Use external display only - without mirroring?

I've seen some folks using a Mac mini as a media center. I have a 12" PB and I was wondering if there's some hack for convincing the PB that there's -only- the external display (let's say 1366x768 or something similar in a wide-screen LCD) so that all video appears there and I wouldn't have the PB's internal 1024x768 even seen by the Display System Prefs.
Basically I'm trying to use the PB as if it didn't have any built-in display.
Advice and suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Barry

Well, you can use an external display and not even worry about what's on your PowerBook's screen, if you know what I mean.
Is there a reason why you want everything only shown on the external?
Again, if you have an external widescreen, you can make things appear there by choosing that as your main screen, and let your PowerBook screen be your secondary.
I just don't get, no offense, why you wouldn't want your PowerBook's LCD to function. I mean, if it was broken, then that would be a reason. And even then, your PowerBook will work with a broken screen if connected to an external where then it would definitely be forced to adhere to the resolution of the monitor.
For choosing which is your primary and which screen is your secondary when doing an extended desktop mode, go to system preferences and displays, and then there is a screen where it shows two boxes representing your two monitors. An option to drag the menu bar left or right will determine which is your main and which is your secondary. When dragging, it will "light up" with 1 or 2 on the box.

  • Using External Display Only - Gaming

    Hi,
I want to be able to connect my HP w2207h 22inch widescreen external LCD to m'y Macbook Pro running leopard to allow me to play games such as SPORE and The Sims 3. I have already set the external monitor as primary in os x but every time that I start the games that I want to play, the whole screen goes blank (both of them) and the external screen turns itself off. I then have to unplug it to get the picture to appear on the macbook again so I can exit. I still have no idea how to play these games on the external display with this problem.
I have been able to solve this problem in bootcamp however, with the function to turn off the macbookpro display and keep the external by itself. I really want to play these games in os x and on my external display.
Does anyone know how to do this or how to make it so that the macbookpro screen isn't used at all (i.e. the external display is the only one in use)?? Some third-party application?
    Cheers
    Tim

Timmy, that doesn't seem logical, buddy. If you use the MBP keyboard, I'm quite sure that it thinks u wanna use the MBP display as well. It would seem an inconvenience, to me, to have it open while using another display, anyway. I'm with the idea of using another keyboard & mouse. That's what I do.
I have a ? for ya. U mentioned that u know how to get the external display to be primary while using BootCamp XP. I have done that in the past with no problem. However, it quit working. If I close my MBP, the display turns off & XP will not allow me to do anything until I open the MBP & log back in. If I try to leave the MBP open off to the side & use the Cinema Display as primary XP laughs at me & will only open the game on the MBP display. In XP Settings, the option to uncheck the MBP display as primary is grayed out & there is no option to turn on mirroring for either display or set the Cinema Display as primary. How were u doing what ever u did to use your external display for gaming on BootCamp XP?

  • How can I use table headers only without using rows.

how can I use table headers only, without using rows and without leaving the space.
If anyone could say me how to paste the pic in this questions, I would have shown it.
The flow of view is in this way
{Table header(table on top of table)
    column header1___|| column header2__ || column header3__ ||}
<b>Here is the blank space I am getting, How to avoid this space?this space is of one table row height</b>
    {Contents column1 || Contents column2 || Contents column3 || (This is of other table below the uper table)}
I am using scroll for the content part of table only.
So I am using two tables.
    I am using NW04.

I did the possibles you explained, but couldn't get rid off the space.
    Any other solutions?
I am keeping the header static and the content columns scrollable.
I have used two tables one to display header above and the other to display only the contents.
I have put the contents table in scroll container.
And the header table in transperent container.

  • I have a 17" Macbook pro with flickering red and cyan(blue) lines across the screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem.

