Use Compact Express slot to interface eSATA
Hi,
I'm using an Embedded Controller PXI 8108, with a Compact Express slot.
I want to place the hard drive in an external enclosure and use an eSATA Compact Express interface to
connect to the enclosure.
There is a NI white paper (http://www.ni.com/white-paper/8604/en) which decribes the properties of the eSATA Compact Express card necessary
and I believe I have the correct card, see Solution 2 in white paper.
However when all is connected and powered the system does not boot.
The first thing I suspect is the BIOS Boot Order, but I see no way of choosing the Compact Express Slot/external
drive as a device from which to boot from 1st.
The Compact Express (eSATA) card was bought from Maplins (UK), part number: A34FK. The manufacturer
is st-lab.com , part no.: C-240 .
Any clues please ?
Gary.
Hi Gary,
I would suspect a couple scenarios:
(a) Your ExpressCard SATA adapter lacks the ability to be a boot device, or
(b) Your ExpressCard SATA adapter is bootable, but could not be configured by the BIOS, or
(c) Your ExpressCard SATA adapter is bootable, but was not correctly set as the first boot device in BIOS setup.
Scenario (a):
Here is a relevant snippet from the white paper you linked:
Another consideration is that ExpressCard eSATA adapters that use the PCI Express interface need to have an onboard Option ROM to allow OSs to boot from the external hard drive. Option ROM typically contains software, also called firmware, which is called by the BIOS of the embedded controller and informs the BIOS of the accessory’s functionality. As a general rule of thumb, if an ExpressCard eSATA supports some type of RAID, it most likely has an onboard Option ROM.
In this situation, a different ExpressCard that provides an Option ROM would need to be used. There is a recommended card in the white paper, although in truth it can be tricky to know without testing the ExpressCard unless you get lucky and see it documented on the specification sheet.
Scenario (b):
From BIOS Setup, ensure that the setting named "SCSI Drive Boot" (on the Boot Settings menu) is Enabled.
Although your device is not a SCSI device, this setting controls whether or not all disk based boot devices like SCSI (including a SATA adapter) can be set as bootable.
For good measure, I would also ensure that PXE Network Boot is Disabled to prevent other unrelated Option ROMs from loading and possibly conflicting.
Scenario (c):
The PXI-8108 BIOS boot menu has a tiered list of boot devices. If your device is bootable, it may not initially show up on the top level list. If, for example, more than one bootable hard drive exists, a new submenu item labeled: "Hard Drive BBS Priorities" would be generated on the Boot Setup menu page. Go into that submenu and priortize your device to the top of the list. Most likely it would be under "Hard Drive BBS Priorities", but I suggest doublechecking all the "Device" BBS Priorities entries that you see, if any.

Use of Express Slot Solid State Drive as a scratch drive
Is there a way to allow removeable drives to be used as a scratch drive?
I would like to use an express slot 32GB drive as a scratch drive in windows 7. The drive is loaded
by windows as a removeable drive. When I go to select it in CS4 the drive is not listed.
Windows loads it as a removable disk, not a local disk. If you use a USB external drive like a
western digital 500GB, via the usb port. Windows loads it as a local disk even though it's remote.
The expressslot drive should be plenty fast to drive a scratch drive.
Paul CaldwellZirynx:
The main problem with SSD drives is the space limitation. There are also reported difficulties with BootCamp and Windows, but that is not an issue for you. I believe they are available in larger capacities, but they become very expensive as you can see here.
Advantages include being very silent, and very fast.
Installation will be the same as a regular PATA Hard Disk Drive.
If the space limitation is not an issue for you, go for it.

Is there express card slot to install eSata ?
Hi,
Product Name: pavilion dv6
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
Product name: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment Notebook PC support.
Product number: LM610EA#A2N
According to the pictures of my product I posted below , there is no express card slot. So eSata is out. And as I was said, there is no real functional difference between an enclosure and a cable. Is there a very good option to have eStat port? Thanks a lot,
As you said my HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment Notebook PC support does NOT have [B]eSATA/USB combination port. So, I really don't see any eSata port on the case of my laptop, such as USB3, USB2 ports, and other connectors, such VGA, and HDMI, and so on.
However, my question is as long as my my HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment Notebook PC support does NOT have [B]eSATA/USB combination port, then I don't know if my existing internal Toshiba HDD drive is connected to an eSata interface port of my laptop or not.
Moreover, What I know is that an eSata port can be a port inside a PC, and not shown in the left/right side of the case of a PC like USB3/2. As a result, if I want to convert my existing internal Toshiba HDD drive as an external HDD to be connected to a USB 3.0/2.0 port, how could I do as long as my existing internal Toshiba HDD drive has only eSata interface port, or otherwise it cannot be installed inside my laptop via eSata port. -

