Use delete keys in custom key shortcuts?

I know there are OS X shortcuts that use the delete key, like "cmd + del" to "move to trash" and with Panther I could use the delete keys in keyboard shortcuts. But when I try to use the delete key or keys like "home" or "page down" in System Preferences to make shortcut, it just makes a "TINK" noise.
Is it possible to use these "TINK" keys, maybe by editing com files or something?
I would like to change the "move to trash" to just del instead of "cmd + del" as I don't like to use two hands to delete something.
And I also made a service with automator to launch Activity Monitor, and I would like to make the shortcut as "^ + cmd + del" as I am used to launching task manager in Windows with a similar hand gesture.

I would like to change the "move to trash" to just del instead of "cmd + del" as I don't like to use two hands to delete something.
To use just one hand for that, if you are using a Magic Mouse just right-click on the file and select "Move to Trash" from the contextual menu that appears.
I would not try to tinker with that Command-Delete button in the manner you describe. Reason - say you are renaming a file, enter a wrong character and press Delete to remove the character - the file might disappear into the Trash.
Likewise, working in any text app, such as TextEdit or a word-processor, or in a spreadsheet, might get weird if Delete no longer does what is expected by the program.

    Happy new year Java fans!
I have a small problem but annoing me a lot!!
Cannot use delete key or back space on the keybord in Sun Java St. Creator! It is ok outside the creator!!
I am using solaris 10 on x86 machine.
    Thanks for help

Similar issues have been filed against netbeans and mostly they seem to happen when the keybindings have been modified:
This is a bug in new Options dialog. To make it work, just delete the wrongly
defined shortcuts in xmls in ~/.netbeans/dev/config.
btw, can you run creator with a different userdir (by renaming the existing userdir) and see if the problem still persists? If it does not, then it would mean there is some keybinding setting in the current user directory that is causing this problem.

  • Using "delete" key on Apple's wireless keyboard shut down applications on my ipad, such as Mail, in Japanese Font.  Any solution?

I use Apple's wireless keyboard to type email messages on my ipad.  Often applications, such as Mail, would shut down suddenly after using "delete" key on the wireless keyboard.  This happens when I am typing in Japanese language.  It is really annoying because I will lose all the text that are not saved.  Any suggestions?

Sorry but that was a completely pointless post.

  • Layer Styles and using Delete Key PSE4

    Hello,
Slowly getting getting to know PSE4, will take more time. Finding lots of tips here in this forum and other similiar forums and sites.
    Have two quick Questions:
    1. It was mentioned "Jodi's Spedia Layer Styles". Is this a tutorial or actual styles? More info on this would be appreciated.
    2. When doing the last stage of a vignette, I had to use the backspace or delete key. I found this out by reading in this forum. Where is that documented in the Help? Is the backspace/delete key the only way, or is there a menu/mouse click also?
    Using XP Pro SP2
    TonyC

Hi and thanks everyone for the replies. I will have to take another look in the Help Section, I looked everywhere and could not find that shortcut listed. Maybe I was looking for Backspace, and should be looking for Delete.
I will be contacting Jodi shortly via email.
Am confused about the "Adobe Photoshop Elements One-Click Wow by Jack Davis, ISBN 0-321-30468-3." Is this a book? Doing a web search all I can find is a book. Can someone send me a good link for more info on this. If actual styles and layers, will it work in PSE4?
Something else: Please don't take this the wrong way, but I like to know is the subscription worth getting? I'm 50/50 on getting it or not.
    Thanks again!

  • Can't delete messages using delete key in Outlook 2007

After upgrading to Exchange 2010, we are seeing an intermittent problem where users in Outlook 2007 can't delete messages from their inbox using the delete key.  Opening the message and clicking delete from there will delete it from the inbox.
They can also drag the messages from the inbox to deleted items.
The issue comes and goes during the day.  One minute delete will work and then it won't and then it will again.
    Thanks,
    Crystal

    Hi Crystal,
How many uses have the issue?
Did you check the Outlook add-in or Anti-Virus application?
Please check whether there is any error/warning event in the Event Viewer.
Please recreate the Outlook profile for user if possible.
Please try to run the cmdlet New-MailboxRepairRequest.

  • Using Delete Key on Files in Collections

Is there a way to get the delete key to delete a file from a collection WITHOUT deleting the underlying file? I know right-click remove does this, but I wanted an easier way.
I never want to delete a file from my system when viewing it in a collection.
    [Adobe Bridge CS5 4.0.5.11]
    Thanks,
    Drew

Is there a way to get the delete key to delete a file from a collection WITHOUT deleting the underlying file?
No, you do have to use the remove button at the top of the content panel for doing so
I never want to delete a file from my system when viewing it in a collection
You are right, it should not even be possible to delete the underlying file from a collection, this is a major flaw in the design of collections to my opinion. Deleting should only affect the alias in the collection not the underlying file itself.
You can set the delete key to either remove or reject (this is a choice you get after default install and hitting delete key) but that's it.

