Use DVD snapshots in SpeedGrade CC

Here's a cool workflow to easily introduce snapshots from your favorite movies into SpeedGrade CC to aid your grading.  I find this helps rapidly improve the artistry of my grades.
First, you need to be able to open your reference film in Quicktime 7.  I use Handbrake to create an .m4v file with the standard Apple TV preset.
Next, with the reference frame open in Quicktime 7, choose "Export" and select "Movie to Picture".
You'll end up with a .pct file on your desktop.  Drag it into iPhoto.  Select the image in iPhoto and select "File" and then "Export".  For "Kind" choose "JPEG", for "Quality" choose "Maximum", and for "Size" choose "Full Size".
Now you have a JPEG on your desktop.  Drag it into Photoshop.  In Photoshop, choose "Image" from the drop down menu, and then "Image Size".
You need to adjust the image to the same size as the footage you're grading in SpeedGrade.  For example, if you're working with 1920 by 1080 footage, you should change the width to "1920" and "Pixels".  In my case, I'm working in 4K, so I changed the width to "4096" pixels.  Click "OK".
Now choose "Save As" from the "File" drop down menu.
Choose "Targa" for "Format", and click "Save".
And then click "OK".
Now you need to get this Targa image in the correct folder.  The file path is Documents, Adobe, SpeedGrade, 7.0, settings, and finally snapshots.  Put the image in that "snapshots" folder.
Finally, launch SpeedGrade and prepare to grade your footage.  Toggle open the right panel and choose "Snapshots".  The reference image should be waiting.  Click on it to open a two-up display.  Look how sad and bleak my footage looks side by side!
But there's something about side by side 2 up that inspires!  Twirl the dials...and behold...
Okay - quick adjustment and needs work but you get the idea!  This CC capacity alone will insure that I stick to SpeedGrade over all the other options for my grading work.  Hope you enjoyed.

Thank you, Dennis, for the comment and more importantly for your participation in this forum.  I'm aware of the auto-shotmatch function, and I'm sure there will be instances where it will come in handy, but one of the main reasons I'm exploring (and ADORING) SpeedGrade is because I'm trying to get away from "Magic" one-click solutions.
So many DSLR users endlessly talk, blog, and post about "film looks", but so few seem to really push the envelope on their material the way legends like David Fincher always have.  I think SpeedGrade is a big step for me in the right direction.
I think many, many Adobe video app users would embrace this software if they could figure it out.  The introductory vids on Adobe aren't nearly enough - the interface is just that different from other Adobe apps.  Without the fambulous Peachpit Press book, I wouldn't be here.
I hope this software continues to be supported by Adobe.  I hope to see support for the Motion Jpeg codec used in the Canon 1D-C, to see a film grain function added, and to see an easier way to paste looks from clip to clip.
Hoping to see this product catch on in a bigger way, and thank you again for you role in seeing it do so.

  • How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?

I had somebody create a DVD for me using DVD Studio Pro. (This was a compilation of many different videos.) It turned out great.
I now want to make a DVD of one of those videos on my own using iDVD '08.
I have the raw video/audio files. But, my problem is the raw files that were used for the DVD Studio Pro project are separated into one video file and one audio file. I don't know how I can get them both into iDVD. I was told that I have to recombine these two files into one file. But, how do I do this and still maintain the best quality?
(I am not a video expert by any means, but I can tell you that the video file is a ".mpeg" and the audio file is an ".ac3". When looking at the .mpeg file in the finder it lists its Kind as "MPEG Movie" and when looking at the .ac3 file in the finder it lists its Kind as "Unix Executable File".)
(I'm using iDVD 7.0.1 - I do have Quicktime Pro - I do not have the Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback component - I do not have DVD Studio Pro)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Q: How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?
    A: You don't, essentially.
DVDSP is apple's top end app and it is intended to be used with FCP > Compressor > DVDSP. All of these are pro apps.
i-Apps are consumer apps all of which are QT based. With that in mind ....
now that doesn't mean you can't use FCP > iDvd. You can. But you have to do it in a way that iDvd will read all the files (meaning you must think in terms of QuickTime and export in this way). So when you export your QT File / Movie from FCP over to iDvd, it will look something like this hopefully regardless of the raw image & audio files you have already compiled which unfortunately will NOT work with i-Apps BUT will work with apple's pro apps which is the intended workflow / direction of said files in the first place.
Btw ... if your QT movie has chapter markers then please use the following settings so iDvd can read these markers. (if on the other hand you were looking to export this file to DVDSP; then you would choose DVDSP Markers.
Let me know if the above helps. If not, just come on back.

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • Video extracted using DVD x DV won't export

I'm using DVD x DV (v. 1.34) to extract video from a DVD for use in an iMovie project (I have iMovie '08, 7.1.1). To extract I used the iMovie 6 Final Cut setting. The video looks good in iMovie and I edited it etc. but then when I exported the project the video portion was black. Is there any way to fix this?

turns out i used expert settings/animation and changing it to expert settings Apple intermediate codec seems to be working now--do i get credit for solving my own problem?

