Use hyperdraw vs. automation for mixing?

hi,
have been working on a little 15 min. film score - my first one... all MIDI regions - used ESX24 on everything.
I have strings, and organ - and want those instruments to 'build' (crescendo) in parts...
do I use hyperdraw or automation for volume swells, etc?
I've never mixed before - this is what I'm doing - MIXING.

First of all, congratulations on your first score!
I'd highly suggest using automation instead of hyperdraw.
You have a few options here too: you can not only automate individual tracks, but output objects (for, say, grouping all of your strings, guitars, whatever) and you can also automate the master output to do global fade-ins/fade-outs.
The great thing about automation is the ability to overwrite on-the-fly. It's easy to get used to and has the same editing capabilities as hyperdraw (nodes, lines, etc.).

You can add an additional Nvidia 6600 graphics card (available at the Apple Store) to the 8x PCI-E slot in the quad. If the TV has an HDMI input, then get a DVI-HDMI cable. If not, the 6600 should come with an adapter for dvi to s-video or component. You can use that to connect to the tv as well (at a little lower quality).

Using hyperdraw for automation of Logic instruments

I'm pretty new to Logic and I have not figured one thing out even after browsing through these forums.
I like the drawing mode that hyperdraw offers for automation of synth parameters and such much more than the regular automation drawing.
Hyperdraw seems more like when drawing automation in Reason which I like very much.
If possible at all, how can I locate and draw automation for all the buttons and sliders on the Logic instruments (and VSTs also for that matter) in hyperdraw style?

Well, the Hyper Editor is really a MIDI editor, so you can create and edit MIDI data, including Control Change messages (like CC07 for volume or CC01 for modulation for example) - so it is like automation in that respect.
As far as I can see, using track automation is the best option because all the available parameters are there ready to automate as soon as you insert the plug in - perhaps I'm missing the point of what you want to do.

Using Automator for Social Media

Hi,
I would like to use Automator to schedule social media posts (links/articles) on a daily basis on 4 different platforms. Is this possible?
If you have tried or are using this method, or would like to please get back to me.
Would be a great way to avoid external software permissions and do it all privately and all for FREE.
With reports and metrics. This may require some Apple Script. I am trying to do what Hootsuite does.
I can probably execute 50%, but would need an Apple developer's expertise to seal it all.

you don't need automator for this. go to finder preferences->general and check the box to show connected servers on the desktop. then just connect to the remote computers and then drag the mounted volumes from the desktop to your login items in system preferences->accounts->login items. then when you log in the remote computers will be automatically mounted. you can also use a cloud storage solution like Mobileme or DropBox and store the password database file in a central online location.

Using Automator for File Sharing, including 1Password Question

I'm using 1Password (http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password) on three computers at my shop and instead of using three separate library files I just want one main file/directory/database that all three computers can use, share and update.
So far I've accomplished this by using File Sharing.
It's working fine though when I shut off all three computers and restart I have to reconnect all computers (selecting a 'SHARED' computer on the left of an open window menu and clicking on 'Connect As...' on the top right) to reestablish the linked file.
Is there anyway I can set up a macro using Automator to do this when I turn on my computers?

Should i use Logic Express for Mixing and Mastering?

recording an LP with GarageBand. are express and pro very close in what they offer ? express good enough for mixing and matering an LP? would like to keeps costs down. thanks SJM

It can be done, but you will need to do a lot of reading and make many mixes to get it down. Mastering is not something you can learn overnight. It'll take you many hours of trial and error just to get something that is OK. A pro mastering engineer has years of experience and thousands of dollars worth of high quality gear. With a lot of practice, you can get something fairly decent, but it won't be like a real pro job would be.
As Hangtime suggested in the GB forum, do a google search and you'll get a lot of sites with articles on the subject of mixing and mastering.

MDT Console with more then 15 machines, How to use the same drivers for more machines.