I purchased my Macbook (17") through a certified apple tecnition in August 2012, it was refurbished and the motherboard was completely replaced. I do a lot of photo editing, but I have been unable to do so because of the red vibrating lines that interrupt my screen. The issue disappears temporarily when I tap on the computer, and the problem does not occur when I use external display or try to screen capture the problem. I brought the computer back to the technition I purchased it from and he said that it was a problem with my fan, so I have two new fans but the issue is still occuring. He says he doesnt know whats wrong. Does anyone have any information on this issue?
Here is an image of the issue
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/67839707@N08/8884847081/

I recommend having your Mac serviced by someone competent. A force sufficient to "blow apart" the fans was clearly excessive and may have damaged the display cable, as well as any number of other problems.
Dust is properly cleaned with a vacuum, preferably one designed for computer service, and they are not cheap.
Compressed air should never be used. It just blows dust everywhere, often into places where it can no longer be removed.

  • How can FS03 be made Display only without removing Create/Change Activities

    ECC 6.0 Release 700
Our internal auditors have asked to limit access to change the Chart of Accounts. Currently our Functional team has access to do this via transactions FS00, FSS0, FSP0, etc. which needs to be removed.
The issue is that if we assign display transaction FS03 to the functional team's role, the Change and Create buttons are still enabled due to the corresponding activities in the Authorization object F_SKA1_BUK, as it seems FS00 and FS03 are essentially the same. The same holds true for FSS3 and FSP3.
Unfortunately, the functional team requires the create and change activity in F_SKA1_BUK for other transactions, so if we strip the activities for the purposes of FS03, they will lose functionality elsewhere.
The standard reports S_ALR_87012327 and S_ALR_87012328 were deemed as insufficient replacements for the information in FS00.
Is there any way to limit the functionality of FS03 to Display only without taking away the create and change activities?

While researching F_SKA1_KTP, I found that without the change or create activities in both F_SKA1_KTP and F_SKA1_BUK, the buttons gray out. The functional team is currently researching if they need change/create in F_SKA1_KTP, as I sent them a list of transactions they have for which it is required.
I tried to remove S_TCODE FS00, but when I ran FS03 it gave me a "not authorized for FS00" message and did not display the screens. I removed the dependency via SE97, but then FS03 essentially became FS00 and I was back at square one.
Thank you both for your suggestions.

  • S430 - deactive nvidia GPU and still use external displays?

    Hi,
I'm interessted in buying an Edge S430. Is it possible to deactive the dedicated nvidia gpu in the bios?
Furthermore, is the intel GPU cabable of using external displays?
    Thank you.
    Best,

S430 with Nvidia discrete gpu can be disabled in the BIOS by selecting the integrated GPU option.
I think the DP still work, but not sure whether the Thinkpad HDMI do too.

  • Using External Display WITHOUT mirroring or extended desktop

I asked this question about a month ago and it seems to have been deleted for some reason.
I have a broken screen on my Intel iMac G5 for reasons I don't wanna get into here, but trust me, it's not covered under the warranty. I have a great Sony LCD HD Monitor plugged in by VGA and mirroring displays. I have noticed that the computer is a LOT slower since connecting the alternate display, and I think it's because processing the smae information on both displays at once is using up too much system resources. I DON'T want an extended desktop either, since the iMac screen is broken.
Is there a way to turn off the iMac screen completely and ONLY use the external monitor WITHOUT mirroring or extended desktop?
If not, how can I improve my machine's performance while mirroring displays? Is more RAM the answer?

    Hello howoriginal
    Let me see
    1) OK sounds like the Sony is working for you in mirroring.
    2) Which iMac do you have Intel or G-5? (Intel's are not G-5s)
    3) Don't think you'll be able to turn off the iMac display. (you know I want to ask)
    4) Mirroring should not realy affect your performance. Keeping everything "gathered" up to Sony display might help you from misplacing windows and folders.
    5) If it's an early Intel Core Duo with 512MB then "yes" more ram to 1, 1.5 or 2GB will boost your performance.
    6) Other thing to help performance are OnyX maintenance and quitting App's from menu, not just closing App's with red button that you are not using.
That's all I have for now!