  • Lose sound with optical speakers after using DVD Player

For some reason when I launch DVD Player my sound will stop on all other applications. Quitting DVD Player won't fix this either. In iTunes, the song won't even begin playing. I've tried checking Audio MIDI Setup, and for my ouput I'm only allowed to choose "None". When I try to select Built-in Audio it won't let me. However, before I launch DVD Player Built-in Audio will output to the speakers. My speakers are Logitech 5.1 Z5500's and I am using the optical connections. They didn't come with any sort of drivers and seem to work fine before using DVD Player, so I don't really know what's up.
    Any help is greatly appreciated,
    Powermac G5 Dual 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Logitech Z5500 Digital Speakers

In DVD Player's preferences when Disc Setup -> Audio Output is set to "Digital Out - Built-in Audio" the AC3 stream is sent to the speakers. This is an encoded stream straight from the disc that provides the 5.1 channel surround sound. The computer cannot take the sound from other applications and mix it with the AC3 stream because it would first have to decode the stream, mix the sound and then re-encode the stream. This is very processor intensive and your system would take a big performance hit.
To get sounds from other applications while watching a DVD change Disc Setup -> Audio Output to "System Sound Output". You'll lose the 5.1 output from the movie but will hear the sounds from other applications.

  • Satellite M45 DVD-RAM writer using DVD+R DL

I am not able to write on DVD+R DL. No problem with DVD+R. Did not use DVD+R DL until now.
Is this a known problem? Is there a firmware upgrade?
    Help will be appriciated.

    >This problem commenced when I upgraded my machine to windows 8.
Why you did not mention this early that this happened after Windows 8 installation?
This theme was already solved here in the forum… would really recommend using the Advanced Search option here in the forum to find similar thread. Its really not necessary to create duplicate themes…

  • Using DVD+R or DVD-R using CS4 and Encore CS4

Does it matter whether I burn to DVD+R or DVD-R discs?  In the past I have used DVD+R which seem to work pretty well when I play the DVDs on various machines; but are there any advantages/disadvantages of the two types that I should know about?
I use a Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-5240S ATA device and an LG HL-DT-ST BD-RE BHO8L520 ATA device
    Thank you.

    those days have long gone
I agree - with current DVD players. However, there are some older players out there, that will choke on +R, or -R (depends on the model). Once, it WAS a big concern, but so long as all clients have current equipment, it should not matter.

PS - I also use +R Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden, and have zero issues. However, I do keep some -R blank discs in stock, just in case.

  • Can I use DVD SP for an interactive presentation?

    Howdy.
I have a client who wants a standalone presentation that can be played on a display at a tradeshow booth, but also wants it to be a speaker support presentation that pauses on each slide.
I'm thinking about doing it in Flash, but I was wondering if I could do this in DVD SP.
I could create a main menu with the two versions listed, fine.
But on the speaker support version, it needs to play and pause each slide and then continue to the next slide when the speaker clicks.
From my experience with pausing DVD, the interlaced nature makes it look bad paused, so I was thinking that each slide would be a track in DVD SP and I would just have each video (slide) hold on the last frame for a few minutes. I'd have buttons on the screen to go to the next track and the previous track.
Do you think that will work? Is there a better way?
The reason I'd prefer to use DVD SP over Flash is you just put a DVD in and it plays whereas Flash has computer/OS support issues and PC screen resolution issues and my client would need a PC in their booth versus just a DVD player.
    Make sense?
I appreciate any tips or help.
    Thank you!
    Scot

So I don't see any way to have the remote control jump backwards on tracks. The only way I made it go forward is I put an End Jump at the end of the track and then used the Track Skip Forward button. But this doesn't work to go backwards, obviously.
I could use chapter markers and put every slide on a single track and jump between chapter markers easily, but it doesn't pause at the end of each chapter.
Am I missing anything obvious to create a "slide" presentation with motion graphics in DVD SP?
    Thanks!

  • Can I use DVD+R disks with my MacBookPro, OS10.7.5, and iMovie 6 and IDVD 7.1.2

Can I use DVD+R disks with my MacBookPro, OS10.7.5, and iMovie 6 and iDVD 7.1.2  ???? I have always used DVD-R.  I made a mistake in ordering and got 100 DVD+R .  Would it be advisable to return them?

Yes, you can use them.  As I recall the only concern is that they may not work in DVD players manufactured before 2002.

  • On G71-340US: very low volume when using DVD player, but OK when using Windows Media Player.

Just purchased new laptop G71-340US.  Volume (at full tilt) is decent when using Windows Media Player, but when using DVD player, volume is so low I can't really hear volume on a movie unless room is completely quiet, and I am right in front of laptop. Any suggestions, or is it really this bad?

