Use iMac speakers as center speaker?

Hi,
i'm considering migrating from PC to an iMac (late 2013) but i don't want to lose my 5.1 setup which i spent my life building.
I'm evaluating some alternatives and one of those is this one:
I own a yamaha amplifier with DTS/Dolby decoder. I'd like to use a TOSLINK cable to connect the iMac to the decoder in a 5.1 setup (i know this is working).
The output of the amplifier would be: Front Left, Front Rigth, Rear Left, Rear Right and Subwoofer.
I'd like to use the iMac built in speakers as the center channel (both of the iMac speakers, of course).
I know about the Audio MIDI Setup tool which allows a huge number of different connections between different sound interfaces.
I googled a lot before posting this discussion but all i could find were tutorial about aggreation of ANALOG outputs.
Is it possible to use the optical output for the surround (except center) and the built-in speakers for center channel?
I might consider building a statue to the one answering this

  • Using imac speakers on a G5

    Hi there
I was going to use the speakers that came with my wife's imac (G4) with my Mac G5. I realised, however, that the speakers have a 2.5" jack whereas the only audio output socket on the G5 is 3.5". Has anyone else tried to use these speakers with a G5 (they're those white rounded ones) and where do you buy the adpator from that I will need to convert the 2.5" jack into 3.5" (sneekily, there is a short metal round section at the bottom of the jack which means that a normal adaptor from Maplins or wherever won't work!

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
There is some discussion of this issue here

As the solutions mentioned are either discontinued or expensive (or both), it would probably be easier to invest in an affordable powered 2.1 speaker system that will connect to the analogue audio-out port on the G5, such as
    http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,CRID=2173,CONTENTID=122 45
    - or a not-so-affordable digital 5.1 system with optical audio-in that can use the optical audio-out on the G5, such as
    http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,CRID=2177,CONTENTID=948 6
No specific product recommendation intended - you will receive as much advice on competing speaker systems from this Forum as you can use, should you require it...
    Good Luck.

  • How can I use IMac speakers on Mac Bk Pro?

I wantto use my Older IMac speakers (small, clear, round, cute) on my Mac book pro.  Of course, it can't be a simple as "plugging them in".  The plug on the speakers is larger than the openning on the PRO.
I'm thinking a gadget between the two should work but What?

  • 7.1 speakers and center speaker identification

I am trying to set up my speaker system again after moving despite the difference of wattage between the two front speakers and the center speakers I can not tell them apart for proper speaker configuration. How can I tell the difference between the 20 watt center speaker and the 8 watt front speakers?

If you have an nForce 2 motherboard with nForce audio it'll only support 5.1 channel output.
The T7900s come with a cable which has 3 jacks which go into your soundcard and 4 jacks which goes into the T7900s. I think you've the 4 ends which go into your speakers the wrong way around. Try connecting them differently.

  • Center speaker heating up, cutting out sound

I have a Creative Inspire P7800 7.1 speaker system, hooked up to my computer with an Audigy 2 sound card. I've been using the speaker system with no problems whatsoever, and they sounded great.
I moved down to my university this week, and after hooking everything in and putting on a DVD, I found that the voices weren't audible. I checked my center speaker, and it was very, very hot. I unplugged it from the sub and left it all night to cool off, and tried plugging it in again, and it worked for about 10 minutes before the sound cut off again and it felt warm. I have checked the wire for any signs of fraying, shorts, etc, and I cant find anything. I even took another speaker (one of the rear ones), and plugged it in to the center for a while, same issue, which leads me to believe there is something wrong with the electronics on my sub.
Has anyone else had this problem? Can someone suggest a fix, or know if creative can send me a replacement? Thanks!

ok, question are all the speakers looking identical? are the marked which position they are to be in?
generally with quite a lot of creative speaker sets the center speaker is more powerful than the others usially about 20W rather than 8W, so if you have plugged the wrong speaker into the center socket then it will overload the speaker. and you will have to find the actual center one and use that.
you could try turning the center volume down from the audio mixer.
no, the speakers are not all identical. The speaker in the middle is horizontal, and the rest of them stand vertical, and the cord lengths are different. I assume that the ones with the longest cords are meant for the back, and the shortest to the front, but I've mixed the left/right ones around, and they dont seem to affect anything.
I found what's causing the heating, but even as an engineer, I cant understand why.
I had to make long extension cables for all the speakers to allow them to reach all the ends of the room. The front left, right, and center are all connected via a simple 2 wire extension cord that I soldered together. The left and right speakers were not affected at all (they stayed completely cool and worked fine), while the one on the center was heating up. I unplugged it from the extension and plugged it directly into the sub, and watched a 2 hour movie. Fine. Never even got hot.
(This is not the original center speaker, that one overheated and now barely makes a sound.)
I dont think that my speakers have different power usages, as I took a rear speaker and used it as a center speaker and it works fine.
I've used a multimeter and tested my extension cable for the center speaker, and it's not shorted. What in the world is going on?!

  • How do I use GarageBand as a amp/speaker to listen to my Electronic Drum set? I have a MIDI-USB cord already but I can't figure out how to listen to my set through the software using my computer speakers?

How do I use GarageBand as a amp/speaker to listen to my Electronic Drum set? I have a MIDI-USB cord already but I can't figure out how to listen to my set through the software using my computer speakers?

