Use imported photos in another package

Hello i have recently imported all my photos into iphoto; i am aware that i can edit the photos in iphoto but what i have found odd is that if i copy it to a new folder to edit the photo, the changes are copied to the original and then if i delete the new version it also deletes the original. now as i have been playign with controls i have become aware of this and dont want to lose any photos this way, what is the best way for me to edit a photo within iphot and not alter teh original?
Also if i want to edit a photo in photoshop where do i find the photo, as i think i tried to just copy it from iphoto but it would not allow me to do so.
Any help with the above would be great.
thanks

You’ll need to explain this a little better:
what i have found odd is that if i copy it to a new folder to edit the photo, the changes are copied to the original and then if i delete the new version it also deletes the original.
Where are you “copying to a new folder”? In the iPhoto Window? DO you mean Album?
If so, iPhoto works similar to iTunes. Every pic is in the Library, each Album is a subset of the Library. What you see in the Albums are the same pics, referenced to the Library. Change the pic in one place, change it in them all +because it’s the same file+. If you want to have different versions of the pic, then duplicate it before editing.
what is the best way for me to edit a photo within iphot and not alter teh original?
iPhoto +always preserves the Original file. No matter what, all your edits and so on a carried out on a copy of the file. Check out the Photos -> Revert to Original command.
Also if i want to edit a photo in photoshop where do i find the photo
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • How to import photos from "another user"?

    I am working on a movie project (iMovie HD 6) under my username, but all the family photos are under my wife's username and, thus, in her "documents."
    I found I could not directly import photos from her folder, so I had her share the photos we want to use in a folder on the "shared" documents. I then import these into my iPhoto library, and then am able to import into iMovie.
    However, there are several photos for which I cannot view - when I try to open them directly from the FInder window, I get the error "You don't have permisson to read this file." Accordingly, I cannot import these into my iPhoto library and, ultimately, into iMovie.
    As far as I know, all the photos were imported in the same manner, so I can't figure out why some are "viewable" and some are not.
    Any ideas on my problem, or suggestions on a more direct way to import these photos?
    Thanks so much for the help.

    Hi Bruce - how about copying her photos onto a CD or DVD, and then copying back from that into your iPhoto?

  • How to import photos from another program on computer eg. Adobe Photoshop

    Can photos be imported to IPhotos from another program on the same computer eg. Adobe Photoshop?

    Photos aren't "in" Photoshop. They're in the Finder and has just been set to use Photoshop to open them.
    You can import files into iPhoto by
    The File -> Add to Libary command
    Drag and Drop to either the iPhoto window or the iPhoto icon.

  • How do I import photos from another iPhoto library?

    Hi. I'm trying to consolidate photos from three macbooks into one central iphoto library on a new mac mini. I started by copying the iphoto library of the largest onto the new mac mini and replaced the existing (empty) library on the new mini. All is good - that's one macbook down.
    How do I import the photos from the other two though? I attempted to bring them over using File -> Import to Library, but when I navigate to the iphoto libraries of the other macbooks, the iPhoto library itself is greyed out so I can't select it.
    I want to import the photos, events, albums, etc.
    Any way to do this?
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
    I want to import the photos, events, albums, etc.
    So you want to merge the libraries? The only way to do that is with the paid ($20) version of  iPhoto Library Manager

  • Can't import photos from another machine???

    I have downloaded a few albums on another machine and then brought a copy home to put on my iPhoto library but every time I try to import I get an error message saying:
    '+The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).+'
    All the images are in Jpeg format!

    they are in my iPhoto Library
    How did they get there? iPhoto will not import pics from the active iPhoto Library Folder - a protection against duplication. There is never a need for the user to enter that folder and anytime you do you risk damaging your Library.

  • Import Photos from another Mac

    I would like to get photos from iPhoto, which have been edited (i.e. given a title) from my MacBook and have them on my iMac as well. How do I do that?

