Use in Italy

Italy, thus far, has no Iphone. Should I purchase it here and use it there with any GSM provider or should I purchase it there once Apple ratifies a contract with a local provider? I hear that a new UMTS based Iphone may be made availabe in Italy to meet the provider's needs; there are talks that it may be TIM. How do I deal with this issue if I will return to the US within two years? If I buy here, I know I can return and use AT&T but, may have a problem overseas. If I buy there - whenever the phone will become available, I assume the UMTS phone will not work in the USA. Is there someone that has an answer to my dilemma? Thanks a lot!

The iPhone is sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T only, in the UK as carrier locked with O2 only, in Germany as carrier locked with T-Mobile only, and in France as carrier locked with Orange and Apple sells an unlocked iPhone in France (at a significantly higher price) which can be used with any GSM provider based in France. This is mandated by French law and if no, Apple would not be selling an unlocked iPhone there.
If you purchase an iPhone here, you must unlock it yourself - Apple nor AT&T will do this for you. Doing so will void the warranty and Apple will not provide you any support. An iPhone purchased in the U.S. must be activated with AT&T in order for Apple to honor the warranty.
If you purchase an iPhone in the UK, Germany or the carrier locked version in France, the same applies. I believe the unlocked iPhone version sold in France works with other French carriers only.

  • Micro Sim Purchase for Use in Italy

Is it possible to purchase a microsim (Vodafone or tre(3)) for use in Italy here in the USA prior to travelling there? Why not purchase over the internet like everything else. Could pay for service and provide necessary info. Would save the hassle of finding a kiosk or shop there.
    Thanks for any ideas.

    Just leave it NTSC.

  • I've bought in Manassas #356 one IPHONE 5S UNLOCKED to be used in Italy but it doesn't work. HELP ME

On 3/6/14 I've bought in Manassas #356 one IPHONE 5S UNLOCKED to be used in Italy with the italian provider. I've paid it US$ 649. Back in Italy, the phone doesn't work with any provider. I've sent one email to the store not receiving any reply. I've called the store but none accepted to read this e-mail or gave me any solution. This problem has been caused by a mistake done from Best Buy employees and as customer I expect a quick solution from Best Buy.

    Hello MassimoMastrocola,
When traveling, it’s essential to have an unlocked phone as each country has different carriers. I’m sorry to hear that you may have received a phone that was tied to a carrier local to the United States.  This must be the last thing you want to be worrying about while in Italy, and I’m sorry you’ve had a difficult time trying to receive assistance.
Because of this, I’d like to take a closer look into your predicament to see if I may help. I’ve sent you a private message which may be viewed by logging into the forum and clicking on the envelope icon in the upper right-hand corner.
    Thank you for posting!

  • Ipad bought in China to be used in Italy

    Dear All,
I tried to find a discussion to answer my question alone but I didn't find the similar discussion, so sorry in case of the solution already exists.
I'm Italian and a Chinese guy friend of mine would send me as a present an Ipad3 (new Ipad) bought from the Apple store in China.
I don't want she waste her money in case of the device doesn't work in italy.
She told me asking to the apple store staff that it will have no problem using it in Italy . (the problem is just the warranty because it will be valid in china only)
    The model will be
    Ipad 3 Wifi + 3G - 16GB
What do you think about it?
Any suggestion if the device can has functional troubles here in Italy?
Of course I will use it with an italian SIM card.
    Thanks for your support
    MagicoBua

    Hi Guys, any suggest?
    Please help!
    Thanks

  • Can a 3g with verizon be used in italy?, can a 3g with verizon be used in italy?

can an Ipad 2 with 3g work with verizon in italy?

You can use it over WiFi, or consider getting a a MiFi device with GSM sim card.
In Italy (and throughout Europe) the 3 Network sell the Mifi out of contract with a monthly top up traffic for around €50.00 with a sim.
This WILL allow you to connect where ever you find an Edge or 3G signal by converting the cellular signal to local WIFi sgnal.

  • Video format for use in Italy?

WIth Premiere CS2, I made a 1 hour DVD slide show, with music, for a friend. She wants a copy for her friends in a very small town in Italy. Their video standard is PAL. However, if I make a PAL DVD, I will not be able to check if it works right, which is always a concern with my iffy DVD burner. I am in California. and all I have is an NTSC  format TV and DVD player.
Not having much experience beyond 3 mins videos for you tube, I figured I could make a version just for using on a computer, such as .avi, .wmv, etc. Does anyone have any idea what formats or what settings I should use?
Pixel Aspect Ratio has me the most confused. If I use "same as project", presumeably NTSC, will it play okay on overseas computer screens?
    Any suggestions?

    Just leave it NTSC.
In Europe most dvd players play ntsc.

