Use full potential of DVD (space/encoding) ?????

I have a 90 minute anamorphic DV video that's roughly 18gb in size. I imported it in to iDVD with out a problem. Threw together some menus and I was done. I had the preferences set to use "Professional Encoding" which I could only assume meant it was the best quality. Using that setting I got around a 3GB DVD. When I popped in the DVD burned with the "Professional" setting, the DVD was VERY pixelated (especially around edges and text but everywhere else as well) and the quality of the original video is nothing less than stellar so there is no reason I should be getting this quality. What I want to do is burn it to a dual layer DVD and use the DVDs full potential (or at least encode it at the max of 8 or 9 mbps which is the DVD standard. Is there anything I can do to have it try and use most of the space for a better encode? Can I encode it using another program to get a satisfying end product and import it into iDVD and NOT have it encode it??
Thanks in advance.

There is a maximum playback bit-rate that set top DVD players can support. 60 minutes on a single-layer disc with 'Best Performance' is VERY close to the limit. If you are using a double-layer disc, 120 minutes at 'Best Performance' would be very close to the bit-rate limit.
On a single-layer disc, 90 minutes at 'Professional Quality' (what a misleading name, by the way) will have lower playback quality than 60 minutes at 'Best Quality'.
I want to do is burn it to a dual layer DVD and use the DVDs full potential (or at least encode it at the max of 8 or 9 mbps which is the DVD standard.
It can't be done because of the playback bit-rate limit. 'Professional Quality' is good when you are trying to put more than 60 minutes on a single-layer disc or more than 120 minutes on a double-layer disc. 'Professional Quality' uses two passes. The first pass looks at your content to decide where the high detail/movement is and where parts of low detail/movement are. The second pass actually encodes your content using something close to the 'Best Performance' bit-rate where it found high detail/movement and a lower bit-rate where the low detail/movement was.

  • Can't install Tiger using full retail disk(DVD)

I have a system that should support Tiger and I have a retail Install Disk(black face w/ big X). After inserting the disk, clicking "install", giving appropriate password, then clicking "restart", I can't get past the grey window with Apple Logo. Trying to start using "C" key doesn't work nor does selecting the Install Disk after using Option Key during Start-Up. What's the matter with my machine or software? It's a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver) running OS X 10.2.8. It's a 933 Mhz PowerPC and has 768 mb of RAM. Boot Rom info is 4.3.3f2, Darwin Kernel Ves. 6.8. Do I need a firmware update and ,if so, how can I get it?

Is there a minimum Mac OS for the 107D ? OSX 10.4 should be OK but I do remember OSX 10.4.6 being a minimum requirement for a lot of the Pioneer drives when I looked to upgrade years ago. This was enough to put me off upgrading.
For OS Boot capability, the drive needs to be Apple Supported. While almost any DVD drive will work in the Mac, only a few can be used to boot it. ie. Under Disc Burning in the ASP, does it not need to show as "Apple Supported" rather than just "Yes".
[This link|http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg25218.html] indicates it boots OS9 so I would think it would also boot OSX. Aren't many early generation G4 Superdrives basically Pioneer drives under a different label?
Pioneer usually doesn't supply firmware updates for Apple computers. There are instructions on how to use the PC updaters to install on Macs with DVRFlash but it's moot if it is really necessary.

  • 30 second video used a lot of DVD space

I burned a 30 second shot onto a DVD and it looks like it took up about 20% of the DVD. Why did it take so much space for such a small clip? How would I fit a 90 minute film on even a DVD-9 double layer disk?

30 seconds of 8k for stereo IMAX is a danged big file.

  • Dvds made with encore cs5 not using full 4.65gb as cs4 did

The majority of my video work consists of burning DVDs of event videos that are longer than two hours. I edit the video, dynamic link over to Premiere, add a second time line with a 10 second logo video and render the DVD. And since the begining of time with CS3, these DVD images always come out to be 4.65/4.66 gb (according to OS X). Now, with CS5, changing absolutely nothing--exact same workflow--Encore is only using 4.21 gb of space. The disc info section of the build pane lists around 450mb of free space (on the particular project I'm looking at right now).
This is a significant amount of wasted space and is unacceptable. Why is this happening?