I'm am looking for a solution to make our MDT design as effective as possible(as small as posible).
The Situation:
The company has more then 15 different computers added to the MDT console for the automated installation of Windows 7. The installations are done in 2 different ways, 1 with a local USB key installation (with the deployment folder on the USB key) and the other
installation is a network USB key installation (with the deployment folder on the server).
The local USB key exists for offices in parts of the world where the internet connection is poor.
The problem:
We have machines which can use the same driver for different kinds of hardware functions (LAN, WLAN, etc..)
If we add a new machine to the MDT and we don't check the box for "Import drivers even if they are duplicates of an existing driver" we will automatic use the driver which already exists in the deployment folder. If say half a year
later we stop using an older machine which "may" have drivers that are being used for other machines and we delete the machine from MDT we should
NOT check the box "Completely delete these items, even if there are copies in other folders". The problem is that this can also lead to a lot of unused drivers in the deployment folder also because we do not know exactly how many
computers are using a certain driver.
At the moment we have another deployment share with for each machine its own drivers installed (so some drivers will be multiple times in the deployment folder) as you can guess this becomes really big.(deployment folder of more then 24 GB). The advantage
of this is that we can delete a machine from the MDT list without having to worry if the drivers for that machine might be used by other machines. It is now just becoming to big in size(GB).
The Question:
Is there not an option within MDT that checks automatically if the drivers connected to a certain machine in MDT are being used by other machines? In this case we would check the box "Completely delete these items, even if there are copies in other folders"
and MDT would not delete the drivers which are still used for the installations of other computers.

I think you are over-complicating this. Basically using drivers that already exist is the way to go. Otherwise drivers will be imported a second, third or fourth time. Which also takes up allot of disk space. If you're concerned about driver management,
then I would suggest to drop your concerns, since there is nothing to less you can do about this particular issue. As long as you don't delete the driver that's been imported earlier by another machine there is nothing to worry.
Ask yourself:
- how long am I going to support model x
- how many times do I want to update drivers
With selection profiles you can easily target which content needs to go where (on your USB drive of-course)
I can imagine that managing 25 shares for 25 different models, just because you 'refuse' to have old drivers in your share, or have removed support for some hardware models, isn't really time and energy efficient too.
If you take a look in your deploymentshare\control folders you will see some XML files. These XML files hold all the entries in your deploymentshare. So your drivers.xml and drivergroups.xml (depending on the number of groups you have) are going to be very
big XML files. These XML files are read by MDT to identify the objects in MDT and under which folder the objects are located.
It's not possible to create or have an dependency between driver files and hardware models, other then creating groups under "Out-of-box Drivers" and using selection profiles.
Another suggestion would be to decrease your number of hardware models drastically. On the other hand, having 25 Gb of offline media isn't really a big deal either. Portable and removable media of those sizes (32 and 64 Gb) isn't that expensive as it used
to be 5 years ago.
Don't get me wrong, I perfectly understand your desire to manage this, but MDT doesn't provide any other way, then the things I have pointed out to you here.

Automator for changing system settings?

Here's my issue: I have an external monitor connected to my 2010 Macbook Pro with OSX Snow Leopard. I do all my work when I'm at home on the larger monitor and use the other screen for iTunes. I use spaces alot, and so when using my external monitor, I put iTunes to open on all spaces so that it's always handy. When I go out with my laptop, I have to change the spaces settings back to iTunes only being open in one space.
It's not a big issue, but does anyone know how to use automator (or by any other means) to automatically change the system settings so that my computer can, on detecting I have an external monitor plugged in, change the spaces settings for iTunes? (and preferably back again when it doesn't have the external monitor plugged in).

Can you use the Vocal Transformer for Live Show? I have automations set up in my vocal track using the vocal transformer and would like my vocals to adjust accordingly while performing live. Is this possible to configure and if so, how do I set it up at the venue?

Vocal Transformer opens in MainStage. All controls in VT are visible & editable in MS. Don't set it up at the venue. Set it up in one or more patches before you leave your house. You will need up to twelve sliders or knobs plus one or two buttons on your controller to get the most out of it.

Auto calculation row, work around for mixed calc methods?

I have a problem with an auto calculation row. One of the columns in the report is a percentage so I want the total row to calculate using a column formula, instead of the Auto Calculation Row calculation method setting.
We're using the auto calculation row as a way to churn through many Entity members, displaying financial totals for 4 Account category groupings for each Entity member.
For each Entity, those 4 rows display the data they're supposed to, and the auto calc row generates the 'Total', which is the calculation method it is set to do. With 2 columns in play, it works like this:
A1 through A4 display data, and are summarised in [A][Total Row]
B1 through B4 display data, and are summarized in [B][Total Row]
An updated requirement for a % column came up, and now we're trying to get that to display properly in column [C].
[C] is created as a formula column
The formula is set to [B]/[A], and formatted to display 0.01 precision
We expect each row to use this formula, and for rows 1 through 4 it does.
However, for [Total Row], it does not calculate [B]/[A]... instead it calculates [C][1]+[C][2]+[C][3]+[C][4]
This makes sense in terms of what the 'auto calculation row' is designed to do, or as to how it is explained in FR documentation.
The calculation method is set to 'Total', so it just adds up all of the data.
But we're looking for a combination of settings or a work-around that permits the Auto Calculation row feature to be used with mixed calculations as I've described.
We're on FR 11.1.2.362

