Use iMac 21" as screen for Vista PC

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a new iMac 21" all in one unit. However I still have my Vista machine, and would prefer to keep both machines going.
Is there a way where I can use the iMac screen for the Vista machine. I know I will most likely need to purchase a new video card or something for the vista machine to do this, but I would like to know is it possible. If so, what do I need???
On a side note, I really don't think this is possible, however if I was to connect the vista machine to the iMac either via ethernet or router could I have a speedy way of complete control, therefore removing the need for 2 keyboards and 2 mice on the desk.
I have a fairly small house so space is limited hence why I would prefer not to buy some huge desk so both machine can fit on it.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Stefan,
Forgive me for being a complete noob here....
So the best way for me to achieve what I am wanting to do is to connect the two machines via my router (faster then wireless for me) then run a VPN plus some type of remote control program (i am assuming that is a VNC?).
VPN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vpn would only be needed if you use the internet to connect the two machines for the sake of security.
VNC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vnc would suffice if you can connect the two machines through your own home router.
The machine that you want to control remotely has to run a VNC Server, whereas the machine that controls the other runs a VNC client.
OSX has the needed software already included. It's called Screen Sharing.
Have a look at the OSX help for it.
On the Windows machine you would need a VNC Server program.
UltraVNC or TightVNC are free open source programs for that.
I have seen programs like VMware Fusion? would this be any good?
Fusion is a completely different app.
It enables an Intel-based Mac to run Windows (or other operating systems) alongside OSX by providing a 'virtualized' environment in which Windows is installed and runs.
It removes the neccessity to have a second Windows computer.

Thanks again

Hope it helps

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system.  10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines.  Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist.  There are no Firewire to USB cables.

Is there any hopes for a device/adapter that would make it possible to use an Thunderbolt-equipped iMac as a screen for other devices? It worked with DisplayPort, why wouldn't it work with Thunderbolt? Is it just a business political decision?

Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

Can I use 24 in iMac as screen for mac mini?

I can see that there is no way to use the iMac screen thru standard methods.  As the iMac is out of warranty and the DVD/CD drive no longer works I am willing to have the iMac's case opened and have some jerry-rigged solution installed.  Does anyone have an idea as to how that can be done

  • Use imac as pc screen??

Hey ive recently got a imac which is GREAT! but still want to use my PC for gaming and other odds and ends. is it possible to hook my PC up to the imac and use it as the screen instead of havin two screens on my desktop!!!!

You could use VNC to display your PC screen on your Mac's screen. It's not really using the Mac's screen directly but it lets you access your PC via the Mac's screen.
You'll need a monitor on the PC to install VNC and get things configured but once the PC boots and starts the VNC server, you can connect to it and display the screen in a window on your Mac. I run a 'headless' PC this way for times when I need real PC hardware (I too prefer Parallels).
If you're not familiar with VNC, I'll give you more info. Or look to:
    http://www.realvnc.com/
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
Keep in mind that you're still dependent on the MacOS to see your PC. There's really no way to use the Mac's monitor by itself but VNC has served me well when all I wanted to do was use my PC from within my Mac desktop.

  • Buying Used iMac - What to look for?

    Hello,
I'm a devoted mac user. I currently own a late 2008 unibody Macbook, and have been looking for an upgrade. I came across a used iMac posting on a craigslist-like website. The configuration is a low-end mid-2011 21" iMac (quad core i5, 4gb, 500gb).
I asked the seller for the serial number and checked it out the support site. The warranty is due to run out on Thursday, just enough time for me to buy extended AppleCare. The price seems reasonable (approx $730 whereas a new iMac is $1200), and I've asked to see the iMac in person tomorrow. I wanted to know what to look for when making the final decision.
Also do you think I should hold out for an Ivy Bridge iMac (rumoured to be coming soon??) or will it not make a difference for normal coding/browsing (no photo/video editing/gaming)? One factor discouraging me is that Apple has hitched up the prices for the newly released Macbooks here in India (the base 13" pro used to be $1250, now $1530!!!).
    Thanks a lot!

Then you have to make sure the original owner releases their account at Apple or purchases and upgrades will be impossible.
Oh! Had no idea about this... how does one release the account? I mean, is there a way i can check it on the machine itself? The applecare site doesn't show any registration info.
    Thanks!!

  • Using my 17" flat screen for a TV.

I have cable TV and a cable modem for my DSL. I run the cable TV directly to my VCR and use that as the tuner to change channels. I can run the audio from the VCR through my stereo system so don't need the TV for sound. And the sound is so much better than way.
I'm wondering if there is a way for my to use my 17" flat screen monitor from my G4 tower as a TV. I don't use the desktop much. When I upgrade I'm thinking of just getting a new MacBookPro and a Timecapsule and doing away with the desktop. I'd like to repurpose the monitor as a TV.
Is there anything extra I'd need to do this? Would I need an Apple TV or a TV tuner?

