Use eMac as G5 monitor?

G'day,
As I've picked up a prev model AppleTV, I've really no need to keep my PowerMac down in the loungeroom.
That means I have no screen for it however, as I was using my TV.
What options are available to me to use my eMac as a "monitor" for the PowerMac? Screen sharing? Ubunto? Ethernet?
Guess it's kinda an overkill, having 2 computers running, but money is not something I'll be seeing for a while.
cheers
cosmic

Hi-
Screen sharing over ethernet network is probably the quickest and easiest.
I use Vine Server with Leopard machines, but Chicken of the VNC is also fine:

Depending on the eMac, you may or may not need a crossover cable:

  • Using an emac as a monitor for a mac mini

    Hi,
Sorry if the question was already asked, but a quick search in the forum brought no answer.
I have an emac (OS9) and a mac mini(OSX). I'd like to use the emac as a monitor for the mac mini. Is it possible? How? (Both are G4, although I don't think that's relevant : I don't want to use them at the same time, only to use the Emac as a "screen")
    Many thanks.

I happen to know for a fact that you can use the internal screen on an iMac G3 333, and presumably also a 266 and 233. It has a fixed horizontal frequency so it will only display the resolutions that you can choose with it's motherboard installed: 640x480@117Hz, 800x600@95Hz, and 1024x768@75Hz. With DisplayConfigX I was even able to get other resolutions, as long as I stayed within the 60kHz horizontal frequency. If try to set it to any other resolution and refresh rate it will not work, so the best way to test it is to have another screen as your main screen so that you can set the resolutions on the iMac screen from there. I imagine that the screen in the eMac does not have a fixed horizontal frequency, so if you got the pinouts, you could probably get it working. However, I made a custom video cable for a slot loading iMac G3, and I couldn't get it to work.

  • Using an Emac as a monitor for a G5?

Is it possible to use an older Emac as a monitor for a G5 tower? Are there adapters for such a purpose? Thanks

Is it possible to use an older Emac as a monitor for a G5 tower?
Not without setting up software such as ScreenRecycler or the built-in functionality in Mac OS X 10.5. All options require usage of a standalone monitor on the G5 for the setup.

  • How do I connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?

    Hi !
I was wondering if it were possible to  connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?
My older imac is from 2006. The new one is a 2012 imac.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^

  • How do I connect my MacBook Pro to an Insignia TV to use it as a monitor?

How do I connect my MacBook Pro to an Insignia Television set to use it as a monitor?

Depends on your model.... You can use wifi, via the Apple TV. The Apple TV connects to the TV via HDMI. If the Macbook Pro has HDMI, use that.

Probably.  Any information about the monitor?

  • My macbook 2008 screen went black a few months ago. I've been using it with a monitor. Today it's working. I have a feeling it's going to die at any time. Is it possible that a software patch fixed this ? Is there a utility I can run to test the screen ?

    Model : Macbook 2008
Symptoms: The screen was, intermittently, going black last year and then went black completely. I have been using it on a monitor ever since.
I can see the screen with a flashlight.
I completely erased the drive and loaded OSx 10.7. I believe that's the last version of OSx Mac will be supporting on this computer.
When I booted up the computer this morning the screen came on !
While typing this question, my screen went black again, not to return.
    So sad.
I did bring it to Apple and they believed the entire screen needed to be replaced.
They say that they tried a new inverter and it didn't work.
I have a feeling I'm just out of luck unless I want to cough up the $300 to fix the screen.
Although it is a solid machine, 2Ghz processor with 4 gigs of ram, it is still six years old.
I imagine that's like putting a new transmission in a 95 Honda civic. Yeah, it's a reliable car but it's old and it's probably going to break again.
I love my mac so much but I can't justify buying a new one or  paying to fix this old one.
I have a Gateway dual booting Windows 7 and ubuntu linux that's actually pretty slick and has taken it's place on business trips and coffee shop excursions.
If anyone has any thoughts or feedback I'd appreciate it.

