Use ibook as a wireless server

hello, i have a 14" ibook running leopard{os x 10.6.8}. it has an airport card in it. if i installed the server software for this os, can i use it as a wireless server? tonythanking you in advance,

You could also use it as a backup server for other Macs in the house.
I use a Mac mini (currently running Leopard) and CrashPlan (free to backup to your own backup server).
CrashPlan is running on my Macbook Pro (Mavericks) a Macbook (Lion), my Wife's Macbook Pro (Mavericks) and Macbook Air (Mavericks), and my Mom's iMac (Mountain Lion) 300 miles away.  It does a very nice job, even when the Macs are not in the house.

  • Using iBook as a Wireless Router

Here is the setup - 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro running 10.5.2 with no direct internet connection and a 1.33GHz iBook running 10.4.11 connected to ADSL via built-in ethernet.
Previously, I was able to use the iBook as a wireless router by selecting the Sharing folder in System Preferences and then turning on 'Internet Sharing' on the Internet tab and selecting 'AirPort' in the 'To computers using...' dialog box. IIRC I could then click on an'Airport options' button (or something similar) on the same tab and that brought up a dialog box to set up a WEP password.
After a complete erase and install of the 10.5.2 system on the MacBook Pro I am trying to once more share the internet connection but can no longer get this setup to work.
On the iBook the 'Airport options' button is greyed out so I can't set up a password. On the MacBook Pro it gives a message 'incompatible security'.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to why this isn't working. Could it be that the iBook thinks that the WEP password is already set up from before? In which case, how can I delete it (it doesn't appear in Keychain Access)? No-one can remember the password :-((
    Cheers
    Tricia

I don't know if I can help much, but I too use an iBook as a wireless router for my MBP, only with dial up. Since we live out in the sticks with no close neighbors, I never bothered setting up a password. But I have had no problems getting the iBook to work.
I just checked, and it looks like you have to stop sharing in order to be able to change any of the settings, as they are grayed out while sharing is on. If you click on "Stop", all the options will be accessible again, including the ability to set a password. At least that's how it works with mine.
If no joy, please post back. Since I have the same set up, I could experiment a bit.
    Good luck!

  • HP webservices tab not available when using HP Jetdirect 2700w wireless print server

I recently bought HP Laserjet Enterprise 500 m551 dn color laser printer with HP jetdirect 2700w wireless print server ( one day old at this time).
I was able to configure the device and enable/ use eprint services using the embedded server with a wired connection.
However when I attach a the mentioned wireless print server, the "Webservices" tab disappears from the configuration website, the printer reports that the eprint services are not enabled and ofcourse hp eprint or google cloud print do not work. The printer appears offline at eprintcenter. Everything else works fine.
On the product website for the wireless server, it clearly states that this is compatible with eprint services.
    What am I doing wrong.

  • Using an old iBook as a file server...

Okay. So, right now I'm using an old Apple iBook G3. It's a Dual-USB 800 MHz version. It's running Panther 10.3.9...
In the near future (Two months, maybe) I'll be purchasing a new Macbook. I don't want to just pawn off my old mac, or throw it out (Everyone I know has new PC's. Giving them an old mac would be useless).
Plus, I know that once I move all the files I think I need on it, and toss it out, BAM! I'll realize I forgot a folder or something else on it. So what I want to know is...
Is there any way that I can use this old iBook as a file server in any way? I've seen such things as "Back to My Mac" which does what i want it to, but (of course) is a leopard-to-leopard only feature. Is there any way that I can let this iBook sit on my home network (Wired in, if need be) and reach it from... say... Rochester?
Thanks for your time. Even if it is for a quick: "No."

You'll be more likely to get informed opinions if you ask in the iBook G3 forums rather than here in the MacBook area. When you repost, it will help if you describe what sort of "file server" you are thinking of; how many users, what types of files, etc. so that people have an idea of what your needs might be.
Is there any way that I can let this iBook sit on my home network (Wired in, if need be) and reach it from... say... Rochester?
Yes, it's certainly possible. How easy will depend on large part on your ISP and your home network setup.

  • Using an iBook as a wireless router

I recently found that i could use another computer like a base station. so i want to ask ppl some questions before i do this to make sure that no one will be able to try to use my slow AOL access as i have been using other people's wireless internet (firewalls=no problem). I want to make this a closed network but i do not know how to do this. Also please tell me how to do this, I know you go to shared and the internet section and create a computer to computer network... other than that how do i do this?