I don't have the answer, but I certainly agree. The G71-340us is severly under powered in the audio department. You would think with the extra room in the 17in. chasis they could have put a sound system with a lot more power. Other than that it's a great machine.

  • Using DVD@ccess for .PDF (not clear to me in Manual)

So I've got a link typed into a certain page of the DVD to link to a .pdf file. The link is typed as:
    file:///DVDname/foldername/file.pdf
This is how it tells me to link it in the Manual, however whenever I burn a test disc, put it in the computer, check the "enable DVD@ccess" box in the DVD Player prefs, and test it, it does not open the file. How is this not working? Do I have to place the folder in a specific location when the DVD begins to build and format, or do I have to include the full line of folder names (folders within folders) when I type in the address above? Am I selecting the wrong folder when I choose the "content" folder before building the DVD?

    Good links from Drew...
The process is complicated. I'll try to make it simple.
First off, your pdf file needs to be in a folder somewhere on your machine - let's call it EXTRAS. That folder itself now needs to be in a parent folder as well, let's call that one ROM_CONTENT. For simplicity just set this up on your desktop for now.
From within DVDSP you need to set the location of the pdf file in the property inspector, but you do this in two places. First off, click on the disc icon in the outline view and then look in the property inspector for the ROM section. Use the 'Browse' facility to specify the outer folder you made earlier, and make sure the path in the property inspector points to the location of 'ROM_CONTENT'.
Now, in the menu that is going to hold the DVD@ccess link you also specify the path to the file, but this time you set up the path as it would appear after the disc is built. If your pdf file is called 'products' and your DVD itself is called 'My_Disc' then the URL that you put in the menu needs to be:
    file:///My_Disc/EXTRAS/products.pdf
Note that you *do not* use the name of the parent folder... this is very important!
When DVDSP builds the disc it will place the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders at the root level (the first thing you see if you open the disc in your finder). When you use DVD@ccess it will also put a folder to hold the @ccess.exe file with instructions to PC users, and it will also put whatever it finds inside the ROM_CONTENT folder at the root level of the disc. In the example here it finds a folder called EXTRAS and so the root of your disc looks nice and tidy - four folders. If you didn't use the inner folder then your pdf would appear as a file on the root... which to me is plain messy.
Now, since the folder called EXTRAS is now at the root level and holding the file to launch, that's what you MUST specify when writing the menu URL.
Finally, in order to see this working on your Mac (simulator) you need to turn on the DVD@ccess prefs in both DVDSP and DVD Player. Once done, the file should launch your default pdf viewer (probably 'Preview'). If it doesn't then there is either something wrong with the paths you have used inside DVDSP, or there is something wrong with your Mac! I'd suspect the paths before anything else...

  • Using DVD+R ......?

I'm a newbie to Mac (one week)
I have been trying to use the DVD+R discs and it seems that the computer is not reconizing it and placing it on the desktop. Is this a problem with the settings ( x 8...16..) or just the fact that its a +R. Would you recommend -R.
Can CD be used for video clips/movies? then what would be the benefit of using DVDs?
I think I will try some other disc types.
    What do you think?
    iMac G5 1.9   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Musk,
You indicate that the loaded disk is not showing up on the desktop. Is that the only indication your going off of?
It is possible for a blank DVD or CD to not show up on the desktop by default based on your preference settings. See CD/DVD preferences under System Settings.
You can verify this by opening a Finder window to see if it shows up as a burn disk in the left panel. Or check in iTunes or iDVD to see if they recognize it for burning.
With reference to media type, to date I've successfully burned DVD+R, -R, +RW disks manufactured by Memorex, HP, Imation, and Office Depot. I've used x4, x8, and x16 media with out problems. DVD video disk is much higher quality, storage, and compatibility over CD video disks.

  • Nero "power calibration" stops recording using DVD+R or CD-R

I have problems to record with Mat****a UJ-820S on my unit when using DVD+R or CD-R, but no with DVD-R. Is a new firmware the solution? and in that case, where can i get it?
The problem is a "power calibration" with nero that stops the recording.
    Thanks

    Hi Barrie,
Thank you for your answer. Well, mi notebook is a Toshiba Satellite A50-110. The media that I always use is TDK or Verbatim. I've got my notebook since one year ago and i never had problems to burn any media until one month ago. Since that, the burning process has no problem with DVD-R but it stops a few seconds after begining when using DVD+R or CD-R. The error message is "power calibration error" (in spanish "Error de calibracion de potencia").
    Thanks.

  • Using multiple snapshots of one image

I am trying to create a collage using mutiple snapshots of one image (essentially different colours). Having difficulty using the snapshots? New to Lightroom today, so hopefully there is a simple solution.

You could try using virtual copies. I often make a VC for a black and white version; so it would work the same for your different colors. You create a VC simply by selecting a thumbnail using the menu:
    Photo >> Create Virtual Copy
You can make as many as you wish, and they do not duplicate the files on your hard drive – they are stored in the catalog as metadata.