Yes the script can be manually executed. Also if I again put a mxl file starting from the step where it last stopped - it continues execution normally. (i.e. executes StepB2 as well and continues executing)
And today's execution result - I kept monitoring the server, it ran for 3hrs and then halts after around 80% of the steps with 20% were still remaining. I created a new Mxl to start from the last 20% and it ran successfully again.

Using 720p 50fps video for Slow Motion

Hi there,
I've recently started using Photoshop Elements 9 for editing my action sports footage, and its a big improvement over free to use programs that I used before.
The thing that I have run into, and that I can't seem to solve, is making footage slow down.
I'm using both a GoPro camera (HD and HD2) and a Canon EOS 550D to shoot my video. Everything is shot at 720p @ 50fps so that I can use the footage slowed down when I want to use it that way without making it choppy (in normal 25fps export video (can be 720p, but I might use 1080p as well))
I've set up a project in PE9 using the preset for PAL-DSLR-720-50fps so that (me thinking) I can import 50fps footage without losing frames for importing. However, when I use the time timestretch function (through right click menu) and set the strech to 50% (so effectively 25fps) the video doesn't appear to have the extra frames. Even after rendering, if I foreward 1 frame at the time, every second frame is simply just a copy of the previous one. I've checked the file properties through PE9 and it says that the file is 50.000fps, so there should be 50fps available to build the footage from (yet only showing 25fps in frame by frame mode).
In searching the forum I've found some other suggestions to solve this, including the 'Interpret Footage' function. I've tried setting it to 'Interpret as 25fps' to see if this changed anything (as to smear out all available 50 frames over a 25fps clip, doubling its length), but that also retured with a copied frame every second frame.
I've also tried setting the project preset to DSLR-1080p @ 25fps to see if that might have an effect, but as soon as I import my 720p video it changes the project preset to AVCHD-LITE-720p50. Using that returns the same issue (btw, what is the difference between DSLR setting and AVCHD?). Using the AVCHD-720p @ 25pfs together with 'interpret footage at 25fps' also reverted to 50fps as soon as I imported the video file.
Frame blending isn't an option as it doesn't actually blend them. It just overlays the two frames and changes the opacity of the upper one (or so it seems), creating this weird blurry overlay effect, instead of interpolating the objects between the two frames (but maybe I'm asking for too much on this function).
Can someone please help me solve this slo-motion effect issue? I really want to use the full available 50fps footage I have shot to create smooth slow-motion in a 25fps export video (i'm not looking at reducing it much more than that). It seems that half the frames are dropped out as soon as I import into PE9.

As we've often discussed on this forum, Go-Pro footage rarely behaves in this program as source footage. The best solution we've found is a conversion to an editable format.

In fact, mixing video footage of any types is usually not a good idea. Especially when your project settings may not fully match either.
Try using just the footage from your Canon. When you add it to your timeline, do you see red lines above the clips? If so, you are not using the correct project settings for your footage.

IPod Touch automation for museums

I'm trying to figure out how to use the Touch in museum exhibitions - to schedule start-up/shutdown times and automatically play movies and sound, for example to provide interpretation of an object in a showcase. I've exclusively used Macs in museums for 15 years, using combinations of Applescript, quicktime, Flash, Isadora, iPhoto, iTunes, etc, System Prefs and custom-coded software to deliver automated exhibitions - now I want to use the Touch but no luck so far.... anyone have any advice or ideas ?

Thanks Barra - since posting the question I located and watched the S_Jobs keynote on the 2.0 release, the SDK, Apps Store, etc so will follow up post-release - I expect someone will create the capability I need for the device. My programming skills are pretty basic (Applescript level) and I expect a deeper level of knowledge would be required to build a robust software system for the Touch.