To use your iBook as a wireless router you can use the internet sharing feature. You can setup a WEP password if you click the Airport Options button.
    Goto SystemPrefences->Sharing->Internet Tab.
From the drop down menu select 'Share your connection from Built in ethernet'
In the section 'To computers using' check Airport.
Then choose the 'Airport Options' setup a wep password.
    Finally click the 'start' button.
However WEP encryption can be cracked so it is not really secure.I see the internet sharing feature built into the Mac OS as an on the fly temporary thing you can use for example if a friend comes round who needs to get online.
The best solution is to invest in a wireless router.

  • How can I use Oracle Wireless Server to transcode content.

    Hi,
My application can generate and aggregates data from various sources and can output data in XML. Is there a way that send XML to Oracle Wireless Server and then a user of my application can see the output from mobile device( Pocket PC, Nokia, Imode etc.). Can it be done programmatically or using some wizards/configurations etc. I am relatively new to OracleAS so a detailed answer will be highly appreciated.
    [email protected]

You can use FOP, but the formatting of the xsl (Xml Style Sheets) takes a little work. If you have the Oracle Reports server up and access to the development product, why not go that route?
You want the filtering and sorting and searching, yes, but then you also want to print them out.. Then you would probably be best looking at replacing the Oracle Reports setup with BI Publisher. You can convert Most your reports over to bi publisher layouts easily.. (I have heard of some reports that do require recreating in Bi Publisher from Oracle Reports..)
Then you can have your Apex Reports and call Bi Publisher from APEX and everyone wins..
Is your Oracle Reports stuff used by non-APEX applications, that could be modified to use Bi Publisher?

  • What to look for in a used iBook G3?

Hi, I'm in the process of looking at a used iBook G3 with 640 MB SDRAM and 40 GB HD. Anything I should look for that could make or break a deal?
(I'm new to Apple and have never owned or used one)!
    thanks in advance

I believe that only the 900 MHz G3 iBook came with a 40 GB hard drive standard.
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook_900.html
Don't pay much attention to the price listed there. It's usually too high. A better check on price is eBay's list of Completed listings. (You will have to sign in to eBay to see the search results.)
If you are looking at that model, a Combo drive (so you can burn CD's) will be standard. It's a nice feature.
If you want to have wireless internet access, make sure that it already has the AirPort card installed because the original AirPort card that any G3 iBook requires is becoming scarce and expensive since Apple stopped selling them a couple of years ago. Plan on spending $130 (or more) for a used AirPort card if it doesn't have one.
Good luck. If you get one, you're gonna love it.

  • When using the OS X caching server, after the first update is made, do the rest of the computers have to enter the Apple ID to download the cached update

    Hello,
I have a question that I had not found an answer to yet. I would like to use the OS X caching server, and I know that it caches a software update as soon as the first computer downloads it. If an application requires authentication using an Apple ID, and the first computer authenticates and downloads that update, do the rest of the computers have to authenticate as well, even though the update is downloaded from the caching server?
I am looking for a solution in that regard. For the company that I work, I would like a solution for users to be able to download software updates (OS or Application), without having to authenticate with the company Apple ID, for security reasons.
Would anybody be able to help?

Yes.  You still need to authenticate on the subsequent machines if you are interactively applying the updates.  Caching server stores the application data, not the App Store authorization information.
    You have some alternatives.
1:  If you are using a single "corporate" Apple ID to claim your free apps (iMovie, iPhoto, etc), then you can download them on your master machine and then user ARD, JAMF, or other tool to push the full application packages out to all the clients.  They will already be tagged to the Apple ID and since the push is happening in the background, as long as the user is not using the application, they will not know you are updating.  Remember, App Store updates are the entire application, not update packages.  So pushing the entire .app bundle is effective.
2:  If you are looking to distribute purchased apps, you really should look at the VPP (volume purchase plan) from Apple (http://www.apple.com/business/vpp/) (there is also one for education but you mentioned company).  This allows you as the organization to purchase the correct number of copies and then control the distribution of the apps to your end users.  They can use their own Apple ID to claim the apps but you can reclaim the license should the user leave the organization.

  • WRT54GL causing bsod only when an Mac ibook g4 connects wirelessly.