The current Apple hardware warranty provides the following coverage for replacement parts:
A replacementpart or product, including a user-installable part that has been installed in accordance withinstructions provided by Apple, assumes the remaining warranty of the Apple Product orninety (90) days from the date of replacement or repair, whichever provides longer coveragefor you.
Check your particular warranty and see where you stand as to the period of coverage.
    Good luck,
    Ray

  • I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions? Thanks

I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "HD to VGA adapter converter"?
Do you mean have an HDMI to VGA adapter connected the the Mini's HDMI port?
Or maybe you plugged n the the included HDMI to DVI adapter and then connected a DVI to DVI adapter?
In either case that will not work since VGA is analog and the Mini's HDMI port is digital only.
You need to purchase a mini displayport to VGA adapter. It plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/B/mini-displayport-to-vga-adapter
Make sure you get a name--brand one. I purchased some el cheapo, no-name ones and they did not work

  • How to make use of AM Pool Monitor

    Hi,
I get Java.lang.OutOfMemory when i run my OA application depoyed in the server.
(It works fine for 5 to 6 rounds of testing.next time when i access the page I get the error)
Oracle FAQ answer suggests to make use of AM pool Monitor.
What is this AM Pool Monitor.
    How can I use it?
    Thanks,
    Gowtam.

Enabling AM Pool allows re-use of AM objects thus saving creation of new AMs and consuming less JVM memory.
To enable AM pooling you need to set the profile FND: Application Module Pool Enabled value to "Yes".

  • T420 can't use dual DVI connected monitors

I have a T420 connected to The ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 90W (433810U* - United States), DVI port 1 connected to monitor and VGA connected to second monitor using extended desktop.  This configuration works fine but when I hook up both DVI ports to my monitors only one of the screens work and in the Intel Graphics  and Media Control Panel only shows one monitor. I have 2 different cables 1 DVI-D dual-link and 1 DVI-D single link, the dual-link works with the VGA setup but with the 2 DVI connections only the monitor with the single link cable works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • How to use tv as a monitor with HDMI adapter

with the HDMI adapter to thunderbolt plug the tv will display what is on my laptop monitor but only if I drag the screen to like 5 times its normal size. is there a way to just make it automaticly fit the tv everytime I want to use it as my monitor. I would like to be able to look at my laptop screen and also look at my tv and see the same image.  If I don't enlarge the screen the only image that is visible on the tv is the desktop image backgound.

    Hi s,
I'm not on Lion, so it could be different, but on SL, there are two choices, Mirror or Extended Desktop. Open System Preferences > Displays and see which one works better for you. You can also set the display pref so it shows in the menu bar.
Mirror means same as what you see on your built in display, including resolution.
Extended desktop allows you to use higher resolution on the TV, so I'd think that's what you'd want.

  • Using Expose on external monitor only?

    Hello All,
I have 2011 mbp that i sometimes use with an external monitor, with the monitor being my only display (closed clam-shell mode). I encountered a problem where the hot corners do not work? for some reason only the upper left corner works on the external display. if i use hot corners on my laptop screen, all the corners work? (I am not sure if this is relevant to solving this issue, but I use a wireless mouse when i use my external display.)
How do i fix this so that all the corners work as hot corners in expose on my external monitor?
    Thank-you,
    krm1897

We went through a similar discussion with the placement of the Dock with multiple displays, and found by experiment that the dock is placed on the specified edge of the main display (bottom, left, right), unless that edge was extended by an adjacent display along that edge, in which case the Dock was placed on the edge of the Extended Desktop.
I think Capt Fred is saying something similar for this as well.

  • Use imac as second monitor

I understand this can be done in some previous generations, and am just not sure whether it works in my situation.
I have a MacBook Pro (2009) and a brand new iMac 27" (2011). It seems that MBP has a mini displayport and iMac has 2 thunderbolt ports. I am curious whether I can use iMac as second monitor for my MBP. If possible, which cable should I use, a mini displayport-to-mini displayport cable from Belkin or thunderbolt-to-thunderbolt cable from Apple.

You can't except through a product such as ScreenRecycler. The iMac's Thunderbolt port won't accept video from a non-Thunderbolt source.
