Use G5 SATA HD with an Intel MacPro

I have 2 internal hard drives from my G5 dual 2.5 and they are a SATA configuration.
I am about to purchase the latest model Macpro intel machine - can I connect those hard drives to my intel-based new mac?

Hi p,
You're posting in the MacBookPro forum, while asking questions about the MacPro. You'd be better served by posting in the MacPro forum. Good luck. (I believe the answer to your question is "yes" as both are SATA setups, as long as the G5 HDs are not used as boot drives.)

  • X230: SATA errors with 180GB Intel 520 SSD under heavy write load

    Hi,
We spent a couple of days cornering what appears to be an issue with the Intel 520 SSD drives in Lenovo x230 laptops. It was first showing up on a clean Debian installation, while installing a guest operating system into a VM. Looking around on forums, there appears to be some people having issues with database workloads too. So I decided to create a small user-space program to repoduce the problem. IMPORTANT: Before you try it, be ready for a system crash requiring a cold reboot.. It's available at:
    git://git.efficios.com/test-ssd.git
    direct link to .c file:
    https://git.efficios.com/?p=test-ssd.git;a=blob;f=test-ssd-write.c;hb=refs/heads/master
This program simply performs random-access-writes of 4Kb into a single file.
Executive summary of our findings (the details are in the test-ssd-write.c header in the git repo):
    - We reproduced this issue on 4 x230 machines (all our x230 have 180GB Intel drives, and they are all affected),
    - We took a SSD from one of the machines, moved it into an x200, and the problem still occurs,
    - The problem seems to occur independently of the filesystem (reproduced on ext3 and ext4),
    - Problem reproduced by test-ssd-write.c (git tree above): After less than 5 minutes of the heavy write workload, we get SATA errors and we need to cold reboot the machine to access the drive again. Example usage (don't forget to prepare for a computer freeze):
      ./test-ssd-write somefileondisk 209715200 1234 -z
(see options by just running ./test-ssd-write)
The problem occurs with drive model SSDSC2BW180A3L, with both firmwares LE1i and LF1i (those are Lenovo firmwares). We could reproduce the issue on 3.2 (Debian), 3.5 (Debian), 3.7.9 (Arch) distribution kernels. We could reproduce it with x230 BIOS G2ET90WW (2.50) 2012-20-12 and G2ET86WW (2.06) 2012-11-13, but since it can be reproduced on a x200 too, it does not appear to be a BIOS issue.
We tried the program on a range of other SSD drives, one of those including the same SandForce 2281 controller (details within test-ssd-write.c header). So our current guess is that the Lenovo firmware on the SSD might be part of the problem, but it might be good if we could to confirm that Intel's firmwares work fine.
Thoughts, ideas, hints about who to contact on this issue would be very much welcome,
    Thanks,
    Mathieu

I can confirm the exact same problem with Debian and Ubuntu.
I can reproduce it easily on Debian by installing a VM.
On Ubuntu it is harder to reproduce but I already hit this problem when installing updates (dpkg does a lot of sync/fdatasync just like your test program).
I think the difference between the 2 distros that explain why it is easier to reproduce on one is the default I/O scheduler (cfq for Debian and deadline for Ubuntu).
Lenovo already completely replaced my laptop (X230 with SSDSC2BW180A3L) and I still have this problem.
    We need a firmware fix.
    Thanks !

  • Using External Boot Drive with New Intel Mac Mini

I have a 1st Gen MacMini and use an external 7200 RPM Lacie drive as the system boot drive along with all the applications.
If I were to purchase a new Intel Mac Mini, is it possible to use the current external drive as the system drive or is there some conversion steps that would be necessary ?
    Thank you.

You can use the hardware, but will have to repartition and reinstall the OS from the disk shipped with the new Mac Mini.

If you create a disk image of the Lacie on your Mini, you can later use setup assistant to restore users and applications from that image.

