Use CC Libraries Swatches in Gradients and on Text

I like the new Creative Cloud Libraries panel, and think in time it will prove itself useful. But it seems like there are a lot of use cases that haven't quite been ironed out. For example, it doesn't appear that you can directly use a color swatch from the library as a gradient stop, either by double clicking the stop or by dragging the swatch to the gradient. Likewise, if I select some characters in a text area, I cannot apply a color swatch from the Libraries panel. In both cases I'm having to create an object, assign the swatch, create a "real" color swatch from the object, and use that instead. Can I request these features in a future update to Illustrator? (Or if it's possible now, and I'm just being dense, please enlighten me!)

I have the same problem, and dragging the swatch from the Library to the document Swatch definitely does NOT work for me.
I understand why Larry thinks it should work, because that was also the first thing I tried.
I plead ignorance if there is another way, but I still believe this is the preferred logical modus operandi.

Hi Larry. I see. It is a file I have worked on previously, and the font is Myriad which I though came with the system. I just changed to Myriad Pro and the pink box disappeared. Thanks for the assistance, I know a new thing!

Use automator or applescript to capture and paste text

Hi,
I have two separate applications that need to share data and the developers are refusing to work with each other.
Many years ago, I worked in QA but in an MS environment and we had tools that could capture images and text and input that back in. I was hoping I could do something similar with either automator or applescript.
More specifically: This is for a dental office. The program that interfaces with the X-ray machine and processes the radiographs has a completely separate database from the patient management system. All of the patient information currently resides in a database within the patient management system so when we go to take an X-ray on a new patient, we have to retype all of the patient's information into the X-ray program. Double entry wastes time and has a higher probability of errors. I was hoping that after the assistant opens the patient's chart, either automator or applescript (or a 3rd party app) would be able to look at that screen, identify a few pieces of text that are always in the same place within the window (name, dob, gender, chart no., etc.) and copy that information and then paste it into the same fields in the X-ray program window.
Any ideas?

The real soluiton is to have a 3rd program that bridges them both.
I've done exactly this for clients. We normaly use Python because its open source and can link into any db out there.
Your talking about "screen scrubbers". I've used them to for software QC and automated testing. They don't work anymore since "data execution protection" and memory protection in general became popular.
You can write an Applescript (not sure Automator can handle it) to select any field of any running application and copy what is there, then paste it somepalce else.
So, in theory, you could make a script you run at the blank screen that goes and copies over the currently selected patient in the other App.
I'd really rather see the "bridge" app I mentioned first though.
Add support for "LDAP" to your software requirements and this problem will go away. I mean really, why let them spend money making a "patient" databse when they can use the services of an off-the-shelf LDAP server!

you cannot use jsp tags inside uix xml pages.
you can, however, use uix jsp tags inside jsp pages.

In the past I have used URLVariables with URLRequest and URLLoader to achieve this kind of requirement.
Check out http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=17_Networking_and_communications_3 .html which should be useful. My preference has always been to use this style instead of HTTPService objects, giving you a little more control which is what you need here.

Open Sans is available as an Edge Web font.
Which section of the Font menu did you select Open Sans from? If it was selected from the "System Fonts" section of the font menu then it will output as an image. To use the Web Font version, click "Add Web Fonts..." in the font menu then choose "Open Sans" from the available Edge Web Fonts.

Who to use "xfa.event.newText" for value and not text

Folder action to find and replace text and change line feeds

I want to use a folder action to find and replace text and change Mac carriage returns to DOS line feeds inside text files.
The text to be replaced is: "/Users/wim/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Music" (without the quotes)
This text has to be removed (i.e. replaced by an empty string)
The text occurs many times within each file.
The files are playlists exported from iTunes in the M3U format (which are text files). They contain Mac carriage returns. These need to be changed to DOS line feeds.
I have found the following two perl commands to achieve this:
To find and replace text: perl -pi -w -e 's/THIS/THAT/g;' *.txt
To change carriage returns to line feeds: perl -i -pe 's/\015/\015\012/g' mac-file
I know that it's possible to make a folder action with Automator that executes a shell script.
What I want to do is drop the exported playlists in M3U format in a folder so that the folder action will remove the right text and change the carriage returns.
My questions are:
Is it possible to make a folder action that executes command line commands instead of shell scripts?
What is the correct syntax for the two commands when used in a folder action shell script? Especially, how do I escape the slashes (/) in the string to be removed?

