Use HP network printer in OS 9.2.2 without official driver?

Hello!
I have a HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-one which is connected over ethernet to a router. I also have an old PowerMac G4 (and an iMac G3) that boot into OS 9 and 10.3 and/or 10.4. While I usually use the G4 under Tiger, I'll often boot into OS 9 to work on things that either won't run under OS X or require a lot of CPU/RAM, such as Photoshop, to avoid the greater system overhead with OS X.
While the printer is capable of scanning, I'd just like to be able to print from OS 9.2.2 - which it seems HP doesn't officially support anymore. The driver for the printer will only work under 10.3.9 and up. This brings up two questions:
1. Where do the third-party printer drivers that Apple includes with OS X come from? Do they have OS 9 versions?
2. I know the G4 can print to a network printer (via the Chooser), but what is required for this to work? That is, do I need a driver, or can I choose one of the pre-existing "printer" settings in the chooser?
Thanks for any help,
-Dan

A little more insight on your number 1:
Mac OS X uses Postscript as its central imaging language. This should have meant that printer support was a cinch. It was, provided your printer could do Postscript level 2. All the old LaserWriters that were Postscript level 2 or better moved right into Mac OS X without skipping a beat. Start with the Postscript printer driver, add a PPD that details the printer's special features, and you were done.
Postscript level 1 printers were left high and dry until CUPS/Ghostscript/Gimp-Print/GutenPrint invented a post-processor and turned Postscript level 2 into Postscript level 1.
The ImageWriter (not a Postscript printer) was left high and dry until someone decided that by using Ghostscript and CUPS, you could simulate a Postscript printer, do the rasterization on the Mac, and send the raterized output to the ImageWriter. and AppleTalk Imagewriter. And ImageWriter LQ. and about 800 other raster printers, including many inkjets.
Do these drivers have OS 9 versions? Sorry, No.

  • Iam using 3015 network printer. while iam printing from word it is taking too long to print

    Respected sir,
I am using 3015 printer.  when ever i give print it is taking too long time nearly 1 minute . there is no problem with the network

Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). You can find the DHCP range of the router using its internal settings page or in its manual. Use the CD that came with your router or type the router's IP address (ends in .1) into a browser.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

  • Getting spool error when trying to use a network printer from a remote computer.

I have 2 HP deskjet printers attached to my computer.  One is a D4260 and the 2nd is an F4280 all in one.  I would like both of these printers to be available on our wireless network so that my girlfriend can use the printers from her laptop. The D4260 is working just fine but when I try to print to the all in one it looks as if it printed on her computer but I get a spooling error on mine and no printing.

Go to hp.com.au, top right corner select support & drivers
select software & driver download type in your printer name HP Deskjet F4280
then select your operating system-step 1
on step 2 select utility diagnostic tools, select HP Print Diagnostic Utility
run the software, select your printer, then diagnose...then select fix all
this software automatically detects spooler errors & fix them
just follow the instructions from the HP Print Diagnostic Utility
    good luck.

  • Where do I find user properties for network printers so that I can use a network printer

Wanting to connect to a  PC networked Xerox 4595 workcenter ... the print job spools, but I need to add my user to those with  permission to use that printer. How do I access this information on a MacBook Pro? (Printer properties don't include this information)

Are you connecting to a printer shared from the server, shared by a PC or directly to the printer via the network itself.

There will be a combo box called pre view, change that to finishing
In that select print style as 2 sided print ing from default 1 sided

  • Use network printing

I have à Windows network running. I now have à new macbookpro and i want to use the network printer.
When i use my windows pc I can see that my macbookpro is part of the Windows network, but on my MacBook i cannot see the network, i also cannot Finder the network printer.
How can i use the printer,?

Well please list the Windows PC (version of Windows) you are Sharing the printer and how you are sharing (Windows 7 HomeGroup doesn't work outside Windows). Plus are you telling OS X 10.6.x where to find the shared printer?
Plus read this Windows 7 sharing printer thread and there is a lot of solutions in that thread.

  • Acrobat XI: Printing to networked printer fails without error message

    I'm using Windows 8 Professional.
When I use Acrobat XI Professional or Reader XI to print to a networked printer, Acrobat and Reader throw up the Progress dialog, showing the document is getting spooled. However, nothing appears in my printer's status window and nothing gets printed. There are no error messages.
When I use Windows 8 Pro's Reader app to print to the networked printer, it works just fine.
I thus have a workaround, so not all is lost.
However, how do I diagnose why only the Adobe applications on my computer can't use the networked printer?

