Use iPhone 5 without activating wireless service (at first)?

In a bonehead move, I pre-ordered my Verizon iPhone 5 but forgot that my AT&T contract runs until 11/11/12 (I had forgotten that I didn't get my current iPhone 4 at summer release, but several months later).
The early temination fee come out to $325 - 22months*$10/month of servce = $105.  But since it's two phones (my wife and I), we're looking at $210.
I'm planning on not activating my new iPhone until after 11/11 -- I can wait a month and a half to save the $210 (an exercise in discipline and delayed gratification).  However, I'm sure that when the shiny new bauble arrives, I'll want to test drive it (my wife is strong enough to leave it in the box -- I am not).   How do I fire up the new device and not activate the phone service?  In other words, how do I use it like a new iPod Touch for 6 weeks, and when 11/12/12 arrive, how do I get the phone service up and running?

What difference will it make - Verizion still has you under contract and they are still going to bill you for the phone once it is delivered, whether you use it or not.  Your contract starts from the day of delivery, whether you use it, throw it away or whatever - Verizon still gets their monthly due for the next two years.
Did you port your AT&T phone number when you ordered?  If so, then your AT&T account is going to be closed as soon as Verizon ports that number into their system.  You will then owe AT&T for final service and any ETF due.  You cannot reverse a port once initiated.
If you did not port your number, you might as well activate the phone and use it with the new number until your AT&T contract is done - you will be paying the monthly contract fees to Verizon anyway.  Once you are ready to, you can always call Verizon and ask them to port over your AT&T number, at any time.

Is it safe to use iphone 4 without a case

I was using it with case for 2 years. Now I've taken it off and have it without for about a month. I just bought a skin protector so nothing's gonna scratch my iPhone.

  • Will I be able to use my Tmobile simcard for the "contract-free" iPhone 6 without activating a new number?

Since we all know that the term "contract-free" is not clear for everyone - considering so many questions appear to this related topic. Will I be able to use my old Tmobile number without activating a new one? Thanks!

WWhat do you mean by my old tmobile number? is it the number you use right now with your old phone?

  • If I buy a used iPhone 4 without a data plan will the GPS work?

I live in Canada and am a complete newbie when it comes to cell phones and data plans. I am not interested in having or paying for cellular telephone capability.
I've been using the 64 Gb iPod Touch 4 but detest its 0.7 Mb still camera and bemoan its lack of GPS.
Now that the iPhone 4S has been released, there are many folks selling their older iPhone 4s. I'd love to use one of these older iPhone units with their better camera and GPS capability, but don't want to pay for a data plan, nor am I willing to pay $850 for an unlocked iPhone 4S. I'm happy to continue using wireless internet and don't need a cell phone.
Being a newbie when it comes to data plans and cell phones, if I purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone:
    1. Does it need a SIM card (activated or not) to use the GPS on it? If yes, must a deactivated SIM card be provided by the seller or where can I obtain one?
    2. Does the iPhone 4 need to be on a cellular plan to use the GPS?
    3. I can use a deactivated iPhone 4 on WiFi only as I've been doing with the iPod Touch 4, correct?
    4. If I can use a deactivated, non-contract iPhone 4 on WiFi only, will the GPS work and allow me to use GPS-enabled apps? If yes, does it somehow still "tie"into available local cell networks to achieve a position without me paying for (or being registered for) cellular access?
    5. Can future iOS upgrades (say to iOS5) still be performed on a deactivated iPhone 4 without a cell plan?
    6. Do I need to purchase the iPhone 4 from a Canadian seller given my above questions? What other questions do I need to ask of the seller when looking for a used iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance for any help with my newbie questions!

Thanks for that, Paulfromwallasey. I live in a rural area without many cell towers and with WiFi only in my home. I do use offline maps (topographical and street maps) on my iPod Touch 4 outdoors (not needing a signal, WiFi or cellular). I also have a hand-held Garmin GPS receiver but would rather use the GPS in the iPhone (its positional accuracy, while likely being lower than that obtained from my Garmin, is likely sufficient for my needs).
I guess that one of the questions that I was asking is if I were to purchase a used iPhone 4 from someone, and the SIM card have been removed, would the device's GPS still work with GPS-enabled apps (albiet without the cellular-assist)?
Can any pay-as-you-go SIM card be purchased for and used in a deactivated iPhone4? Would this even be necessary for the GPS?
    Thanks again.

