Use iMac as screen

Is it possible to use a iMac as a screen for a Mac Pro Book?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course, but only if you have got a Late 2009 or Mid 2010 27-inch iMac, or a Mid 2011 or newer iMac. It can be done with Target Display > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You have to keep one thing in mind: you cannot use a Mid 2011 or newer iMac as an external display for a Mid 2010 or older MacBook Pro, although all the information should be in the link. Read that link carefully.
If your iMac does not support Target Display, you can use an application like ScreenRecycler

  • Why can't Chapters created in GarageBand podcasts be viewed as large screens in iTunes and iPads using iMac OS 10.8.5 and iPad iOS7?

I created podcasts using GarageBand and added artwork as chapters to the audio naration. In the old iTunes they would show up as seperate large screenswhich could be easily read by other on a large monitor.  While they can be seen as tiny pictures when you click on Chapters in the menu bar at the top, they are not large enough for students or audience members to see.
I also create these to go on my iPad. Withe the old version of iTunes, they could fill up the screen on the iPad. in iOS7 they are small, do not change with the audio as they are supposed to, and you only can see the next screen if you touch the < in the top left, go back to the previous screen and then touch "Now Playing".  Since they do not automatically go to the next chapter artwork screen as the audio is playing, you would have to just know when to make the change.
This now defeats the whole purpose of the ability to add artwork or any visual guide that would go along with the podcast that was created in GarageBand and sent to iTunes.
Even when you make the podcast into a movie, which does show the artwork as the audio is playing, you still can't control it by having the chapters available as they used to be in the seperate window. This used to be in the control of the three lines on the bottom right side of the screen which now are the list of the next podcasts. In fact, on my iMac screen, the window is also very small. You can't make it larger like you could in the earlier version of iTunes.
It is such a disappointment to me that this has changed.
I can still use my old iPod to do the podcast the way I have described above, and fortunately I can show those using AppleTV on a large monitor, but if I wanted to send the podcast to students to place on the iPad, they would no longer have the full value of what GarageBand creates.
Is there any other program that could be used on the iPad that would not only have the artwork chapters in sync with the audio, but would have a way to quickly go from one chapter to another should a student wish to skip parts of a podcast and only review certain portions?
If nothing is available now, is there anyway to get a message to the iTunes people to get this back into the iOS7 devices? I wish someone could let them know what a loss it is to those of us who have used these applications for this kind of teaching or studying.
Please create another iPad app that would work with GarageBand for this kind of podcast!!!
I use an iMac OS 10.8.5 and an iPad iOS7.
    Thanks

I'm going to reply to my own message. After spending some time trying to solve this problem, I found an application called Chapter Maker in the App Store. It is reasonably priced and once you have turned your podcast sent to iTunes into a movie by opening it in QuickTime, you can either just show it through QuickTime on your desktop or laptop computer, or if you want it to work in iTunes the way it used to work, you can send it from QuickTime to iMove (go to file/Export to... iMovie) where you can then export it as a movie to your desktop and open in Chapter Maker where you can add the chapter headings back in to the podcast and Export it. You can then add it back into the movie folder in iTunes where you can see the visuals in full screen and navigate through the chapters quickly.
I also tried this out by connecting my iPad to my computer and moving the movie into my iPad. While it doesn't have the chapters visible to navigate quickly to a chapter heading, you can touch the play screen and drag it to the places you need to review. Not as nice as the old iOS version, but it also does show the visual screen using the full screen of the iPad.
As I mentioned earlier, on my older iPod, I am able to view the visuals in full screen and by touching the list at the top right, it turns over to navigate through chapters with clearly labeled headings.
I use this to study topics for myself and also to pass on information to students.
I do wish they had kept the old version the way it was, but guess that's the way things go.
Check out the application in the App Store called Chapter Maker if you are looking for the same solution to this problem. Even if you aren't, it's an easy way to add sections to any video.

  • HT204388 how do I switch between my mac mini and iMac using iMac screen?

how do I switch between my mac mini and i mac using i mac screen?  I thought it was using F2 but that does not seem to work.

To switch between your Mac mini and iMac, you just have to turn on or off Target Display mode. To do it, press Command and F2 keys in your iMac, not only F2

I have a 27" & do not suffer from such a problem.  You should keep in mind that these are technical support forums. Generally, the only people posting here are those with problems. The thousands/millions without problems don't ever come here.