    The elegant way to do this is to get both Macs on the same network--this can be done using a network switch or router. Then, on the Mac receiving the photos, open iPhoto, go to the preferences, click the Sharing button and check the "Look for shared photos" box.
    On the Mac with the photos, open iPhoto, go to the preferences, click the Sharing button and check the "Share my photos" box.
    On the Mac receiving photos, look in iPhoto and you'll see the shared iPhoto library. Click on the icon, select all the photos or albums you wish to copy, and just drag them into iPhoto. The photos will copy and even look for duplicates.

  • How to import photos from multiple iphoto libraries to iPad

    How do I import photos from multiple iPhoto libraries from my iMac to the new iPad? I have 4 different iPhoto Libraries on my iMac.
    I can import photos from  iPhoto library 1,  to the iPad, but when I import photos from iPhoto Library 2, created on my iMac to the iPad,
    it deletes the original photos that I imported from the first iPhoto Library and replaces them with the import from library 2.
    I only want to import selected photos from each library to my iPad. Can someone plese help me?

    As Ralph has suggested, if you want to sync photos from your computer, you must include all photos that you want to sync - with each and every sync. You cannot import photos from another Main photo folder on the computer. You must create an all-in-one photo library in iPhoto and sync from that folder. You can select one level of sub folders from within that main folder, but all of those folders must be included in the main folder - in your case it is in iPhoto. That is just how the sync process works with Photos.
    I don't know how using third party apps affects the photos that you have already synced from iPhoto, but take a look at these apps in this Google search. Maybe Wifi transfer is the way to go for you.

  • Upgraded and can't import photos

    Hi There,
    First, I have to admit that I have tampered with my iPhoto library. I didn't think it would have such dire consequences, as most apps are so user friendly and drag-and-drop friendly.
    So, I'll try to give a concise explanation of what's happening. I don't think it's a dire situation, I'd just love to rebuild my library so that iPhoto is happy again.
    1. Was running 10.2.8 with iPhoto 2.0.
    2. About 6 months ago, renamed all of my folders in the library. Realized this was bad when iphoto lost all my pix, but managed to rebuild the library (not with original dates)
    3. Last week, upgraded to Tiger (10.4). All of my apps seemed fine, except iPhoto. Still running version 2.0, and would crash on opening.
    4. Installed iLife 04, upgraded iPhoto to 4.0.3. Now I can open iPhoto, (I held option and created a new library) but there are only 5 pictures in my library (ones that I have added from my camera since the upgrade).
    5. I have a backup copy of my old iPhoto library on my desktop. when I try to import these photos, the bar says "working" for about a second, then the highlighted button in iPhoto switches from "import" to "organize". It just won't let me import anything from the old library. I tried to drag the old library folder into the new one (bad idea?) and that didn't work either.
    6. Have considered taking all of the photos out of their library folder on the desktop and trying to import as individual jpegs. Is that a bad idea?
    Any thoughts on how I can fix the mess I've made?
    Any input appreciated...

    Julia:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As you've found out you've committed the cardinal sin of iPhoto, Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
    Version 4, when trying to import photos from another iPhoto library folder, imports the thumbnail files as well as the full sized files. Not a good thing.
    I suggest you use iPhoto Extractor to copy all of the full sized files to the three new folders that will get created on your desktop by the application. Then you can import those three folders into your new library. Of course you will lose all of your roll, album, keyword information but you will have your photos back in a working library. When you have them all in your new working library and are satisfied that you got them all you can delete the old library and the three temp folders that got created.
    Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Import photos / Synchronise folder issues 3.5 RC

