Use Blackmagic Intensity Pro to Monitor FCP7

So I'm trying to help my brother get this to work over the phone, but he's not as technical as I am. It doesn't sound that hard, but he can't seem to get any output to this card and I can't seem to find a setup guide online.
He's running a 2010 Mac Pro with Snow Leopard (I think) and FCP 7. Can anyone run down the basic setup for this card or point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply.....

  • Anyone using Blackmagic Intensity Pro with Premiere CS4

I've looked through the threads and have seen similar postings, but no real good answers. Is anyone using Blackmagic Intensity Pro to viiew timeline on a HDTV using the HDMI connector?
I purchasedf the Intensity Pro and can't get it to work with CS4. Any assistance would be appreciated.

If you're using a Core i7 processor, one of the problems might be with the motherboard.  There's only one Intel board that BM has approved (sorry, don't have the model in front of me -- on a piece of scratch paper in my wife's car).
I'm looking to build a new system myself and have been looking at the Intensity Pro card as well.  The main feature I'm looking for is real-time preview and program output to an HD monitor that I'd hook up via HDMI.  I probably also would use it to capture analog sources for audio and video.  I don't have any interest in BM's lossless data capture as it creates monster-sized files.  That's why I was also planning to add Cineform once it's fully approved and working for CS4.  However, as best as I can tell, the Intensity Pro card doesn't recognize the Cineform codec on the timeline.  Does anyone know if and how well these two will function together within Premiere?  (I'm also assuming that the new 4.1 release might make these types of Premiere add-ons work better.)
    Thanks.

  • Premiere crashing. Using Blackmagic Intensity Pro HDV sequence

Hi. I'm editing with Premiere. I'm using an intensity pro card(blackmagic design) with
Q4000 Nvidia Graphics card. It keeps crashing on me. More so with the HDV footage I'm editing.
I have included my computer specs as well as media info of my source footage and the sequence settings.
Any help with this would be much appreciated!!!

I checked your PSU based on your list of components and it gave me these results:
These figures are without any safety margin. I usually advise to add around 10% for safety. If I look at your PSU, it shows these data:
This tells me that your +5V rail may be a weak point because of the lacking amperage with this PSU and worth checking. Your system needs a combined wattage of nearly 190 W but delivers only 150 W on the +3.3 and +5V rails. This also shows that it will be hard to make this a more balanced system with better disk I/O, because the wattage is just not enough to add a dedicated raid controller and some more disks. I would not be surprised if the PSU is the culprit here, but let your IT guy check this out. And let him carefully check the temps of CPU, mobo and GPU, both idle and under load.
A good disk setup for a balanced system with such a powerful CPU would be something like described in the 'Warrior' system here: Adobe Forums: What PC to build? An update...

  • Using BlackMagic Intensity Pro Video Compression card with FCP in a MacPro

BlackMagic is offering the Intensity Pro card that they claim is enhancing the quality of video compression for better results than software driven compression, even with Standard DV in addition to HDV, and at a surprisingly cheap cost (less than $300).
    http://www.h-digital.com.au/hardware/hardwareview.asp?id=152
As someone used such hardware driven compression card in a MacPro ?
Does-it really help making better quality DVDs?
If not are there better hardware driven compression card?

7-8 years ago, we said that analog video was at the low end and DV was at the high end.
Uh, DV was NEVER on the high end. Digibeta and Beta were analog, and were HIGHER end than DV. Just because it was digital doesn't mean it was better. DV is compressed 5:1 and has 4:1:1 color sampling. Beta was 4:2:2 and better than DV...and Digibeta was and still is the high end SD format. DVCPRO 50 a close second. No...DV came in on the low end...like HDV comes in on the low end of the HD spectrum.
If this Intensity card does not help to get better compression than software driven compression, is there another card which can do so ?
Well, I answered this, but you must have missed my answer, so I will bold it for you: *THERE IS NO CARD OUT THERE FOR THE MAC THAT WILL AID IN DVD COMPRESSION.* I don't know about the PC side, so I make the statement to include MAC only. There are several hardware solutions for encoding DVDs that distributors use when making the theatrical DVDs like OCEANS 13...but those are separate hardware encoders. And no, again, those encoders are not available on a Mac.
What I mean at the end is to find ways to have higher quality DVDs than when using software such as Compressor. Do you follow me ?
I follow you....you aren't following me. Since I am an editor and not a distributor, I don't know what those solutions are. They exist outside of the editing world, so you have to GOOGLE this or look elsewhere. Needless to say, the Intensity does not aid in this. No capture card does. That is not what they are designed for. They are designed to capture non-firewire formats and to output to non-firewire formats...not to aid in DVD compression.

