Having trawled through the posts on this form, I've yet to find something to help me with my predicament.
I've just had a BT engineer in to connect us up to BT infinity and he has had to move the master socket for us. OUr old Homehub 1 was connected via an extension at the rear of the house, but the new master socket is at the front - all fine, BT infinity is great (rapid!), but in the study at the rear of the house is a Mac G5 which was connected to the homehub 1 via Ethernet.
I'd like to connect the G5 to the wireless network, and figure it must be possible to configure the homehub 1 to operate as wireless card for the Mac. Has anyone done this please? I've reset the homehub to the factory defaults and tried to connect to the hub to re-configure it. When I try to change the hub settings I'm asked to login to the hub and get a dialogue box saying:
.."To view this page you must log into area "Speedtouch" on 192.168.1.254:80."...
I'm guessing this is a throwback to the prevous router we used, as sing admin or administrator, and the 11 character password (serial number) from the back of the hub will not allow me access to set up the hub, even after a factory reset, so I'm pretty stuck with this.
Has anyone else managed to work around this, or shall I just buy an airport card for the G5 and be done with it? .. that may be infinitely easier in the long run!

I have an odd question.
I was wondering if it is possible to use my MacBook as a wireless access point. I am traveling to my parents house for Christmas with my Nintendo Wii, and they do not have wireless internet. Here is what I would like to do:
Attach my MacBook to my parents wired internet hub.
Create a wireless network with my MacBook.
Connect to that wireless network on my Wii.
I know this is an odd question, but it seems fairly feasbible in my head, I'm just not sure how to go about doing it.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Actually, it's quite simple... like Robert said, go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet and choose to share your connection from built in ethernet with computers using AirPort. Click on Airport options and then specify the wireless "network" name you wish to use and whether or not you want security. If you are only playing games with the Wii, I would suggest not enabling security... It would only make things more difficult... plus when sharing the connection like this, you only have the option of using WEP which isn't really that secure anyway in the right hands. Also, when you specify a network name, choose one with no spaces; this will also make things easier for your Wii to connect. That should do it! Good luck!!

Yes, if it connects to your main router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. Connect the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the main router to the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Extreme.

Configure the AirPort to operate in Bridge Mode. That will turn off both DHCP and NAT services. If you are using the setup utility on a recent version of the Mac or iPhone/iPad, the utility will automatically set up the AirPort for you in Bridge Mode when it detects another router on the network.

This model would be anywhere from 6 to 8 years old depending on when it was originally sold. Please keep in mind that the useful life.....on average.....for a wireless router designed for home use is about 5 years.

Using a WRT54G as a wireless access point with a WRT610N gateway router

I have just replaced my WRT54G gateway router with a WRT610N and everything is fine. However, I want to know if it is possible for me to use the old WRT54G as an access point/wireless bridge on a different floor to the gateway.. that is I want the WRT54G to connect wirelessly as a router to the WRT610N gateway router (not cabling them on the LAN ports) and then I want to use its LAN ports on the WRT54G for local cabled devices rather than use it as a wireless extender. I have read various post but most seem to suggest cabling between the routers.

With Linksys firmware: no. Not possible. A Linksys wireless router won't operate as bridge. It won't connect wireless to other devices. You have to run a cable
With 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt or tomato: you can configure the router as wireless bridge or repeater. Please check the documentation of the 3rd party firmware to find out if your router model and version is compatible. Please remember, that a bridge or repeater with the WRT54G will slow down your whole wireless network.

Using the Airport Card as wireless access point

My iMac is connected to the internet via ethernet. A wireless network has been set up using the Airport Card (not base station) to share the internet connection with a Wii. Is there a limit to the number of devices that can use this access point since there is no wireless router being used?
i.e. can an iPod Touch or other Mac with an Airport Card also use this wireless connection at the same time?

Yes more than one device can use the 'Airport Software Basestation' that you are running.
I am not sure what the actual limit is though, having never reached it, I have used three devices at the same time with no issues with my old iMac G4.

I am currently using a DSL modem/wireless router supplied by my ISP. It is a CenturyLink 660 series. My plan was to use the Time Capsule not only for back-up but to place it near other devices (my home theater receiver, Dish receiver, etc.) that do not have built in wireless capabilities. How do I need to configure the TC in order to do this? Details would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't make clear in the first post that you are wireless bridging .. and no Apple routers cannot be wireless bridged to non-Apple routers. You must run ethernet or have some equivalent.. eg homeplug (EOP) adapters.
But let me add wireless bridging is never a great idea. Using universal bridge or repeater hides the MAC address of all devices behind the bridge. The only way to do this without that problem is WDS. And it is not a proper standard. You will need to check first if the modem support WDS, and with what level security.. many devices only support WEP which is practically leaving the door open nowadays.
Or you pay extra and put another apple router into the mix as wireless AP off the modem.. the TC can bridge to that with full security.

Although I'm not familiar with the Nintendo DS you can use the iMac as a Wireless Access Point by going Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sharing > and selecting Share Connection from: popup menu: however you connect and the choose Airport to share to.

