Use filename as track / song name

Is there an easy way to change each track (song) name in iTunes to the actual file name? I would prefer not to do it manualy or edit the metadata of the actual file. I saw some old scripts that claim to do this on OSX ( here: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=arttrackfilename ) but none for windows.

Hello again. I have a script called TagfromFilename that can be used to construct tag data from the filename and path although it is expecting the files to be in the format <Artist>\<Album>\## <Track>.<Ext>.  The script could be tweaked if you have set out the information differently. With the exception of .wav files howver, any updates to the iTunes version of the track data will be refelected in the tags.

  • Changing Track/Song Name on Archive File - How to?

I have about 50 songs named "Track #" that I want to rename including new Artist and Album information.
I got how to do this in iTunes (Get Info on the Name and enter Info), but I want to change the original file on the library outside of iTunes.
MY QUESTION, does editing the Info in iTunes change the original file (or how to I change the original file so it includes the new information?)?

I'm assuming you want to change the original file info to avoid confusion...
I think it depends on whether the other location allows you to change info. I think you would probably also be prompted if you shouldn't.
After you edit info in iTunes, say you add a song from your outside library that's already on iTunes...it won't be listed in the iTunes library as a duplicate, and doesn't change any info you've already edited in iTunes.
Editing info in iTunes hasn't changed the original file name in its other locations as far as I've seen.
You can see the original file name and location like this:
    1. right-click the song
    2. choose "Get Info"
    3. click on the "Summary" tab
Look at the bottom where it says "Where".
That helped me a whole lot when I had duplicate songs in the outside library and the files had names like "track 02".

  • Itunes renamed filename as tracks?

Apple itunes cannot use filename to import songs, it uses tracks instead?
The field <file name>, for all my mp3 is apparently NOT used by iTunes, for sorting. As a conclusion my library is totally messed up. I need some help...
    Here the details:
I have organized my audiobooks for years, in this way:
    file-name: D01 T01.mp3 then D01 T02 then ....then Dn Tm.
    No id3 tag.
D01 T01.mp3 means the first track on Disc 01
    D05 T14 means the 14th track on Disc 05
Usually audio books contain from 1 to 5 or 6 CDs
Across the years, i ripped all my mp3 with the same structure.
I put album info only on the folder name. For example, my last audio-books set was from Brian Tracy.
For the folder name I chose "Brian Tracy - Psychology of Selling"
    The content includes
    file-name: D01 T01.mp3 up to D05 T10.mp3
The software I used (Media Monkey) also filled automatically these fields:
title: track 01 up to track 10 for disco 01, then again track 01 to track 10 for disc 02, etc.
I have started to use iTunes since November. But every time I try to import I see that:
    - file names are TOTALLY ignored
    - I end up having 4 (FOUR) mp3 files called track 01, then another 4 (FOUR) MP3 files called track 02...and so on until track 10...a completely mess!
Since <file name> field (D01 T01.mp3) is apparently NOT used by iTunes, the conclusion is that my library is totally messed up.
Additionally iTunes imports the folder WITHOUT Looking at folder name, so all folders, in iTunes, show as "unknown artist , unknown album". This second issue is solved by me by manually editing the folder name and artist name (using "getinfo" function)
    Question:
can somebody explain to me how can I force iTunes to import and sort my file using the FILENAME field (D01 T01.mp3) ? Instead of title field (track 01) ?
    Any help is heartily appreciated!

First do you have the original files in their original folders? If iTunes has already swallowed them up and rearranged them there's not much I can suggest. Regular music would be susceptible to MusicBrainz Picard Tagger but that is unlikely to be the case in this instance. If you still have them in their original folder layout stored outside the iTunes Media folder then turn off *Copy to iTunes Media folder when adding to library* (Edit > Preferences > Advanced) so that iTunes points to the original files rather than copies it creates based on the partial information. It's proably also wise to turn off *Keep the iTunes Media folder organised* until you are cetain that iTunes has enough information to move all your files to sensible places when it tries to organise them.
Can I confirm that each album is in a folder of the form *<Artist|Author> - <Album Title|Book Title>* and each file is in the form *D## T## <Title>.<ext>* ? If so then using the pattern *<Artist> - <Album>\D<Disc#> T<Track#> <Title>* with MediaMonkey's Auto-Tag From Filename feature should work. After updating the tags you'd either need to remove & reimport the tracks or use my UpdateTagInfo script. Alternatively I could create a special version of the TagFromFilename script to do both jobs in one...

  • Bug: iTunes Music Library Not Showing Song Name Category

As the title says: the iTunes Music library does not the track/song name category.
I realized this after clicking "Auto Size All Columns" after a fresh install of iTunes. The track/song name disappears from the current view, and isn't an option when right-clicking the categories.

  • Full song name

I have a few albums by Sufjan Stevens. If you are familiar with his albums, you will understand that I cannot enter some of the full song names. Is there a mod or other iTunes device that I may use to input full song names and exceed the character quota?

regardless of the music status or not, they still share the same core music player as the XpressMusic line. so the scrolling of the file names should work but it does not. although drastic, a Restore to factory settings may be in order here, because as far as i know, there are no options for this scrolling within the phone menu. if you do decide to proceeed with a Restore, remember to backup all your data first as per proper precautions.
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • I used to be able to change track & artist names & other song info in "View" / "Info"; can no longer do

I used to be able to change track & artist names & other song info in "View" / "Info" (or Command I) but can no longer do. The info shows up "greyed". It seems to be on tracks from CDs I imported or downloaded from sources several years ago (pre Gracenotes).
Any suggestions on how to fix?
    Thanks!