Can i use logic exprees on a mac mini for recording? Ive seen alot of 8,12, and 16 track recorders with a cd burner and it seems like a logical and more productive gues for me to buy a macmini for the same thing of recording and then I can uses logic express, a far better program for recording. can the mac mini handle the load of processing tracks and how much ram should I uses? thanks tim
sorry, I'd like to butt in here:
I would like to do the same thing, so I am curious about this forum and rather than starting a new one, can I get some advice on this possibility:
Mac Mini
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
80GB Serial ATA drive
Glyph External HD 250 Gig
Mackie Onyx 1620 w/Firewire

thoughts?
The most number of tracks I could see at once would be 16.
Here is something I am most curious about...
Firewire Hard drive
Firewire Interface/mixer
Firewire camera for FCP

Using journalized data in an interface with aggragate function
Hi
I am trying to use the journalized data of a source table in one of my interfaces in ODI. The trouble is that one of the mappings on the target columns involves a aggregate function(sum). When I run the interface i get an error saying "not a group by expression". I checked the code and found that the jrn_subscriber, jrn_flag and jrn_date columns are included in the select statement but not in the group by statement(the group by statement only contains the remiaining two columns of the target table).
Is there a way around this? Do I have to manually modify the km? If so how would I go about doing it?
Also I am using Oracle GoldenGate JKM (oracle to oracle OGG).
Thanks and really aprreciate the help
Ajay'ORA-00979' When Using The ODI CDC (Journalization) Feature With Knowledge Modules Including SQL Aggregate Functions [ID 424344.1]
Modified 11-MAR-2009 Type PROBLEM Status MODERATED
In this Document
Symptoms
Cause
Solution
Alternatives :
This document is being delivered to you via Oracle Support's Rapid Visibility (RaV) process, and therefore has not been subject to an independent technical review.
Applies to:
Oracle Data Integrator - Version: 3.2.03.01
This problem can occur on any platform.
Symptoms
After having successfully tested an ODI Integration Interface using an aggregate function such as MIN, MAX, SUM, it is necessary to set up Changed Data Capture operations by using Journalized tables.
However, during execution of the Integration Interface to retrieve only the Journalized records, problems arise at the Load Data step of the Loading Knowledge Module and the following message is displayed in ODI Log:
ORA-00979: not a GROUP BY expression
Cause
Using both CDC - Journalization and aggregate functions gives rise to complex issues.
Solution
Technically there is a work around for this problem (see below).
WARNING : Oracle engineers issue a severe warning that such a type of set up may give results that are not what may be expected. This is related to the way in which ODI Journalization is implemented as specific Journalization tables. In this case, the aggregate function will only operate on the subset which is stored (referenced) in the Journalization table and NOT over the entire Source table.
We recommend to avoid such types of Integration Interface set ups.
Alternatives :
1.The problem is due to the missing JRN_* columns in the generated SQL "Group By" clause.
The work around is to duplicate the Loading Knowledge Module (LKM), and in the clone, alter the "Load Data" step by editing the "Command on Source" tab and by replacing the following instruction:
<%=odiRef.getGrpBy()%>
with
<%=odiRef.getGrpBy()%>
<%if ((odiRef.getGrpBy().length() > 0) && (odiRef.getPop("HAS_JRN").equals("1"))) {%>
,JRN_FLAG,JRN_SUBSCRIBER,JRN_DATE
<%}%>
2. It is possible to develop two alternative solutions:
(a) Develop two separate and distinct Integration Interfaces:
* The first Integration Interface loads data into a temporary Table and specify the aggregate functions to be used in this initial Integration Interface.
* The second Integration Interfaces uses the temporary Table as a Source. Note that if you create the Table in the Interface, it is necessary to drag and drop the Integration Interface into the Source panel.
(b) Define two connections to the Database so that the Integration Interface references two distinct and separate Data Server Sources (one for the Journal, one for the other Tables). In this case, the aggregate function will be executed on the Source Schema.