I was finally able to talk to someone from Adobe and they tell me that this is the expected behavior, that supposedly not all DVDs are manufactured at the correct size and this extra space is to prevent problems. Should that even be true (aren't DVD's a standard?? If it says there's 4.7gb on it doesn't than mean there's 4.7gb??) this is a STUPID decision for the following reasons:
    * It doesn't show this 500mb extra space until after you render your items. Before that time, it shows all the disc space being used--1 or 2 megs free and no more
    * If this is necessary then make the default disc image size 4.2gb and add it to the drop-down list of sizes. Then I can pick 4.7 if I want it.
    * It doesn't even always leave 500mb. Sometimes, completely unexplicably--I'd say 10% of the time, it uses the full amount of space...like it's done since Encore v1.0. So if I manually change the disc size to 5.2 in order to get the right size image, I sometimes find that nope, Encore isn't drunk today, and I now have a 5.2gb disc image and have to start over.
It seems like every time I update my software w/ the promise of things speeding up my workflow (and other things in CS5 have), something like this pops up to F it all up and I resign myself to thinking well, I guess Adobe will fix this one day...and call it CS6 and charge me another $700 for it.

  • Encore not using full available disc space

So. I frequently burn DVDs with Encore with timelines that are 2 hours or longer. Beginning in CS5, Encore would start only using up 4.2GB of space even though the size of my disc image was 4.7GB. Before the material is rendered, Encore says it's using all 4.7GB, with a few MB left over. But once it's done rendering, sometimes there's an extra 500 MB unused. It doesn't always happen but usually does. If I click around in Encore a bit, the disc info panel updates to show all the extra unused space.
This was not the case in any previous version of Encore. Tech support people tried to tell me this was a feature, that Encore was now including 10% of buffer space. What an idiotic feature, but ok, whatever.
So I started trying to fool Encore by setting the disc size to 5.2 GB. And most of the time I'd come out w/ an image using all the available space on the DVD. Except, that doesn't always work. Right now I have a project that's 1 hour 45 minutes. When I render a disc of 5.2 GB size, that's exactly how much space the disc image takes up. Ok, so I re-render at 4.7 GB. Nope, it's gonna do 4.22 GB. WTF??? And then sometimes, for no clear reason at all, Encore will make a 4.7 GB image without me changing a thing.
If this was really a feature, it's not implemented consistently, and then why tell me my disc is using 4.7 GB before rendering if Encore has no intention of using that much space.
I brought this problem up back when CS5 came out--I talked to senior-level support people about it--and can't believe that two versions later it hasn't been fixed. It's wasting incredible amounts of my time.
The cycle hasn't ended for as long as I've been buying Creative Suite...every version, lots of my long-standing frustrations are fixed, but Adobe manages to screw up one big thing. And I give in and pay for the next version in hopes that it gets fixed...but something else then gets screwed up. Another several hundred dollars later and now I guess I have to wait for CS7 to maybe have this work correctly.

  • Is there any way to get around having to use iDVD to burn DVD?

Is there any way to get around having to use iDVD to export FCE to DVD?
I've been trying to burn a FCE2 sequence to DVD. A friend of mine told me all I had to do was put a blank DVD in, click on the icon on the desk top, export the sequence to Quicktime and drag the QT sequennce into the DVD icon and click burn.
Well something happened! But there's nothing on the DVD!! What am I doing wrong? I loathe iDVD. i don't want to author. I just want to burn the project on a DVD. Please advise. Thanks.

If you export a sequence at full resolution to can burn it onto a DVD as a data DVD, but this is for transportation purposes only. At full resolution the DVD, especially as it fills up, will not have sufficient throughput to sustain good playback of the material. That's why the material is encoded into MPEG-2 for DVD authoring. If you want to make a DVD for set-top playback it has to be authored to include the DVD format structure. There is no way around that. If you don't like iDVD, take a look at Final Cut Studio, you might prefer DVD Studio Pro. Or you might what to look at Roxio's Toast. It has basic authoring capabilities. Personally I don't think direct playback hardware solutions (except for seriously expensive ones) produce acceptable quality, but that's just me.

  • I've bought an Apple USB drive, can I use this to load DVD's onto my computer so I only need to take the laptop on holiday with me rather than the USB drive and dvd's?

I've bought one of the Apple USB Superdrives thinking I could use it to load DVD's and save them onto my macbook pro, can anyone confirm if I can or can't do this?
If I can how do I do it?

Ok so any chance you could explain to me exactly what I need to do as I am absolutely clueless! I have a pile of DVD's, the USB superdrive and I've just downloaded the Handbrake software. When I put the DVD into the superdrive it starts playing, how do I get the series onto my computer?
If you haven't done this before, there are a few things you need to know. Sorry to say that this is not yet a simple, straightforward process like it is for music CDs. It helps to be a little geeky. You will need to make some choice about file format and file size if there is any chance that the imported discs will take up more space than you have available on your hard drive. If you are willing to learn, you should read the Handbrake User Guide and other articles on the Web about importing DVDs.
If you think this is starting to look complicated and you don't have time to figure it out before the trip, it might be easier to just bring the discs.
I have found that Handbrake can't import every disc. I think Mac DVD Ripper Pro is a much easier program to use, and it will import almost any DVD pretty reliably, but it costs money. For me it is worth it.
No matter which way you do it, it is going to take a lot of time to import a bunch of discs. It is going to take a lot more time than importing music CDs.

  • HT5891 Is there a way to remove the menu bar from a secondary display while still using the "Displays have separate spaces" mode?

Is there a way to remove the menu bar from a secondary display while still using the very useful "Displays have separate spaces" mode?
The reason I ask is that most full-screen video playback in most applications, from iTunes to Flash/Silverlight plugins do not take up the full screen, instead leaving space for the menu bar (in the case of iTunes) or leaving the menu bar present on top of the video (for fullscreen Flash/Silverlight videos).
This is annoying for several reasons ranging from the obvious distraction factor to the fact that 1080p video is not played back at native resolution on a 1080p display.
If there is no way to disable this functionality while maintaining separate spaces, I would (humbly) suggest that a future update to Mavericks allow non-Lion-style* full-screen apps to take over the entire display.
*Lion-style full-screen apps are those that animate into a full-screen mode when the opposing-arrows full-screen button in the upper-right-hand corner of the window is pressed.

No. Turning that off reverts to the old display setup. You have one desktop spanned across all displays. The menu bar appears on the primary display only.

  • I have both a simultaneous dual band and a regular dual band airport extreme on an extended network will the 5ghz work at its full potential if its the one that is extending the network?

I have a A1143 model Airport extreme with dual band capabilities but not simultaneous, i'd like that to run on the 2.4ghz band, while i have a A1408 model airport extreme as the "extender" but i want to make sure that even though im running the 2.4 and the newer model is extendeding it, my simulataneous dual band will still work to its full potential (ie: 300mbs i think is the max for the 5ghz)..?
notes: no i can't use the newer model as the primary and the older model as the extender.

I am assuming that your simultaneously dual-band Extreme is using the same Network Name for both radios. If that is the case, and depending on the distance between AirPorts, the extending Extreme is most likely just extending the 2.4 GHz radio. That would leave the 5 GHz wireless network basically "untouched."

    Maybe.
I've had some situations where a non-Apple DVD drive would not do a particular job.  When I tried the same project with the Apple SuperDrive everything worked perfectly.
This is an area where I would not try to save money.

I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.0 using a drop in DVD and now I can't log in...
This was on a G5 imac. I tried booting to the DVD and resetting the password but this did not help.
I did see the 2 user accounts still there when I reset the password so that gives me hope that my data is all there intact.
I need help getting past this login screen PLEASE!
The login name is blank and I've tried everything to get past it.
I heard from a tech that there was a problem when upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.5.0 instead of the 10.5.3 or whatever, and it was a known issue when using the 10.5.0 disc to upgrade and he said that there was information on apple's site on what to do when this happens but I have not come accross this info as of yet.
I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me.
    Thanks!!!

OK I finally got passed the above problem by just trying to type it in over and over and over and it finally took!
It seems as though I may have typed it wrong or misspelled something but I could swear I put it in the same way everytime!
    NOW...
when I type : passwd username
replacing username with the short name it says
    paddwd: Unknown user name 'username'
someone told me that possibly the home folder is still there and intact but the login may have gotten trashed and that i may need to recreate the user login. Does that sound like a possibility?