    Hello DJJOC,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To start troubleshooting this issue where your iMac's screen will not illuminate, please reset your SMC by following the information outlined below.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: For Intel-based Xserve computers that are not responding, you can shut down locally, or by using remote commands, or by pressing and holding the power button for five seconds.

You are prevented from Airplay mirroring certain things like DVD content as the material is usually protected so you get a checkerboard type display.  I think there is a theoretical risk that the Airplay stream could be intercepted and the protected video copied, albeitin lower quality.
Apple may be being cautious or are required to do so with the DVD player app by movie studios/licensing authorities.  It makes no sense to the average consumer who is just trying to send their purchased DVD to the TV via the computer and AppleTV.
Playback in something like VLC should work - not tried it myself but others have commented it doesn't have the restriction.

  • Can i use imac screen with another comp?

hi all - can i use my imac screen with my g4 powermac?
I like to run it but my old monitor is big and ugly - be nice to feed into my sexy g5 imac screen
advice - as ever - appreciated
    dc/uk

I don't think so. You could use Remote Desktop, but it would be slow and annoying, and it costs more than a decent 19" ViewSonic.
But that would be nice. I'd love to run even my iMac G4 into my wife's iMac G5 screen.

  • Can I use my iMac G5 screen as screen instead of TV?

Can I use my iMac G5 screen as a normal screen instead of TV to be working with AirPlay either Apple TV?

iMac G5s don't support AirPlay.   Video input on iMac G5s is only practical through Firewire, and then you only get about 720 x 480 resolution through S-Video adapters such as some of Elgato's old EyeTVs.

  • Use TV as screen for iMac

Can Apple TV enable use of TV screen as a remote computer screen

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

  • IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive?

IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive - which is still working? I took it to the Apple store and they quoted $500+to replace the monitor. No help as usual. Can I buy a MAC compatible monitor ($189) and use it as a primary monitor? Can I set it up if the screen on the IMAC is dead? Any other solutions?

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

It's possible you've got a 'hot corner' set up. If you have and move the mouse to a certain corner of the screen it'll do as you describe. Have a look in System Preferences>Mission Control, bottom left of the window click on the 'Hot Corners' button and see if there is anything in there.

  • Bought used iMac, reinstalled snow leopard, stuck at start up screen

I bought a used iMac from someone who has owned it for about a year. He had upgraded to Lion from snow leopard but I wanted to reformat everything back to the original settings(like new) so I could start from scratch. I used the original snow leopard start up discs that came with the machine and held down c when restarting, the installation went fine but when the computer restarted after the installation the apple in the grey screen appeared and the spinning circle at the bottom spun for a few seconds then froze. I let it sit over night thinking it was just taking a while to start up but in the morning it was still on the same screen, nothing had changed. Any idea what the problem is?

You have to use Disk Utility to erase the ENTIRE boot drive by selecting the drive makers name on the far left, it will have the disk size too.
You need to do this to erase the 10.7 Recovery and reset the partition map back to 10.6 acceptable version so your 10.6 Disk Utility can repair the drive (and get the machine to boot) and remove the 10.7 EFI partition for 10.6 version.
I suggest you also use the Security Option > Zero all data, not for scrubbing the drive, but also for mapping off any failing sectors.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Once 10.6 is installed, setup and Software update until clear.
then install programs, then files and only to 50% of the hard drive if possible for best performance.
don't go over 80% as it can start having issues as it gets near full.
Good Luck, setup a clone and then you can boot from the external clone drive anytime and in seconds.

    This is a good deal.
I paid that for my 2009 27 inch iMac with similar specs through an Apple Reseller.
Is this from an individual or Authorized Apple Reseller?
If from an individual, then there will be no type of warranty.
An Apple Authorized Reseller wil have a warrany period of 30 days to six months depending.

  • Bought a used imac 21.5 I5, and the owner cleaned his stuff off the HD, when i turned it on, it comes up with a gray screen, and, no way to get on the internet, to download OS X

used imac starts up with a gray screen

You will need to purchase a retail OS X install disc.
You can Purchase OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard.
While you are ordering this, call Apple at 1-800-MYAPPLE and ask for retail software sales and tell them you need a set of original OS system discs for your iMac.
You'll need to give them your iMac's serial number to obtain these. There will be a small, but minimum charge for obtaining and shipping of these discs.
    Good Luck!