  • Using Alt+Key shortcuts in Chromeless application makes windows beep

Tell me I'm correct about the following:
It is impossible to use mx:MenuBar with mnemonics and/or have 'Ctrl+Alt+Key' appear in the menu as you can with FlexNativeMenu or NativeMenu.
It is impossible to use any Alt+Key shortcuts to activate a control without Windows® beeping at you when you use the key.
It is impossible to use a s:Button or even an mx:Button with an underlined letter without making a specific skin just for that button.
It is impossible to comprehend why such a standard activation method -- using the Alt+Key would be overlooked by a company leading the pack in RIA or any other type of interface development.
So who is on drugs, I hope it is me and not Adobe.
Wait, don't tell me-- you want me to extend your framework so it includes these fundamental things??

After further research, the way to get around alt-key beeping and get rid of the system menu in a chromeless app is to use:
    stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN_INTERACTIVE;
and then do some restructuring so your outer client window is now fully transparent and has no skin, and your inner client window is a child who can be moved or sized in its container.
But, this solution does not allow native window states: Minimized, etc. The best you can do is emulate them, but the OS will only see a window that only has one possible state.
Since it has no system/native menu, the OS won't beep on alt+key. I am speaking of windows only, and have no idea what goes on in a Mac environment with this work-around.

  • If I delete a message using delete key, AND the "Find in this message" box is open, should the focus switch to the search box, or remain in the message list?

If the "Find in this message" search box has been left open, but I have selected a message in the message pane, if I use the delete key to delete the current message, the focus moves to the "Find" box. It took me a while to figure out why the focus did not remain in the message list so I could delete the next message. I can regain the desired behavior by closing the search box, but it would be nice to not need to. This is on a Windows 7 OS. I should check to see how it behaves on a Linux box.

    Hi,
    for the Points
Sometime I think I would like it if I could delete an iMessage completely.
Other times when reading them on my iPhone I wish to leave them until I can answer them with something that is on my Mac.
It seems that as a device or a Mac that is off line can "catch up" on iMessages sent within a few hours would suggest that the iMessages are held on the server for a period.
It would be handy for different levels of "deletion".

  • Delete key problem

    Hi All,
I am new to MacBook, I recently bought a 15" MacBook Pro. Lately, my girlfriend found that if press delete for more than 3 seconds then release it. The shutdown menu pops up, it is annoying since we use delete key frequently to delete the texts. We tried to look for keybinding at keyboard settings. There is no such option. I know that for the shutdown menu, you need to press Control+Eject, not delete. Is my MacBook Pro faulty? Thanks.
    Jacky

Yes, it sounds like you have a hardware problem.

  • When in email I can not use the delete key to erase a word

When in email I can not use the delete key to erase a word.

Yes, it does.  It is only in my email through Charter that it does not work.  I restored all keyboard shortcuts to the default, but that did not fix the problem.  I have a MacBook Air.
I called Charter also, who said it was a Mac problem.
    Thank you.

    rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

  • How can I restore Thunderbird behavior so I can delete emails by pressing delete key multiple times (without using mouse to change focus back to message list)?

    Thunderbird 24.3.0 (latest under OpenBSD)
I (like most people) get spam in my inbox. When there are multiple spam messages in a row in my inbox I used to click on the first message and then press the delete key repeatedly for each sequential spam message.
After upgrading, this doesn't work. Instead, when I click a message it opens in the message preview pane and moves the focus to the message. Thus I need to click twice to even be able to press the delete key to delete one message. When I press the delete key, the message is deleted and the highlighted message becomes the next one in the list. This opens the message in the preview pane and again shifts the focus to the message. Thus I can't press the delete key again but must move the mouse to click on the message before I can delete it.
As a result, what used to be a very fast process of weeding through spam has become a real annoyance.
I realize I can hide the message preview pane to prevent the focus from moving, but this means I must delete solely based on the email subject/sender -- or open each message (which is even slower).
I also realize that I can press tab multiple times (sometime 4, sometimes many more) to shift the focus back but that's not much faster than using the mouse.
How can I prevent Thunderbird from shifting the focus away from the email list panel unless I actually click somewhere else?

Well said! And you said it about six weeks ago. And 4 other people said "Me Too." - I guess we're screwed.
I guess it's time to switch to GMail.
Such a trivial thing, but it irritates me every single time.
    MOZILLA - YOU'RE GOING DOWNHILL...

  • Recently, the delete key and rt click delete do not remove a message. Have to restart T'Bird to be able to delete a message. Using v 24.5.0

    Using Thunderbird 24.5.0, W7, up-to-date in fixes
The delete key and the right click delete suddenly don't delete a messsage.
Restarting Thunderbird and then they both work.
What should I be looking for?

I tried that - but same result.

  • My delete key use to work as a back key but not just operates as delete key

Up until yesterday my delete key would back up between windows but now just operates as a delete key.  Has anyone else experienced this?

What version of XP do you have? I believe that if you have XP pro installed you can do the following, although others claim you need a server software download from micrsoft. but give this a try, if it doesn't work, no harm done.
    After installing,
    1) go to Start>Run
    2) Enter "remapkey" (witout quotes)
A nice GUI utility pops up to let you remap keys on your keyboard. You can use it to remap the delete key. I suggest using the Right Command key.
After saving, reboot and you'll be able to use Ctrl-Alt-(Right Command) to do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete and logon to Windows domains and other useful things.

Huh.. Interesting. I went back to check these proceedures and found there is a difference between using the return key or the space bar as the action command.
tabbing the blue ring moves the selection and then spacebar takes that action. The return key takes action of only the blue collored button.