Westell 327w and Wireless Access Point

I had DSL last year, but have since changed to FIOS, which I love. So I have the Westell 327W modem/router that isn't being used. I have decided to use it in another project for the 4 port ethernet and the wireless capability.
As this other project, we are using another service, which isn't DSL. However, I figured that I could use the 327w as the wireless access point. I currently have access to the internet through the provided internet service and from there I go into a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall. From there I run an ethernet cable to the 327w.
As long as I plug a computer into one of the 4 ethernet ports on the 327w, I'm able to ping to the Internet using either the IP address or using DNS. I'm able to surf and everything.
I have also set up the wireless and using WPA security and I'm able to connect a laptop to the wireless. I get the IP address via DHCP from the ASA, so I have turned off the DHCP server on the 327. I have also turned off the firewall. I then test connectivity and I can ping anything on the network that is assigned by the ASA, but when I try to ping to an Internet address, by the address, I get request timed out. I also don't get anything back on DNS and so forth.
What do I need to do on the 327 to allow the wireless to work with the current connection set up.

I got it to work. What I had to do was to set up the 327w in VLAN mode so that the wireless side would send the packets out the ethernet port to the ASA or another router.
In fact, I'm writing this on the wireless setting of the 327w. So setting the VLAN allow the wireless to send and receive packets.

The shop seller convinced me to buy WRITTEN saying that the Dual N will fix my problem.
well it did not. The reception in some locations is still poor.
the same reseller advised me to use the 350N as a wireless access point instead of buying one. The question is how to do it.
I am thinking about the following:
1- Have the WRITTEN installed next to the internet modem connect to the modem by cable
2- in another room have the WRITTEN (approx 20 meters away) not connected by a cable to the WRITTEN
3- When using the laptop in the weak reception area, I try to connect wirelessly to WRITTEN which should be also connected wirelessly to the WRITTEN
Would that be possible. I hope so since there is no way to have a cable connecting the 350N and 610N due to many reasons

How do I use Airport Extreme to create wired access point on wireless network?

Bit of an odd situation. I just went from cable to DSL at home and the modem moved from right by my computer to upstairs.
Trouble is, there's no real easy way to get a cable from the modem upstairs to my X-box (sans wireless connector) downstairs.
I could buy the wireless adaptor for the X-Box, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend any more money.
I have my airport extreme, and I was hoping I could use it to create a wired access point on the network, recieving the signal from the wireless modem upstairs and allowing me to plug in the X-Box.
Is this possible? If so, how? I've been through the config panel about a dozen times, but can't figure out what combination to set up.

Will it work if I use the express to create the network?
Yes, providing that you have an 802.11n version of the AirPort Express and the Express has been configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Then, the AirPort Extreme can be configured to "extend" the Express network. When you do this, the AirPort Extreme will provide more wireless coverage and the LAN Ethernet ports are enabled, so you can connect an Ethernet device.
This will not be a "normal" Ethernet connection. It will only work as well as the wireless "hop" between the Express and Extreme allow.
For best results and performance, a wired connection through the hole in the wall is always best. If you decide to do this, you will need the "new" AirPort Express with both a WAN and LAN port on the device. But, you could try wireless first to see if it will meet your goals before you reach for the tools.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

Can I disable my Verizon Fios Router Wireless radio, connect it to a switch and use my airport express as my wireless access point connected to an in wall ethernet port?

Here's the deal. I have a Verizon Fios MI424WR router. My house has CAT5 throughout the house. The media panel is located in the garage. I want to take the Verizon Fios Router and cannot it in the media panel so I can connect a switch to it, that way, all my CAT5 can fire throughout the house. Verizon being Verizon decided to connect the router directly in the office.
Can I go this route (Router in media panel, switch cross connect to it) and use Airport Express, connected to one of the in-wall CAT5 ports in my house and then set it up as my wireless access point to provide wifi to my portable devices (iPad, iPhone, Macbook)? That is right, by hard wired I was just making clear wired vs wireless attachment. AirPort family of devices will only act in a repeater mode with their own family members, not FiOS routers. they have to be wired to work.

Using WRT54GR as a Wireless Access Point only

I have a WRT610N as my main router. I want to use an existing WRT54GR purely as a wireless access point and ethernet switch. Any suggestions on how best to do that so I can still access the WRT54GR to make configuration changes? Right now I have the network functionality working by simply not using the Internet port on the WRT54G but by going to 192.168.1.1 I can only get to the WRT610N.

I made the change you suggested and statically assigned 192.168.1.200 to the WRT54GR. I can reliably access it through this IP address. I connected it to the rest of my network by using one of the 4 switch ports (not the Internet port). I disabled DHCP on it and configured the Wireless settings to be the same (same SSID and Security Settings) as my other wireless router.
What I'm finding is that devices in my house won't assoicate with it. I tried changing the SSID to a different value; devices were able to see the new SSID but when I entered the pasword they told me that no DHCP server could be detected. A wired device that I plugged into another of the 4 switch ports on the WRT54GR was able to pick up an IP address from the main router just fine so I know that basic connectivity is OK.
To achieve what I want (i.e. the WRT54GR just acts as a wireless base station to extend wireless coverage in the house), do I need to connect the WRT54GR to the rest of the network using the Internet port rather than a switch port? If so, what configuration settings do I need to set up so that all the devices can get their IP address from the main router?

My setup is : I get my internet from my neighbor by ethernet cable from his router. My house is two-storied and ethernet cable comes to top left corner of first floor and the devices(two notebook) are on the bottom right corner at the second floor , insulation greatly reduces the signal strength.

You can use any other routers, do not use X2000 or WAG models. I think they get Internet from an RJ11 connection. Use an Access Point. WAP series.

A Time Capsule? Sure. It's just like many other wireless base stations. It can run in either bridge or route mode - in bridge mode it's just like an access point linking the wired and wireless networks together.