    Having spent a couple of weeks restructuring my image schema I tried to update LR 3.5 RC to the new directory structure.  This involved lots of UPDATE FOLDER LOCATION, IMPORT PHOTOS and SYNCHRONISE FOLDERS across about 1500 folders and about 500,000 image files both NEF and JPG .
    There are several problems I've come across.  The main one is the number of files listed by LR as contained in the folder do not match the directory contents. Scynchronise folder doesn't remedy the problem although the numbers found in the first part of the process, counting files seems to correctly identify the numbers involved.
    I have a directory which the OS reports as containing 353 files (all JPG) LR reports 290. Synchronise folders dialog counts 71 in the import new photos dialog box.
    Clicking SYNCHRONISE brings up the import screen. With the "Don't import suspected duplicates" ticked, the lower left corner of the screen tells me; 68 photos selected, ignoring 8 suspected duplicates (there are no duplicates!) 277 previously imported files.  None of those numbers seem to line up...
    Clicking import puts 5 images on screen as being imported and when control is returned 3mins 45 seconds later, LR notes the directory containing 295 images. (still not the expected 353)
    I then remove the folder from LR and add the same folder from the File menu using IMPORT PHOTOS. Now I'm shown (bottom left corner again, 345 files. (check all, don't import suspected duplicates.) 2mins 30sec later and LR reports 345 files.  Syncronise folder counts 8 files but the import screen is now blank. This doesn't happen every time but on 9 folders that I counted, it happened 5 times.
    On another folder, where LR reports only 1 file (OS correctly shows 64 files) 63 files are incorrectly identified as being duplicates!
    Where a folder has been moved and LR shows the folder name with a question mark; "find missing folder" (which BTW defaults to the catalog location...so to just point the lost folder up a level to the parent folder, 5 clicks and some mouse scrolling are required every time! A pain when you have to do it 1500 times!)
    but back to the problem, having found the right place to point it, merge is an option where the folder name is already found. again on an intermittent basis, the error wording was something like (attempting to close with 1 process still active(?)  You can click past the error and all seems to work ok,  but I wonder if it is connected to the error above?
    Is anyone else finding this issue or have any suggestions how to work around it?
    Any suggestions gratefully received!! :-)
    OS is XP, 4 gig memory, quad core with twin 1 gig graphics and twin screens.

    further to the previous...
    Just tried the REMOVE and IMPORT PHOTOS trick on a directory that had incorrect numbers in it and noticed that of the 295 files that the OS sees, LR insists that only 268 exist and 26 are duplicates!
    26 duplicates in a directory that LR knows nothing of?????? Unchecking Don't import suspected duplicates brings the total to 295.
    Hmm, bugs in the IMPORT PHOTOS and / or  DUPLICATE finder sections with 3.5! Doesn't do the same thing with 3.3, (checking 3.4)

  • Casting Object using imported class

    The problem im having is when trying to de-serialize an obejct. the class that defines the object is stored in a different package and this code works fine when i move the class into the same package.
    Im getting a ClassNotFoundException on the line with the >>
    Any thoughts on why i cant cast using a class from another package?
         private void loadTest(){
              try {
                   FileInputStream fi = new FileInputStream("./Tests/"+plantComboBox.getSelectedItem()+"/"+mode+"/"+testComboBox.getSelectedItem()+"/"+testComboBox.getSelectedItem()+".test");
                   ObjectInputStream oi = new ObjectInputStream(fi);
                   >>test = (Test)oi.readObject();
                   //test.printTest();
                   oi.close();
              } catch (Exception er) {
                   er.printStackTrace();
         }

    Yeah i figured it out. The object that was serialized was made in a different project and was contained in a package called "main".
    In my other project When i was running that method with the "Test" class in the same package as the method, it was, coincidently in the "main" package and when i moved it to my "test" package and the object was de-serialized it was being re-initialized with its package as "main" and throwing the error.

  • USage of import java.util.* & using another package

    When we use import java.util.*; from where does JAVA take the class that are related to util, when I did search for "util" in my machine, I got about 50 results for folders named util and also some where in a folder called "java" when I opened it it did not have the classes, that I was expecting. So I am not clear where does it get the class files from. This is not only for this but for any import commands like import java.io.*;
    When we get another package or source code which was written in java and want to use it in our code where do we have keep the files ? eg. i have the java code that i m writing in c:\java then do I put all the downloaded related files in that folder and then run the code ? or i keep a folder inside java folder and then import them into my code ?
    please do advice.
    Thanks in advance.

