If you mean the UK Apple Store then Yes. iPhone's sold in the UK by Apple direct are SIM-free and will work with any SIM.
Your warranty will only be valid in the UK though... and Apple won't ship anywhere other than a UK address from the UK Store.

You have only a single option - ask Vodofone to unlock it. If they won't or simply don't do that under any circumstances, then there is nothing to be done about it. You can still use it in Germany, but you'll pay roaming fees. Unless, of course, Vodofone offers some kind of package or deal for long term travelers - worth asking them about it.
An alternative would be to see if you could rent/lease a phone for the 5 months in Germany. I've never done it, but there are companies that rent phones for such periods for travelers.

As long as you buy from an Apple retail Store (Apple owned ) an unlocked iPhone 4S it will work on GSM services worldwide

If you buy a SIM-free iPhone, you will need to purchase a GSM-compatible micro-SIM separately. When you travel internationally, you can use a micro-SIM card for iPhone 4s from a local GSM carrier.
The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.
However the warranty will NOT be valid outside the US .If you need warranty or post warranty service you will have to return the iPhone to the US in person ( cannot mail in to US )

I believe that all iPhones, purchased in Egypt, from official sources, are sold as carrier locked. So, your phone was hacked by someone so you could use it in Germany. Sorry, but that's what happens to hacked iPhones.
No one here can help you, nor can/will Apple, and since none of the carriers in Egypt offer official unlocking, your choices are not good.

Using iPhone in work environments where cameras are forbidden

All my colleagues and I have a common problem: We all would like to use iPhones in our Software company but our customers strictly forbid any cameras on their sites, which we visit quite regularly. They fear that someone could make a photo of a product which is not out in the open yet. As funny as this sounds this is a very common restriction in Germany.
Obviously we could use iPod-Touch as a substitute for the PDA functions of iPhone, but that would mean carrying around an iPod and a cell phone all the time.
Some of our customers are said to have contracts with cell phone manufacturers. The security personell offers you to destroy the lens of camera phones, which will be replaced by the manufacture when you don't work there anymore. I never tried that option myself though. I just bought phones without a camera.
I wouldn't consider this because it would void the warranty of the iPhone.
We asked our customers whether they accept some kind of seals over the lens, unfortunately they don't.
I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. Or is it just german companies which are afraid of photos of their products being taken.
Any ideas on how to solve this?

PS: I don't dare to hope that there will be an "enterprise" version of the iPhone without a camera anytime soon. Would be nice though.

I work in the commercial nuclear field and absolutely NO camera phones are allowed, period. This has knocked out many thousands of potential customers that could help drive the mac experience, in a field that has VERY few mac users. This is a real security issue and any field such as mine has the same rules and regulations. I suspect that soon many business will have the same restrictions.
I can use the new ipod but even then sadley I will have to either carrey it and a cheap phone at additional cost or just do what I am doing now and forgo a cell in the plants alltogether. Those with palms ( most dept. buy them ) have no cameras and no issues. If you try to disguise the fact that you have a camera phone it is a career change thing.

Unfortunately, that will not work. if a U.S. customer travels to Germany (like I did last year and will again next year) then they have to activate international calling, which is easy to do, and pay roaming charges. I believe when I took my Razr with me last year the roaming charge were $1.55 a minute (U.S.).
The question you asked has been asked many times before in the old Pre release iPhone forum. The way that Apple and ATT have tied activation to iTunes and the SIM card tied in with the firmware on the phone prevents other SIM cards from working right now.
It would probably be to your advantage to wait until the European release of the iPhone and see how they handle SIM issues there. European phone activation and use is a lot different then in the U.S, some would argue that it is better, and so what marketing techniques work here, may not apply in Germany or other countries.

1,5 years ago I bought a new iphone 5 over the internet. When I now tried to replace it with a new one in the Apple store they told me that my phone was originally a Verizon phone and apparently someone has unlocked it (for other sim uses). The problem I am now facing is, that they would be willing to replace it, however, apparently in the system it says that my phone is still locked. Hence, even if they give me a new Verizon phone it will apparently still be locked and I might not be able to use it in Germany.
Now I am not quite sure (and they couldn't tell me in the apple store) what it actually means if the phone is locked - does it only refer to sim lock or is there also another type of locking the phone?
In either way, could anybody please help me out on how I go about unlocking the new phone?

The only place in Germany to purchase an officially unlocked iPhone is directly from Apple...no where else. So, have your friend go to an Apple store.
Bear in mind, this phone's warranty/support will only be valid in the EU & the phone will only support LTE in the EU.

I bought this year an iPhone in Japan, through SoftBank
with a contract. A few weeks ago I moved back to Germany
and tried using a prepaid-card, which didn't work, because
there's a SIM-Lock blocking it.
One question is, in Germany, usually when you buy a phone
and pay it off immidiately, it is unlocked. Isn't it everywhere
like that?
And my second question is, is apple able to do something for me?
I called a few days ago in the US, to figure out what I could do,
because I can't use it at all right now.
She told me, I would have to call my old provider, which is SoftBank,
to talk to them. Well, when we bought the phones, I already asked,
how it would work, if I wanna use it in Germany and she said,
that unlocking the phone is illegal at all in Japan.
I know, it's not legal to unlock it, but in Germany when you buy
a phone with a conract, it is unlocked and when you buy pre-paid,
it is locked.
What can I do? It is a half year old, am I gonna throw it
away now?

Different countries and different network providers have different laws and policies regarding SIM unlocking.
If your phone is locked to Softbank, only they can unlock it for you, however, according to the document below, Softbank do not offer authorised unlocking:

Set it up as new by going to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings (which returns it to it's new out of the box condition), put your SIM in it and go through the activation screens. Be sure this is an AT&T phone though as AT&T phones are locked to only work on the AT&T network.

This is the error message I receive when I try to add my phone to my Mac for proximity / FaceTime audio calling. This feature worked until I changed my Apple ID. I have updated my Apple ID everywhere I can think of updating it. I've signed out of Apple ID on my Mac, deleted EVERYTHING (calendars, contacts, etc.), signed back in, etc. I've done the same with my phone, and even done a power-down / reboot and nada. I keep getting this message from the Mac.
I can't figure out where else I should look for my old Apple ID to be logged into anything or creating problems. I've gone over my iPhone and Mac and I'm at a loss. As an aside (and yes, wrong forum), have lost the ability to do SMS forwarding since the Mac no longer receives the code from my iPhone to allow this feature to work. This was lost after signing out of the Apple ID on my Mac this afternoon.
Bluetooth is turned on for both devices. Both devices are on the same WiFi network. Both devices otherwise appear to be working correctly with the exception of the problems I'm having with FaceTime and iCloud being signed into the same Apple ID (which they are).

(By the way, I should have pointed out in my earlier posting that I'm running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 on my Mac). I Just installed latest Yosemite update while my iPhone was switched off, and when my Mac restarted, the 'iPhone Cellular Calls' checkbox in the FaceTime preferences was checked and the problem was therefore solved. Switched on my iPhone, still fine. Relief.