  • Numbered Stills won't preview with Blackmagic Intensity Pro in CS5

I am an animator and I import numbered stills (jpeg) into Premiere. In CS3 I would drag the sequence on to the timeline and then hit "enter" and the animation would render a preview. In CS5 the preview won't render. Instead of a red bar or green bar, there is just a gray bar and the animation plays back very choppy.
I am pretty sure this is because I am using Blackmagic Intensity Pro, but would love to know if there is a solution. The previews render when I choose a "DV" preset instead of "Blackmagic", but of course they don't show on my tv monitor then.
Has anyone come across this problem?
    Thanks

There have been quite some posts here about the BM Intensity, but denying it is not uncommon in this business. Look at Dell that refuses to admit that about 12 million of their systems are suffering from faulty, leaking capacitors and die quite often. Around 97% of their Optiplex range is expected to die within three years, due to the Nichicon capacitors used .

  • FCPX crashes all the time using the Intensity Pro Card for monitor preview wassup?

I have been using FCPX for a few months and I like it somewhat and could really love it for it not crashing on all my projects. If I scrub the timeline or apply a filter it crashes. I'm using the Blackmagic Intensity Pro card for monitor output and the latest drivers that they put out and can't really get through a project because it crashes all the time.I thought that if i get a different display card it would possible help I have the GForce 120 card which only has 256MB ram.Can anybody put some light on the issue?

FCP X currently does not support Intensity Pro cards.

  • SpeedGrade 2014.2 will not send output via BlackMagic Intensity Pro HDMI to my external monitor.

I occasionally can get a few pixels near the left side of the monitor, and 2014.1 would display the lower half of the frame, but now, after the 2014.2 update, I can't even get that much. Premiere is monitoring perfectly. Any suggestions welcome!

I am having the same problem. I am on Speedgrade version 2014.1 currently and it won't output to either of the monitors I've tried. Both are connected via HDMI.
One is a 22' ASUS monitor, which reads "Out of Range" when I connect it to my blackmagic Intensity Pro output. From what I've read this has to do with the frame size coming out of SP being too large for the monitor.
Next I tried to output to a 50' HD TV. I don't get the "Out of Range" message on this one, instead the monitor is black with an occasional flicker when I hover over a clip or an option in Speedgrade. By flicker I mean the screen flashes a garbled purple mess for less than a second, then goes black again.
I'm running the Creative Cloud Suite on a Mid 2012 Mac Desktop with a 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processor, 52GB of RAM, and ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB graphics card. OSX version 10.8.5.
Been waiting for this capability for a while, any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Using the Blackmagic Intensity Pro Shuttle (Thunderbolt)

Can I use my Blackmagic Intensity Pro Shuttle (Thunderbolt) with anything other than a thunderbolt port?  I have a Macbook Pro that has the thunderbolt port (which is why I purchased the thunderbolt shuttle) but I would also like trying to use it with my older iMac that does not have a thunderbolt port.  Will using some sort of thunderbolt to firewire/usb 3.0 converter work in this case?
    Thank you in advance!

No and the only other model they make is for USB 3. If your other Mac doesn't have TB it doesn't have USB 3.

  • Premiere Pro with Blackmagic Intensity Pro; Importer

I'm using a Blackmagic Intensity Pro with Premiere Pro. I don't Import anything with it directly, i just use it to preview my timeline on a seperate monitor.
The issue I have is when I try to import a AVI-file to my project
before I had the Intensity Pro, Premiere would input the file as a Microsoft AVI and it worked perfectly.
But now the exact same file is imported as a Blackmagic AVI-file. now I am experiencing green bars in my video and the color information is totally screwed up.
So my question is: can I deactivate or change the Import-settings of Premiere, without to remove the Card completely (turn PC off, remove card, turn back on...)?

    Ok, my workflow is:
I'm importing a video file from my hard drive via double-click or drag'n'drop. i don't capture from a video source with the intensity pro!
the specs of the video file according to premiere are:
    Type: Blackmagic AVI File
    File Size: 1,7 GB
    Image Size: 1024 x 768
    Frame Rate: 18,00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 16 bit - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;15;18;28
Average Data Rate: 1,9 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,0

    Interleave: 1 : 1.00 (conforming required)
    Video Track 1:
Size is 1.49G bytes (average frame = 94.18K bytes)
    There are 16541 keyframes.
    Frame rate is: 18.0000 fps
    Frame size is: 1024 x 768
    Video format is 'MJPG' 422 8-bit ITU-R 709
    Audio Track 2:
    Size is: 168.2637M bytes
    Rate is: 48000 samples/sec
    Sample size is: 16 bits
I've tried importing the video file at a friend's pc with premiere pro 5.5 and there the file works just fine. so I'm assuming that it has to do with the intensity pro...
It has the same properties execpt under Type there is "Microsoft AVI File" and everything beneath Pixel Aspect Ratio isn't there.

  • Lag with Blackmagic Intensity Pro

I just got Adobe Prod. Premium CS6 as well as a Blackmagic Intensity Pro monitoring card and an eVGA GTX570 graphics card, and to avoid problems, I did a new Windows installation from scratch on a formatted drive. This was done today, so all the drivers and program updates are completely up to date.
I know the Intensity Pro is about the cheapest card you can get to preview video correctly on a TV set, since graphics cards don't display video in the same way as a dedicated editing card does, so I'm still happy with it, but I would like to find it if I can get around this annoyance until I can get a better card, or if perhaps it's a flaw in Premiere and a more expensive card would not make a difference.
The card has about 200 miliseconds of lag compared to the program monitor in the Premiere window. This is not really terrible, but it becomes distracting when watching the TV screen and the change of frame in a cut happens first in the computer monitor in a small window within Premiere, and a fraction of a second later on the TV screen. Also, it makes it difficult when I have to sync cuts to changes in the music. I guess in that type of situation it would be better to do the cuts on the computer monitor and then switch to the TV set for color correction.
But this is not just in regular playback. It gets worse when scrubbing the timeline, or moving with JKL. In those cases, sometimes it takes it like a second to catch up to what I see on the program monitor.
I also have a GrassValley HD Spark monitoring card for Edius that while it has a little lag, it's much shorter than this and it's not so distracting. That card was connected using the same cable to the same TV set, so that tells me the Intensity Pro has some extra lag, but it's hard to complain about it on a $190 card. However, I was wondering if anyone here has found themselves in the same problem and found a solution? I searched but so far I couldn't find anything.
And as far as these type of cards, what is the least expensive one that will give me perfect preview with no lag?

Thanks, I might try that one, although it's a bit over my budget at $660.25, but I'll have to if I don't have a choice.
What about the Matrox MXO2 Mini, has anybody tried it?
About turning off MPE GPU's acceleration, that is not an option for me. I'm used to edit in Edius, where almost everything you do is real time and you barely have to render anything ever for previewing purposes, and Edius doesn't even require an expensive Nvidia card for that, it only uses the CPU. But, it lacks several features Premiere CS6 has, especially when it comes to artistic effects. Overall I'm really hooked up on Premiere CS6, but only if I can have the same fluidness of work I always had with Edius, so I wouldn't turning off MPE. That's why I spent $280 in a new graphics card.
I really hope that this is just a matter of the BM Intensity being a cheap card and not Premiere, because this past couple of days I've been editing almost all day and while I enjoyed the editing process in Premiere, it's very frustrating to start playback and sometimes it will be fine but other times the audio and video will be out of sync, so I have to position the playhead back and start playing again. When that happens half the times you play something, it's really annoying. This is regardless of real time areas or not. To make sure of this, I forced render of an area that had no effects on it and it still has the sync problem. I had to disable auto playback after rendering because that would cause the problem every time, while if I position the playhead manually and then hit play, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro is on the fritz

So, I just put together a nice new rig: new Mac Pro (see specs), 20" Cinema Display, FCP Studio 2, etc, and a Blackmagic Intensity Pro. I got the Blackmagic card so I can monitor HD footage on a 32" LG 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV (32 LG70) . I've installed the Blackmagic Intensity pro, updated its drivers, and connected it to the LG via the most expensive Monster Cable HDMI/HDMI available.
My current FCP project uses HDV 1080i60 footage. I have chosen the Intensity HDTV 1080i 59.94 - HDV Easy Setup in FCP. Here is the problem: Sometimes the audio/video signal reaches the LG, and sometimes it doesn't. Whether it works or not doesn't seem to correspond to anything. It works one day, the next it doesn't--when no settings have changed. When it does not work, I get one of two messages on the blank LG screen: "Invalid Format" or "No Signal."
The only way to ensure that the signal reaches the LG is to open the computer's system settings, and under the Intensity option, where it says"Select Output Processing," choose one of the downconvert options. I can then monitor my footage, but in a crappy, downconverted state.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Blackmagic Intensity Pro's drivers multiple times, with no success. I've tested the card by connecting it to a smaller Samsung monitor, with no success. I've tried tweaking the settings in FCP, checking the HDMI connection, using different HDMI inputs on the LG, and so on and so forth for the past 48 hours. I have no clue what to do at this point. I'm basically at the mercy of this Blackmagic card that sometimes, for no apparent reason, kicks in and works, but mostly dysfunctions. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially as Blackmagic support is closed on the weekends. Thanks.

Brad - the good news is that with some tweaking - you can get it to work.
The bad news is that it is very temperamental.
I've found that I can always get it to output 1920 x 1080 24p if I select 'capture now' with a video camera connected to HDMI input.
Sometimes, just doing that without one connected, will do the trick. Had to close FCP and then open it again.
Sometimes a reboot would 'fix' things.
Sometimes, I'd want to sacrifice a chicken and do a dance.
Lately, it has surprised me, and just worked.
If you play with Motion, you'll find that you may need to change from 59.94 the nearest other resolution (maybe 50i? I'm doing a backup now so can't look).
And Motion will play perfectly, and then all of a sudden, it will want 59.94 to synch.
I tried 4 different HDMI monitors, and a 40' Sharp HTMI TV. Was messed up the same way with ALL of them.
I tried an HDMI switch, didn't help.
I tried swapping out the card for a new one from Black Magic, zero change.
Try yelling at their tech support. They really should fix this. They would deny to me that 1080 24p would even work, very frustrating. Tech support has not been much help, and doesn't seem to be very aware of what's going on. I had to send them a small file to show them it would play it. Must be some higher level folks at their company somewhere.
They could sell a lot more if they'd enable color calibration on it - and they could do this as drivers are about the same as for their DecLink (one tech even said there was a way to do this, get DecLink drivers to work, but he wouldn't tell me, I'd love to find out how).
    Good Luck!

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro Output

So I thought that with CS6, pretty much any sequence could ouput via my BlackMagic Intensity Pro, and I didn't have to be in a BM sequence. Well, I have found that I am restricted by resolution and framerate - I have to be in a 720p60 sequence or nothing will output to my TV (which is a 720p TV). This is quite a problem as I am almost exlcusively working in 1080p24 sequences. Am I doing something wrong? Or have I misenterpretted the capabilities? FCP was able to pretty much ouput any seq/frame rate with the card.
    -sam

I'm demoing CS6 and had my own thought on this.  Let me see if this helps articulate the problem.
The crux of the matter is, in Final Cut Pro as an example, the BM Intensity output is completely independent of whatever sequence settings you use.  This has never been possible and is still not possible in Premiere.
In my case, I use an older HD CRT for color correction that only accepts and outputs 1080i and I often edit 23.98 material. The main thing in FCP -- I could always leave my monitor on no matter what I was editing.
In Premiere Pro CS5 and earlier, the framerate output of the Intensity always changes to match the BM sequence. Obvious, yes.
So I knew I had to only use 29.97 Intensity sequences. I knew if I jumped to a BM sequence I would get a normal picture.  When I jumped back to a regular, say AVCHD 23.98 sequence for instance, it would shut the Intensity output off. It wasn't ideal, but the output signal was simply controlled by whatever sequence I selected.
Now, because of CS6's new way of outputting video to the Intensity, unless I always only edit in 29.97 or deselect the Intensity output in the menu, I am constantly having to either shut my monitor off myself, or dig down into some submenu to deselect the Intensity output. Honestly, it's a pain.
For me CS6 is a step backwards in video output to the BM Intensity card.

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro - Video playback doesnt work

Hi there, I am experiencing some weird issues with Premiere CC and the Blackmagic Intensity Pro card.
I mainly use the card to playback my edit to an HD monitor. This has worked quite well, but as of today it stopped working.
Last time it stopped working I opened a different project (one I knew the card have worked before) to check and it was working. I did nothing and opened the project the card wasnt working and to my surprise it just worked.
Today I am having a problem as I cant make any of the projects work w the card.
It feels it works at random. I would appreciate any help on this.
Working on a Mac Pro Quad Core INtel 3.2GHz
    Sequence is Blackmagic Uncompressed 23.97fps

Problem started when I was flipping between headphones and external speaker (to cut my audio). I do not however send audio through the BM card. Always Line out or Headphones.
Thanks in advance for any info.

    hi,
ihave bought it and am using it with my quadcore g5 2.5 ..
for now i switched back to canopus because its much more stable and not
"touchy" when i jump around in the timeline...
but this may have a lot of other reasons ..
with finalcut its very nice ans stable, i think the drivers have been written
to be compatible with fcp rather than logic.
I wantd to have the picture for an HD Movie in Llogic but now i prfe to have
    stability,