If you want to listen to the sounds of your drum set, you should use an audio cable and connect it to the computer's line-in, then create a real instrument track.
If you use a Midi/USB interface, you'll have to create a software instrument track and select one of GB's drumsets as the instrument. Hopefully your drumset's midi notes are mapped to the right sounds in GB.

  • How can I use the speakers from my old iMac (with miniRCA? plug) on a new iMac

How can I use the speakers (M-Audio) from my old 24" iMac on a new 27" iMac?  There is no jack on the new iMac - is there an adapter that will use the mini-RCA (?) plug from my old speakers to connect them to a new iMac?  Thanks ...

    Thanks again!
Hmmm ... I wonder.  The input jack for external speakers quit working on my old iMac (it made lotsa static noise for a while when I moved the plug or computer, then quit working completely; I figure something inside the computer got loose or crapped out - and I'm too cheap/lazy to take it the 20 miles to the nearest shop that might fix it).  When I plug the speakers into the headphone jack on the old iMac, I get very low volume or just one channel.
I don't have the new iMac yet, but I was hoping to use these old speakers instead of buying new ones.  I will certainly try your solution - what do I have to lose?  If they don't work, then I get new ones - or try something else.
    Many thanks for your time!

  • Center Speaker plays center sounds and rear sounds. Inspire 5.1 5300 speakers.

My inspire 5.1 5300 speakers are set up for 5.1 surround sound. I have CMSS enabled. I hear static from the rear speakers. Everything seems to be set up just fine. But when I run the speaker test the front right, center, and front left work. The rear left and rear right speaker sound comes out of the center speaker instead of the rear speakers even though the center speaker also gives out the correct test sound.
I have an audigy card, SB0090 is the model number. I don't know the retail name.

I dont see how the sub wont work. It has the seperate front, rear, and center in. The sub should work with just the front in as far as i know. My SBS 450 seems to work that way... i have yet to get my inspire 5.1 working but ill find out if i happen to..

  • T7900 Speakers (7.1) cannot get center speaker to work

I am having a problem with my center speaker on my 7.1 system
all other speakers play fine includin the subwoofer but the center speaker makes no sound
i have set the control panel option to 'surround sound' and i have tried '7.1'.
i have tried speakers with many different medias and programs
In device manager: got 'legacy audio drivers'
got 'NVidia nForce Audio Codec Interface'
got 'nVidia nForce MCP audio processing unit'
got 'Unimodem half duplex Audio device'
default deveice is "nVidia nForce Audio"
from what i can gather the subwoofer and the center speaker are connected through the same channel but for some reason the center speaker gives no sound
if i connect the center speaker to a different port (i.e. line in ) it makes sound

If you have an nForce 2 motherboard with nForce audio it'll only support 5.1 channel output.

  • Side, back, and center speaker on inspire p7800 not working, PLEASE HELP!

I have had the inspire p7800 speakers for awhile, and they worked great, the sound was really great. Then a little while ago, the side, back, and center speaker stopped working. If i turn the volume up, i can hear a kind of static noise in them, but when i play a game or listen to music they don't do anything. i have an Audigy 2 zs sound card, and i just installed all the creative mediasource software. I was using the speakers fine without the software, but i read on a different post, that you can turn on cmss in the EAX control panel. i installed all the stuff, but i can't find the EAX console anywhere on my computer. all the mediasource is is a music player, and a file converter. The speakers stopped working about a week before this, and i unplugged everything and repluged it. After that the center speaker didn't work, but the others did. but now only the front left, and front right speakers work. Please help me with this problem.

Thanks in advance.
If it doesn't power up then it's either the subwoofer or power adaptor that's faulty. So the only thing you can do is contact customer support or the vendor.

  • Can't here my center speaker on my Inspire 5.1 p5800

I got inspire 5.1 p5800 speakers and my sound card is an sound blaster audigy platinum.
When i do test my center speaker works out find, but when i play music of any audio file type, video of any file type, dvd in 5. mode and games in 5.1 mode I can't here my center speaker.
If I put the speaker of to my ear I here low volume sound (very low volume).
    Can anyone help

I found media player that will play the center channel now!If you have it use intervideo dvd 6 as a music player.
and set it for the 5.1 of course and I like movie surround more than music surround
one thing i love with p5800 speakers base is that at only 83% max base on sound card turned on and only 50% base on speakers turned on its one heck of a loud base
its all based on what files are 5.1 and which are not and win dvd platinum can force the upmix to make the center speaker work if the stuff isn't 5.1 .
like windows media player has 5.1 but doesnt change the play back of things that arn't 5.1
I dont know why on some dvds on media player you set to 5.1 the center channel doesn't work though.
But at least as long as your 5.1 mode turned on in intervideo win dvd 6 platinum the file will always play 5.1 even if the file is mono sound.
another good thiong about intervideo win dvd 6 is that it plays the divx and to me the performance is better than my divx pro....

  • No sound from my center speak

Hello,?I have a sound blaster audigy 2 card and 5. logitech THX speakers. I can not get any sound out of my center speaker. I used ot have a diagnostic program that tested my speakers and would let me reset them if I encountered a problem. I can no longer find that diagnostic problem. If anyone can help me by either knowing how to get sound back or how to get that diagnostic tool back I would be greatly appreciati've. Thank you for your help and your time.

What?kind of speaker system are you using if I may ask? I believe the card has only 3 holes to connect speakers to and line-in?where your surround set might have more. If you've got a Creative Inspiron set or something similar you might want to check if the cables which go into the central unit, the subwoofer in most cases, are connected properly?too. Greetings,
    M