  • Using external isight camera with imac intel

is there a procedure to use my 'old' portable isight camera with my new imac intel?

i did some tests and here's how is is done:
plug in the FW external isight camera; open SKYPE and prior to calling on SKYPE; go to preferences.; go to 'video' and there NOW two selections 'built-in isight' and 'isight'; select 'isight' and that will be the camera you will using once you make the SKYPE call; HOWEVER if you want to switch back to the 'built-in isight' you have to 'hang up'; go back to preferences and select 'built-in isight' and re-make the call. BTW Apple care in the far far east was next to no help. maybe apple care will read this post and then THEY TOO will have the answer.

  • Cracks with matrix reverb on intel macpro

I use matrix reverb on G4 and G5 without problem. since i am on intel macpro, there are crackles with the matrix reverb.
Do you have an idea ?

    Hi,
I never use that plugin,I use Logic's Space Designer...
Maybe Apple knows why it crackles on an Intel machine, ask them please...

  • Right, MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(Built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G not working, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III.

My MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G are not working together, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III and in my MacBook Pro it does not work.
Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please.

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.

  • Can I transfer docs between a MacBook with a Intel processor and a iMac with a PowerPC processor by using a usb cord?

Can I transfer docs/folders between a MacBook with a Intel processor and a iMAC with a PowerPC processor using a usb cord? Or by loading from the MacBook to a external drive and then to the Imac.

You need to use an external drive, FireWire cable, Ethernet cable, or wireless connection.

Even though you have 16gb of ram installed, 32 bit Windows can only use 4gb of it so 12gb is wasted.  This is the reason you are getting not enough memory errors and is a known problem with Lightroom an 32 bit Windows during export.   You need to change to 64 bit Windows.

Unfortnately you cannot. Thunderbolt is an onboard chip that will require an updated Mac Pro. It is not a graphics card upgrade, but a full logicboard upgrade.
Apple has not updated the Mac Pro in 580 days - as of this post. Hopefully one is right around the corner...but I've been hoping for that for over a year.

I have an iMac 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I'd like to Lion, in order to use iCloud, but the specs indicate I don't have enough memory. How much memory can I add? And will this upgrade allow me to install Lion?

I believe your model iMac can address 3 GB RAM; the minimum for Lion is 2 GB - however, that is an absolute minimum for very light use. You would be much happier with a minimum of 4 GB.

(You can install 4 GB, but it will only be able to address about 3.1 - 3.2 GB)

  • I have a newer MacBook Pro with an AMD processor.  It is my understanding that Parallels can only be used on Mac's with Intel Processors.  Is that true and if so does anyone have recommendations about how to have a windows side to my Mac

Then it either is a pirate clone or you are misinformed.
Apple Computer has never used AMD processors in its products.
However, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a Radeon unit, which is an AMD subsidiary. Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox will all work fine with the Intel Core i7 or i5 CPU that powers the Mac, and use the AMD Radeon GPU that drives the displays.

  • Need hints for Optimizing Photoshop CS4 on Leopard / Intel MacPro

Just wondering if anyone had any hints for optimizing PS CS4 performance on Intel MacPro ( I have the 2.66 Dual-core Xeon) My MacPro has the upgrade ATI 1900 video card which I think is GL enabled. From what I have read CS4 now accesses the ATI 1900's GPU memory for increased performance. Is this correct? Does anything need to be configured or does CS4 automatically detect the ATI 1900 GPU?
Any other configuration in CS4 that need to be set?
    Thanks.

Open Photoshop's preferences (Command+K). Click on Performance at the left. The lower right portion of the settings will say if PS detected a compatible video card. If it did, the check box for "Enable OpenGL Drawing" will already be on.
The features that OpenGL drawing adds to PS are listed here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb404898
That may help you decide whether or not you want it on. Personally, I turned it off. One big reason for me is paths. I have to create a LOT of paths for client work. With OpenGL on, paths can be difficult to downright impossible to see as you draw them, depending on the color of the underlying pixels. With OpenGL off, PS uses the standard complementary contrasting colors. Much easier to use.