Ok, I've include an applescript to run a shell command. The applesript command quoted form makes a string that will end up as a single string on the bash command line. Depending on what you want to do, you may need multiple string on the bash command lines. I've included some information on folder actions.
It is easier to diagnose problems with debug information. I suggest adding log statements to your script to see what is going on. Here is an example.

How to set up a folder action.
1) right click on folder. click on Enable folder actions
2) Place script in
/Library/Scripts/Folder Actions Scripts
3) right click on folder. click on attach folder action
pick your script.
Create a new folder on the desktop & try.
You can put multiple folder actions on a folder. There are other ways of doing this.

In Snow Leopard it's at: /Applications/Utilities/AppleScript Editor
Copy the script text to the Applescript editor.
Note: The ¬ is typed as option+return. ption+return is the Applescript line continuation characters.
You may need to retype these characters.

Why does my signal drops and takes a long time to search and connect when I turn on or off my cellular data? And normal text messages are not getting delivered properly. It shows sent but later it will show try again, Is it just me?

I do not know what the problem is, but after the latest update it is really hard to send text messages. It is taking alot of time to send the messages, it is not the problem with the carrier because sending text messages with the same number in the same area is really easy on my normal nokia 1100. Please suggest me what I should check. Second problem I am facing is the carrier signal drops to nothing when I turn on the cellular data. It has to then search for the network and connect again the same happens when I turn the data off again. Please tell a solution. I do not think it is the problem with the hardware because the phone is hardly 2weeks old and everything was working properly with ios 6. It initaly had problem with the battery on updating to ios7 but that was rectified with the new update but again these are the new issues am facing.

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

Max and LV using daq libraries hang on startup

I am utilizing daq and daqmx libraries in my code. Two days ago my application which has been working for years started hanging up Labview on loading. I traced the problem to daq libraries. I can open any LV existing code as long as it does not include any daq or daqmx links. If I attempt to load any vis referencing daq libraries the LV hangs and nothing but a reboot can kill it.
Investigating this further I have noticed that NI-Max also hangs on statup.
XP error indicates "hungapp " error.
Yesterday I have uninstalled and reinstalled NI-DAQ lagacy and NI-DAQmx. It worked for a day but this morning I have the same issue I started with.
Is this a Windows XP issue related to some update or NI ?

I believe there may be a problem with some of the configuration files.
What version of the Traditional NI-DAQ and NI-DAQmx drivers are you
installing? What version of LabVIEW are you running? Did you install
any new software or change anything on your system recently to cause
LabVIEW and MAX to hang?
Try the following suggestions to get MAX to work.
Close MAX and Terminate the NI Device Loader service (may be called nidevldu or nipxirmu on PXI controllers).
Go to Control Panel»Administrative Tools»Services - Right click NI Device Loader and select Stop
Terminate any National Instruments Applications and processes.
Open
up Task Manager and look primarily for the NIMAX.EXE, nipalsm, and
nimxs processes. These are the most common tasks that will need to be
terminated even after all the applications have been closed.
Create and save a copy of the MAX data files and NIMAX.ini to a
new folder. Delete the files in the original Data folder and the
NIMAX.ini file from the MAX directory - Warning: this step will delete
all NI-DAQmx
virtual channels and SCXI chasses - but it won't affect any of the
traditional DAQ configuration.
Go to ..\National Instruments\MAX\Data\ and delete all of the files in this directory.
Go to ..\National Instruments\MAX\ and delete the NIMAX.ini file.
Restart the computer which should restart nidevldu (nipxirmu) service from the services control panel.
This
service can be restarted from the same place that it was stopped.
Verify that all the files you deleted from the ..\MAX\Data folder are
created again after restarting the service
Restart MAX and see if this fixed the issue.