I'm having a similar issue. I just downloaded new songs and I can't edit the information or artwork because they are all greyed out. I didn't have that problem until I upgraded to iTunes 11!

  • Importing song/artist names to iTunes using the file or folder names

    hello,
a friend of mine put all of his tracks onto a CD and gave me the CD to import to my library.
When I did this I noticed a convenient behavior which I have not been able to reproduce. iTunes automatically ID'ed both the song and artist name and separated them in iTunes to their corresponding columns.
when i do this, both artist and song name are lumped together into the song name column and i have to separate and cut and paste them out.
My friend put the albums in folders then a sub folder for artists and then inside that folder there were the song files.
How did he do it? I think it has something to do with using dashes or forward slashes or folders in the song file names, but I'm not sure how it works.

    Hello ,
    For iTunes :
Created a copy of the files in iTunes folder .
But before you delete the files from the desktop ,
    I suggest you check .
Finder > music > iTunes > iTunes Media
    For iPhoto :
I do not use this software so I do not know but
I can assume it's the same thing as iTunes .

  • I can no longer play my music from iTunes on my computer.  i get the error prompt: The song (name) could not be used because the original file could not be found.  What do I do?

not sure what to add other than to repeat myself.  ive lost ability to play music from my iTunes library on my computer.  Everything is there but i get an error message that says '"The song (name) could not be found.  Would you like to locate it?   Then it gives me the option to locate or cancel.  i can't do that for 3800 songs!!  i have all my music in separate folders by album and all individual selections in an external hard drive.  i can play from there but thats clicking on one number at a time.  i lost my capability in the process of Microsoft correcting a problem with my outlook program.  Why, i haven't a clue.   help!!

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

I am receiving this error when syncing my ipod: iTunes could not copy "song name" to the iPod "name" because an unknown error occurred (-50).  I am using iTunes version 10.6.3.25. Why?

Right click the filename that won't download and selsct 'Get Info'. Look at the file path, does it have a //?// in it? That is a problem with Amazon downloads that prevent iTunes from finding the file. Use 'Add Folder' to add the album to your library and try syncing it again

  • How do I give individual tracks a song name/artist name on a compilation CD?

I have been uploading compilation CDs to my iTunes library onto my MacBook Pro and while I can give the CD an album name, genre, etc., through 'CD Info' while the CD is uploading, I am unable to give each track a song name and artist. When I tried doing this via 'CD info' every track was given the same song name and artist!  It is a CD of various artists/tracks. Any advice welcome.

    Hello TooSweet1,
It sounds like you have imported an audio disk to your iTunes library that is a compilation of various artists but the artist and other info are the same for all tracks and you would like to customize the information on a track by track basis. You can do this with the info window.
Information about each item in your library is stored in the item’s Info window. To open the Info window, select the item and then choose File > Get Info.

  • Song names imported as "artist - track name" instead of "track name"

When I add a folder to my library (a folder which contains MP3 files which all contain complete ID3 tags), about 50% of the song names get imported as "artist - track name" instead of just "track name". If I click on any track which was imported like this, and right-click and select "get info", the track name shows up correctly in the dialog box, and it suddenly fixes the display on the listing (without me doing anything).
I could fix each song by clicking "get info", but I would have to do this for all my songs, which would take far too long. Is there any way to get iTunes to import these track names correctly? Or is there a way to refresh the listing, and have iTunes re-read the ID3 tags on the MP3 files?
      Windows XP Pro

To get the track names etc., when importing a CD, you have to be connected to the Internet.
    This article explains why.
To get the info later, select all tracks (with the generic track names) of an album and choose 'Get CD Track Names' from the Advanced menu in the menubar.
Very often the correct information will show up.
    Hope this helps.

I tried to play my iTunes and suddenly get an error message that says "The song (name) could not be used because the original file could not be found.  Would you like to locate it now?"  It happens on each tune I select and a "?" appears beside the song.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?

    I was not complete clear.
Since you never changed the settings in the advanced section of iTunes preferecnes, you have to chech that your music is really in the location setted in the folders reported in the advanced section.  If not you have 2 ways: reset the position of this folders or in the actual disk organisation or in the pointing on the preferences.
If you press the reset button you just give to itunes its default setting as for the position of the music files: probably this will be a good choice if you have never changed any default preference.
But before I would check the folders and see if the songs are really there
In my iTune I have this, and I believe it is the default.

  • I can no longer change my song names like i used to. i use to be able to right click and go to "get info" and then change the song name, artist and album, now i can't is there any other way to change the songs name and info

When I get songs and put them on my itunes accout on my computer I used to be able to rename them right clicking, going to "get info" and then renaming everything I wanted like song name, album and artwork. I also use to be able to click on the song then click and hold on it and be able to rename it. But all the songs I have gotten after the last update have not been able to be renamed in any of the old ways I use to be able to. Is there any other way to rename songs because I know I can't undo updates and that seems to be whats causing it.