  • Can I use the Compass without the locator service running?

It seems to me that when I first got the phone I could use the Compass without have the Lat and Long displayed.
    Is that still possible?

An excellent point. I normally use mechanical compasses and do the compensation the same way; hadn't thought of the need for position data to do it the iPhone way!
Hmm .. now I wonder if putting the compass in magnetic North mode will let it work with location services off? Just tried it an the answer appears to be NO.

  • HT3406 Use iPhone 3G without a service plan. iPhone 4 sim doesn't fit. Original sims in phone won't work

I want to use my old 3GS as an iPod touch.
I just upgraded my old 3GS to iOS 6.?(current). I did a full restore. Now it is stuck in the activation process. I took it to the AT&T store to have them try. They put in a new sim but that didn't work. Apple support says to use the sim from my new phone. The iPhone 4 (my current phone) uses a different type of sim and it's not compatible in size. I have no way to make the phone work. I don't need AT&T service I just need to phone to work as an iPod touch.
    Thanks
    D

The old sim is still in there.  I went to the AT&T store and they tried putting a new sim in there.  That did not work.  I purchased an adaptor and tried fitting the mini sim from my iPhone 4s into the the old 3GS  It fit physically but did not activate the phone.
on a side note... the same adaptor worked to activate an old 3G.  but that runs iOS 4.? which does not block the phone from working before activation.
The AT&T store gave me a new SIM also and that did not work.  I am sitting at an Apple store with a genius bar guy.  he has no idea how to make this work either... his suggestion was to put in an active SIM... oh wait, they are different sizes... ARG!!  seems the issue is with iOS6 and the 3GS and activation.
anyone have an active SIM i can use... I'll give it right back I promise.

  • How do i use iphone 5 without sim card

i have a iPhone 5 and i want to use it without a Sim card because i don't want to call or text how do i do it??????

This may not help however I also tried the same on a iPhone 3GS & 4.   My plan was to allow grandson to use it to play games yet prohibit any in-app purchase or random surfing, much like an older iPod would perform.
I did not have luck (or remained satisfied with what it was) so I turned off all radios and settings (Apple ID, email...) and it works with reasonable success with the SIM card in place.  My new phones have SIM cards that are sized smaller so I could not reuse these cards & my provider supplied new cards each time.

  • Have been using iPhone 5 without sim for 6 months, restore, and now I can't complete restore, this error:

"There is no sim card in the iPhone you are attempting to activate.
Please disconnect and insert a SIM card in the iPhone."
There is a lock symbol above right, but, can’t do anything with that.
I am not trying to activate the phone, just doing a restore . The phone was unlocked by AT&T 6 months ago, after contract was up.
This is strange, I’ve been using this iPhone (5) for 6 months without a SIM, first time I’ve tried to do a restore, and it won’t let me, thinks I want to activate it? I just want to continue to use it as an iPod touch. What do I do? I have the old sim card, but, I don’t want to put it in and attempt to activate it, it is an AT&T sim and I left them behind 6 months ago. I could try the T-Mobile SIM in my iPhone 6, unless it is again smaller than the iPhone 5 sim?
I should be able to restore this phone without the sim and continue to use it as an iPod touch, why is this a hassle??? I'm a long time Apple user, prefer their products, but, sometimes Apple is extremely frustrating! Aarg!
    Anyone know what to do?

ok, I did, and it said again congrats your iPhone is unlocked, but, when it said there was a new carrier update, I cancelled it, but, it asked me again, I cancelled again, I guess I'm scared it will lock it again if I allow the carrier update.
Oh, there it goes again, this time on the phone, arg. I hit update, I hope it doesn't freak out.
I'm glad I didn't destroy the SIM like I almost did. But, it will come out again, longer battery life with the cell portion turned off.

  • Using iPhone 4 Without a SIM

    Hey everyone,
I need a bit of assistance. I am considering getting an iPhone 4 but I have not yet purchased my phone plan. I was wondering if you can use the iPhone with all the wifi functionality (kind of like an iPod Touch) without having a SIM.
I would be considering getting a Rogers iPhone with just a voice plan and no data. If anyone has any suggestions, comments or can let me know if the phone will work without a SIM that would be great.
    Thanks a bunch

"all iPhone comes with a SIM card" ...... except the ones supplied by Apple (in the UK and other markets) that are SIM-free.
We have two provided with no SIMs but with SIM-removal tools, allowing us to choose which carrier we use.
I know this is not the case in 'all' countries but if it's the case in 'any' then it's not entirely correct to say "all iPhone comes with a SIM card", is it? It could lead some people in some places to make a wrong decision, perhaps?
I know it sounds 'picky', but just trying to help others....