I am putting together a single page flyer which will have light gradients and shadows on the objects.
Think Apple-ish light grays and shadows...
I would like to get an opinion here from someone in the know as I am much more of digital guy than print.
1) What is the lightest gray I can work with that would print well?
When setting up the CMYK color should I simply set it at say 10% 10% 10% 10% or is there some better mixture for light gray gradients. i.e. slightly blue for example, or rich black mixture.
2) When creating the gradients in illustrator, should I go from the gray to transparent or is it better to set up a gray to white gradient?
Finally,
When creating my supporting images with the shadows and gradients, would it be best just to create them in Photoshop and place them in my illustrator document and leave Illustrator for the text alone?

- It should not be necessary to use 10% across the board. It comes down to how you want the shadows and gradients to appear. You ask what is the "lightest" Gray. That depends on the press and paper. Let's also assume you are planning for high end offset on a high end glossy "White" stock ( paper ). A 10% Black is fairly reasonable, but you could plan for 5%K ( again, depends on press and paper ). A nice warm Gray could be achieved with 7.5%C, 7.5%M, 7.5%Y, 0%K; a nice cool Gray could be achieved via 2.5%C, 0%M, 0%Y, 7.5%K. I would cross check a Pantone Process Color Guide for a reasonable choice. Do not rely on the monitor.
2) When creating the gradients in illustrator, should I go from the gray to transparent or is it better to set up a gray to white gradient?
- It should not be necessary to set your gradient to transparent. A typical scenario would be K > 0W; only specific requirements demand transparency.

- That depends on the file, the background, and a few other considerations. The key to shadows and gradients in Illustrator is they be applied as part of the final step in the file prep process. If you create the shadows, for instance, in Photoshop, the end file size may end up larger than you anticipated. And, the shadow would be resolution dependent ( less flexibility ).

Before you get started with your file, contact the print vendor to find out what type of press and what type of paper they plan to use on your job ( of you haven't already ). Don't forget to set your document resolution in Illustrator ( assumed ) and the Raster Effects resolution. Another important thing to remember is nail down the actual Gray ( i.e., lookup in Pantone Process Color Guide printed on the paper type you plan to use on press ).

You can however share or import content from another library/account using homesharing.

My plan was to create a vault(put all my master files into an external harddrive) and then delete all my projects in my mac pro's harddrive. Is it the correct way to do it ? What should I do if I have thousands of raw files ? How should my workflow be? Can I use an external HD and use aperture through the vault,without keeping the master files on my computer's hard drive?? Or should I shoot raw+jpeg and store raw files in an external backup harddrive and import only jpegs into my aperture library?

There's a bit to learn. It will slowly make sense.
Aperture is an empty field. You're given a tractor and a whole bunch of attachments. What you grow, how, and where, is entirely up to you.
Vaults are for back-up and only for back-up. They have nothing to do with storing your working files.
When your Library outgrows your system drive (and for good performance, you should leave c. 20% of every drive empty), it's time to convert some of your image's Masters from Managed to Referenced. ("Managed" and "Referenced" refer to Masters, not to Libraries.)
There are hundreds of posts in the forum, and several pages in the User Manual on using Masters.
Many people run Aperture with the Library on their system disk, and most (or all) of their images' Masters on external FW drives. This is a good set-up. Note that you will likely have to take steps to back-up the data on your external drives.
If you do the above, there should be no reason to delete any Projects.
The choice of RAW or RAW+JPEG or JPEG depends on the kind of work you are doing. I capture RAW only -- but I don't do any commercial shoots. Pros on deadlines report that the RAW+JPEG works well for them. Capture JPEG if it saves you time. IMHO, there is not a good reason to shoot JPEG to save space (space is cheap; time expensive).
Short-term solution: buy and use a FW800 external 1 TB drive, formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and using Aperture relocate the Masters of all images older than 30 days to that drive. (Be sure to change your back-up strategy to include this new drive; you may need a second new drive.)