Hi, I am trying to set up an airport express hub to work with a Star tsp100 receipt printer and IPad 2. The IPad is being used to accept credit card payments and I was hoping to print receipts out wirelessly using the airport express and receipt printer. I checked to make sure the airport express has the latest firmware and it does. The IPad software is also updated to the latest 7.1. I then connected the Airport express and IPad and the network setup with no problems. I connected the receipt printer to the airport express using the USB slot available. While the printer comes up as available, when I attempt to print something, I get the error message "An error occurred printing this document" and I can cancel or Try again. No matter how many times I try, I continue to get this message and I lost as to the cause. When I disconnect and reconnect, another instance of the printer appears, but receive the same cryptic error message when I try to print. Totally lost, please help
Hi kelston3,
In order to print from an iPad you will need to use a printer that is compatible with AirPrint, which is described in the following article -
About AirPrint
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
AirPrint printers must be wireless on your network - not connected via USB to the base station. There is a list of printers that are known to be compatible with AirPrint in the article.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I am looking for a laptop that still has either a firewire port or an
express card slot that will take a firewire adapter. I understand that
this is old technology but I use firewire for my live streaming with a
panasonic dvx100b camcorder. I would like to have at least i5 or i7. Is
there any of your laptops that have this. If none of the new ones have
this what would be the latest model that would?Firewire and express slot is a dying tech on PC laptop and you will have a hard time finding it on newer laptops. The only laptops that I could think off hand that would have that option are Desktop replacement laptop and those are not lightweight by any standards. I don't have one model in particular but only those laptop that are called Desktop replacement would still have those ports that you would use. So you should really contact HP support and ask them and they can give you a firm answer if any of their laptop lines have those options your looking for.

I am interested in anyone who has experience with laptops with PC Express slot(s) and the NI MXI Express card. I need to know which model are compatible. I have already read the posting in InfoLabVIEW by Murali Manohar Ravindran | PXI Remote Controllers Marketing Engineer | National Instruments | [email protected] | 512-683-5085.
I am looking for more options. I am trying to get my company to purchase a laptop for use as a 'portable' measurement platform. We already have a PXI chassis. My boss is reluctant to purchase any laptop that doesn't have a 'proven' record with the MXI Express card.
RoyHave you visited the following page for laptops which have been tested?

MSI Gaming 9 AC - PCI Express Slots Position
Hey guys,
Just recently I finished setting up my new machine (even got a problem while updating the BIOS on the mobo, which has been solved with the support from folks of this forum =D) and then after I while using it, I realize that the space between the first and second PCI express slot is just so small, it's my first time running a SLI machine, got two GTX 970 G1 Gaming from Gigabyte and they are so close to each other that after installing some monitoring programs, I can check that the temperature on the first card (the one with no room to breath) goes almost instantaneously to 79ºC~80ºC when playing a high demanding game while the second stays around 64ºC~65ºC, with both cards running at 100% fan speed.
And since the standard thermal limit of the GTX 970 is 79ºC, the gpu clock goes way down from almost 1400 mhz to 1100 mhz to cool it for a while and then boost it again, turn it down to cool it again (and again, again again), there is a noticeable difference of fps while this is happening so I don't know if that is something that is suppose to happen on SLI system or if the cards are really too close to each other, I have check some other motherboards and even the Gaming 7 AC has those two first slots with more space between then.
Is not possible at all to use the third slot to SLI on this mobo to make it work on 8x? There is a solution or some sort of modification to address this? I attached a pics to illustrate it better too.
Thanks! Thanks for answering guys, my case is a Corsair Obsidian 750D, so there's plenty of space and also two front in-take fans and one exhausting on the back (I also have a Corsair H100i cooler for the CPU and when gaming, set the fans to maximum speed), in some cases I see almost 20ºC of difference between both cards, yesterday I set the temperature limit a little bit above the standard 79ºC to 82º and while the main card was running on constant 82ºC, the second was somewhere between 62 to 64 degrees, I'm kinda worried about this temps and how it could affect the cards, if they are heating way beyond they should and it if could impact the durability of the physical components, cause a sudden malfunction or literally fry something. Am I worrying too much about it?
It's a shame that it seems to be really difficult to find a XPower AC Z97 board here in Brazil, MSI could have also leave a little bit more of space like the Gaming 7 has, there's a technical reason on why they leave the PCI slots closer to each other on the 9 comparing it to 7? -

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express. I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not. I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result. I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.