    When we use import java.util.*; from where does JAVA
    take the class that are related to util,It means when you use a classname in your code, and that classname is neither in the same package as the class you're writing, nor imported specifically by classname, that it will search for it.
    Where it searches is every folder called util whose parent folder is called java which in turn is at the root level of one of the classpath elements. That is, if classpath contains "A" and "B", and you refer to a class called "Foo", then it will look for "A/java/util/Foo.class" and "B/java/util/Foo.class".
    search for "util" in my machine, I got about 50
    results for folders named util and also some where in
    a folder called "java" when I opened it it did not
    have the classes, that I was expecting. So I am not
    clear where does it get the class files from. This is
    not only for this but for any import commands like
    import java.io.*; All the java.* and javax.* and whatever else it part of the core API is in rt.jar, which lives inside the Java distribution. Classpath elements can be directories or jar files or zip files.

  • TS3195 since installing ios7 on my ipad I can no longer import photos to my Mac using Image Capture or even Preview. The device appears in the device list, but no photos appear. Anyone have a solution for this? Is it another glitch in ios7?

    Hi - I just dowloaded io7 to to my mini ipad and now cannot upload the photos on it to my Mac - which I was able to do with the old system, and still can do with my old first generation Ipad. Very annoying. The device appears in the list in Image Capture and Preview, but no photos appear. Is there a way around this? It is the quickest and best way of transferring photos from a mobile device to the computer - but has iOS 7 messed this up???

    Hi I have figured it out on my own just today coz what apple suggested didn't help much so I just have to do it by myself.
    This is what you need to do:
    open your computer and search for autoplay, it will open rightaway and then scroll down look for your device then change "ask everything" to "import photos and videos in windows" connect your ipad again then tthe import box will open.. and your good!
    i hope this will help you. Good luck! :-)

  • Is there a way to use iPhoto and *not* have it import photos?

    Hi there,
    I'm transitioning from a PC to a Mac and everything is going fairly well -- overall a better user experience. One question I have is, is there a way to use iPhoto without having it import photos? My main issue is that currently iPhoto imports all the photos that I want to view/edit in iPhoto and copies them to it's own folder structure. I like to manage my pictures in a folder structure that I define, so I already back up my photos to another location and now I'm finding that iPhoto is just duplicating the pictures that I already have where I want them, sucking up precious space on my SSD.
    So is there a way for me to just point iPhoto to a folder, make my edits on those photos, and have iPhoto automatically save those changes to the original folder I pointed it to, instead of duplicating the photos in it's own folder structure?
    It occasional things like this that makes me miss some Windows features. In this case, I miss Windows Photo Gallery.

    Hm, ok so if I edit my photos (adjust brightness etc) in iPhoto and then export it, does it export with the brightness changed, or does it just export the original?
    It exports whichever you choose - the edited version or the original.
    However, am I the only one with trust issues with importing all my photos into iPhoto? I'm scared the library will get corrupted, etc.
    NO you're not the only one. The protection against any data corruption is a good back up, and you need that for any data on any computer running any OS. But in the case of iPhoto, remember too that the original files are stored exactly as they are imported, in folders, in the filing system.
    that when I go to export the photos, there's a LOT of duplicate file names that the export chokes on, which makes it very tedious, no, painful, for me to export a large number of photos.
    Explore the options under File Name when you export from iPhoto using the File -> Export command

  • I can not open i photo. it needs a library that i can use to import photos but i created already books, slide shows and had over 6.000 pictures in the librarybut i can

    i photo does not open. It says i photo needs a photo library but I had more that 6.000 pictures in my library. I created already books and slide shows. it seems everthing is gone.
    I get as reply
    - select a library from list -- but no list
    or
    - find another library
    or
    - create a new one and import photos later
    any chance te recuperate  or  find all I had in i photo

    You can try and recover deleted files from your Mac with an app like File Salvage
    To create a new Library:
    Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'.By default it goes in your Pictures Folder.
    To save book etc that you have created you need to back up your Library.
    Most Simple Back Up
    Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
    Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    Also, please don't type in block capitals. They are hard to read and on the forum it looks like you'e shouting at everybody.