  • Use external display for movies only

    Hi,
I have a 22" external display which I like to use for watching DVDs only. Mirroring is not an option for me as this limits the display to a lower resolution. How can I configure my Mac so that whenever I insert a DVD (or start FrontRow) this will come up on the external display and all the rest remains on the internal display?
When I put my MacBook to sleep and wake it up with my remote it works. However the internal display remains switched off and as the external diisplay is not right beside my Mac it makes me kind of blind.
    Any ideas?
    THANKS

    hey there KinoViel,
the 1st time i put a DVD into my iMac i moved the DVD player window from it to my TV. since it is a mostly "permanent" connection every time i put in a DVD & select that input on my TV to watch it, that is where the DVD window shows up(on my TV). the Apple Remote only works w/ the Mac so you can just aim the remote @ the MacBook to use Front Row. my iMac lives next to my seating position so i don't know the keyboard commands for Front Row.... sorry. try a search for Front Row keyboard shortcuts. & i think there's a list of keyboard shortcuts in Finder Help.
when i was using my MacBook w/ my big TV because it was taken in & out of my entertainment system, i had to go through the previously outlined steps every time because the Mac had to find & ID the TV. sometimes i use my MacBook w/ my BR TV & when i connect it, i have to do the steps for the Mac to find & ID the TV.
don't be aplogize for having a PC @ work lots of folks do, be thankful/happy you can come home to the joy your Mac brings you. i'm fortunate that i am self-employed & my Macs do double duty 'cause i do some work @ home, so they're for work & play.
    good luck.

  • Is there a way to use a non-apple external display (monitor) without having my macbook air plugged in?

Just got a 27'' AOC monitor that I'm using with my Macbook Air (purchased in 2013). It's working great but as soon as I unplug the power adapter from my laptop the monitor goes black and says 'no signal'. I've been reading online that you need to have the power adapter plugged in to use an external monitor - my questions are: 1) does that harm the laptop's batter? if so, 2) is there a workaround? if there is no workaround, 3) does an Apple monitor also require that a laptop be plugged in for the external display to continue functioning while the laptop is in clamshell mode (closed lid)?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Thanks, Matt. In my case, the monitor definitely shuts off when I unplug the power from my laptop in clamshell mode. If the lid is open, however, the monitor continues to function even without the power adapter plugged into my laptop. Ideally, I'd like to have the lid closed on my laptop and be able to use the external monitor without having the power plugged into my laptop. That's what doesn't seem to work - if your does, please let me know if you have any pointers.
    Thanks again!

  • External display only with lid open?

I feel like I must be missing something really obvious, so I apologize in advance, but I'm trying to use my external display (23" cinema display) without using the MBP display yet still keeping the lid open (mainly for the isight camera).
The first time I plugged the cinema display into the MBP it worked that way, but after I put it to sleep and then woke it up, both displays are on and I can't figure out how to turn off the MBP display without closing the lid.
I see no option for it in System Preferences > Display and the Apple key+F7 only toggles between mirrored and extended desktop modes.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    TIA!
    15.4" MacBook Pro 2.16ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Try this:
Plug in your external monitor. Once the Mac recognizes it and you see your desktop on the external display, close the MacBook's lid. Once both displays turn off and the sleep light starts to pulse, wake up your Mac by either clicking a button on an external mouse, or pushing the play button on your Apple remote. The external display should come on. When it does, you can open the MacBook lid and its display will stay off.

  • How to change external display resolution WITHOUT clicking "CONFIRM"?

I have a somewhat unusual situation. My MacBook laptop is actually now a ModBook (a pen-tablet computer), and as such I no longer have a trackpad attached to it. All of my inputs are via the stylus, tapping directly on the built-in display.
This works perfectly fine, except when I need to give presentations on an LCD projector (which is quite often lately). I like to use the projector as an external monitor, so that I can run the Keynote presentation on it while using my laptop screen as the presenter's display, with the upcoming slide, etc. If the projector doesn't give me an ideal native display option (sometimes, the aspect ratio for the  3 or 4 resolutions available in the Displays drop-down in the menubar turn out to be stretched or squeezed), then I, naturally, have to open the Display System Preferences and try out different resolutions.
The problem is, since my stylus only interacts by clicking directly on the built-in-display, I have no way of moving the cursor over to the external display when the dialog box with the "Click here to confirm change/You have 15 seconds..." message appears. So I can never click it ... so I can never confirm the new settings.
The workarounds I've used so far are:
    - Mirror displays (not ideal, as I need the presenter preview of the next slide)
    - borrow a mouse from someone (usually from a Windows desktop, frankly) and plug that in to briefly mouse over and click the confirm button
I'd love to find a software workaround that allows me to NOT mirror displays and also doesn't require me to carry around a mouse all the time (my laptop bag is already overstuffed...).
    Thanks.