  • How can I upgrade ver 10.5.8 so I can migrate with my new macpro

I am using Max OS X Ver 10.5.8. How can I upgrade my MacBook
I am using Max OS X Ver 10.5.8. How can I upgrade my notebookso I can migrate with my new MacPro?

    Hello,
One way is to get & Install 10.6, then update it to 10.6.8.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

  • What consumer camera are using that is compatible with FCE 4?

And using an external drive (that is key, have to have soemthing that works with FCE4 and ext drive)
Hi, I am reading through these forums and there seem to be so many compatibility issues in the HD area. It looks like some are just user
settings and then others the actual camcorder just doesn't work with
    FCE 4.
I am trying to find a consumer type HD camcoprder that will work with a INTEl based MAC abnd an external drive
The type of camcorder that is $1200 or less
But after readingt hese forums, it seems like more people have nightmares than good experiences with HD and final cut 4 at this point
I don't know what to buy or think
Thank you, sorry, it's just seems consfusing yet I can handle the editing and operating a camcorder but it's compatibility that concerns me (especialyy with hrad earned money and a possiblity that you can't return an electronic item, like a camcorder in some stores without a re-stock fee
    Thank you!

    Hi there,
I am using a Sony HDR-TG3 (TG1 in the USA) and FCE4.0.0 and now FCE4.0.1.
FCE4.0.1 will allow 1920x1080i work were are FCE4.0.0 is limited to 1440x1080i with this camera.
I have an external Maxtor One Touch FW400 200GB scratch disk. I recently upgraded this disk to a 1TB. I bought a seperate enclosure Macpower FW800 unit and Samsung Spinpoint 1TB, 32MB Cache, 7200RPM SATA disk. I really just needed to extra work space. But the Maxtor on the FW400 was also perfect for AVCHD importing and editing in FCE from my Sony HDR-TG3.
    Hope this helps.

  • Setting up dual ethernet on an intel macpro server

Hello. I am new to the server setup and was wondering....I am using an intel MacPro as a server with a 3.5TB raid. I am using the MacPro as a server, connecting to a 24-port SMC switch which will feed 15 workstations. The internet is through a local T-1. My question is this....How do I configure the Macpro to take the T-1 into ethernet #1, and then out of ethernet #2 to the switch and distribute it using the DHCP service in server admin? I know how to configure the DHCP in server admin, but how do I configure the Ethernet ports on the macpro so ethernet port 1 is the T-1 and ethernet port#2 is sending the T-1 to the switch? Sorry if I am confusing you, like I said, I am new to this. Hope there is some insight available. Tahnks in advance for your assistance.

I wouldn't recommend this because most people who do this have the 'server' running not just NAT, but probably their web site, a file server, maybe directory server, and just about every other server daemon they want.
If this server has one leg in the public internet and one in the private LAN you're leaving yourself open to exposing those services to external users.
It is not possible to use Apple's GUI tools to restrict all the file sharing services to the internal LAN only. It's also not possible to use Apple's GUI to block external traffic via the firewall. This means that, out of the box, any internet user could hit your AFP server, your directory server, and every other service you're running on this box.
It is possible to secure the box, but it means a) getting under the hood and controlling the various services manually and b) never using Server Admin again because it will likely undo all the hand-crafted configuration changes you made.
If you're fine with that, then go ahead. Most people aren't. So your options are to run only the NAT service on this box (which makes this box a VERY expensive NAT device), or leave yourself exposed.
That's why I say to use a NAT router to do that task. For $50 you get a box that designed for that task and will secure your entire internal network. You can use port forwarding to permit specific incoming traffic through to your server (so you can still do what you want), and you don't have to worry (as much) about what information on the server is accessible to the outside world.