  • Iphone use in Italy

    Hello,
I am looking for help and clarification from experienced international travelers with Iphone/Verizon.  I am a one time naive international traveler, about to embark on my second trip. The first time I was in Italy I was only there 6 days on business and did not have an Iphone so purchased the Italian equivalent of a Tracfone to keep in touch with coworkers. This time I will be in Italy almost a month and have an Iphone 5S. I've read a lot of different things and really want to know for sure what I need to do to be able to communicate with people back in the U.S.  Some suggest purchasing a local Sim card, but  I have my Tim phone that I can use for local calls. What I really need to be able to do is email, message, Facebook, with people in the U.S. My specific questions are:
    1.  If I don't intend to make phone calls to the U.S., do I still need to purchase an international plan? (I have the More Everything plan.)
    2. Can I truly do texting, messaging, email, send photos, etc, for no extra charges when connected to WiFi in Italy? And again, must I have an international plan?
    3.  Do I need a local Sim card to do all of the above?
    4.  The place I am staying does not provide WiFi, so I purchased a mobile WiFi unit. As I understand it I will need a local Sim card for this. Does anyone know if you purchase these in varying amounts of data capabilities? Or what the costs are? Has anyone had experience with these, and how well they work? I'm going to be roaming all over, and also didn't want to go out at night to try to find hotspots so hoped this would be a good option.
    5.  Does the phone need to remain in airplane mode only, or also turn off mobile roaming?
As before, I am a newbie international traveler, as well as fairly new to Iphone so if I sound well, naïve, I am! That's why I'm asking for clarification.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
I should add, that I have gone into my Verizon store, (always helpful,)  but they told me I needed to call customer service to discuss international calling. Well, I've tried numerous times and the wait times were always astronomical. I tried doing "live chat" on line and the agents are never available. I leave in 3 weeks and I need answers to my questions, so am reaching out here!  Thank you!

    1. You don't need the calling international value plan, but you may want to consider the $25/100 MB international data plan
    2. Texting- no, this will be 50 cents to send and 5 cents to receive.  iMessages, FaceTime, Skype, other messaging apps, all ok over wifi.
    3. No
    4. You can buy local SIMs at several places in Europe, however wifi hotspots are very common in Europe.  If you still want the hotspot,   I would go to a local cellular carrier store. This is a good reference : Italy: SIM card purchase in Italy - TripAdvisor
    5. To be absolutely safe, turn on airplane mode, and then only turn on wifi.  If you forget and use some data, it is Very expensive - over $20 per megabyte!   That is why I recomment the $25 for 100 MB international data package.  You can accidently use 20 MB in a few blinks of the eye-- $400 mistake.  Plus it gives you the leeway to use some data in an needy situation.

  • How do I unlock my Iphone 4 to use in Italy?

I am traveling to Italy soon, and I am "unlocking" my phone from ATT. Is there anything else I need to do, or can I just purchase a pre-paid sim card (for example from TIM) and use my phone as normal? Does my phone need to be jailbroken or anyother actions to make it work?

If AT&T is unlocking it for you, then no.   Once unlocked it will accept sims for any carrier.
If you unlock it by any other means such as jailbreaking then you void  your warranty, and will not get assistance from these forums or Apple.

  • Unlocked US iPhone4 to use in Italy

    Hello everybody,
I would like to know if somebody already bought in USA an unlocked iPhone4 and tried to use it in Italy with an Italian micro-Sim card.
    Thank you,
    Micky

It will work just fine. The iPhone is a world phone, works eveywhere on supported carriers networks, as long as it is officially unlocked.

  • How to use in italy an airport extreme base bought in the states?

I have received as a gift an Airport Extreme base bought in the States and it doesn't work well. In few words it happens that the connection with the modem is discontinue. Maybe it's because it was built to be used in an "american" environment. Is there someone that can help me to understand if an US base cannot be used in Europe or what can I do to set up correctly the base? Thx a lot. Massimo
    Product: Airport Extreme
    Version: 7.7.3
    Modem: ADB Broadband DA2200

You will simply plug the Extreme into the main router by ethernet.
Setup the Extreme to bridge mode.
Whatever the airport utility chooses which can be wrong.. simply press edit when it is finished.
Change the Network setup to bridge.
And for wireless I recommend you select a manual channel for 5ghz.. because the US model is set to North America and does not have any settings for Europe. You need to set the AE to something that overlaps.
See the WLAN wiki and the chart for 5ghz.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
2.4ghz won't be a problem.. US is a subset of Europe.. but 5ghz are markedly different.
Apple provide no way to change regions.

  • Student License for commercial-use, in Italy

    Hi there!
I would want to buy a student license for Flash Professional CS5, but I have some doubts about it.
Can I use this kind of license for commercial use, like creating websites for works, or selling my games on Steam?
I've read a older topic, and someone said that policy varies depending on the states, so I would like to be sure before buying it.

Hey there Attilio, you should find the answer in the student edition FAQ for your country:

  • What adaptors are needed to use in Italy

Going to Itally and trying to understand what electrical addaptors I will need. Will I need just a plug addaptor or will I need a transformer also?

An inexpensive plug adapter is all that is required. Your Mac's power adapter will accept any utility voltage and frequency available on Earth.
    You can buy this:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B/apple-world-travel-adapter-kit
... or you can buy a set from Wal-Mart for about $30 less.

i moved to italy. can my at&t american iphone be used here?

If you're asking to put an italian SIM card into the phone, the answer is NO.  Your phone is locked to AT&T.  The phone can certainly be used in Italy.  You'll be charged roaming rates.

  • Using my US AT&T iPad2 with a European sim card

I have an AT&T iPad 2 which has already been activated and used here. I would like to purchase a European sim for the iPad for use in Italy, France, and Spain over a 2 week period with good coverage. Has anyone done this and not had to have along their apple computer with iTunes to activate the European sim since the iPad has already been initialized in the US? Can anyone recommend a good carrier for those three countries? Vodafone? Starting our trip in Rome. Thanks.