  • External Display Blurry when Mirrored

I have a 20" viewsonic VX2035 that is hooked up to my gaming rig. If I use it with my MBP and choose the mirror displays setting, when the Viewsonic is at its proper resolution (1680x1050) everything looks blurry. When at its correct resolution and not mirrored it looks normal. And it looks normal but slightly distorted if mirrored and at the 1440x900.
    Any ideas?

I've found exactly the same thing.
In "mirror mode", the external display (for me a 23" cinemadisplay HD) uses the macbookpro's internal screen's resolution (though it does uprez it), even though on screen preferences it may be set much higher (1920x1200 on mine). Hence the fuzziness.
In "dual display" mode, and in lid-closed mode (where the external display is the only one on), it works perfectly.
Not sure why this is. If anyone has a fix, please post.

  • Magic Mouse Disconnecting When Closing MacBook Pro Using External Display

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I am trying to use it in sleep mode with an Apple wireless keyboard and a Magic Mouse. Everything appears to be connected fine. When I close the lid on my MacBook, I click my mouse and the external display comes on for a few seconds, then it cuts out and doesn't come back. I have the Bluetooth device can wake the computer up from sleep checked. When I have the MacBook open, the external display works fine. I only lose the external display a few seconds after I close the lid on my MacBook Pro.
I have made the Magic Mouse and keyboard favorites and it didn't help.
Does anyone have any idea? I am running 10.6.8.
    Thanks

GaryKing, can you review how you reset the .plist files for both the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse?
I had nothing but good things to say about the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, until I hooked up my 22' Samsung display to my MBP. Power shouldn't be an issue because it's being plugged into the outlet and the external monitor isn't taking power from the MBP. However, my keyboard will keep popping up with the notice "Connection Lost" every 5 or so minutes. Even now, I'm already on the next paragraph but the letters are slowly coming up one by one - it's not registering as fast.
The mouse experienced the same issue if I'm downloading a lot of files, it will lag behind to the point where I'll drag the mouse to where I want it to be, then a few seconds later it'll pop up where it should, that's how bad the lag is. I thought perhaps restarting the computer will do, but no, and also everything is up-to-date so there are no updates to worry about.
GaryKing, if you can go over how you reset the .plist files, that would be much appreciated. By the way, it's past a week since your post, how have the Bluetooth devices been working? Did the reset solve the lag issue permanently, or was is just a temporary fix?

  • External Display only with VGA Adapter working

Hello, I'm german so sorry for my bad english
After updating to Leopard 10.5.2 and installation of the Leopard Graphic Update, my external Display isn't working with DVI anymore. If I plug it in, my desktop flashes and I also get the monitor information tab of my external Display (Name and Settings correct). But the Screen stays black as in power saving mode. If I use the DVI -> VGA Adapter, everything works fine...
Could that Problem be realted to the new Updates?
I've also checked every hint of that Forum (PRAM reset, deleting Preference Files, trying to boot with closed MBP, ...), nothing worked for me. The Problem also occurs in Bootcamp! The external Display is recognized fine, but will not display any image, only if I use the Adapter.

According to Apple support, it is "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid, even if you want to use only your external display. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to a 27" cinema display
    - the waste of energy and inefficient use of graphics processing power in needlessly running two active screens (ie if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy)
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP hotter than it needs to be.
If you would like to have the previous behaviour restored, please consider lobbying Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode. Options available to Apple include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.
    Feedback should be submitted here:
