Use Camera with capture card

Hi,
I'm using the camera method to view input from a webcam or to
view input from my capture card locally.
My webcam looks perfect, but I don't see any input from my
capture card.
Of course I've got input (tested with windows media encoder).
Should I activate or define the input (composite video,
s-video) or anything.
If yes.... How do I do this...
Thanks.

Hi,
I have a similar problem. I want to use a webcam by the
composite connection and a dvd-recorder by the s-video connection
of the same capture card. How do I manage my flash application to
get the correct input source, that I have defined inside the
capture card configuration tool ?
Thanks,
Franz

  • Alternatives to using camera for capture

I've been lucky enough to be designated the "official" videographer for our high school basketball teams. I am cranking out anywhere between 2 and 8 videos a week, plus a few more events in between. I use IM to IDVD, burn the image, delete the projects and start over again. I use a rather expensive camera and would prefer to keep it in good shape for a few years. Between the shooting, rewinding, capturing and rewinding again (yes I do reuse my tapes several times)I am concerned about the wear and tear on my camera. What are my options here? I can find minidv player/recorders but they are over a $1000 and I'm not sure if they would be any more longlasting than a camera or if they are compatible with capturing on IM. I am leaning towards buying a more inexpensive minidv camera.
    Your thoughts?
If you know of a better place to post this question, I'm all ears.

If you want to save wear and tear on your expensive (shooting) camera, then as long as it's in good condition, and the head and transport alignment isn't out of kilter you should be able to use a cheap miniDV camcorder (with a FireWire connection) to import your tapes into iMovie.
Shoot with your expensive camcorder, and edit (..i.e; play and rewind tapes..) with a cheaper bottom-of-the-range camcorder ..after all, it's only the tape transport and playback heads which you'll need, and not the expensive optics and video-capture circuitry.
If all's aligned correctly, then any Standard Play miniDV tape should play back on any other miniDV camcorder.
CAUTION: Anything recorded at Long Play speed might NOT play back on another camcorder or deck, as tolerances (track widths) are so fine at LP speed than no manufacturer guarantees LP recordings' compatibility when played back on other equipment.

  • Unable to use camera with MBP in cradle?

    Happy New Year,
Posting this for my Dad, who finally saw the light and dove headfirst into the world of Mac: appears he is having trouble getting the camera on his 24" ACD to operate when connected to his cradled MBP. We're trying to use Skype or iChat AV, and though he can see me, I can't see him. Audio works fine, and we confirmed the mic on the ACD is being used when the USB is plugged in.
To isolate the problem, I had him disconnect his MBP USB cable from the display to operate the MBP as a stand alone laptop. We disconnected, he woke up his laptop after he opened it, I called him back, and voila- I was able to see and hear him fine on the MBP (green light is lit). He can also successfully see himself in PhotoBooth using either the laptop alone or with the ACD, so no problem there.
I read through a related post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10425681&#10425681) and two embedded Apple Support articles on the use of the camera, but before we pull the ol' SMC reset I want to make SURE I haven't overlooked something obvious. I know it shouldn't be this hard!
    Thanks,
    Eric

Thanks- answers to your questions in order:
    -Not a dock, and no other piece of hardware involved- he just sets the laptop beneath the ACD in a small, plastic shelf;
-Good question. While on Skype with him, I was wearing headphones. The sound was quite rich and clear while we were talking with his MBP closed and hooked up to his ACD. Upon disconnect from his MBP I noticed that the sound had changed quite dramatically- more tinny and muffled. Then, when I asked him to reconnect the USB cable to his MBP I discovered quite loudly that the built-in mic is nearby, what with all the sudden noise coming from his fumbling with the cable.
-I confirmed with him that the lid is down on the MBP. He is running Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Most interesting to me: when the MBP is hooked up to the ACD the Skype preferences page states that the camera is "unable to be accessed or is in use". Yet he is able to open up Photo Booth and take his own picture from the ACD camera. Hmmmm.

  • Image acquisition using video capture card

I am developing an application for Single fiber fusion splicer...my application basically has to capture the picture from the splicer using a Video capture card...Is it possible to use IMAQ session to get the picture from the card, store it a file and display the same using labview??or is there any other suitable way instead of IMAQ???

    Cyril,
A typical image acquisition system consists of the following
    components:
Camera » Framegrabber board » Image Acquisition Software »
    Image Processing Software
The software in this application is of course LabVIEW.  The ease of integration of it with your
camera and framegrabber board is dependent on a number of variables and I
discuss that further in the rest of this post.
    Camera
It looks like you already have a camera picked out, but I could not find
any information on the VHR-1000 on the internet.  Who is the manufacturer?  Can you provide a link to information
available about it online?  NI does
not actually make cameras; we simply connect with third party
cameras.  We have a list of the
various cameras that are tested and supported by our hardware available at
    http://www.ni.com/cameras
Here are two more documents that will discuss camera options in more
    detail:

    Image Acquisition
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/2808
    Framegrabber
    board
The framegrabber board is what will be responsible for taking the signals
from your camera, either digital or analog, manipulating them
appropriately, and storing them in computer memory.
The framegrabber board you choose will largely depend on the camera you
choose and the interface it uses. (Interfaces are discussed in the Image
    Acquistion document mentioned earlier)
It looks like you already have a Domino Maxi framegrabber board, which
LabVIEW may or may not be able to interface with.  Could you please provide more
information and possibly a link to some info on this framegrabber board?
    Choose NI Vision Hardware
    http://www.ni.com/vision/hardware.htm
    Image
    Acquisition Software
The Image Acquisition software is the software responsible for bringing
images into the computer in conjunction with the framegrabber board or
    IEEE-1394 bus.  Depending on your
interface, you will need either NI-IMAQ (framegrabber) or NI-IMAQdx
    (IEEE-1394).
    Image
    Processing Software
For image processing in LabVIEW, you will need the Vision Development
Module.  It’s product page can be
    found here:
    Vision Development Module
    http://www.ni.com/vision/vdm.htm
This software will enable you to do any type of image processing that your
    application may require.
Those are the basic components of an image acquisition
system.  Hopefully you will be able to
follow those links and gain a better understanding of what exactly you need to
be able to setup the kind of system you are looking for.  This presentation provides a great deal of
general information and may be able to answer some more specific questions you
    have:
    Imaging Fundamentals
    http://www.ni.com/vision/vdm.htm
It also discusses camera and lens selection with respect to
the image size and detail that you need.
Please let us know if you have any further questions related to this.

  • HDV capture card

I'm looking for a capture card that support HDV camcorders, for G5.
But it seems that doesn't exist any card: I found only HD or SD capture cards.
The only HDV capture card that is able to native editing hdv video in realtime from hdv camcorders is the canopus EDIUS NX (and canopus velxus 300 in Japan); but the problem is that canopus hdv card is only for PC.
I called canopus and they said me that these cards will be for MAC when Apple will release the new powermac intel-based.
So I read in the apple FCP 5 HD page this:
    "Native HDV Support
Final Cut Pro 5 supports native long-GOP MPEG-2 editing for working with camera-original HDV video. Unlike other solutions, Final Cut Pro 5 acquires HDV media via FireWire and keeps it in the original format, transferring it into the system without any generation loss. Output via FireWire back to an HDV camera or deck, or transfer your native HDV to DVD Studio Pro 4 for an end-to-end native HDV workflow."
I know that it is not possible capture a video by firewire from a camcorder without further compressing it. I know that it is for this reason that pro use capture cards (that have dedicated processors for this).
So I think that there aren't HDV capture cards for mac because the hardware companies don't make new cards for only few months, so they're waiting the new intel-based macs. If so, this firewire technology of final cut pro 5 is a compromise for these last times, or is it really like the capture-card processing? and if so, how is it possible capturing a hdv video by firewire without further compressing it?
Do you know about a HDV card for MAC or is it really good using Final Cut Pro HD 5 with firewire ?
    Thank you.

It all depends on what type of work you are doing...
Capture Cards are for use with other formats that cannot be captured via firewire: BetaSP, Digibeta, HDCAM, D5. They are also require for outputting to these formats.
Not many broadcast facilities will take a DVCAM master...some will, but most won't. And depending on your client, they may or may not take an HDV master. They may want an HDCAM or D5 master if they are producing HD content. For that you need a capture card and high speed drive RAIDS.
Why do other pricier systems come with capture cards? Because they are sold that way. FCP, out of the box, is ready to edit DV, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD and HDV...FULL RESOLUTION...no compression. Any need to do higher end requires a capture card.

  • Plug-in for StarTech Video Capture Card

StarTech'website shows their ECHDCAP ExpressCard video capture card supports Adobe Premiere CS5 plug-in for editing. I talked to a Tech at StarTech and he said the card should work with Premiere Pro CS5 & CS6 but StarTech doesn't support it, and he didn't know where I can get the Premiere SC5 plug-in. Does anyone know what plug-in StarTech is referring to, and where I can get it?
If anyone is currently using the ECHDCAP capture card or the StarTech USB3HDCAP Capture Device, please let me know how you got it working with Premiere Pro.

    Ann & Bill,
I probably should have given you more information. This application is different than what I usually use Premiere for.
One of my hobbies is shooting long range rifles at 1,000 yards. I'm trying to capture the point of impact on steel targets 500 to 1,000 yards away. I've attached my XA10 to my Swarovski spotting scope so I can see the impact. I've been transferring the video from the XA10 to my computer through the USB port, then importing the video into Premiere and adding it to the sequence. By the time I get all this done, then scrub the video to find the frame with the initial BANG, then count 41 frames forward for 870 yards, then scrub the video again to find the impact point, the wind and several other conditions have changed which affect my next shot. this makes for a long and tedious day.
The bottom line is... I'm trying to streamline my workflow so I can capture the video from my XA10 straight to a Premiere sequence, then start scrubbing the video to find the point of impact.
The reason I'm using Premiere is because none of my other programs allow me to scrub with audio.
I would prefer not to spend $600 for a Maxtor MX02 Mini and ExpressCard adapter; especially since it requires 110 volts and that's not available at the shooting range.
If you know of another way to do this, or can recommend an inexpensive program that will allow me to capture audio and video from my XA10 and scrub it with audio, I'd sure appreciate hearing about it.
    Thank you,
    Brian Scura...

Tell me  to  summarize I  can be used osprey 100 capture card that converts pal to  raw format. the encoded or compressed  FMLE 3.1 using (in my case) H.264 and then the flash media server completes streaming.
Tell me if using capture cards ATI give me an output format H.264 and use the  FMLE3.1  again and then compress it using H.264 and Flash media server completes streaming, is this  correct?
