the contest badly... that is why you need at least
2 hard drives instead of just one (whether partitioned or not). Buy an external firewire drive. you'll be glad you did.

  • MP3 players with bookmarking for audio bo

<font face="Arial" size="2" color="black">I am trying to find an MP3 player that is very good at playing audio books. Most MP3 manufacturers do not really address the use of their players for audio books so features that apply to books are left out of their discussions. I've found a website that tests MP3 players for audio books, but it only lists a few players?and seems behind in their testing. They do have a list of criteria that they use to approve an MP3 player; their list follows:
    <font face="Arial" size="2" color="black">?<font face="Verdana" size="3" color="blue">Device Feature Requirements
<font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must be able to play secure or protected WMA files: Windows Media Audio (WMA) is an audio compression format similar to MP3, but with built-in digital rights management (DRM) for copy protection and usage restrictions. The DRM used by NetLibrary eAudiobooks controls expiration of your eAudiobook, so that they will expire at the end of the borrowing period.
<font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must be able to play a WMA file with a minimum bit rate of 32 Kbps
    <font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must be Windows 2000, XP or Vista compatible
<font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must be compatible with Windows Media Player version 9 (WMP v9) or higher: This is used for transferring or synchronizing files to the device.
<font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must have [On/Off] resume, pause/resume functionality, or true bookmarking: These features enable you to return to your place in the book. The least desirable?alternati've is to fast-forward to find your place in the book each time you resume reading.
<font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must have an LCD time display of either HH:MM:SS or MMMM:SS: These time display formats allow the device to play and handle long tracks or files. The time display is also important when returning to a designated place in the book.
    <font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must have a minimum of 52 MB of storage
<font face="Verdana" size="" color="blue">. Must pass the NetLibrary Long Play Standard: The device must be able to play a track with duration of 8 hours or longer (file size usually 256 MB or larger).
I guess one of the key features is the [color="#ff0000"]bookmarking option so that you can continue a book where you left off. Can you recommend some MP3 players that meet the above requirements? One to?5 MByte should be plenty of memory, we don't need a lot of storage capacity because we only borrow (check out) the books from our local library. Thank you.
Message Edited by bookman on 2-9-200602:04 PM

but by taking away those features, the new creative players are now very similar to idiot pods. albeit more reliable. the one edge creative had was superior audio quality through eax. losing that is a big mistake in my opinion. the audio quality is probably?still better, but not by as much anymore.

  • Can I use the new Apple TV without a display for audio streaming only?

    Here's my situation...
I have an Airport Express in my living room connected to my DSL modem to create a wifi network. I also have a current model MacBook Pro and would like to add an Apple TV to my bedroom system for music and Netflix audio streaming. I do not own a TV to do any setup.
If I bought an ATV for my bedroom and connected the optical output to my DAC, would I be able to accomplish my goal or is there a setup procedure on the ATV which mandates a display?
I realize I could just buy another Airport Express for easy audio streaming, but then I wouldn't have the Netflix audio capability which I would like since I watch movies on my MBP. I'm hoping like an Airport Express, the ATV would configure itself for audio streaming once connected to my wifi network.
Thanks for any help or ideas.

If you're planning to stream from iTunes to the AppleTV controlling the material via iTunes, I suspect it may just appear as an Airtunes speaker option for iTunes without any setup needed.
No Netflix in UK so don't know much about it, but I suspect you'd need to control the AppleTV directly for this unless you were viewing on the MBP and used something like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil to transmit audio.
If you have no desire for controlling AppleTV either on an TV or using Remote app for iPhone etc (and you'd need to set AppleTV up with a TV for Netflix or AppleTV controlled streaming anyway), you might want to consider using another Express upstairs and hook it's optical out to your DAC if you're just after stereo audio.