  • Buying used iPhone 2g - screenshot & activation questions

    All,
I'm considering buying an iPhone 2g and I had a few questions:
    1) Will the iPhone 2g take screenshots with home-power like new iPhones?
    2) If I reactivate with AT&T, will they require me to have a contract, or would I be able to go month to month? Will they supply a compatible SIM card if the seller doesn't?
    3) Is there a quick way to test how good the battery is (like while the seller is still around, so I can back out if it'll only hold a charge for 15 minutes)?
Any help is appreciated, and any other buying advice is appreciated.
    -->Adam

I read that as well, and will probably shut off the wireless.
But, the ebay vendors I see (the big ones who sell a lot with good ratings), all as policy remove the SIM card. I was probably going to go with NextWorth, as I bought an iPod Classic from them and it was great. I 2g 8GB iPhone is about $115 from these guys.
None of the local Craigslist guys are are responding to me, it seems that these things sell fast and the sellers expect me to text. I don't have a phone that texts reasonably, so I send e-mail or call.
As for the Autism uses, there seem to be a LOT of apps that are useful for Autism. At first, I'm just going to use it with my wireless printer and Teach with Cards Lite (app) to print flash cards on the fly. Then, I'll try to get the kid (who can't talk) to pick the card for what he wants. Later, after I trust him to hold the device, I can do other stuff. But there are (expensive) apps so mute people can 'talk' by pressing icons on the iPhone, if we can teach him how to use them.

  • Why do I get scars on my thumbs using iPhone 5s, without scratches on the screen/ on the phone

I get scars on my thumbs using my iPhone 5s. I had a 3GS, but did not get it then! Please help! The phone is in good shape/condition

If the iPhone5s is new you could take it in to an apple store and see what they can do.
What I would do is carefully run my fingers along all the metal edges, in both directions, feeling for a nick or sharpness. If i found the nick I would gentley rub the nick with a metal object that is rounded.
Another solution is to put on a iPhone case that covers the outside edges.

  • Draining new iPhone 4 without charging it at all first?? HOW??

Just got my new iPhone 4 yesterday and took advice to drain the battery completely before I charge it at all and set it up, but with it only allowing emergency calls, it will take about a week to drain it!
    Any tips?

It makes no difference. The iPhone includes a lithium based battery and allowing a lithium based battery to drain completely on a regular basis can cause more harm than charging the battery more often regardless the battery level.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
You can also recharge a lithium-ion polymer battery whenever convenient, without the full charge or discharge cycle necessary to keep nickel-based batteries at peak performance.

  • Can I use WiFi and other features without activating phone

I want to find out if I can still use WiFi, connect to the computer, etc without activating actual phone service with Verizon.  Basically I plan on getting this phone free with a new contract, but I will continue to use my old phone as the actual active phone.  (There are no new phones that don't require $30 data plan that are actually better than the phone I have now.)

Yes, the Kin TwoM will work on wifi without activating the service.  Before activating mine, I was able to use web browsing and email for about a week on wifi.  I didn't try out the Zune software until later, though I don't think that would be affected either.
However, I did start getting automated txt msgs from verizon warning that I would be in violation of the 2 year discount/aggrement (and be charged full price of the phone) unless I activated the Kin on my number.  I went ahead and activated the Kin at that time.
At present, I could not find anything to that wording in the fine print agreement, and I don't think there would be any problem porting my number back to my old phone, but beware that you may have to activate the Kin once then transfer your number back to your old phone.

  • Can I create User profile service sync connection for my site without Active directory?

    Hi everyone,
Is it possible to use my site without active directory? our AD policy don't allow farm account to have "Replicating directory changes", If I export AD information to SQL and sync profile from SQL is it possible?
    Thanks
    TanaponP

Yes, you can use mysites without setting up user profile sync.  But you won't be able to sync information from SQL without having a primary sync setup with AD first.  Syncing to something like SQL is designed to augment existing profiles.  It
    won't create new ones.