    Thanks for the advice.
The problem is not solved.  This is what i have tried.
    Attempt 1.
Log-in as Administrator via  "CRTL-ALT-DEL" twice at the Welcome window.
"Repair" Adobe Acrobat XI Pro installation.
    Same failure as described earlier.
    Attempt 2.
Log-in as Administrator via  "CRTL-ALT-DEL" twice at the Welcome window.
    Uninstall Acro XI Pro.
    Run :  acrobat_ittools_cleaner_p1_040612.zip
Log of "cleaner" shows deletion of very many, but ot all, Registry Acro-associated keys.
At end of uninstall and cleaner processes, re-start machine.
Log-in again as Administrator via  "CRTL-ALT-DEL" twice at the Welcome window.
Disable Norton 360 and Webroot Secure Anywhere prior to Acro XI Pro installation.
Re-install Acro XI Pro (this time, for "Default" choice, as opposed to "Complete" in previous installs.)
Outcome:  NO Adobe PDF printer.  HOWEVER, both during the "Repair" and re-install processes, a message did flash: "Creating the Adobe PDF Printer".
Both Repair and re-install:  The Adobe PDF printer is not listed under "Manufacturer" when "Add Printer" is executed (see image below).
Proceeding via "Have Disk", C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\AdobePDF.inf,  yields the failure to install the driver previously described, for all ten (10) instance of the Adobe PDF Converter options.
    Thanks for any insights.

  • Trouble Printing from a network printer

I recently purchased a MacBook and I am having problems printing using the network printer. It's a HP Color LaserJet CM1017 (or 1015) and my MacBook connects to the printer yet never prints. In the queue it says "On hold authentication required"
    Please help!

You didn't mention if you're trying to share the printer or not.
Using a popular search engine, the general advice is to delete the printer and add it back in.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes with a Network Printer

    Regarding issue kb402704:
Our company only uses network printers. It is completely ridiculous that we have to set the Adobe printer as our default printer in order for Photoshop to run without crashing. We pay all this money for CS3 and your only fix is to set a different printer as default. This is a huge bug that should be looked at. Kinda stupid that CS2 doesnt have this problem with the EXACT same printer.

There are some issues with some users of network printers. The problem
is that it's hit or miss and not easily reproducible. I'm using a
network printer as my default with no problems at all.
I'll also point out that this is a user to user forum, not a direct link
to Adobe. You're simply ranting at other users.

  • Printer to a network printer at a customers office...

I am a pc user switching to mac...
The mfg of the printer must offer MAC and PC drivers to hook directly to a USB on a MAC. So, a mfg like Dell (make by lexmark) will not work with MAC (no drivers offered for MAC), but someone like Lexmark will (drivers offered for MAC). Right?
If a mfg says there printer offers MAC drivers, you must confirm they at OS X drivers, but beyond that, there are no surprises or compromises from the PC drivers. The printer will work as expected with no surprises. Right?
So, how does this work with printers not directly attached to the MAC via USB, but attached to the network via an ethernet cable? For example, if I hook a Dell AIO 966 to a USB MAC, you have to hack it to get it to work (if at all), because Dell does not have MAC drivers. But, it has a ethernet plug, so if I hook it up to the network (with works fine from PC), do I still need MAC drivers to install on the MAC to use it over the network? I think that answer is YES (I hope the answer in no), which leads me to this question...
If I am in an office and join their network with my Mac, I would not be able to use their network printer because I have not installed that printers MAC drivers on my MAC (which would probably be more trouple than it is worth)...that seems to limit my ability with MAC joining ad hoc networks a customer location (for example). Taken a step further, I would not be able to use any of their network assets (e.g. scanner) for that same reason.
Is all that right, or can any computer print to a network printer without drivers installed?
    Please advise
    Thanks!

richard804 is correct. You will need to configure file and printer sharing on all the computers.
Follow this link to configure File and printer sharing.

  • I cannot access my network printer under AEBS(Airport Extreme Base Station)

The current network configuration of me is
    1. AEBS have static IP address. (e.g., 154.123.12.54)
    2. Network printer in my office have static IP address. (e.g., 154.123.12.55)
    3. My iMac is connected to AEBS. And have virtual IP address. (e.g., 10.0.1.201)
The problem is that when I trying to add my network printer on my iMac,
it works. I can find my network printer in the list.
But when I trying to print with that printer, I think any packet is not sent to network printer.
    I think AEBS block them.
How can I use my network printer under AEBS?
I didn't have any problem with my Belkin wireless router.

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Re: Error message when trying to print to a network printer

I just bought the new laptop, and when I try to print to a network printer (one that I've always printed to before), I get a message: "The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable" - I can't seem to add any network printers at all! Help!!!
Is there a setting I need to change to be able to add network printers?

I think you should contact your local administrator and let him install this network printer. He knows how to install right driver and how to find the printer location.