I would imagine the only way you would be able to do this would be via an external USB/Firewire Video device that will allow video in connections to your MBP.

  • Qosmio G30-102 - Can I use it as HD screen for my PS3?

    Hi
I've got a Qosmio G30-102 and I wanted to know would it be possible to connect up my Playstation 3 via *HDMI*??? At the moment I can only use the AV cables which is really fustrating. If i can use the laptop as the screen for my PS3 using the HDMI cable please inform me in how to do this since I have tried all methods that i can think of.
    Thanks
    Mo

    Hi!
There is no software available for this because its a hardware limitation and this cant be solved with a software.
You have to understand that your notebook is equipped with a HDMI *output* port and not with an input port!! ;)
What you can do with a HDMI port? You can connect your notebook to LCD screen via this port. You will have a better picture quality as with other connection possibilites like S-Video for example.
For example I use the HDMI port of my notebook to watch movies on my LCD screen with HD quality or I watch my photos.

  • Can I use my iMac as a screen for my Mac Pro via Spaces?

Ok, I know this sounds odd... Nevertheless, I wanted to know if it's possible to do this. I write a lot of music and want to use two completely different computers to manipulate midi files vs. audio files. I want to use my Mac Pro for actually writing the music, and then render the files as audio and arrange them on my iMac.
I don't want to get a second monitor, but rather, be able to flip back and forth between my iMac and my Mac Pro on the same screen, relatively quickly. I'm not sure if Spaces has this capability, ie. using one desktop that corresponds to the iMac and one desktop that corresponds to the Mac Pro, all on the iMac's screen.
Is this even possible or does the iMac not even have the capability of accepting a video signal from my Mac Pro?

If you Mac Pro has a mini display port out, then the iMac can be used as a monior for the Mac Pro. This is from the apples support document:
To use a 27-inch iMac in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
    1. Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
    2. Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
    3. To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.

  • How can I use my 27 iMac as a screen for my Satellite tv box? Usb?

I'm trying to watch TV from my Directv, into the usb in in my 27" iMac, to use the iMac as a tv. There are several adapters that will convert it properly, but I don't know where to look for software that will let me just watch it in real time, as opposed to recording it.
Anybody know of such a program/software?
    thanks!

For the 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs with Mini DisplayPort you might need something like the Kanex XD http://www.kanexlive.com/xd

  • Using iMac as a display for MacBook Pro?

I understand that the new iMacs can be used as external displays but can not find any information on how this works. Is it just a matter of connecting a MacBook Pro to the iMac and hitting a key? Also, what cables do I need to get this to work?
    Thanks

Hey, I just got my 27" iMac last week and can verify that this works, as of a few minutes ago. I used the cable that converts from DisplayPort (the end that plugs into the iMac) and the mini DisplayPort (the end that connects to the MacBook Pro.
Plugged in the cable and the iMac screen flashed gray for a second, indicating, I guess, that the iMac had detected the external device. Then I could toggle it over with the Cmd-F2 keyboard trick. When you toggle it on, the iMac screen looks like a giant second monitor for the MacBook Pro. When you toggle it off, the screen switches back to your regular iMac desktop. When I first connected the cable, the MacBook screen dimmed briefly with an overlayed thermometer bar I hadn't seen before indicated some sort of calibration, perhaps? That took a few seconds, then it worked like a charm.
HOWEVER, if you are expecting the iMac to function as a second display for another device (like a PC, for example), the same trick DOES NOT work. This isn't clear in the documentation on apple.com and even some of the people in the Apple Store who I spoke to when I was buying it had not much clue about this, other than that it would work with a MacBook Pro. There's another device required (evidently) to make this work. Have had to order it, but have not tried it yet:

    Hope this helps!

  • Use iMac as secondary monitor for my PC(Windows)

    Hi,
    I have a PC running windows 7 and an iMac 27" i5 running OSX10.6.6.
I'd like to use my iMac as a secondary monitor for my PC (I still need some applications from my windows computer and I dont want to install windows on this beautiful mac).
Is that possible with the _Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter_ on the apple store?
Sorry if it has been asked before, couldn't find it!
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
No, that adapter will not help you accomplish your goal. It only works in one direction; mini-DisplayPort to DVI to allow you to attach a DVI video device to your iMac, such as a projector or display by the m-DP. You will need either a video card in the PC that provides DisplayPort output, then you can use a DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable, or you will need a converter to switch your PC's DVI output to DisplayPort signal. Those converters run US$150 from 3rd party developers such as Atlona or Kanex and are then restricted to a a maximum 720p resolution.