    Hello all you tech gurus!
I consider myself a pretty adept pc user. I've built systems, installed wired and wireless networks, many kinds of peripherals, and so far, have not run into any problems I have not been able to figure out.
    Here is the situation:
I set up a wireless network for a friend using a WRT54GL router with a firmware version of 4.30.11. There are only 2 wired pc's connected to this router using c5 ethernet cabling. The first and main pc (which is the pc getting the bsod) is a Compaq Presario CQ5320Y running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. The second pc connected by ethernet is an ancient home built system running XP Home. Both pc's work well in all regards, both internet and non-internet items. There is an Apple pc (don't know the model of this one) that is connected wirelessly with no problems. These 3 pc's can all be using the internet at the same time with no problems what-so-ever.
The problem arises when a Mac ibook G4 connects wirelessly to the network. When the ibook connects to the network wirelessly, it causes a bsod (error code 0x00000007)on the Compaq Presario within 10 minutes of the ibook connecting to the network.(yes, I've researched that error code and ruled out hardware problems on the Compaq. The Compaq can run for weeks on end without any bsod, it only bsod's when the ibook G4 connects to the network wirelessly.) IF the ibook G4 is connected to the network via an ethernet cable, there are NO PROBLEMS with the Compaq. The Compaq ONLY gets the bsod when the ibook G4 connects to the network wirelessly.
Sad to say, I have almost no experience with Apple pc's and I am not sure if this is a router configuration problem or a configuration problem on the ibook G4. Remember, there is an Apple desktop connected to the network wirelessly with NO PROBLEMS.
If anyone can point me in the correct direction in trying to fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Many thanks!
    Chuck

Or you can assign a static IP address on the computer it self.
If it is a MAC computer then click on APPLE icon. Go to system preferences. Click on Network and select Ethernet. Go to Advanced settings and go to TCP/IP settings. Change the configuration to Manual and assign a static IP address to the computer.
If it is windows computer then open Network connections. Right click on Local area connection/ wireless network connection and go to properties. Click on Internet protocol TCP/IP properties. Assign a static IP address.

  • I am a teacher and want to distribute a textbook I created using iBooks Author through Ibooks. We are not 1 to 1 and students share devices on a cart. Can I publish and distribute the book if it is used by multiple students?

Title says it. I created a textbook using Ibooks Author and want to load it on my class set of 30 iPads that are used by 5 different groups of students throughout the day. It is not a 1 to 1 device. Is there a problem with doing this as the Apple ID would be a generic that downloads the content many times on each iPad for my students?

The two processes are so unalike that you need to bone up on what they involve before answering, I think...you can't just shrug and expect specific help, sorry.
See iBooks Author: Publishing and distribution FAQ - Support
Distribution isn't automatically like iOS apps, where the store is involved by default.
You are free to put your .ibook file on a school server/your own server, and anyone can download for free and use it, independent of any Apple ID and the app store. If you want to restrict to your school/students, put it behind a login.
You can put it in the store as a free download and any Apple ID can download and use via any iTunes Account. If you sell via the store, each download/purchase is tied to the Apple ID used to facilitate that transaction. This is not a requirement.
Again, you need to become more familiar with the distribution process and not worry so much about the Apple ID scheme involved at the moment so you can make an informed decision, I think

  • Having trouble getting iBook to connect wirelessly after getting new modem

Ok so I got a new modem, and I put it in PPoE mode and bridge mode so that the internet would work with my router.
Internet is working great/fine on my PC that's wired to one of the ports on the Linksys, and internet works fine when wired to the iBook. I changed no settings on my iBook from before when the router was with the old modem/old settings.
    Modem: Motorola 2210-02
    Router: Linsys WRT54G2
iBook G4, I think it has the 1 ghz processor (bought it back in 04!) I am getting a signal on my iBook showing the wireless network at full strength.
I made sure that the router is not blocking anonymous request and MAC filtering is off, but it does not connect to the internet.
    I'm stumped help!
I used these instructions to bridge the modem:

  • Where is the the Wireless server documentation ?

    Greetings,
I installed the Portal and Wireless documentation and the AS Infrastructure 10g, but I don't know how to use them in order to develop a mobile prototype because I don't find the documentation. The install disks contain only the release notes and the installation documentation, while on the web site, beside a bad hyperlink and some articles here and there, I didn't find anything which might be called documentation, ie a unique document explaining everything concerning the wireless server, starting with the begining, ending with the end a passing through samples. Does anybody know where this documentation is, I cannot beleive that it simply doesn't exist ?
    Kind regards,
